Christ is Risen!
Αγαπητά μέλη και φίλοι,
My fellow Cretans,
Xριστός Ανέστη και Χρόνια Πολλά! I hope that you and your families had a joyous and blessed Easter! Our rich tradition of
candles at the Anastasi, Holy Communion with your family on Holy Saturday morning, sharing mageretsa with family and friends after the Anastasi, or celebrating the next day with the lamb on the spit dates back over 2,000 years. By repeating these traditions year
after year, we teach and pass them on to our children. It distinguishes us from the rest of the world as Greek Orthodox Christians.
We returned from Crete a few weeks ago, where I forwarded the generous donations you sent in for the Relief for Crete program
of the PAA. I am quite sure it helped many families to also partake in the celebration of the rising of our Lord Jesus Christ. After all,
this is what we are all about; to support our fellow man by supporting the hungry and the needy on our island of Crete.
On this trip to Crete, my wife and I chose an indirect route. We headed westward, making a journey from Chicago, to Los Angeles,
Melbourne, Sydney, Dubai, Athens, and then to our final destination, Crete. Quite a trip and quite the flying time!
I bring back with me greetings and well wishes from our fellow Cretans from Melbourne and Sydney. I was very pleased to see and
meet with them, to discuss with them the PAA, and to listen to the stories of how they got there and what their families did there. I
was very impressed by their programs and the projects that their Cretan chapters offer. The Greeks of Australia rank third as a nationality nationwide and they have made good progress with both the federal and local governments in getting many of their programs
and projects subsidized by the government. It just so happens that the new president of the PSK is their very own president, Antoni
Tsourdalaki. Antoni has brought their people and their programs together and is a Cretan that we all should support as well in the PSK.
Every year on May 20, we observe an infamous day in our history. We commemorate “The Battle of Crete,” the day that our countrymen stood up against the Nazi troops. It began on the morning of May 20, 1941, when Germany launched an airborne invasion of
Crete. After one day of fighting, the Germans suffered very heavy casualties and none of their objectives had been achieved. It was
a 10-day battle that amazed not only Hitler and Germany, but the entire world. The German losses were so extensive and it affected
Hitler’s strategy so much, that he never allowed further large scale airborne operations. It is also said that this 10-day delay threw off
the timing of Hitler’s master plan that sent the Germans into Russia much later into the winter season, and which ultimately caused
the downfall of the German empire.
Winston Churchill said, “Hence we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks!”
We honor those brave Cretan men, women and children that stood up to fight for their freedom, and to fight for their rights. Αιωνία η Μνήμη τους! May their memory be eternal!
Finally, I want to remind all of you to strongly consider investing in the future of your family and rich heritage by purchasing a

Χριστός Ανέστη, Χρόνια Πολλά. Ελπίζω εσείς και οι οικογένειές σας να περάσατε ευλογημένο και χαρούμενο Πάσχα. Η Θεία Κοινωνία το
Μεγάλο Σάββατο το πρωι, οι λαμπάδες τής Αναστάσης, η μαγειρίτσα μετά την Ανάσταση και το σουβλιστό αρνι ειναι έθιμα τής πλούσιας
παράδοσής μας για περισσότερο απο 2000 χρονια. Διατηρόντας και επαναλαμβάνοντας τις συνήθειες αυτές τις μεταδίδομε και στα παιδια
μας. Αυτό είναι που ξεχωριζει εμάς απο τούς υπολοίπους ανθρώπους τού κόσμου σαν Ελληνες Ορθόδοξους.
Πριν μερικές εβδομάδες επιστρέψαμε απο την Κρήτη, οπου και μεταφέραμε την γεννεόδωρη προσφορά σας μεσω της προσπαθειας τής
Παγκρητικής «Ανακούφιση για την Κρήτη». Ειμαι πεπισμένος οτι η δωρεά σας αυτη βοήθησε σε πολλές οικογένειες κατά την εορταστική περίοδο
τού Πασχα. Αλλωστε, ενας απο τους σκοπούς της οργάνωσής μας ειναι και η βοηθεια τών αδελφών Κρητών τής γενέτειρας.
Στο ταξίδι μας για την Κρητη, η γυναικα μου κι εγω ξεκινήσαμε απο το Σικαγο και μεσω Los Angeles, με πρώτο σταθμό την Melbourne, μετά το Sydney, μετά το Dubai, και κατόπιν την Αθηνα φθάσαμε στον τελικό προορισμό μας τήν Κρήτη. Ηταν ενα αξέχαστο ταξιδι εμπειρίας αλλά και απόστασης.
Σας μεταφέρω τους εγκάρδιους χαιρετισμούς και τις θερμότερες ευχές των συμπατριωτών μας απο την Μελβούρνη και το Σύδνεη. Είχα την
χαρά να συναντηθώ, να γνωρίσω και να μιλήσω με πολλούς Κρητες, να συζητήσω μαζι τους για την Παγκρητικη και παράλληλα να ακούσω τις
δικές τους ιστορίες για το πότε και πώς εφθασαν στην μακρινή Αυστραλία καθως και γιά τα επιτεύγματά τους στην καινούργια πατρίδα τους.
Εντυπωσιάστηκα από τα προγράματα και τις πρωτοβουλίες τών Κρητικών συλλόγων εκεί. Οι Ελληνες της Αυστραλίας ειναι η 3η σε αριθμο εθνικότης
με μεγάλη πρόοδο σε ολους τους τομείς σε κρατικό και ιδιωτικό επίπεδο και το σπουδαιότερο εχουν επιτύχει πολλά απο τα προγράμματά τους
να χρηματοδοτούντε απο το κράτος. Οπως ισως ήδη γνωρίζετε, ο νέος προεδρος των Κρητών του Κόσμου ειναι ο εκεί διαμένοντας Αντώνης
Τσουρδαλάκης. Ο Αντώνης εχει επιτύχει να ενωσει τους Κρήτες και να εφαρμωσει καταπληκτικα προγράμματα, ειναι ενας Κρητικός τον οποιον
πρεπει να υποστηριξομε καθώς επίσης και την οργάνωση που αντιπροσωπεύει.
Κάθε χρόνο στις 20 Μαιου, γιορτάζομε μία ξεχωριστή ημέρα τής νεώτερης ιστορίας μας. Τιμούμε τους πεσόντας στην Μάχη της Κρήτης,
αποθέτομε φόρο τιμής στους πατριώτες μας που αντιστάθηκαν και έπεσαν στον άνισο αγώνα με τους Γερμανούς. Το πρωι τής 20ης Μαίου
του 1941 οι Γερμανοι πραγματοποίησαν εισβολη στην Κρητη από θάλασσα και αέρα. Οι Γερμανοι υπέστησαν μεγάλες απωλειες από
την πρώτη κιολας ημέρα της μαχης με τους άοπλους Κρητικούς και σύντομα αντελήφθησαν οτι τα σχέδια τους απέτυχαν. Οι δεκα μερες
τής αντίστασης των Κρητικών εντυπωσίασε και κατέπληξε οχι μονο τον Χιτλερ και την Γερμανια αλλά και ολόκληρη την ανθρωπότητα. Οι
Γερμανικές δυνάμεις ειχαν τεράστιες, ανυπολόγιστες απώλιες τόσες ωστε να αναγκαστούν να αλλάξουν στρατιγική και να μην επιχειρήσουν
αλλες μεγάλες αεροπορικές επιδρομές. Η καθυστέρηση των 10 ημερών στήν Κρήτη ειχε καταλυτική επίδραση στα κατακτητικά σχέδια
τού Χιτλερ. Ανάγκασε τα στρατεύματά του να φθάσουν στην Ρωσία πολυ αργότερα απο οτι ειχαν αρχικά προγραμματίσει. Εκει βρέθηκαν
αντιμέτωποι με τις δύσκολες συνθήκες του χειμώνα και αυτο εφερε και το αποτέλεσμα τής πτώσης της Γερμανικής αυτοκρατορίας. Για αυτό
και αργότερα ο Winston Churchill ειπε οτι «απο τωρα κι επειτα δεν θα λεμε οτι οι Ελληνες πολεμάνε σαν ήρωες αλλα οι ήρωες πολεμάνε σαν
Ελληνες!» Τιμάμε ολους εκείνους τούς Κρήτες γυναίκες, άνδρες και παιδιά που αντιστάθηκαν και πολέμησαν για την ελευθερία, την τιμή και
την αξιοπρέπειά τους.
Αιωνία τους η μνήμη!!!
Σ αυτό το σημείο θα ήθελα να υπενθυμίσω και να παροτρύνω ολους να επενδύσετε στο μέλλον τής οικογένειάς σας και τής πλούσιας
καταγωγής μας αγοράζοντας ενα «time share unit» (γιατι οχι και δύο ή και τρια) στο Μινωικο Χωριό στο Ατσιπόπουλο Κρήτης. Με μόνο
$1.600 μπορείτε να βάλετε τό θεμέλιο λήθο στο οικοδόμημα το οποίο θα αποτελέσει μελλοντική «Γεφυρα με την Κρήτη». Μόνο οταν αρχίσει
η ανοικοδόμηση τότε θα χρειαστεί να στήλετε περισσότερα χρήματα. Σας προτρέπω να επισκεφθήτε την ιστοσελίδα του MCV στο www.
paamcv.com για να ενημερωθείτε για τις λεπτομέρειες. Μην ξεχνάτε οτι οχι μονο ατομα αλλά και σύλλογοι μπορούν να αγοράσουν «time
share units». Αυτο μπορει να γίνει και ενας έμεσος τροπος για να συγκεντρώσετε χρήματα για τον σύλλογό σας. Για παράδειγμα, μπορείτε
να κληρώνετε κάθε χρόνο ενα λαχνό για μια εβδομάδα στο Μινωικο χωριό και μ’αυτο τον τρόπο θα ξεπληρωθεί το κόστος αγοράς και
παράλληλα θα βοηθήσετε οικονομικά και το σύλλογό σας. Τώρα ειναι η πιο κατάλληλη ευκαιρία για την επένδυση αυτή. Και να θυμάστε, το
μόνο που χρειάζεστε τώρα ειναι να στήλετε τα $1.600 για να κρατήσετε μιά θέση στον πολιτιστικό μας παράδεισο. Ενεργήσετε τώρα πριν να
ειναι αργά.

