Ten Years
This August marks ten years of being together with all of you at the
blessed community of Saint Spyridon. For these ten years of ministry, I
am grateful to our patron Saint Spyridon whose footsteps have marked
and blessed every aspect of our community life. Furthermore, I am forever indebted to His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos for His unwavering
trust and pastoral guidance through the years and to all the worthy
priests who labored in the vineyard of Saint Spyridon before me. Finally,
I am most thankful for all you, the dedicated and loving faithful of Saint
Spyridon for granting my family and me a beautiful place to call home.
Looking back over the past ten years, I can’t begin to recount all the beautiful memories whether they took place in the Divine services, weddings,
baptisms, festivals, dinner dances, our schools, bible studies, social gatherings, field trips, service projects, games, and youth events. Countless
are the volunteers who offered their time, talent, and treasure, to make
Saint Spyridon the vibrant and youthful community that it has always
been. They follow the example of those who came before them, genera-

tions of faithful parishioners, many of whom we have already entrusted
to the eternal kingdom.
At this ten-year mark it is also useful to make an assessment of our parish
life in order to help set a course, God willing, for the years to come. Our
community is indeed blessed with wonderful parishioners, both young
and young at heart, both those who have been in the community for generations and those who have recently joined. With over three hundred
services yearly, our parish is first and foremost a vibrant community of
prayer, celebrating and nourishing our souls with the grace of the Holy
Spirit and the prayers of the saints. Our worship life is at the center of all
we do and for that we must be proud and thankful to our good and merciful Lord. As a result, all our organizations work peacefully, fruitfully,
with great leadership and transparency that inspires trust and participation by the entire community in beautifying our church edifice, and supporting our parish ministries, our Archdiocese, and those among us in
need. Our schools, Religious Education, Plutarchos Greek School, and
our Archangels Academy, are the most joyous aspect of our community
life. Over the years, our schools have been growing steadily as they continue to attract good and faithful young families in our midst. Our parish
ministries have grown thanks to our dedicated volunteers and staff, and
new programs have been established such as the Byzantine Music School,
iconography school, internet ministry, Handmaidens for our young
women, and the Greek Experience for our Greek School graduates. Overall, we can be very proud of our community and thankful to our patron
Saint Spyridon for guiding us to where we are at this time.
Of course there is always room for growth in all aspects of our community life. While our community is growing in the number of stewards, I
hope to see that our Sunday attendance grows proportionally. Participating in the Sunday and feast day services is the main reason for our community’s existence. While all the programs and ministries are important,
they are meaningful only within the context of an active worship life.
Sometimes we are not aware of the significance of our liturgical life because of lack of education. Over the next few years we should take advantage of more opportunities for adult religious education through classes and the internet. Our youth ministries are always in need for new
leaders. Whether in Sunday School, P.T.A., or our athletics and youth
groups, we are in constant need of volunteers and leaders in order for
these ministries to grow. Saint Spyridon’s is the largest parish in our Metropolis without a second priest or a hired youth worker. Our parish finances simply do not support hiring any more help. It is up to us as parents and young leaders to volunteer as youth workers, Sunday School
teachers, coaches, or in the P.T.A. in order to sustain and grow these vital
ministries. Finally, as successful as our fundraisers have been, such as
the festival and the craft show, we should not continue to rely on these
fundraisers for our annual budget. At some point in the near future, we
have to show to all the non-Orthodox visitors who support our fundraisers that we can support our church on our own. It is proper and right to
do so. This would show to them and most importantly to ourselves that
our parish is important enough to us that we do not rely on the wider
community to pay our bills. I hope that in the years to come that we will
become more fiscally self-sufficient.
We are at the footsteps of our 100th anniversary. This very important milestone is coming up in three short years.
In the coming months we need to put together the 100th anniversary committee. We need to start thinking about
the variety of events that will mark this celebration throughout the anniversary year and the different ways in
which we will honor and mark this momentous event. Everyone who is interested in participating in this committee should communicate with the church office or with me. In the meantime, I am looking forward to the
completion of our iconography, which will be a crowning conclusion for so many of our projects that have beautified our church edifice over the years. However, after the iconography is finished, or when we cross the threshold of the 100th anniversary, what lies ahead of us? What will all these little ones sitting on the front rows of our
Sunday School look to accomplish? Let us pray that our patron Saint Spyridon will guide them and us onto
greater journeys to come.
Thankful for ten years of blessings and for all of you faithful of Saint Spyridon.
Fr. Tilemahos

PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS
Dear Parishioners and sisters in Christ,
Philadelphia was the setting for the Clergy Laity and Philoptochos Bienial Convention of 2014.
The theme this year was "The Orthodox Christian Family A dwelling of Christ and a
witness of His Gospel". Over 440 delegates represented their chapters. We are the
largest Women's Christian Philanthropic organization in the United States, boasting
over 27,000 members.
For over eight decades Philoptochos has continued its mission of helping those in
need. In the past two years we have contributed over $3,000,000.00 to worthy causes, thanks to the efforts of our hard working women around the country.
The agenda at the conference was filled with informative and inspiring topics and
ongoing programs. Mental illness was discussed focusing on our communities journey in understanding and
hope. The Philoptochos literacy Program with Nick Katsioris attorney author of the Loukoumi children's books
was presented.
Other Philoptochos ministries were reported on the convention. St Basil's Academy, Hellenic College Holy Cross,
IOCC, Orthodox Christian Mission Center, and orthodox Christian fellowship which ministers to our college students were all reported on. Social Services and what is available to all chapters by National Philoptochos was explained.
Along with the theme was stated that we need to strengthen our family unit then the church's. This has been
done by: having mandatory seminars for new couples, churching of forty day blessing in front of the church,
family nights at church and at home, formation of Handmaidens, GOYA and other organizations.
We spoke of protecting our environment.
Chapter challenges or special projects were presented by various chapters.
The Agape Award was presented to a lady from each Metropolis who gave her all to her chapter for many years.
Religious freedom for our Patriarchate and throughout the world was presented by Michael Emanuel, Archon
and Fox News reporter.
Prison ministry was presented and how children of the prisoners are being helped.
A very poignant presentation was given by a woman caught in human trafficiking and who has formed an organization in stopping it.
Baskets were made with supplies and items needed by homeless veterans who are given
A second chance.
Catherine Avgiris, chief financial officer of Comcast told us in reference to leadership and mentoring "if you want
to go fast go alone, if you want to go far take others with you."
The rebuilding of St. Nicholas Shrine at ground zero was presented.
There was a presidents' forum discussing how we can improve our chapters and our role as president.
As one can see the topics were many and the rewards were even more.
I thank you for the opportunity in representing our chapter and quoting one of our presenters to go far take others with you. Thank you Philoptochos ladies for making us go far!
With sisterly agape,
Olga Paxinos
Philoptochos President

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR FESTIVAL SUPPORTERS
A big Thank You to goes out to all those who planned,
worked and supported this year’s festival. Once again,
our parish was successful in making the weekend truly
enjoyable for everyone.
Many thanks to our festival chairman Kosta Labrakis,
and his planning committee for their efforts in making
everything run smoothly.
Of course, we couldn’t pull it off without all of our
tireless volunteers that worked so hard to: prepare,
cook and serve all of the delicious food; serve us beverages to keep us cool; make frappe after frappe in the
relaxing Café Opa; sell many, many raffle tickets; offer
Greek & Orthodox items for sale at the Bookstore; greet everyone with a warm smile at the Welcome
Entrance. To our Philoptochos ladies, who baked and sold delectable sweets & loukoumades, we love
all you do for us! To the youth of our parish, and the very talented St. Spyridon Dance Troupe, taught
by Angelo Angelos thank you for entertaining us with your beautiful dancing! We are also grateful to
our generous donors for the ongoing support.
