Emmanuel- God is With Us:
A Practical Consideration
By Fr. Kosta Petrogeorge
“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel’, which means, ‘God is
with us.” Matthew 1.23
Christmas is a cherished season in which we celebrate God’s “coming
down” to visit our wounded humanity, to embrace our pain, fear,
disillusionment, and death; and in turn to lift us up to a new state and
vision. During this Christmas season I pray that each of you takes the
time to quietly contemplate the deep meaning of Emmanuel- God is
With Us! In turn, I hope you can share this with your loved ones and
others as well.
In order to assist you with this most worthy task, I offer you a story that
I have drawn from the lovely tale of The Lace Tablecloth, by Lynn
Ziergenfuss. The story speaks to parenting, to humanity, and most of all, to the meaning of
Emmanuel, God is with us. I think you will enjoy it!

It was a special occasion for the Benson family. The new pastor had agreed to come for
Christmas dinner following services. The Benson children awoke early morning to the sound of
metal buckets being dragged up from the basement. The mother had already lined up mops and
brooms and arranged dust rags on the upstairs banister, preparing to arm the troops. Cleaning
house for this most important visitor was a sacred mission, and everyone was drafted.
From top to bottom, the Benson house was scrubbed clean. What couldn’t be washed was
dusted. What could be lifted was vacuumed beneath. What could be put away was stored
neatly or dragged to the basement. Outside, Mr. Benson mowed and raked the yard, tended to

the garden and lowers, and edged the sidewalk. Nothing escaped Mrs. Benson’s review.
Sloppy work was not tolerated. Slackers were rounded up and thrown back into the war on
clutter and dust and dirt. By the end of the day when Mrs. Benson finally declared that she was
satisfied, her husband and children gratefully fell into bed to rest before the service, and she
marched into the kitchen.
From the night before until late afternoon she baked and cooked. When the children arose to
prepare to leave for the evening Christmas service, they stared wide-eyed at a table covered
with breads and cake and cookies. A roast simmered in the oven. Mountains of mashed
potatoes stood covered in her best serving bowl. And they weren’t allowed to touch any of it.
In the dining room, Mrs. Benson’s finest china stood at attention on a table covered with her
grandmother’s white-lace tablecloth. It was like something out of a magazine.
The family went to church, then together with the new pastor, walked the three blocks home in
the cool but calm, perfect December night. Snowflakes teased. Even the weather was afraid to
disappoint Mrs. Benson.
The family gathered around the table, the children edging up carefully, afraid to bump it. Mr.
Benson poured iced tea, the pastor said grace, and Mrs. Benson turned to go into the kitchen to
gather up the feast she’d prepared. She was on the very edge of a triumph.
That’s when she heard it: the sound of her seven-year old daughter, Alice, reaching for her
tumbler of iced tea and missing. The glass fell, unbroken, but the tea flowed across the antique
lace tablecloth. Mrs. Benson froze. The pastor froze. . The children sat as if in suspended
animation. Only Alice moved at all, her lower lip trembling as she looked at the disaster she’d
caused, the blemish on an otherwise perfect table. She looked up at her mother, eyes filling
with tears, unable to speak. The girl was devastated. Crushed.
Mrs. Benson walked the few steps back to the table. She didn’t speak. Then, locking eyes with
her daughter, she smiled, reached down, and knocked over her own tumbler of iced tea. One at
a time, Mr. Benson, then the children, then the pastor all did the same. It was a mess. It took a
while to mop up the floor. And the white-lace tablecloth never looked quite the same.
But years later, when the little girl who became a missionary was asked when she first
understood grace, she said it was on that Christmas night that she realized she was more
important than a precious lace tablecloth.
Have a joyful Christmas, Καλά Χριστούγεννα!

PARISH COUNCIL
Dear Parishioners,
In November we had our elections for the parish council. I congratulate the new members, Basil Papoutsis
and Chris Petsinis. They will be an asset to the parish council and I look forward to their participation. I would
also like to thank the members that were reelected - George Spanos, Paul Kokos, and George Mallios - for
their willingness to continue their service.
We will have a General Assembly on Sunday, December 15 and we hope that you will attend. The most
important issue we will discuss is the budget for 2014, including the salaries of the clergy and other
employees. Another important issue is the furnishing of the bookstore.
We are very fortunate that Kiki and James Lloyd have volunteered to manage the bookstore. They are excited
and have many ideas for the future.
The annual New Year's Eve party is planned by the Neohoriton Syllogos. Please plan to attend and make this
a successful event.
The arrival of December means that Christmas is fast approaching and the year will soon be coming to an end.
For all of us, December should not only be a busy time of celebration but a time for reflecting on our
accomplishments or failures and being grateful for the time we have been given with our family and friends.
The end of the year is a good time to assess what we have accomplished - as a community, a priest, a parish
council member, or a parishioner. Have we spiritually enriched our lives or the lives of others? Have we made
a difference to our parish? It is easy to let ourselves off the hook and say that 'under the circumstances we did
the best we could.' When we use that excuse, apathy has set in. We have lowered our standards and made
them the new norm. I believe we can do better. All of us are individually responsible for the spiritual health of
the parish. I challenge all of us to reflect on how we might improve the life of the church.
On behalf of the parish council, we wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
John Harbilas
Parish Council president
PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS
Dear Parishioners:
The Board of Elections, on Sunday, November 24, 2013, conducted the election of five members of the Parish
Council in accordance with the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Archdiocese and our Parish Bylaws. A total
of 37 parishioners in good standing voted, and all 37 ballots were found to be valid.
There were five candidates for election, and they are all to be complimented for offering their services to our
church community. The five individuals newly elected to the Parish Council are Paul Kokos, George J.
Mallios, Basil Papoutsis, Chris Petsinis, and George Spanos They will fill five vacancies that have three-year
terms from January1, 2014 to December 31, 2016.

