PAA Minoan Cultural Village...
Preserving our Heritage and Culture
into the Next Millennium
Dear fellow Cretans:
A basic mission of the PAA is to preserve our Cretan heritage and to insure that future generations of Cretans in America
retain their Cretan identity, language, traditions and the Cretan spirit. As we all realize, it has become more and more difficult to achieve this goal as we see our children and grandchildren immerse themselves in the great melting pot of the
world, assimilate, and become “global citizens” of the planet. For more than 80 years our Association remained focused on
its mission for the Cretan community; we have taught our songs, music and dances to our young boys and girls; on numerous occasions, we have brought artistic performances from Crete for U.S. / Canada tours; we have raised world awareness of
the Cretan Diet and its effects on longer, healthier lives; and we have inspired the world with our Cretan spirit for freedom
against anyone who attempts to oppress us, whether they be the Arabs, the Venetians, the Turks, or the Nazis.
True to its mission of preserving our Cretan and Hellenic values in America, the PAA under the diligent and tireless work
of Former PAA President Stavro Semanderes, has undertaken what could be the most important project in its history, the
development of the Minoan Cultural Village at Atsipopoulo. The hotel, residential facility and cultural center will be located
on land gifted to the PAA by the parish of St. Eleftherios, Atsipopoulo, and will be adjacent to the University of Crete in
Rethymno. The purpose of this noble endeavor is to create a bridge between America and Crete for future generations of
Cretan Americans; a place where young men and women and Cretans of all ages can call their own home in Crete; where
they will be “Nikokiredes kai oxi Mousafirides”!
Therefore, to realize this dream, we must all, collectively, show our commitment. With a relatively small investment in
timeshares, you can own a unit for a specific time period during the year. You will have the benefit of owning and using your
unit without the worries of maintaining it, renting it and managing it.
My message this month to all Cretans and friends is an appeal to get involved and show your support for the Minoan
Cultural Village. This is truly an opportunity to support our Association’s 80-year-old mission, while making a solid real estate
investment. I encourage you to read the article by Mr. Semanderes, with all the information detailing the Minoan Cultural
Village Project, and to help the PAA construct a most important bridge that will keep all of us and future generations connected to our motherland, Crete.

Αγαπητοί φίλοι,
Μια βασική αποστολή της Π.Ε.Α. είναι η διατήρηση της Κρητικής κληρονομιάς μας και η διασφάλιση ότι οι μελλοντικές
γενιές των Κρητών της Αμερικής θα διατηρήσουν τη Κρητική τους ταυτότητα, τη γλώσσα, τις παραδόσεις και το πνεύμα
της Κρήτης. Όπως γνωρίζουμε, γίνετε όλο και πιο δύσκολο να επιτευχθεί αυτός ο στόχος, καθώς βλέπουμε τα παιδιά μας
και τα εγγόνια να ενσωματώνονται στο μεγάλο χωνευτήρι του κόσμου, να αφομοιώνονται, και να γίνονται «παγκόσμιοι
πολίτες” του πλανήτη. Για περισσότερα από 80 χρόνια ο Οργανισμός μας παραμένει προσηλωμένος στην αποστολή
του για την Κρητική κοινότητα, διδάσκουμε τα τραγούδια μας, τη μουσική και τους χορούς μας στα παιδιά μας, σε
πολλές περιπτώσεις, φέρνουμε καλλιτεχνικές παραστάσεις από την Κρήτη και κάνουμε περιοδείες σε ΗΠΑ και Καναδά,
ενισχύουμε την επίγνωση του κόσμου όσο αναφορά τη Κρητική διατροφή και τα οφέλη της για υγιέστερη ζωή, και έχουμε
εμπνεύσει τον κόσμο με το Κρητικό πνεύμα μας για την ελευθερία εναντίον οποιουδήποτε επιχείρησε να μας καταπιέσει,
είτε πρόκειται για τους Άραβες, τους Ενετούς, τους Τούρκους, ή τους Ναζί.
Πιστοί στην αποστολή της διαφύλαξης των Κρητικών και των Ελληνικών αρχών μας στην Αμερική, η ΠΕΑ υπό την
επιμέλεια και την ακούραστη εργασία του πρώην Προέδρου της Σταύρου Σημαντήρη, έχει αναλάβει αυτό που θα
μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί ως το πιο σημαντικό έργο στην ιστορία της, την ανάπτυξη του Μινωικού Πολιτιστικού Χωριού
στο Ατσιπόπουλο. Η ξενοδοχειακή μονάδα / πολιτιστικό κέντρο, βρίσκεται σε γή δωρισμένη στη ΠΕΑ από την ενορία του
Αγίου Ελευθερίου, Ατσιπόπουλου, και είναι δίπλα στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης στο Ρέθυμνο. Ο σκοπός αυτού του ευγενούς
έργου είναι η δημιουργία μιας γέφυρας ανάμεσα στην Αμερική και στην Κρήτη για τις μελλοντικές γενιές των Κρητικών
Αμερικανών, ένα μέρος όπου οι νέοι, άνδρες και γυναίκες και Κρητικοί όλων των ηλικιών μπορούν να το αποκαλούν το
σπίτι τους στην Κρήτη, ένα μέρος που θα είναι “Νοικοκύρηδες και όχι Μουσαφίρηδες “!
Για να πραγματοποιηθεί αυτό το όνειρο, πρέπει όλοι, συλλογικά, να δείξουμε το ενδιαφέρον και τη δέσμευσή μας.
Με μια σχετικά μικρή επένδυση σε χρονομερίδια, μπορείτε να κάνετε δική σας μια μονάδα για μια συγκεκριμένη χρονική

Dear Friends,
I hope you all had a very happy,
healthy and joyful Easter with your
families. Since we are approaching
the end of our Administration’s term,
I would like to take this opportunity
to express my sincere thanks to those
who make KPHTH Magazine what it is
today.
First of all, I would like to thank
our members and all our readers for
their subscriptions (with and without
their dues) to our Magazine, for the time they take to read
KPHTH, and for their genuine and valuable feedback.
Thank you to our advertisers and to all our Christmas Issue supporters. Without them, our publication would not
be possible and we would not be able to produce a written
legacy of our organization, our chapters, its members and
their family history. The Christmas issue is the financial cornerstone of KPHTH and makes it possible for us to publish
it throughout the year. Thanks to all of you on the National
Board, especially the District Governors and our President,
for helping secure Christmas ads from members, businesses,
and associates.
I would also like to offer my thanks to our Editor, Nikos
Katsanevakis, for his good work. Many thanks and much appreciation goes to our contributing editors and Chapter News
contributors that helped us to put together a quality magazine with no additional expenses.
Last, but not least, I would like to thank the KPHTH
Magazine Editorial Committee. Without them, a high quality
publication would not have been possible. I truly believe that
we have the most capable KPHTH magazine editorial committee. The committee consists of the following talented individuals: Tina Katsounakis, Rema Manousakis, Helen Ranney,
Cynthia Sandalakis and Helene Semanderes. We are also very
lucky to have the support of our General Secretary, Erasmia
Novotny. I thank them from the bottom of my heart and I
would like you to know that, without them, producing KPHTH
would not be possible.