Las Vegas Συγκέντρωση
Αγαπητοί Συμπατριώτες καί Συμπατριώτισσες,
Σας ενημερώνω ότι προσπαθώ να εκπληρώσω
τις υποχρεώσεις μου απέναντι στήν
Παγκρητική ‘Ενωση Αμερικής και ειδικώτερα
πρός τά γυναικεία τμήματα.
Τον Οκτώβριο του 2011, παραβρέθηκα
στον ετήσιο χορό, του γυναικείου συλλόγου
«Οι Θυγατέρες τής Κρήτης»στό Denver Colorado. Έμεινα με τις καλύτερες εντυπώσεις και
τούς εύχομαι νά συνεχίζουν το έργο τους με
αγάπη και συνεργασία.
Τό Νοέμβριο του 2011, παραβρέθηκα
στην εκδήλωση του γυναικείου συλλόγου
«Πασιφάη ΝΥ», γιά τά 70 χρόνια, από την
ίδρυσή του. Εκ μέρους της Παγκρητικής
Ένωσης Αμερικής, παρουσίασα τιμητική
πλάκα. Συγχαρητήρια στην Πρόεδρο κα
Διαμαντάκη καί σέ όλο τό διοικητικό
συμβούλιο γιά τήν άψογη διοργάνωση τής
εκδήλωσης.
Τόν Ιανουάριο παραβρέθηκα στις
εκδηλώσεις της χειμερινής συγκέντρωσης της
Παγκρήτιας Νεολαίας στη Ν.Y. Διεπίστωσα
γιά μία ακόμη φορά, ότι έχουμε δυναμικούς
καί δραστήριους νέους καί νέες πού
προδιαγράφουν λαμπρό το μέλλον τής
Παγκρητικής Ένωσης Αμερικής.
Συγχαρητήρια στο Πρόεδρο
της Παγκρητικής Νεολαίας, Χρήστο
Μαραγκουδάκη καί στους συλλόγους της
νεολαίας Ιδομενέας καί Λάβρυς Ν.Υ. για
την άψογη διοργάνωση της χειμερινής
συγκέντρωσης και την πρωτοφανή επιτυχία.
Στίς 21 Ιανουαρίου του 2012,
παραβρέθηκα στην εκδήλωση «Κρητικό
Πανόραμα» του γυναικείου συλλόγου
Αδελφότης «Βrooklyn N.Y.», γιά τά 30
χρόνια από την ίδρυσή του. Στη λύρα έπαιξε
ό Ανδρέας Λιλικάκης ενώ τό χορευτικό
συγκρότημα «Βιγλάτορες» από τήν Κρήτη,
παρουσίασαν παραδοσιακούς ξεχασμένους
Κρητικούς χορούς.