You patronage is always appreciated.
If you have been regularly attending the Divine

Jim Lloyd have agreed to assume responsibility for
the Bookstore. A transition has been occurring for a

During the last decade, there have been many
changes in the Bookstore. Starting with a small
display table and evolving into a movable display
unit, the Bookstore moved into its current, beautiful
location prior to last year’s Greek Festival.
Through the efforts or Jane Aftosmes and the Parish
Council, we now have a permanent Bookstore that
can become the envy of most parishes in our
Archdiocese. We are now pursuing the design,
approval, construction and installation of functional
and flexible fixtures in the Bookstore. Fixtures
would include display units, display cases, checkout station and storage. They would fit into the
general esthetics of the rest of the church. Progress
on this activity will be communicated in future
articles.
Finally, the patronage of our parish members is
appreciated. You have contributed to the success of
the Bookstore since its conception. Your continued
support of the Bookstore will continue to ensure
that it will be the envy of most parishes.

From the Teachings of the Elder Paisios: On Family Life
Let us compare our trials with the greater trials of others
"The best medicine for our every trial or tribulation is the greater trial of our fellow
human beings --- particularly when we compare it with our own trial and distinguish the
great difference, and the great love that God shows us in allowing only a minor trial for
us. Then we will thank God; we will feel the other's greater pain and will pray from the
heart for God to help them. For example, have I lost one leg? I should say: 'Glory to
Thee, O God! I still have one leg; the other man has lost both.' And even if I end up a
stump of a human being without arms and legs, I can say: 'Glory to Thee, O God! I walked
and used my arms for so many years, while others were born paralyzed.'"
REMEMBER THE SICK, THE SUFFERING, THE AFFLICTED
“The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective” (James 5.16)
During December Fr. Kosta and Fr. Mark will be bringing Holy Communion to all those who
are unable to come to Church for Pascha. PLEASE REMEMBER the homebound of our
community and those who have had recent illness or struggles. If you have loved ones who are
homebound but who’s situation is unknown by the clergy, please feel free to contact the priests
so that they may add your loved ones to the visitations list.
Further, if you know of persons who would like their names posted in our bulletins so that the
faithful can pray for them, please contact our Church secretary. This way the faithful can
consider writing them a card, sending flowers, or even visiting them.

Christmas Services
Tuesday 24th 8:30am Royal Hours: This service is a ancient traditional
preparation for the Christmas liturgies indicated below. In consists primarily of a
collection of prophesies and New Testament readings surrounding the Nativity.
The hymns also specifically sing about the events that surround the Nativity.
Tuesday 24th 8:00PM Vesperal Liturgy of St. Basil the Great. Fasting
guideline: receiving Holy Communion for this service does presuppose a day of
fasting. The faithful are asked to abstain from all food and drink for least 7-8
hours before the service if they are strong enough, including children. If younger
children need sustenance, the food should be as simple as possible, always with
the anticipation of receiving the Holy Sacrament. Remember that fasting should
also include other disciplines; such as finding moments of quiet, and seeking out
forgiveness from others; and forgiving others. The faithful are also encouraged to
embrace the gift of reconciliation through Holy Confession during the 40 days
before Christmas (the season of 40 days begins November 15).

ADVERTISING IN THE SOURCE
In an effort to contain printing costs for monthly newsletters, many churches have turned to paid
advertisements in their publications. Parish Council has agreed to adopt this funding source for our monthly
publication. Doing this would help lessen and possibly erase the expense of publishing the Source.
We now have availability for two pages of paid ads in our monthly Source. The ad price will represent a
year of advertising or 11 issues as we combine the June and July Source into one issue. Ads are sold by the
block. There will be room for 24 ads or blocks per page. You may purchase more than one block for increased
space and presentation. The cost of one ad block is $125 per year, and subsequent blocks would be an
additional $100 per block. For example, a business card ad would equal two blocks and would cost $225.
Camera ready ads are appreciated but not required.
Please help us promote this program. If you own or work for a business that may be interested in
advertising in our Source which is sent out to over 600 families, please contact Mary in the church office. If
you know of a business that may be a potential advertiser, please pass on a contact and phone number.
Examples of businesses that may be interested in advertising could be Greek bands, importers, baptismal
supplies/clothing stores, and jewelers specializing in crosses. Other possibilities could be lawyers, accountants,
real estate agents, etc. The only ads we cannot accept are ones pertaining to credit cards, travel, or insurance.
Please contact the church office as soon as possible if interested in this program.