JOHN DATSERIS
Candidate for the position
of PAA General Supervisor
My name is John Datseris, District VII Governor, and I
am announcing my candidacy for General Supervisor of the
Pancretan Association of America.
I was the founding president of the Psiloritis of Carolinas
chapter in Charlotte, North Carolina, and have been instrumental in growing the chapter from the original 50 founding
members to 110 which it is today.
I served as Lieutenant Governor of the District VII for 3
years and am currently in my 4th year as District VII Governor.
As an officer of the National Board of Directors of the
Pancretan Association of America, I have participated in the
various national programs and fundraisers, while also working with the chapters in my district to keep them healthy and
growing.
During my tenure as Lieutenant Governor, I worked with
the District VII Governor, John Kokolakis, and helped established 3 new PAA Chapters: Samaria in Atlanta, Cretan Association of Houston, and Psiloritis of the Carolinas.
I believe the position of General Supervisor is a serious
position on the Executive Council of the Pancretan Association of American and needs someone who has had broad experience, both on the local level as well as on the national
level. I believe that this level of knowledge and understanding of our organization is critical in working with local chapters and districts to help mediate and resolve any conflicts or
differences.
I possess these qualifications and believe I will be able to
fulfill my duties with confidence. I look forward to this challenge and ask for your support in electing me your new General Supervisor in Florida this summer.

DISTRICT VII ANNUAL CONFERENCE
& GOVERNOR’S BALL
WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA March 4-6, 2011

The annual District VII Conference and Governor’s ball
was hosted by the Cretan Association chapter of West Palm
Beach, FL (Cretan Voice).
Welcome night was Friday, March 4, at St. Catherine’s
Hellenic Cultural Center, where we had the opportunity to
meet old friends and make new ones. We enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the ladies and Cretan music performed by Dimitris Vererakis who played Lyra, Stylianos Papadakis who played Laouto (both from Crete), and Antonios
Marmatakis from New Jersey who played guitar.
The following Saturday morning we attended the district
conference at the Marriott Palm Beach Gardens conference room. Those present were the national PAA president,
Theodore Manousakis, and his wife, Rema; John Manos, 1st
vice president; former president, Emmanuel Elliott, from
Orlando, Florida; and District VII governor, John Datseris.
Chapter delegates were: Miami, Florida, President Katerina
Albanis-Theodorou; Vice-President Dr. George Georgakakis,
Treasurer George Stratoudakis, District VII Lt. Governor and
former chapter president Dimitrios Halivelakis, Paul Koroupakis, former District VII Governor Antonis Tomadakis, and Sophia Karachalios. West Palm Beach, Florida, President Nick
Plevrakis, Vice-President Hope Peroulakis, Secretary Dianne
M. Sophinos, and Treasurer and District VII Youth Director
Alice P. Sofianos. Charlotte, North Carolina, former District
VII Governor Dianne Datseris. Palm Harbor, Florida, President and District VII 2nd Lt. Governor Iakovos Boutzoukas

Governor Datseris welcomed the delegates and members to the meeting. He commented that since we will have
elections for the new board, we need to think about the
responsibility of each position and, if elected, be prepared
to spend a few hours per week volunteering our time for the
benefit of our chapters and the Pancretan organization.
Chairman of the meeting was Manuel Kastrenakes. The
meeting was very informative and productive. The most
important subjects discussed were how to improve the
membership of each chapter, how to support chapters that
are faced with difficulties in their respective communities,
support them if there is a financial need, and also how to
support chapters that are not large enough to have their
own dance group. We all agreed that the future of our organization is the youth. We must find ways to encourage and
support our youth. We also exchanged ideas and suggestions as to how to increase the membership of our chapters
and how the national president and board can help and support the chapters, particularly the smaller ones that are in
communities with a small Greek and Cretan population and
how to better serve our organization with its Mission, Goals,
and Objectives.
The following members were elected to the new District
VII board: governor, Dianne Maragoudakis-Sophinos, 1st
lt. governor, Iakovos Boutzoukas, 2nd lt. governor, Yiannis Doulgerakis; treasurer, Mia Boutzoukas; youth advisor,
Sophia Karahalios; secretary, Eleftheria Winters.
The scholarship committee awarded scholarships to
the following five applicants: Angelique Boutzoukas, Adam
Sophinos, Eftihios Andronis, Yiannis Protopapadakis and
Spiridon Votzakis.
Saturday evening we attended the Governor’s Ball at The
Grand Ballroom, where we enjoyed another delicious meal
and Cretan music provided by the Cretan musicians and DJ
Maria Boutzoukas from Dunedin, FL, as well as a superb
Cretan dance performance by the “Heart of Greece-Kamaria
tis Kritis.” We had the opportunity once more to meet old
friends and make new ones. It was a very pleasant and
rewarding experience.
Certificates of Appreciation were presented to the following Cretan Voice Chapter presidents of the past 30 years,
whose dedication and leadership will always be remembered: Anthony Peroulakis, John Karachalias, Pantelis Peroulakis, George Kanellakis, Costas Kontodaskalakis, Pantelis
(Lee) Esopakis, and Nick Plevrakis.
Cultural Award recipients were John Doulgerakis,
Samaria of Atlanta; Dr. Nick Checkles, Cretans of Houston;
Dianne M. Sophinos,Cretan Voice of West Palm Beach; Maria
Kastrenakes, Cretan American of Miami; Nikos Votzakis,
Kphth of Palm Harbor; Eleftheria Winters, Ariadne of San
Antonio; Irene Zaharakis, Psiloritis of Charlotte.
Recognition and honor awards were presented to the
following District VII Governors: Manuel Kastrenakes 19781982) Kphth Chapter; John Cheretis (1982–1984), Cretan
American Association of Miami; Theodore Karachalios
(1984-1988), Cretan American Association of Miami, Paul
Kouroupakis(1988-1990), Cretan American Association of
Miami; Costas Kontodaskalakis (1990-1994), Cretan Voice
Chapter; Kostas Tsiskakis (1997-2001), To Arkadi of Naples
Chapter; John Kokolakis (1994-1997 and 2001-2005), Kphth
Chapter; Dianne Datseris(2005-2007), Psiloritis Chapter;
John Datseris(2007-2011), Psiloritis Chapter.
On Sunday morning we attended the leadership conference chaired by Helen Vlastos Ranney. We further discussed
the objectives of our organization and how to increase
membership and encourage youth participation. Some of
the ideas were to start a dance group, have meetings on a
regular basis, plan activities that would be enjoyed by all,
such as wine making, boating, fishing, picnics, baking, and
golf tournaments. We also discussed how to reach out to
Greek churches and let them know there is a Cretan chapter
in the area. Invite new Cretans to join the chapter and send/
give them KPHTH magazine, CDs, or DVDs. Intensify communications with current members using email and personal
phone calls. Those of us who are talented can offer “learning” activities like how to make traditional Cretan items and
getting together and have fun the good old Cretan way with
food and music.
For the Youth create opportunities to get them involved
beyond just belonging to a dance group. Involve them in creating videos on You Tube that could be advertised via email,
Twitter, and Facebook. Examples: Dance performances, food
demos, history of Cretan costumes, elements of a traditional
Cretan wedding, history of the PAA, chapter positions and
responsibilities, etc., design youth-oriented activities including
trips, events to honor graduating youth (from middle or high
school), hold a pre-convention get-together to “hype” the
convention, have a Greek night, have “weekend” events in the
region and mentor youth members to prepare them for future
positions of leadership in chapters and or the PAA board.
District VII Governor John Datseris and his board would
like to thank the hosting chapter, the president, Nick Plevrakis, and the chairlady, Alice Peroulakis-Sofianos, and Jenny
Manoura, as well as all the wonderful ladies and gentlemen
that worked so hard and so gracefully to make us feel welcome. The entire weekend was an unforgettable experience.