Η Παγκρητική Ένωση Αμερικής, τίμησε
την εκδήλωση με αναμνηστική πλάκα.
Συγχαρητήρια στην Πρόεδρο Kα. Ξενάκη καί
σε όλους όσους δούλεψαν για την επιτυχία
τής εκδήλωσης.
Τόν Φεβρουάριο, πραγματοποιήθηκε
η συνάντηση των γυναικών στο Las Vegas
Nevada, με μεγάλη επιτυχία. Είχαμε την
συμμετοχή γυναικών από Springfield, MA,
Ohio, Chicago, ΙL, Detroit, MI, California,
New Jersey, New York, Florida, Salt Lake City,
Toronto Canada.
Συγχρόνως είχαμε τήν δεύτερη
συνεδρίαση τού παρόντος Δ.Συμβουλίου τής
Π.Ε.Α καί συνάντηση μελών τού C.A.N.
Οι παρευρισκόμενοι είχαν την ευκαιρία
ν’απολαύ σουν τον θαυμάσιο καιρό τού Las
Vegas, να δουν Shows, εκδρομές στό Grand
Canyon, HooverDam και να δοκιμάσουν την
τύχη τους στα τυχερά παιγνίδια.
Είχαμε επίσης την ευκαιρία να
συναντηθούμε όλοι καί νά γνωριστούμε
με τα μέλη τού τοπικού συλλόγου,
καί ευχαριστούμε τον πρόεδρο καί
Μαυρομιχελάκη καί την σύζυγό του για την
ευγενική τους φιλοξενία.
Η συνάντηση των γυναικών και η
συνεδρίαση του Δ.Συμβουλίου είχαν θετικά
αποτελέσματα και όλοι εργάζονται για
την πραγματοποίηση των στόχων και των
προγραμμάτων της Π.Ε.Α.
Ξεκίνησε έρανος για την ενίσχυση τού
Φιλανθρωπικού ταμίου τής Αρχιεπισκοπής
Κρήτης καί τους εθελοντές ιατρούς, οι
οποίοι προσφέρουν αφιλοκερδώς ιατρική
περίθαλψη στους άνεργους καί άστεγους
συμπατριώτες μας στην Κρήτη.
Δωρεές μπορείτε νά στείλετε στην
γραμματέα της Π.Ε.Α. Η επιταγή ( check ) να
γίνει P.A.A Philanthropic, με την σημείωση
Crete Relief. Donations are tax deductible.
Όπως καθιερώθηκε από την περασμένη
διοίκηση της Π.Ε.Α και στο συνέδρειο του
2011 στην Florida, έγινε γιά πρώτη φορά,
τιμητική διάκριση στους συλλόγους με την
μεγαλύτερη αύξηση μελών κατά τό διάστημα
Ιούνιος 2009/Ιούνιος 2011. Τα διακριθέντα
τμήματα ήταν, σύλλογος Κρητών «St Louis», ο
σύλλογος γυναικών «ΚΡΗΤΗ» Detroit MI και ο
σύλλογος νεολαίας «ΜΙΝΟΣ» Clearwater FL.
Σε συνεργασία με τον Γ΄αντιπρόεδρο
και με στόχο την αύξηση των μελών θα
επαναληφθεί η τιμητική διάκριση στό
επόμενο συνέδρειο τό 2013 στό «Akron

τού συζύγου μου Γεώργη. Ιδιαίτερα θέλω να
ευχαριστήσω τον σύλλογο και τα μέλη του
συλλόγου «Κρήτη» του Palm Harbor Φλώριδας,
για την συμπαράστασή τους. Θα αισθάνομαι

Η Μάχη της
Κρήτης
Battle of Crete

The fall of Crete took place in May 1941.
The battle for Crete—’Operation Merkur’—
was unique because it used the greatest
number of German paratroopers during
World War II. The fall of Crete also reinforced in the mind of the Wehrmacht (the
unified armed forces of Germany from 1935
to 1945) the value of its paratroopers. Hitler,
however, was shocked by the number of
men lost, and at the end of the campaign to
capture Crete, he ordered that paratroopers
no longer be used to spearhead an attack on
a major target.
Crete had great strategic importance in
the Mediterranean because of its central position in the Aegean and the fact that it is the
largest island in the eastern Mediterranean.
The harbor at Souda Bay was the largest in the
Mediterranean Sea and an ideal base for naval
operations. Control of the island was desirable
to both the British and Germans. For the British, it would give them even greater control
of the Mediterranean and consolidate their
control of the northern end of the Suez Canal.

British bombers could also use the airfields to
bomb the oil plants at Ploesti in Romania. The
Germans could use the base to attack British
shipping in the area and disrupt the British
use of the Suez. Crete could also be used as
a stopping off point for men heading to the
North African theatre of war.
In 1941, Crete was a relatively primitive
island. Roads were poor and transport was
difficult. There was only one main road that
crossed east to west across the island, and this
could only take one line of traffic at a go. The
"roads" that ran north to south off of this road
were no more than dirt tracks. Bridges along
the roads could not take vehicles that weighed
more than 7 tons. The three rail lines on the
island had no strategic value. The main road
ran across the north of the island with airports
coming off of it as did the three main harbors
on the island—all in the north. A "normal"
attack on the island would be fraught with
dangers as the terrain inland was extremely
rugged while large areas of the island were
covered with olive groves, which would give
troops many places to hide.
After Italy had invaded Greece, Britain
occupied Crete with a brigade-sized unit.
General Archibald Wavell, commander-inchief in the region, had pressing problems
elsewhere and could not commit more
troops to the island. Seemingly constant
changes to senior officers on the island did
little to create any consistency of policy regarding the island’s defense. In March 1941,
command of the island passed to MajorGeneral E.C. Weston, who asked Wavell to
place three brigades on the island. However,
the British were facing difficulties in North
Africa and Wavell simply could not spare the
men. Therefore, Crete’s commanding officer
had to command an island that he believed
was not properly defended.
After the withdrawal of British and
Commonwealth troops from Greece in April
1941, 25,000 men, mainly from New Zealand
and Australia, disembarked at Souda Bay
with their own weapons but little else.
On April 30, 1941, Wavell flew to Crete to
meet with Weston. Wavell relieved Weston
of his command and replaced him with New
Zealander Major-General Freyberg, whose
men had landed in Souda Bay. Freyberg accepted the command but with reluctance.
Freyberg had taken on a difficult task.
There was a general agreement that the
Germans would attack the island in the near
future, and that the island was insufficiently
defended. Freyberg had 30,000 British troops
and 11,000 Greek troops under his command.
He also had to look after 15,000 Italian prisoners of war. Freyberg estimated that he needed
between 20,000 and 30,000 tons of supplies
each month. These supplies would have to be
brought in by ships, which would make easy
targets for German bombers.
Freyberg was given some help by Wavell.
Twenty-two tanks were sent to the island
with their crew; an infantry battalion of the

ιστορία η αεραπoρική απόβαση, που
επιχείρησε η Ναζιστική Γερμανία κατά
της Κρήτης στις 20 Μαΐου 1941 και
η οποία έληξε δώδεκα μέρες μετά,
την 1η Ιουνίου, με την κατάληψη
της Μεγαλονήσου. Ήταν μία από
τις σημαντικότερες μάχες του Β’
Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, με πολλές
πρωτιές σε επιχειρησιακό επίπεδο.
Η απόφαση για την επίθεση στην
Κρήτη ελήφθη από το Χίτλερ στις 25
Απριλίου 1941, λίγες μέρες μετά την
παράδοση της ηπειρωτικής Ελλάδας
στις δυνάμεις του Άξονα, και έλαβε
την κωδική ονομασία «Επιχείρηση
Ερμής» («Unternehmen Merkur»).
Ήταν αμυντική και όχι επιθετική
επιχείρηση, όπως αποδείχθηκε
αργότερα. Οι Γερμανοί είχαν ως στόχο
να εξασφαλίσουν τα νοτιοανατολικά
τους νώτα, ενόψει της Επιχείρησης
Μπαρμπαρόσα (Εκστρατεία στη
Ρωσία) και να εξορμήσουν στη Βόρεια
Αφρική, με εφαλτήριο την Κρήτη, όπως
πίστευαν οι Σύμμαχοι.
Τις παραμονές της επίθεσης, οι
Σύμμαχοι είχαν τακτικό πλεονέκτημα
σε ξηρά και θάλασσα, ενώ οι
Γερμανοί στον αέρα. Έτσι, το
γερμανικό επιτελείο αποφάσισε να
διεξαγάγει την επιχείρηση από αέρος
με τη χρησιμοποίηση δυνάμεων
αλεξιπτωτιστών σε ευρεία κλίμακα,
για πρώτη φορά στην παγκόσμια
στρατιωτική ιστορία. Επικεφαλής
των γερμανικών δυνάμεων τέθηκε ο
πτέραρχος Κουρτ Στούντεντ, 51 ετών,
βετεράνος πιλότος του Α’ Παγκοσμίου
Πολέμου. Είχε στη διάθεσή του 1190
αεροπλάνα (πολεμικά και μεταγωγικά)
και 29.000 άνδρες (αλεξιπτωτιστές
και πεζικάριους), ενώ οι Ιταλοί θα
συνεισέφεραν 3.000 στρατιώτες.
Την Κρήτη υπερασπίζονταν όσοι
έλληνες στρατιώτες είχαν παραμείνει
στο νησί και δυνάμεις της Βρετανικής
Κοινοπολιτείας (Βρετανοί, Αυστραλοί
και Νεοζηλανδοί στρατιωτικοί),
που είχαν διεκπεραιωθεί από την
κατεχόμενη Ελλάδα. Το γενικό
πρόσταγμα είχε ο νεοζηλανδός
στρατηγός Μπέρναρντ Φράιμπεργκ,
52 ετών, βετεράνος και αυτός του Α’
Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Οι υπερασπιστές
της Μεγαλονήσου ανήρχοντο σε
περίπου 40.000, αλλά είχαν ανεπαρκή
και απαρχαιωμένο οπλισμό, ιδίως οι
Έλληνες.

εγκατασταθεί ο
Βασιλιάς Γεώργιος
Β’ και η εξόριστη
Ελληνική Κυβέρνηση
υπό τον Εμμανουήλ
Τσουδερό. Οι Σύμμαχοι
γνώριζαν με μεγάλες
λεπτομέρειες το
γερμανικό σχέδιο
επίθεσης, αφού είχαν
κατορθώσει για πρώτη
φορά να σπάσουν
του γερμανικό
κώδικα επικοινωνιών
(«Επιχείρηση
Αίνιγμα»). Όμως, το
πλεονέκτημα αυτό δεν
το εκμεταλλεύτηκαν,
εξαιτίας των
διαφωνιών του Φράιμπεργκ με τους
ανωτέρους του στο Λονδίνο. Οι
Αμερικανοί δεν είχαν εισέλθει ακόμη
στον Πόλεμο.
Η γερμανική επίθεση εκδηλώθηκε
στις 8 το πρωί της 20ης Μαΐου
1941, με τη ρίψη αλεξιπτωτιστών σε
δύο μέτωπα: στο αεροδρόμιο του
Μάλεμε και στην ευρύτερη περιοχή
των Χανίων. Τα πρώτα κύματα των
αλεξιπτωτιστών ήταν εύκολη λεία για
τους Νεοζηλανδούς και τους Έλληνες
που υπεράσπιζαν το Μάλεμε. Στις
μάχες έλαβε μέρος και μεγάλος αριθμός
αμάχων με ό,τι όπλο είχε στη διάθεσή
του, από μαχαίρια ως όπλα από την
εποχή της Κρητικής Επανάστασης.

2nd Leicesters was sent and 49 artillery guns
were made after cannibalizing 100 sent by
Wavell (many of which were in a poor state of
repair). Though these armaments were well
received, the tanks were very thinly spread
over the 160-mile wide island. On May 19,
Freyberg ordered all planes off the island
because he believed they would suffer serious losses despite the bravery of the pilots.
However, by doing this, he left the air bases he
needed to control less well-defended.
The Germans had assembled a fearsome
force to attack Crete. The paratroopers had
500 transport planes, 75 gliders, 280 bombers, 150 dive-bombers, 180 fighters and 40
reconnaissance planes at their disposal. In
total, they had 10,000 men who could be
dropped by parachute and they had a total
attack force of 22,500 men.
The Germans attacked on May 20, 1941.
It was codenamed "Operation Merkur."
Paratroopers landed at Heráklion, Réthimo,
Máleme and Chania—all on the northern
coastline. Controlling Máleme was vital to
the Germans because it would give them
control of the airfield based there.
The Germans had many advantages over
the defenders. One major advantage was
their radios, which allowed them to communicate with each other once they landed on
the island. In comparison, Colonel Andrew,
commander of the 22nd New Zealand Battalion, had just one working radio. He never
knew how well his battalion was performing
or their exact location on the island.
However, the Germans suffered greater
than anticipated losses. Men from the New
Zealand Army did a great deal of damage to
the III Parachute Battalion, killing about 200
men before they had even landed. The cov10

er from olive trees was excellent, as was the
visibility the New Zealanders had. However,
the lack of communications led the New
Zealanders into believing that they were
enjoying success elsewhere. Brigadier Hargest of the Fifth Brigade had assumed that
all units were enjoying the same success
as the 23rd. As he received no information
to counter this, he assumed the German
landings were successfully countered. To an
extent, at this stage in the German attack,
this was reasonably true. The Germans had
landed as planned at Chania, but had suffered severe losses at the hands of the 4th
New Zeland Brigade. The same was true for
the landing at Réthimo. The Germans came
up against strong resistance from the 2/1st
and 2/11th Australian Battalions and had
suffered heavy losses. The Germans experienced the same at Heráklion. By the end
of May 20, the Allied defenders had good
reason to be confident and Freyberg sent a
reasonably upbeat message to Wavell about
his progress on Crete. However, he did not
know about developments at Máleme on
the west of Crete.
The Germans, commanded by General
Student, had not expected such setbacks. Only
at Máleme was there any glimmer of hope for
the Germans because it appeared they had
captured a landing field. Student decided to
send all his remaining paratroopers there to
capture the airfield. By May 21, he had succeeded in his objective and the Germans were
free to land their planes at Máleme.
The British planned to bomb the airfield
at 01.00 on May 22, and launch a counteroffensive against the Germans at Máleme
at 02.00. In fact, it started at 03.30—90
minutes late because units moving to the