Emmanuel Elliott, as well as all who participated one way or
another to make this event a success.
Congratulations to the scholarship recipients and best

Cretan culture alive. It has been a rewarding experience for
the present District VII board who served our district very
proudly and the Pancretan organization the past four years.
In June 2011 we will be passing the leadership to the new
board. We like to congratulate them and wish them to continue the success of our district. The former board members
will continue to be available for support and assistance.

Αγαπητοί συμπατριώτες και συμπατριώτισσες, φίλες και φίλοι,
Το Σάββατο 12 Μαρτίου, 2011 πραγματοποιηθεί
«Ο Χορός τού Κυβερνήτη» της 2ας Περιφέρειας στο Rex
Manor, Brooklyn, ΝΥ, εκδήλωση αφιερωμένη σε όλα τα
μέλη, φίλους και υποστηρικτές της περιφέρειας, για την
ανεκτίμητη προσφορά όλων στην διατήρηση και συνέχιση
της Κρητικής μας Παράδοσης και Κληρονομιάς. Ένας μικρός
φόρος τιμής για όλους τούς αγωνιστές των ιερών μας αξιών,
από την πρώτη μέρα όταν το 1768, ο πρώτος Κρητικός
Δημήτριος Φουντουλάκης, βρέθηκε στη Νέα Σμύρνη
της Φλωρίδας, μέχρι και σήμερα, σε όλους εσάς, που
κρατήσατε άσβηστη την αγάπη για την Κρήτη, διατηρήσατε
και διατηρείτε αναλλοίωτα, τα ήθη και έθιμα μας, παρόλη
την απόσταση και τις δυσκολίες της ξενιτιάς και της
καθημερινότητας.
Στο πέρασμα τού χρόνου της μακράς ιστορίας μας
στην καινούργια μας πατρίδα, κάποια από τα μέλη μας,
είχαν την δυνατότητα να προσφέρουν τις υπηρεσίες τους
και πέραν των «συνόρων» της περιφέρειάς τους, με το
να συμμετέχουν στις διάφορες θέσεις της Παγκρητικής

και της Παγκρητικής Νεολαίας. Η εκδήλωση της 12ης
Μαρτίου, κατά κάποιο τρόπο, ήταν αφιερωμένη στην διπλή
προσφορά των ατόμων της 2ας Περιφέρειας, τα οποία
υπηρέτησαν στην οργάνωση μας τα τελευταία 30 χρόνια
(σύνολο 73 άτομα, στα οποία δόθηκαν τιμητικές πλακέτες
εκ μέρους της περιφέρειας).
Αναμφισβήτητα, η κάθε περιφέρεια έχει πολλούς
λόγους να είναι υπερήφανη για τους συλλόγους, τα μέλη
της και τα επιτεύγματα τους. Για την περιφέρειά μας,
είναι αξιοσημείωτο, συγκινητικό και ιδιαίτερα τιμητικό,
το γεγονός, ότι, ο πρώτος πρόεδρος της Παγκρητικής, ο
Βλαδίμηρος Κωνσταντινίδης, ήταν μέλος της Ομόνοιας
ΝΥ. Και κάτι ακόμα, το περιοδικό ΚΡΗΤΗ της Παγκρητικής,
δημοσιεύτηκε για πρώτη φορά το 1929, ενώ ο σύλλογος
Ομόνοια ΝΥ, 3 χρόνια νωρίτερα, το 1926, είχε ήδη εκδώσει
και δημοσίευε φυλλάδιο με το όνομα Κρήτη. Πάντοτε
πρωτοπόρα η περιφέρειά μας, η οποία με την στατιστική
του 2009 είναι το 32 ½ % της Παγκρητικής.
Η εκδήλωση της 12ης Μαρτίου έδειξε ατράνταχτα ότι
η 2η περιφέρεια είναι δυναμική, εκτιμά και υπολογίζει
τον ειλικρινή αγώνα των μελών της και συμπαραστέκεται
σε κάθε ευγενή και καλοπροαίρετη προσπάθεια για
την συνέχιση και διατήρηση της κληρονομιάς και του
πολιτισμού μας, της Κρητικής μας ψυχής, του πάθους,
της ευαισθησίας, του δυναμισμού, της αξιοπρέπειας,
της αλληλοϋποστήριξης, της αλληλοεκτίμησης, της
ανωτερότητας, της μεγαλοπρέπειας. Έδειξε επίσης ότι
οι δεσμοί, που δημιουργούνται ανάμεσα στα μέλη είναι
πολύ έντονοι και ισχυροί, δεν έχουν σύνορα και δεν
περιορίζονται στα «όρια» της κάθε περιφέρειας.
Ευχαριστώ, μέσα από την καρδιά μου, όλους όσους
μας τίμησαν με την παρουσία τους στην εκδήλωση. Θερμά

Λαούτο, καθώς και τον δικό μας Αντώνη Μαρματάκη
στην Κιθάρα, στους οποίους χρωστάμε το υπέροχο
γλέντι που με το απίστευτο ταλέντο τους χάρισαν στους
παρευρισκομένους.
Χιλιάδες ευχαριστώ στην πρόεδρο της Παγκρητικής
Νεολαίας, Ελένη Σωπασή, και την νεολαία της περιφέρειάς
μας για την ιδιαιτέρως τιμητική διάκριση που μου έκαναν,
προσφέροντάς μου ένα άσπρο Κρητικό μαντίλι, την
υπέροχη ανθοδέσμη με τα τριαντάφυλλα, αλλά προπάντων
για τα ιδιαιτέρως τιμητικά και συγκινητικά λόγια τους.
Είμαι υπερήφανη για την Νεολαία μας, ήμουν και θα είμαι
πάντοτε στο πλευρό τους και είμαι ιδιαίτερα ευτυχής
που έχω την εκτίμηση και την αγάπη τους. Με απέραντη
ικανοποίηση διαπιστώνω καθημερινά, ότι οι νέοι μας,
ακλουθούν με σταθερά βήματα, το δρόμο που όλοι εμείς
και οι πριν από εμάς έχουν χαράξει, και προσθέτουν το δικό
τους χρώμα με τα μέσα που τούς προσφέρει η εξέλιξη της
εποχή μας. Παρακολουθώ, το ενδιαφέρον και την αγάπη
τους για την Κρήτη και ειλικρινά χαίρομαι, θαυμάζω και
εκπλήσσομαι από το Κρητικό πάθος που τα διακατέχει και
τα διακρίνει.
Σας ευχαριστώ, όλους, μια ακόμη φορά, για την
ανυπολόγιστης αξίας προσφορά σας στην πολιτιστική
μας κληρονομιά, την συμβολή σας στην υπέρτατη ευθύνη
μας απέναντι στην παράδοσή μας αλλά και απέναντι στην
Νεολαία μας.
Στηρίζομαι στο μεγαλείο της ψυχής των μελών μας,
στην αγάπη όλων απέναντι στο καθήκον και πιστεύω
με όλη την δύναμη της Κρητικής μου οντότητας, ότι,
παρ’ όλες τις δύσκολες συνθήκες των ημερών μας, η
περιφέρειά μας θα παραμείνει δυνατή και θα συνεχίσει
με ανωτερότητα, μεγαλοπρέπεια και μεγαλοψυχία την
προσφορά της στην οργάνωσή μας και στην ευθύνη μας
απέναντι στις πολιτιστικές και ηθικές μας υποχρεώσεις.
Θα είναι πράγματι ευχής έργο, να βρούμε την απαραίτητη
δύναμη να αντιμετωπίσουμε με συγκατάβαση, κατανόηση,
συνεργασία και αισιοδοξία το μέλλον, να παρακάμψομε
όσο είναι δυνατόν τα πολλές φορές αξεπέραστα
προβλήματα τού παρόντος, τις διαφορετικές ιδεολογικές

απόψεις και με το χέρι στη καρδιά, την δύναμη που κρύβει
το απ’ άκρη σ’ άκρη Κρητικό φιλότιμο, να συνεχίσουμε
ενωμένοι τον αγώνα μας. Γνωρίζοντας την αγάπη των
μελών μας για την μεγάλη ιδέα που λέγεται ΚΡΗΤΗ, είμαι
απόλυτα πεπεισμένη, ότι βαδίζοντας όλοι μαζί, χέρι-χέρι,
με εκτίμηση, σεβασμό και συνεργασία θα κατορθώσομε
τα ακατόρθωτα. Η ιστορία και η πείρα όλων μας, μας έχει
διδάξει ότι οι πράξεις και οι αποφάσεις τού σήμερα όσο κι
αν φαίνονται αμετάκλητες, αναγκαίες ή αναπόφευκτες,
έχουν τεράστιο αντίκτυπο στην συμπεριφορά των
άλλων γύρων μας και προπάντων μεγάλη επίδραση στην
συμπεριφορά των νέων μας για τούς οποίους είμαστε και
πρέπει να παραμείνομε φωτεινό παράδειγμα, παράδειγμα
προς μίμηση και σε καμία περίπτωση παράδειγμα προς
αποφυγήν. Είμαι ακόμα περισσότερο σίγουρη ότι όταν τα
τυχόν συννεφάκια περάσουν και παρουσιαστεί και πάλι
το ουράνιο τόξο, τότε όλοι θα είμαστε ικανοποιημένοι και
υπερήφανοι από το αποτέλεσμα και σας διαβεβαιώνω ότι
δεν θα μετανιώσουμε ποτέ για την απόφασή μας.
Ευχαριστώ όλους όσους συνέβαλαν στην επιτυχία της
εκδήλωσης, όσους μάς τίμησαν με την παρουσία τους, την
οικονομική τους ενίσχυση, την θετική τους ενέργεια, τις
ειλικρινείς τους ευχές.
Εύχομαι σε όλους τούς συλλόγους και στην Παγκρητική
συνεχή ανοδική πορεία και σε όλα τα μέλη και φίλους μας,
υγεία, αγάπη, ομόνοια, πρόοδο, προσωπική ευτυχία και
ειρήνη ανά τον κόσμο.
Συνάντηση Ηγεσίας
Την Κυριακή 13 Μαρτίου πραγματοποιήθηκε η ειδική
συνεδρίαση των στελεχών/μελών των συλλόγων της
Περιφέρειας με αξιωματούχους του συμβουλίου της
Παγκρητικής. Η συνεδρίαση έλαβε μέρος στο Κρητικό σπίτι
της Κρητικής Αδελφότητας ΝΥ. Η παρουσία και η ενεργή
συμμετοχή των μελών της περιφέρειας ήταν ειλικρινά
αξιοσημείωτη.
Από το συμβούλιο της Παγκρητικής παρευρέθηκαν,
ο 1ος Αντιπρόεδρος κ. Γιάννης Μάνος, από το Σικάγο
ο όποιος ήταν και ο συντονιστής της συνεδρίασης, ο
2ος Αντιπρόεδρος, κ. Νίκος Καστρινάκης, η κ. Μαρία
Στρατουδάκη, εκτελεστική διευθύντρια των Γυναικείων
τμημάτων της Παγκρητικής, η δ. Ελένη Σωπασής,
πρόεδρος της Παγκρητικής Νεολαίας, ο κ. Νίκος
Βερυκάκης, κυβερνήτης της 4ης περιφέρειας, από το ΟΗ,
ο κ. Ψαράκης επικεφαλής της Πολιτιστικής επιτροπής
και πρόεδρος του συλλόγου Λευκά Όρη, ο κ. Σταυρός

Νεολαίας μας. Επίσης, ο πρόεδρος του συλλόγου ΚΡΗΤΗ
από το Clearwater, της Φλώριδας, αντικυβερνήτης της 7ης
περιφέρειας, υπεύθυνος του συνεδρίου της Παγκρητικής,
Ιάκωβος Μπούτζουκας με την σύζυγό του, Μια
Μπούτζουκα, και οι οποίοι μας έκαναν μια ενημερωτική
παρουσίαση του προγράμματος του συνεδρίου και τους
ευχαριστούμε πολύ για αυτό.
Η κυβερνήτης, κ. Μαρματάκη, καλωσόρισε και
ευχαρίστησε τα άτομα του συμβουλίου της ΠΕΑ τους
προέδρους και τα μέλη των συλλόγων καθώς και ο
κ. Μανουσάκης ο οποίος και εξήγησε την ροή της
συνεδρίασης. Στη συνέχεια ο κ. Μάνος, αναφέρθηκε στην
σπουδαιότητα και τον σκοπό των συναντήσεων αυτών,

που φυσικά δεν είναι άλλος από το να ενημερωθούν
οι αξιωματούχοι της Παγκρητικής για τα θέματα που
απασχολούν τα μέλη της περιφέρειας, και να ανταλλαγούν
απόψεις και ιδέες για την αντιμετώπισή τους.
Η συνεδρίαση διεξήχθη άψογα κάτω από συντονισμό και
την εποπτεία του εξαιρετικά προικισμένου και χαρισματικού
1ου Αντιπροέδρου κ. Γιάννη Μάνου. Όπως σε όλες τις
μέχρι στιγμής συνεδριάσεις του είδους αυτού, τα θέματα
που απασχολούν τους αξιωματούχους των συλλόγων,
είναι η υποστήριξη και επικοινωνία με την Νεολαία, η
προσέγγιση νέων μελών στους συλλόγους αλλά και η
διατήρηση των ήδη υπαρχόντων. Είναι αναμφισβήτητο ότι
για να επιτευχθούν τα παραπάνω απαιτείται συνεργασία,
αλληλοϋποστήριξη, αλληλοκατανόηση, αλληλοεκτίμηση και
σεβασμός όλων προς όλους.