area were delayed in their approach. The
attack was ground down by small pockets
of well-hidden German paratroopers who
fought tenaciously.
Despite heroics, the British counterattack failed. There simply had not been
enough men or enough waves of attacks to
severely occupy the German paratroopers.
Also, the attack had received no air support.
As a result, the Germans could continue
to use the airfield to fly in reinforcements
and supplies, including three battalions of
mountain infantry. Faced with growing German opposition, the men of the 5th Brigade
involved in the fight for Máleme withdrew
east on May 24.
With Máleme occupied, the Germans
could land fighter planes to support the
advance of their troops. The overall commander of the Germans on Crete, General
Ringel, decided to consolidate his troops on
May 23, before moving on. By May 24, he
was ready to move from west to east across
the island since the British held defensive
positions along the coastal region. For Ringel,
such a move inland into mountainous terrain
proved of little concern as he had two battalions of mountain infantry at his disposal—
men trained to operate in such terrain.
On May 24, the Germans launched a
number of heavy attacks on the British lines.
The British used old trenches that were 2,200
meters in length—far too long to be defended in depth. They were also open to mortar
fire and the Germans' fire was accurate.
Freyberg asked Wavell for Royal Air
Force support. Some was sent but not
enough to change a deteriorating situation.
However, commandos landed at night to
give support. By the end of May 24, Freyberg
was already contemplating defeat. He knew
his men lacked transport and artillery and
that the Germans were making relentless
progress around his southern flank. At
Galatas, for example, Freyberg had one "battalion" of 400 men who, at one point, only
had 10 mortar bombs to face the Germans.
In comparison, the Germans at Galatas had
six battalions of mountain infantry with
unlimited air and artillery support. Wavell
needed reinforcements, but where could he
get them and how could they get to Crete
with the Luftwaffe so dominant in the air?
Despite all the efforts by the New
Zealanders at Galatas, the town fell to the
Germans on May 25. The soldiers from New
Zealand who survived the battle claimed it
was the most fierce fighting New Zealand-
ers faced in all of World War II. With Galatas
taken, the British had very little with which
to protect Souda Bay—the only way any
form of supplies/reinforcements could get in
to help them.
As the Germans advanced, communication between British commanders on the
ground became more dislocated. Troops
were withdrawn by their local officers
when Freyberg had ordered them to hold
their line. Or troops were sent forward to
engage the Germans, only to find other Allied troops had withdrawn when they were
expected to be at that position. By May 26,
Freyberg informed Wavell that an evacuation was the only option, but he could not
guarantee that all his men could be evacuated. Though the British continued to put
up resistance, the command structure was
deteriorating due to the continual advance
of the Germans.
On May 27, Allied troops started withdrawing from Souda Bay to Sfakia in the south
of the island with commandos and 130 men
from the Maori Battalion covering their rear.
Freyberg had planned to evacuate 1,000 men
from Sfakia on the night of May 28, 6,000
men on May 29, 3,000 men on May 30, and
another 3,000 on May 31. However, the Royal
Navy did not have enough ships in the area to
meet these figures, so men were left behind.
Though Crete had fallen to the Germans, even General Kurt Student admitted
that Crete had been “the graveyard of the
German paratroopers.” British and Commonwealth troops had fought ferociously
on the island and the casualty figures for
the Germans were high. Of the 22,000 men
involved in the German assault, more than
7,000 men were lost. Such an attrition rate
was unacceptable to Hitler. After Operation Merkur, he ordered all future attacks
involving German paratroopers be part of an
infantry attack.

Η συμμετοχή χιλιάδων αμάχων στις
επιχειρήσεις ήταν ένας παράγοντας
που δεν είχαν υπολογίσει οι γερμανοί
σχεδιαστές της επιχείρησης. Πίστευαν
ότι οι Κρητικοί, γνωστοί για τα
αντιμοναρχικά τους αισθήματα,
θα υποδέχονταν τους Γερμανούς
ως ελευθερωτές. Μία ακόμη
λανθασμένη εκτίμηση της γερμανικής
αντικατασκοπείας υπό τον ναύαρχο
Βίλχελμ φον Κανάρις ήταν ο αριθμός
των μαχητών στην Κρήτη, τους οποίους
υπολόγιζαν σε μόνο 5.000 άνδρες.
Στις 4 το απόγευμα της 20ης Μαΐου
ένα νέο κύμα αλεξιπτωτιστών έπεσε
στο Ρέθυμνο και μία ώρα αργότερα στο
Ηράκλειο. Τώρα, οι μάχες διεξάγονταν
σε τέσσερα μέτωπα: Χανιά, Μάλεμε,
Ρέθυμνο και Ηράκλειο. Η πρώτη
μέρα της Μάχης της Κρήτης έληξε με
μεγάλες απώλειες για τους Γερμανούς
και αβέβαια έκβαση. Ο διοικητής των
γερμανικών δυνάμεων, πτέραρχος
Κουρτ Στούτεντ, απογοητευμένος
από την εξέλιξη των επιχειρήσεων,
σκέφθηκε ακόμη και την αυτοκτονία,
αναλογιζόμενος την υπόσχεση που
είχε δώσει στον Φύρερ για μια εύκολη
νίκη. Το βράδυ της ίδιας μέρας, μετά
από μεγάλες περιπέτειες, ο βασιλιάς
Γεώργιος Β’ και η εξόριστη ελληνική
κυβέρνηση μεταφέρθηκαν με βρετανικό
πολεμικό στην Αίγυπτο.
Από τα ξημερώματα της 21ης
Μαΐου οι μάχες συνεχίσθηκαν με
ιδιαίτερη σφοδρότητα και στα τέσσερα
μέτωπα. Οι Γερμανοί επικεντρώθηκαν
στην κατάληψη του αεροδρομίου του
Μάλεμε, όπως ήταν ο πρωταρχικός
τους στόχος και τα κατάφεραν προς
το τέλος της ημέρας. Επωφελήθηκαν
από την ασυνεννοησία στις τάξεις
των Συμμάχων, αλλά υπέστησαν και
πάλι μεγάλες απώλειες. Ανάμεσα
στους γερμανούς αλεξιπτωτιστές που
κατέλαβαν το Μάλεμε ήταν μια μεγάλη
προσωπικότητα του αθλητισμού και
της πυγμαχίας, ο πρώην παγκόσμιος
πρωταθλητής βαρέων βαρών Μαξ
Σμέλινγκ, 36 ετών, που έφερε το βαθμό
του δεκανέα.
Η κατάληψη του αεροδρομίου
ήταν στρατηγικής σημασίας για
την εξέλιξη των επιχειρήσεων. Οι
Γερμανοί άρχισαν να μεταφέρουν
μεγάλες δυνάμεις από την Ελλάδα
και με τον σύγχρονο οπλισμό που
διέθεταν ήταν θέμα χρόνου η
κυριαρχία τους στη Μεγαλόνησο.
Στις 28 Μαΐου οι Γερμανοί είχαν
απωθήσει τις συμμαχικές δυνάμεις
προς τα νότια, καθιστώντας τον
αγώνα τους μάταιο. Έτσι, το Λονδίνο
αποφάσισε την απόσυρση των
δυνάμεων της Κοινοπολιτείας από
την Κρήτη και τη μεταφορά τους
στην Αίγυπτο. Όσες μονάδες δεν τα
κατάφεραν, παραδόθηκαν στους
Γερμανούς. Πολλοί Έλληνες μαχητές
και μαζί τους 500 Βρετανοί ανέβηκαν
στα απρόσιτα βουνά της Κρήτης για
να συνεχίσουν τον αγώνα. Την 1η
Ιουνίου, με την παράδοση 5.000
μαχητών στα Σφακιά, έπεσε η αυλαία
της Μάχης της Κρήτης.
Οι απώλειες για τους Συμμάχους
ήταν: 3.500 νεκροί, 1.900 τραυματίες
και 17.500 αιχμάλωτοι. Οι Γερμανοί,
σύμφωνα με δικά τους στοιχεία, είχαν
3.986 νεκρούς και αγνοούμενους, 2.594
τραυματίες, ενώ έχασαν 370 αεροπλάνα.
Σύμφωνα, όμως, με συμμαχικούς
υπολογισμούς, οι γερμανικές απώλειες
ξεπέρασαν τις 16.000.
Η Μάχη στην Κρήτη ονομάστηκε
και «Νεκροταφείο των γερμανών
αλεξιπτωτιστών», εξαιτίας των
μεγάλων απωλειών τους, γεγονός
που ανάγκασε τον Χίτλερ να διατάξει
τον τερματισμό κάθε αεροπορικής
απόβασης στο μέλλον. Από την πλευρά
τους, οι Σύμμαχοι εντυπωσιάστηκαν
από τις μεγάλες δυνατότητες
των αλεξιπτωτιστών στη μάχη
και δημιούργησαν τις δικές τους
αεροπορικές δυνάμεις.