The PAA Minoan Cultural Village at
Atsipopoulo Crete has progressed to the stage
where it requires your financial participation
in order to proceed. The mission of this facility
is to create our home in Crete where future
generations of Cretan Americans can visit often,
and in comfort, to keep in touch with beautiful
Crete and our Hellenic Cretan Cultural Heritage.
The grant application for financial assistance
from the Greek Government is still pending, but
we must move forward with our own resources.
The actual venture will be developed and
managed by a “for profit” subsidiary of the PAA
named, “PAA- Minoan Cultural Village, Inc.”,
hereinafter referred to as PAA-MCV. The PAA
will hold majority and controlling interest of the
PAA-MCV. Because this entity will not be formed
until the venture becomes certain, the PAA
Board has delegated to the “PAA-Minoan Village,
Inc”, hereinafter referred to as PAA-MVI, the
responsibility of conducting the “First Offering” to
our members to determine the degree of support.
The PAA-MVI is a 501 (c) 3 entity with the mission
to foster the development of this center for the
promulgation of our Hellenic Cretan Culture.
What are we offering?
We offer the reservation for the purchase of a
time share in the hotel of this development. More
specifically, each unit of time share is a single
bedroom suite for one week for 20 consecutive
years; the price for this type of unit is $8,000.00
with an annual maintenance fee of 300* Euros. A
two bedroom suite will sell for $20,000.00 with
an annual maintenance fee of 500* Euros. The
hotel has 32 single bedroom and 6 two bedroom
suites. The accommodations are rated as Five
Stars, which includes king size beds. This offering
is for the sale of 500 units of which 250 units will
have option to be leased for up to 60 years for a
reduced additional cost.
*Adjustable periodically for inflation after the start of operations.
How will these reservations work?
In order to reserve, you must execute an
agreement with the PAA-MVI with a deposit of
20%, or $1,600.00 for a one bedroom suite or
$4,000.00 for a two bedroom suite. The deposit
will be held in an interest bearing escrow account
at an FDIC insured Financial Institution. The critical
mass for this project is the selling of 500 units.
If the critical mass is not achieved by the end of
March 2012, you will be refunded your deposit
plus all earned interest.
How do I reserve?
You can reserve by mailing back the tear
out portion of this form. We will mail you the
agreement which you will execute and mail
back with your deposit of 20% made payable to
the PAA-MVI. An alternate method is to print
the agreement from our website PAAMCV.com,

Who can buy into this offer?
We hope that our members and Chapters
will buy the 500 units of this offering but any
Philhellene will be welcomed. After the 500
units of this offering are sold, the project will be
ready to start. At that time, the PAA-MCV will be
formed and will take over the development. The
PAA-MCV will determine the pricing of further
offerings which, at that time, will most likely be
considerably higher.
What happens if we do not go to Crete for some
years?
If you give written notice of one month
or more, you will not be responsible for the
maintenance fee and the PAA-MCV will lease the
suite. Proceeds from the rental will first pay for
the maintenance fee. Then the remaining money
will be split, with the owner receiving 75% of the
balance. Another method would be to make a
donation of the time to the PAA-MVI. Since the
PAA-MVI is a 501(c) 3 entity, you will receive a
tax credit for the donation at market price and
the PAA-MVI will use the time to host summer
programs for our youth.
Why should you participate?
It is a good investment for preserving the
connection of your family to Crete. You will have a

educational and cultural programs. And last,
but not least, it is a good investment financially
because our pricing is well below market values
and you will be able to resell your time share for
a profit. The only restriction to such a sale is that
the PAA must be given the first “right of refusal”.
Moreover, you will lock-in today’s pricing for the
future. We all know that inflation alone will cause
market price increases; by buying now you will
shelter your travel costs for the next 20 years at
below current pricing.
What transportation will be available?
The facility will have a Van service for
transporting guests to the city and beaches of
Rethymnon. Agreements with local car rental
companies will be in place to provide rentals to
guests at favorable pricing. Agreement with local
taxi operators will be in place to expedite service
to guests at fair pricing. Our receptionist will
provide all the assistance needed to make each
arrangement.

What are my responsibilities if this project
proceeds?
When this project begins, you will execute a
buy/sell agreement with the managing entity the
PAA- MCV. Legal fees, estimated at 400 Euros or
less, will be paid by the buyer. At that time you
will have to pay the next 30% of the price. The
original deposit and the new funds will become
available for the construction of the hotel. When
the construction is substantially complete the next
25% payment will be made. When the facility is
ready for operation the balance 25% will be due.

Οι Γυναίκες στη Μάχη της Κρήτης
Εβδομήντα χρόνια
συμπληρώνονται φέτος από τη μάχη
της Κρήτης. Την μάχη που αν και
χάθηκε πολλοί την χαρακτήρισαν και
συνταύτισαν με νίκη μια και άλλαξε
την ιστορία. Χρωστάμε πολλά σε
όλους όσους πολέμησαν για την
ελευθερία της Κρήτης όμως πολύ
λίγα μπορεί να βρει κανείς γραμμένα
για την συμβολή των γυναικών της
Κρήτης στον πόλεμο, την Μάχη της
Κρήτης και στην αντίσταση. Ένα
δείγμα από την συμβολή της Γυναίκας
στην Μάχη της Κρήτης φρόντισε να
διασώσει ένας Γερμανός Αξιωματικός
των Αλεξιπτωτιστών περιγράφοντας
ένα περιστατικό στην περιοχή Γαλατά
Χανίων, όπου πραγματοποιήθηκε το
μεγαλύτερο μέρος των επιχειρήσεων
της Γερμανικής εισβολής στην Κρήτη.
“Στο λιγοστό φως της ημέρας
θυμάμαι που πετάχθηκε σαν αγρίμι
μέσα από τους αγκαθωτούς θάμνους,
σαν αστραπή, μια λεβεντόκορμη
σιλουέτα, στα μαύρα ντυμένη, με
ψηλές μπότες και σαρίκι στο κεφάλι,
που δίχως καθυστέρηση φύτεψε με το
γερμανικό αυτόματο που κρατούσε,
πέντε σφαίρες στο στομάχι δύο
αλεξιπτωτιστών. Πριν προλάβουμε
να αντιδράσουμε, έπεσε κάτω,
γλιστρώντας σαν φίδι μέσα στους
θάμνους με δαιμονισμένη ταχύτητα.
Αντιδρώντας γρήγορα, τον
κυκλώσαμε και προσπαθήσαμε να
τον εξουδετερώσουμε. Όταν έφθασα
κοντά του δεν είχε ακόμα πεθάνει. Τα
μάτια του ήταν ανοικτά, κατάμαυρα,
λες και φοβέριζε τον ερχομό του
θανάτου, όμως όλο σχεδόν το
κορμί του ήταν χτυπημένο από τα
θραύσματα της χειροβομβίδας. Τον
σήκωσα και ακούμπησα την πλάτη
του στον κορμό μιας χοντρής ελιάς,
ειλικρινά με είχε συναρπάσει η
τακτική που μαχόταν.
Θα ήταν περίπου 18 χρονών.
Πριν ξεψυχήσει, κοίταξε βαθιά μέσα
στα μάτια το στοχασμό μου και
χαμογέλασε. Ξαφνιάστηκα. Δεν ξέρω
αν χαμογελούσε σε μένα, ή στο θάνατο
που φτερούγιζε για να τον πάρει.
Σήκωσε με κόπο το δεξί του χέρι,
πήρε από το λαιμό του ένα σταυρό
που κρεμόταν, τον φίλησε κι έγειρε
το κεφάλι πλάγια, ξεψυχώντας
με καρφωμένο στα χείλη του το
χαμόγελο.
Όμως η έκπληξή μου έμελλε
να κορυφωθεί όταν τραβώντας
το σαρίκι του για να τον ξαπλώσω
χάμω ξεχύθηκαν απ’ το κεφάλι του
μισό μέτρο κατάμαυρα μαλλιά. Τότε
μόνο κατάλαβα πως ήταν γυναίκα.
Βουβάθηκα. Ήταν κάτι που δεν το
περίμενα. Ένοιωσα στο λαιμό μου
έναν κόμπο να με πνίγει. Ήταν η
πρώτη φορά που συνειδητοποίησα
ότι η μοίρα των αλεξιπτωτιστών
θά ‘ταν πολύ δύσκολη στην Κρήτη.
Έφυγα, αφήνοντας τη σκέψη μου
κάτω από τη γέρικη ελιά, κοντά στη
νεκρή κοπέλα”.
Εμείς οφείλουμε τουλάχιστον
να θυμόμαστε και να φροντίσουμε
η νεότερες γενιές να μάθουν την
ιστορία που όσο απίστευτη και αν
ακούγεται είναι αληθινή.