An enduring mystery

More than 300 complete vessels
were recovered from the late Minoan
residence at Agia Aikaterini.
Seldom elsewhere in Greece are
the diverse layers of history that have
accumulated in this ancient land more
apparent today - or more frustrating for
archaeologists - than they are in and
around the Old City of Chania, in northwestern Crete.
Inhabited since at least the late
Neolithic period some 5,000 years ago,
Chania - ancient Kydonia - was one of
the five main Minoan centers of Crete in
the Late Bronze Age during the second
half of the 2nd millennium BC.
As such, it almost certainly once had
a sprawling, multi-roomed palace like
the distinctive complexes still to be seen
at Knossos, Phaistos, Malia and Zakros.
Kydonia’s Minoan palace, however,
constitutes one of Greek archaeology’s
great remaining mysteries, still lying
buried and awaiting identification somewhere beneath the material buildup
of the strategic port city’s subsequent
Geometric, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman,
Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman Turkish occupation.
The focus of life on the site during
all of these successive eras was Chania’s
Kastelli Hill, where, since the mid-1960s,
Greek, Swedish and recently Danish
archaeologists have toiled to piece
together clues from mostly small excavations - conducted wherever possible in
the midst of an age-old urban landscape
also capped by modern development.
Despite archaeologists’ essentially

having to glimpse Chania’s rich past
only through a series of small key holes
cut in the ground, investigations are
heating up, especially at Agia Ekaterini
Square, where, since 1990, several tablets bearing Linear B script have been
unearthed. With excavations ongoing
in 2012, improved public presentation
of the visible Minoan remains at the
square and a new, large, ultra-modern
archaeological museum being planned,
Chania is clearly one place to keep an
eye on in coming years.
The systematic exploration of Minoan Kydonia was launched in 1965 by
Greek archaeologist Yiannis Tzedakis.
Later, between 1969 and 2008, Tzedakis
collaborated with Swedish archaeologists, under the auspices of the 25th
Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical
Antiquities (EPKA) and the Swedish
Institute at Athens (SIA), to investigate
prehistoric structures uncovered in Agia
Ekaterini Square.
Since the 1960s, the 25th EPKA has
also conducted innumerable rescue
excavations in small areas or sites within
Chania where modern development
has dipped into underlying strata and
revealed evidence of past habitation.
Beginning in 2010, the Danish Institute
at Athens (DIA) also became involved
in the study of the square, with excavations led by Tzedakis, Ann-Louise Schallin
(SIA) and Erik Hallager (DIA).
The 25th EPKA’s rescue operations,
overseen by the ephorate’s current
director, Maria Andreadaki-Vlasiki, have
brought to light important archaeo-
logical traces from different eras that
include impressive rock-cut chamber
tombs of the Hellenistic era. One particularly remarkable example of a late
4th or early 3rd century BC family tomb,
unearthed in 1981 but still accessible to
the public beneath a modern building,
features a long entrance corridor and
nine separate burial chambers with the
names of the deceased inscribed above
each door.
The Greek-Swedish excavations have
shown that Kastelli Hill was continuously
occupied from at least Early Minoan II/
Early Minoan III (EM II/EM III) times until
the present day, except for a 400-year
gap between the end of the Bronze Age
and the end of the Geometric period (ca
1150-725 BC). Previous Neolithic inhabitation is suggested through pottery, but
no architecture has been located yet.
The collaborative study also revealed
that the life of ancient Kydonia was
dynamic and subject to change. In the
Late Minoan era, unlike at other Minoan
centers in Crete, Kydonia experienced
a renewal of its settlement seven times
over a period of three and a half centuries. By the 14th and 13th centuries BC
(LM IIIA & LM IIIB) Kydonia had become
a busy commercial maritime center,
supported by an extensive agricultural
hinterland from which locally made
pottery, oil, perfume and wine were
exported throughout Crete, the Aegean
and to more distant central and eastern
Mediterranean areas ranging from Sardinia to Cyprus.
Fiery end
The fine display of walls to be seen at
Agia Ekaterini Square, covered today
with a protective modern roof, mostly
belong to the phase of Kydonia that
came to an abrupt, fiery end around
1450 BC (LM IB). Visible are several
domestic structures including House I,
which offers visitors a view of a Late Minoan residence. A doorway with a large
stone threshold leads into the house
from a narrow paved street. A small,
square hall then gives access in three
directions: straight ahead into a main
room with a light well, left into several
small rooms of unknown function and
right into a lobby with a staircase and
beyond it a kitchen/workroom which
held the remains of a loom. Adjacent to
the kitchen is a storeroom that contained jars of foodstuffs including peas.
Overall, more than 300 complete
vessels were recovered in the house. A

contained clay and stone vessels, seals,
sealings, amulets and jewelry. Upstairs,
a room above the kitchen once held
Linear A tablets, which, with the burning of the house, collapsed into the
room below. Short flights of low steps
connect some of the rooms, while light,
air and temperature could be controlled inside the house through typical
pier-and-door openings like those also
known at Knossos.
North of House I was discovered a
large, later structure that also burned
around 1350-1250 BC (LM IIIA:2/IIIB:1)
and contained at least three Linear B
tablets. One tablet reveals the presence
of a local cult of Zeus and Dionysus; a
second refers to weavers from western
Crete; while a third records 10 chariot
wheels - which seem, based on another
tablet from Knossos, to have been common Kydonian trade items.
The unresolved question about the
location of Kydonia’s Minoan palace
led to renewed excavations in 2010 by
an expanded Greek-Swedish-Danish
team. Focusing on the northern structure where Linear B tablets had previously been found, the archaeologists
produced a variety of intriguing Late
Bronze Age artifacts, but no new Linear
B inscriptions.
New museum
The results of further digging in 2011
have not been publicly disclosed yet.
With one more excavation season and
two study seasons left in the current
five-year project, new information
concerning Kydonia’s palace may still
be forthcoming. Certainly, the constellation of evidence that increasingly
points to the appropriateness of a
palace at Kydonia seems reassuring of
a positive eventual outcome for the
specialists’ search.
In the meantime, other exciting
developments are already taking place
in Chania, as the old archaeological
museum will soon be replaced with a
new, significantly larger facility that will
aptly showcase the remarkable archaeo-
logical finds from ancient Kydonia and
its surrounding areas. Although the
current archaeological museum has
charm, thanks largely to its accommodation within the vaulted main hall of a
Venetian monastery once dedicated to
St Francis, exhibition and working spaces
are severely limited.
The new museum, slated to open in
late 2013, is designed by Greek architect
Theofanis Bobotis, who also produced
the stunning, new archaeological museum in Patra.
Chania’s equally innovative facility
- to be erected in neighboring Chalepa,
near the historic home/museum of
former prime minister Eleftherios Venizelos - will feature 1,800 sqyare meters
of indoor and outdoor exhibition space,
skywalks, laboratories, offices, a 140seat amphitheater, a museum shop and
a restaurant. Stay tuned, as the future of
the past seems bright in western Crete.

Μετά τα εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα για σχολικές ομάδες, το Μουσείο
Καζαντζάκη προσφέρει στους μικρούς
του φίλους μια νέα δράση, την Παιδική
Λέσχη «Καλικαζαντζάκια».
Η Λέσχη απευθύνεται σε μικρά και
μεγάλα παιδιά, με σκοπό να τα ελκύσει
σε ομαδικές δράσεις στο μουσειακό
χώρο, αλλά και εκτός αυτού. Εκδρομές,
εργαστήρια, εκδηλώσεις διασκέδασης
και βιωματικής μάθησης και προγράμματα για όλη την οικογένεια, είναι
μερικές από τις δράσεις που θα συμπεριλάβει στο πρόγραμμά της η Λέσχη.
Η πρώτη δράση για τα «Καλικαζαντζάκια» θα είναι η Λέσχη Ανάγνωσης
για παιδιά 8-10 ετών, η οποία θα
λειτουργήσει με τη συνεργασία του
Δήμου Αρχανών-Αστερουσίων και των

George Tsontakis Receives
Lancaster Symphony Orchestra Composer Award

American composer and conductor George Tsontakis
received the 2012 Lancaster Symphony Orchestra Composer’s Award. He conducted the Lancaster Symphony
Orchestra in a performance of his own work, Lakonika,
in a concert in February.
Born in Astoria, New York, of Cretan heritage,
George Tsontakis studied with Roger Sessions at Juilliard and with Franco Donatoni in Rome. In 2005 he
was awarded the University of Louisville Grawemeyer
Award. In 2006 he was named the fourth recipient of
the Charles Ives Living by the American Academy of Arts
and Sciences.
The concert also included Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with Lancaster Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster
Netanel Draiblate as the soloist, the Toy Symphony by
Leopold Mozart and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8.

Dear fellow Cretans and friends:
The mission of this PAA project is to preserve in America our Hellenic Cretan identity for many generations to come and to expose
the general public to the natural beauty of Crete and its brilliant contributions to Western Civilization throughout the ages.
The present status of this PAA project is as follows:
1. We have a gift of 4.6 million euros or $6 million presented to us.
2. This gift can become ours by raising a matching $8.7 million to build a majestic facility adjacent to the University of Crete,
at Atsipopoulo, where the intended cultural cultivation will thrive for many generations.
Raising these matching funds can be done in several ways:
1. Philanthropic contributions can be made to the PAA Minoan Village, Inc. a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) entity, set up to foster this
project. To date we have received approximately $300,000 in donations.
2. Sale of use of the facility as time sharing of the planned suites; this makes it possible for entities and individuals to reserve a
particular week for their exclusive use every year in the future from 20 to 60 years. The chosen week will be the same
every year. To date we have commitments for 67 units or an amount of $604,000.
3. Sale of shares of the new corporation PAA Minoan Cultural Village, Inc. that will be setup in Greece. This option will be available to you later this year.
4. A construction loan from a bank.
Your participation in raising these funds is imperative!
This project gives the PAA its best chance for long-term survival and the financial ability to enhance its philanthropic, educational and cultural endeavors. This model can be sustained only by a large group such as the PAA and no single family, regardless
of wealth, can achieve a similar result. This project is about our people!
Personal contact and experiences are important to an individual’s development. Virtual reality, stories and hearsays do not go
very far in satisfying the needs of a person for an identity and potential for achievement. With this bridge to Crete, our children
and their grandchildren will learn and be proud of their roots and thus be better Americans. Our Cretan clubs will have unique
programs to offer to our youth and families and the PAA will be preserved for the ages.
The second benefit of this venture is the financial stability of the PAA. Two independent economic studies, done by reputable
consulting firms, show the venture to be viable and profitable. These studies are available to any interested investor upon request. As majority stockholder, the PAA will realize good profits which can be used in the Association’s philanthropic, educational
and cultural endeavors.
The project will give Crete a helping hand to work its way out of the financial difficulties of today. Presently, construction in
Crete is at a standstill and construction prices are down by as much as 30%. The land gift valued at approximately $1.5 million will
become ours forever and the grant of approximately $4.5 million will go a long way to defray construction costs.
Finally, this project presents you with the opportunity to do something good for your extended family and also have a sound
investment for your family. The payment terms and use of the facility are most flexible. The present pricing of timeshares is less
than half of market pricing of timeshares in Crete and you can make a good return, after the facility is built, if you need to sell.
To take advantage of the grant we must set up a corporation in Greece to build and manage the facility. Later this year stock
shares of this entity will be available for your purchase. As stockholder you will receive dividends and can also use the facility at
reduced rates based on the number of shares you own. In the future, if you sell your shares, you must give the PAA the first option
of refusal to purchase them.
All timeshare reservations made now will have the option of converting to stock ownership when that product becomes available sometime later this year.