Mrs. MALONEY. Mr. Speaker, today I am reintroducing legislation
to honor and recognize the heroes of the Battle of Crete and
commend the PanCretan Association of America for preserving
and promoting the history of Crete and its people.
During the Battle of Crete in May 1941, Allied forces and the
people of Crete joined together to fight against an advancing Nazi
army. Although unsuccessful in defeating the
Nazi invaders, this coalition of forces inflicted enormous
casualties to the airborne Nazi assault, resulting in more than
3,700 German troops killed and the destruction of multiple
transport aircraft. In addition to these losses, the Allied forces
were able to hold off the Nazi victory long enough to ensure that
the German army would face a harsh and destructive winter
as it proceeded to Russia.
This resolution observes the memory of the brave men and
women who perished and honors the living
that fought in the Battle of Crete.

An announcement appeared outlining the discussion for the 5th National
Convention to be held in Boston, Massachusetts June 21 to June 27, 1936.
It signed by President John Volikos,
General Secretary N. Vayionis and
Special Secretary M. Mamalakis. The
announcement requests all chapters
to discuss and vote on the following
items for delegates to respond to at
the convention:
1. Collect donations for the earthquake victims of Crete.
2. Insurance for members of the
Cretan Union.
3. Methods for recognizing women’s and youth chapters.
4. (a) Ways to self-support the
KPHTH publication, (b) methods to
make subscriptions mandatory for
chapters and members, (c) content and
circulation, and (d) representation of
chapters for the publication.
5. (a) General items: Development
and progress of Pancretan Union, (b)
support of philanthropic and social
organizations in Crete, (c) a second
excursion to Crete, (d) Amendments
to the Constitution, and (e) items for
discussion proposed by chapters.
New York, New York - A dinner
sponsored by the New York chapter
was held May 1 at the Aristocratic
Excellent-Goody Shop in honor of the
newly elected bishop of Sitia, Filotheos
Mazokopakis. His Excellency Mazo-
the Maliotis Center archives
kopakis served as priest to the Greek
Orthodox community of South Bend,
Indiana for a decade. He established
the St. Andrew Church in South Bend.
The Ahepa Chapter No. 100 declared
him a life-long member and honorary
president. Chairman of the event was
the president of the Omonoia Chapter
and Secretary of the Pancretan Union,
Nicholas Vayionis. Among the speakers was Editor-in-chief of the Atlandis, Vladimir Konstantinidis, National
Herald Editor-in-chief D. Kallimahos,
and Father George Spiridakis. The next
morning the newly-elected Bishop
Mazokopakis departed for Crete to
commence his new duties.
George Kapetanakis, a member of
the Omonoia Chapter and Miss Ioanna
Gallanou exchanged engagement rings
at the estate of the bride’s father.
Koumbara was Mrs. Anna Hamilakis
of Springfield, Massachusetts. Two
hundred guests were present at the
engagement party.

elected as delegate for the 5th National
Convention Mr. George Lambousakis.

CHAPTERS HOST BENEFIT
‘THE RETURN OF THE THREE
“Return of The Three Muses,” an afternoon of entertainment presented by the modern Greek studies department of
SF State University, returned to campus for its sixth year on
Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. in McKenna Hall.
The program celebrated the 28th year of the Nikos Kazantzakis Chair. The Kazantzakis Chair, created in 1983, provides
funding for courses, events, lectures and film screenings
within the University’s Modern Greek Studies Department.
The chair is named for Greek (Cretan) writer and philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis, perhaps best known as the author
of “Zorba the Greek” and “The Last Temptation.” Kazantzakis
died in 1957.
“Return of the Three Muses” was an afternoon of poetry,
song and dance attended by over 300 people. The Master of
Ceremonies for the event was Diane Kounalakis Baxter.
Two Greek poems: “Sto Periyali,”and “Anigo to stoma”
were presented. These poems are by Nobel Prize-winning

Greek authors, Elytis, and Seferis. Following each recitation,
the Festival Folk Chorus and Orchestra, presented the associated music. (Elytis was born in Heraklion, Crete).
The musical aggregation included the 70 members
of the SF Bay Area based Festival chorus and orchestra;
included in this group were members from five different
Church Parish choirs and an orchestra of 24 pieces. “The
group was brought together by their love of Greek music”
said group founder and director George Liviakis. This group
was organized some 25 years ago by Liviakis; an engineer by
trade, who has always had music in his life since he took up
the violin at age six and currently plays the mandolin in the
Aurora Mandolin Orchestra.
Also featured were opera singer Susan Gundunas; who
was joined by her father, Louie Gundunas, and uncle, Kosta
Gundunas. Kosta also conducted the Men’s chorus alongside
Dr. Tikey Zes, a retired music professor from San Jose State

University, who conducted the full
chorus and orchestra. Dr. Zes is nationally known for his many choral arrangements, both religious, as well as folk.
The group concluded with two Cretan compositions in honor of Kazantzakis. The program was topped off with
lively dancing by the Enomeni Dancers.
This SF Bay Area dance troupe specializes in Cretan dances.
After the entertainment portion of
the program, the celebration continued
with a reception hosted by the three
Pancretan Association chapters of
Northern California; Epimenides, Ikaros
and Polirinia, and chaired by Chris
Daskalakis.

George and Mary Pologeorgis
A life of dedication…
Hand-in-hand George and Mary
Pologeorgis served the PAA for nearly
three-quarters of a century with
George serving as national president
from 1986 to 1988 and Mary serving
as women’s executive director from
2003 to 2005. Their service to the
organization began as young adults
when George and Mary both joined
the “Labrys” youth chapter of New
York. It was through this affiliation that
George and Mary began dedicating
much of their lives for the betterment
of the PAA and preserving their Cretan
heritage. They both attended the PAA
national convention in Cleveland in
1958. Mary’s godfather lived in Cleveland and she wanted to visit with him.
Since the New York youth were such a

close-knit group, she asked George to
take her to see him. They spent a long
and interesting visit with her godfather
and from there their love flourished
culminating in their marriage in 1959.
They have remained devoted to the
PAA and to each other ever since.
George was born in 1927 in WilkesBarre, Pennsylvania, the second eldest
of six children born to Nicholas and
Maria Pologeorgis. His father, a First
World War U.S. veteran, was from
Nippos, Apokoronou, Chania, and his
mother, Maria Koukoulari, a graduate
of Arsakeon and a schoolteacher, was
born in Athens. When George was
three years old, the Pologeorgis family
moved back to Crete, where George
was raised. In 1943-45 George fought
with the commandos throughout the
mountains of Crete - from Chania to
Heraklion. He was captured by the
Germans and taken to Heraklion and
imprisoned in the Palace of Knossos
from which he escaped after two days.
The Pologeorgis family returned
to the United States in 1946. They
settled in New York where George was
taught all aspects of the fur business.
After learning all he could, he bought
machinery, moved it to his home, and
taught his three brothers the trade. To
this day his brother Stanley’s children
are still involved in the fur business
in New York. After serving in the U.S.
Army, he returned to New York and
became an active member of first
“Labrys” youth chapter and later the
“Omonoia” chapter.
Mary was born in 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio, to Joseph and Chrissi
Tzortzinakis. Her father was from
Rethymnon; her mother from Chania.
They migrated to the United States to
Cleveland in 1927. Because of the depression the family moved to New York
to seek a better future when Mary was
six years old. During her early years
the family lived in the Bronx, Brooklyn
and Bayside. Her mother became proprietor of a very successful fur finishing shop and through this connection
she first met George. Mary’s father
felt girls should learn to play the violin
and this led to her joining Omonoia’s
“Mandolinata” group at an early age.
She joined the Cretan youth chapter
“Labrys” of NY and later the women’s
chapter “Pasiphae.”
As a member of the “Omonia”
Chapter in New York, George served as
a member of the board, as treasurer,
and as president in1964,1965 and
then again in 1974. He was a member of the board when the buildings
on 8th Avenue were purchased. His
accomplishments at the national level
were outstanding. From 1966 through
1970 George was District II governor.
During his tenure he was instrumental, together with President Charles
Maliotis, in bringing the “Omalos”
Chapter of Norfolk, Virginia and the
“White Mountains” Chapter of New
Brunswick, New Jersey into the PAA
family. He served as general supervisor
for two years in 1980 and 1981. During
his three two-year terms as first vice
president in 1970, 1982 and 1984 he
provided leadership in several projects.
At the 29th National Convention in
Denver, Colorado, George was elected
president of the PAA in 1986. One of
his most significant contributions was
the organization, together with Costas
Lambrakis, of the PAA excursion to
Crete in July and August of 1987. On
July 30th, 39 stalwart Cretans, from all
walks of life, participated in a pilgrimage to the Ecumenical Patriarchate in
Constantinople to pay homage to his
Holiness Patriarch Demetrios.
This was the first ever such excursion in the history of the PAA. Among
the group were the late Bishop Anthony, Archbishop Anthimos, and Archimandrite Joachim Hatzidakis. A check
in the amount of $10,000 was presented by PAA to his Holiness to assist him
in his ecumenical tasks. Following this
two-day sojourn to Phanari, the group
toured Crete from the westernmost
tip to the easternmost tip (Forest of
Palms).
George served as Chairman (with
Mary a key member of his team) of
the “Special Commemorative Album”
Committee, which was dedicated to all
American Cretan War Veterans and was
presented to the Veterans at the PAA
National Convention in Washington,
D.C., in July 1997.
He also served as president of the
“Orange Blossom” chapter in Florida,
where George and Mary currently reside.
In addition to his honorable fiftyseven years of service to the PAA, he
received the Good Conduct Medal and
the National Defense Service Medal for
service in the U.S. Army. He also re-
ceived a Certificate of Merit on the 50th
Anniversary of the Battle of Crete for
noble participation in the National Resistance of Crete during the Second World
War presented to him by Congressman
Bilirakis in New York in 1991.
Through all of George’s official
duties with the PAA, Mary was at his
side and making her own significant
contributions to the PAA. She served
the Cretan women’s chapter “Pasiphae” of New York as secretary, five
times as vice president from 1965 to
1969 and seven years as president from
1970 to 1974 and again from 1985 to
1986. During her tenure as president,
Mary was instrumental in “adopting”
(sending monthly financial assistance)
two orphans in Crete: Vasilaki in Chania and Pantelitsa in Rethymnon. In
Florida she served as secretary to the
“Orange Blossom” Chapter.
Mary was elected PAA Women’s
Executive Director at the 2003 convention in Chicago. During her term she
worked diligently with PAA women’s
chapters to raise funds for a day care
center in Hrisopigi, Chania and an orphanage in Kaliviani, Herakleon.
She retired from Westinghouse
Electric International Company after 42
years of dedicated service. Her career
with the company began at an early
age and she reached the position of
executive secretary.
Mary and George will forever be
remembered for their contributions to
the PAA. They are both still members
of their New York chapters and are
looking forward to meeting old friends
at this year’s convention in Florida.

Host chapter of the 42nd PAA National Convention

The “KPHTH” Chapter of Clearwater, (formerly The Orange Blossom
Chapter) has had a long and varied history from its inception to the present
time. It has been a vibrant member
of the PAA as it is evident by the three
national conventions that it has been
granted to host (1981, 1984, and 2011).
Its membership has been active, loyal,
and dutiful; yet, aggressive in tackling
and accomplishing Herculean tasks.
Although Tom Saridakis in 1975,
had advertised on the Greek radio
station for Cretans living in the Clearwater area in order to form a chapter,
the founders were newcomers Manolis
Kastrenakes and Bill Lampathakis and
longtime resident Speros Frangedis.
They met one Sunday in the fall of 1977
outside the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Clearwater, and they
decided to form a Pancretan Association Chapter.

The first meeting was held at Bill
and Effie Lampathakis’ home. The following adults were present: Anthoula
and Kostas Archontakis, Joan and
Speros Frangedis, Evagelia and Manolis
Kastrenakes, Effie and Bill Lampathakis,
Viki and Jim Limberakis, and Roula and
Stamatis Troulos.
The following children were present: Andreas Archontakis, Mia and Mike
Frangedis, Sevi, Mike and Tricia Kastrenakes, Tere, Jim and Stella Lampathakis,
Effie Limberakis, and Angie Pallas.
The first official meeting took place
in May of l978 at the Adam’s Mark Hotel
on Clearwater Beach. After a spirited
discussion and careful consideration,
the unique name “The Orange Blossom
Chapter of the Pancretan Association of
America” was accepted by the majority
of the members. The following members were elected officers: Manolis Kastrenakes, President; Bill Kambouris, Vice
President; Bill Lampathakis, Treasurer;
Lemonia Poumakis, Secretary; Sophie
Kourmoulis, Corresponding Secretary;
Manolis Boutzoukas, Manolis Eliakis,
Dimitris Ferarolis, and George Manolas,
Members of the Board.
The first picnic took place in the
summer of 1978. Good time was had
by all, especially the children! The first
dance was held at the Sheraton Sand
Key Hotel on Clearwater Beach in February of 1979, with over 800 people in
attendance. George Poumakis and his
committee worked extremely hard to
make this event a huge success.
In 1981, the Orange Blossom Chapter
hosted the PAA Youth Convention at the
Sheraton Sand Key Hotel on Clearwater
Beach. The chairman of the convention
was James Boutzoukas and the co-chairperson was Mia Frangedis. The Board
consisted of Sandra Barris, Angie Bennis,
Michael Boutzoukas, Sevi and Mike Kas-

trenakes, Barbara Katopis, Tere and Jim Lampathakis, Tina
and Ted Legakis, Pete Maragoudakis, and Maria Vavourakis.
The dance group, under the supervision of dance
teacher Joan Frangedis, performed extremely well. The
beautiful Cretan costumes were hand sewn by the ladies
of the chapter. The members of the dance group were:
Sandra Barris, James and Michael Boutzoukas, Mia
Frangedis, Sevi and Mike Kastrenakes, and Tere and Jim
Lampathakis.
In 1984, the Orange Blossom Chapter hosted one of
the most successful conventions of the PAA at the Sheraton Sand Key Hotel on Clearwater beach. There were
more than l,000 members in attendance. The precise
management of all the events and the huge success of
the convention album, under the chairmanship of Nick
Anton and Bill Lampathakis, contributed to a financially
successful convention.
The chairman of the convention was Speros Frangedis, and the chairladies were Effie Lampathakis and Garnet Saridakis. The president of the chapter was Manolis
Boutzoukas. The Members of the Board were Nick
Anton, Angelo Barris, Stelios Bennis, Bill Kambouris, Ann
Katopis, Nick Lourake, Manos Vlamakis, Tom Saridakis,
and Manuel Skordelis.
The members of the 1984 Convention dance group,
under the supervision of dance teacher Joan Frangedis,
were: Sandra Barris, James and Michael Boutzoukas,
Mia Frangedis, Mike Kastrenakes, and Stella and Jim
Lampathakis.
In 1987, the Building Acquisition Committee, under
the chairmanship of Speros Frangedis, the diligent
efforts of Realtors Bill and Effie Lampathakis, and the
overwhelming support of the membership bought the
exceptional property at 1821 Curlew Road in the Clearwater area.
In 1992, the Building Committee, under the chairmanship of Manolis Boutzoukas and the co-chairmanship of
John Kokolakis, the tireless efforts of George Galanakis,
Nikos Mastrokalos, George Mountrakis, and Antonis
Penzakis, and the hard work of the rest of the membership, built the outstanding structure that has been used
to provide countless hours of delight and enjoyment.
Andreas Terezakis had a vision to build a chapel on
our property, and to name it Agios Haralambos. John
Filipakis designed it and painted the iconography, and
Kostas Bakalexis and Nikos Mastrokalos built it, with the
help of several pious members.
In 2011, the KPHTH chapter has the privilege and the
honor to host the 42nd PAA Convention. Our chapter,
since its inception, has been an energetic supporter of
the PAA. It is our sincere hope that we will be worthy
of our rich history, and everyone will have a wonderful
time.
In over 34 years, as we forged friendships, made
koumbaries, and watched our children grow up, get
married, have children of their own, and saw our grandchildren get married, we have come to realize that what
binds us together is our Hellenic ethnicity and, specifically, our Cretan heritage.

Είναι μία συνήθεια

τελείωσαν σαν ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟΙ.
Πόσους έχουμε τέτοιους γύρω μας εμείς οι ζωντανοί;
Εγώ είχα την καλή τύχη να γνωρίσω την κουνιάδα μου
Αικατερίνη Μυλονοπούλου. Η Αικατερίνη ήταν σύζυγος του
Δημητρίου Μυλονόπουλου ο οποίος ζει τώρα στον Πόρο
όπου έμεναν με την Αικατερίνη τα τελευταία 17 χρόνια και η
μεγαλύτερη κόρη του Πέτρου και της Ευανθίας Καπασσάκη
που ήταν και οι δύο μέλη της Ομόνοια και της Πασιφάης.
Συγχρόνως είχα και την καλή τύχη να της αναγνωρίσω
λίγους μήνες πριν φύγει από τη ζωή μερικά μόνο από εκείνα
που πρόσφερε σε όλους που τη γνώρισαν.
Δεν είναι καθόλου ανάγκη να γράψω υπερβολές διότι η
Αικατερίνη που άκουγε στο όνομα Τίνα, τα είχε όλα πάνω
της, τόσο στην εμφάνιση, όσο και στην υπέροχη ψυχή της.
Είχε όλα τα αληθινά και τα σημαντικά δώρα του Θεού.
Παρόλο που ο Θεός δεν της έδωσε το δώρο να έχει δικά
της παιδιά με το μεγαλείο της ψυχής της και τη Κρητική
λεβεντιά της παραμέρισε το παράπονο της μοίρας της και
αγκάλιασε σαν δικά της παιδιά όλα τα παιδιά των αδερφιών
της ανίψια και ανιψιές είχαν μια δεύτερη μάνα και ας μην το
καταλαβαίνανε και ας μην το αναγνωρίζανε όπως έπρεπε.
Νοικοκυρά και πάντα φιλόξενη με αστείρευτο χιούμορ λες και
δεν είχε ούτε ένα βάρος, ούτε ένα παράπονο στην ζωή της,
πάντα χαμογελαστή και καλοσυνάτη και με μια απερίγραφτη
ομορφιά και καλοσύνη στη ματιά της σαν μια ζωντανή
Παναγιά, πάντα τραβούσε την προσοχή του κόσμου.
Η μοίρα των πραγματικών ανθρώπων είναι σαν αυτή
των λουλουδιών που έρχονται μόνο για ένα μικρό χρονικό
διάστημα για να αφήσουν το υπέροχο άρωμα τους και
τα όμορφα χρώματα τους και μετά πεθαίνουν. Τέτοιους
ανθρώπους δεν πρέπει να τους θρηνούμε αλλά να τους
χειροκροτούμε υποσχόμενοι ότι θα κάνουμε τα πάντα για
να τους μοιάσουμε.
Εάν το πετύχουμε μόνο τότε θα είναι η μνήμη μας
αιώνια όπως αυτή της Τίνας μας.
Ας είναι ελαφρύ το χώμα που σε σκεπάζει.

The 2011 - 2012 Board is very excited about the new projects we have established. The first is the creation of the Kri
Kri Dance Group. This dance group is for our children that are
in the first through the third grade. They will be performing
at our Family Night scheduled in June and at our Christmas
Party in December. Registration and the first practice was
held during our meeting held in March. We have also begun
a service project to assist members of both our churches in
Salt Lake City: Holy Trinity and Prophet Elias. We have established a food pantry. We will be collecting non-perishable
food items at our meetings and other events. These items
are available for anyone in need in our community.
We are also looking forward to events we host annually. Our Mother’s Day Luncheon and Fashion Show will be
held May 7, 2011. During this event, we honor one of our
members that has contributed to our organization. The
Daughters has, again, volunteered to make the Dolmathes
for our Greek Festival. This is no small task, as our annual
Greek Festival is one of the largest in the West. In 2010, we
used 1,200 pounds of ground beef. The Daughters of Minos
ladies also cook the dolmathes during the festival weekend.
We are also planning a Family Night casual picnic that will
be held sometime in June. We are also planning a day trip
to Wendover, Nevada for fun.
Springfield, Massachusetts
Cretan Ladies Society“Proodos”
Fifty members and friends of the Springfield, MA Cretan
Ladies Society “Proodos” attended a Mothers’ Day luncheon
at Opa-Opa Steakhouse in Southampton, MA on Sunday,
May 1. A delicious lunch accompanied by gifts of roses
from Peter Kantos, proprietor of Opa-Opa, and carnation
bouquets from “Proodos” made the afternoon a success.
Chairpersons of the event were Besi Mavredakis and Ruby
Perakis. Members and guests were welcomed by President
Evangelia Papamarkakis.

The Daughters of Minos in Salt Lake City, Utah held
elections for our new officers on January 26, 2011. We