ευυπόληπτες συμβουλευτικές εταιρείες, καταδεικνύουν ότι η επιχείρηση είναι βιώσιμη και κερδοφόρα. Αυτές οι μελέτες είναι διαθέσιμες
σε κάθε ενδιαφερόμενο επενδυτή κατόπιν αίτησης. Ως πλειοψηφικός μέτοχος, η Π.Ε.Α. θα εξασφαλίσει καλά κέρδη που μπορούν να

συνεισφέρει σημαντικά στην κάλυψη του κατασκευαστικού κόστους.
Τέλος, αυτό το έργο σας δίνει την ευκαιρία να κάνετε κάτι καλό για την ευρύτερη οικογένειά μας και να έχετε επίσης μια σταθερή επένδυση

Το όνειρό μου να κτίσω μία
Εκκλησία στήν Ανώπολη Σφακίων,
γίνεται πραγματικότητα.
Τό καλοκαίρι τού 2011,στην Ανώπολη
Σφακίων, στήν αυλή τού πατρικού
μου σπιτιού, κάθομαι μαζί με τον
Αρχιμανδρίτη Παίσιο Παπασηφάκη και
πίνουμε μια τσικουδιά, απολαμβάνοντας
συγχρόνως το καθαρό Σφακιανό αέρα.
Τότε άρχισα να τού εκφράζω την
επιθυμία μου ότι θέλω να κτίσω μιά
εκκλησία στό τόπο που γεννήθηκα.
Η απάντηση του ήταν “καλή σκέψη,
προχώρα μέ τήν ευλογία τού
Θεού.” Αργότερα, όταν πήγαμε στό
καφενείο τού χωριού για άλλη μιά
τσικουδιά, ο παπας ανακοίνωσε στους
παρευρισκόμενους τήν επιθυμία μου
ότι θέλω νά κτίσω μια εκκλησία στό
χωριό μου. Ολοι οι χωριανοί επαίνεσαν
την απόφασή μου καί όλοι μαζί
πρότειναν νά κτίσω τόν Αγιο Παύλο,
πού γιορτάζει στίς 29 Ιουνίου καί είναι
η εποχή πού έρχονται στο χχωριό για
διακοπές και αυτοί που διαμένουν στο
εξωτερικό.
Επικοινώνησα μέ την εξαδέλφη μου
Χρυσούλα Βελησάριο Μπαδογιάννη,
στον Καναδά καί την ενημέρωσα γιά τήν
απόφασή μου νά κτίσω εκκλησία στο
χωριό μας, στήν τοποθεσία Αλωνίστρα
τού Κηδά. Εκεί υπάρχει ένα αλώνι
όπου τα παλιά χρόνια αλώνευαν.
Χάρηκε πολύ για την απόφαση μου
καί συγκινημένη η εξαδέλφη μου
μού διηγήθηκε μία ιστορία από τήν
μητέρα της. Πριν από πολλά χρόνια ενώ
αλώνιζαν ξεκίνησε φωτιά στό αλώνι καί
μέ πολύ κόπο κατάφεραν να σβήσουν
τήν φωτιά. Ηταν 29 Ιουνίου καί από
τότε δέν ξαναδούλεψαν, αλλά εκείνη
τήν ημέρα έκαναν λειτουργία στό
σημείο της φωτιάς. Εγώ θυμάμαι την
μητέρα μου που πήγαινε καί άναβε το
καντήλι εκεί δίπλα σέ μία σπηλιά που

υπήρχε μία εικόνα. Πιστεύω ότι όλα τά
γεγονότα δείχνουν ότι πρέπει νά γίνει
αυτή ή εκκλησία.
Εχω τήν συνεργασία καί υποστήρηξη

Αμέσως ξεκίνησα τήν διοργάνωση
μιάς Κρητικής βραδιάς καί συγχρόνως
ετοίμασα
καί μία λαχειοφόρο αγορά με δώρα
από διάφορους φίλους, μέ σκοπό νά
συγκεντρώσω χρήματα καί νά ξεκινήσω
τήν ανοικοδόμηση τής εκκλησίας.
Η εκδήλωση έγινε, Σάββατο 17
Μαρτίου 2012, στό Κρητικό σπίτι τού
συλλόγου Ομονοια ΝΥ, μέ την αθρόα
συμμετοχή φίλων, από τήν Νew York, New
Jersey, Connecticut, Utah, Springfield MA.
Ο Χρήστος Φασαράκης στή λύρα,
ο Γιώργος Κοκωνάς καί Γρηγόρης
Μανουσέλης στά λαούτα καί o Σταμάτης
Μωραιτάκης μας διασκέδασαν μέ
Κρητική μουσική μέχρι τίς πρωινές ώρες.
Τά φαγητά ήταν παραδοσιακά Κρητικά
εδέσματα , προσφορές φίλων μου. Όλο
τό κρέας ήταν προσφορά από τόν καλό
φίλο Αντώνη Ξυνό που κατάγεται από
τήν Λήμνο καί που η σύζυγος του είναι
Κρητικιά.
Ο Αγιογράφος Γιώργος Φιλιππάκης
είχε δωρίσει μία εικόνα στήν
λαχειοφόρο αγορά και είχε αγωνία
για το ποιός θά είναι ό τυχερός που θα
κερδίσει την εικόνα.
Τυχερός τελικά ήταν ο δωρητής και η
εικόνα θα πάει στήν εκκλησία τού Αγίου
Παύλου.
Ευχαριστώ από καρδιάς όλους όσους
προσέφεραν προσωπική εργασία, τούς
δωρητές της λαχειοφόρου, όλους τους
δωρητές καί τους μουσικούς πού μας
διασκέδασαν αφιλοκερδώς. Είχαμε μιά
πολύ πετυχημένη εκδήλωση μέ πολύ κέφι
και κράτησε τό γλέντι μέχρι τις πρωινές
ώρες. Εύχομαι ο Άγιος Παύλος νά χαρίζει
υγεία καί καλή φώτιση σ’ αυτούς καί στίς
οικογένειές τους καί νά βρεθούμε όλοι
στά θυρανοίξια της εκκλησίας.
Ενα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ στον σύλλογο
Κρητών Νέας Υόρκης « Ομόνοια»,
που παραχώρησαν την αίθουσα
αφιλοκερδώς. Ο Αγιος Παύλος νά είναι
βοηθός και προστάτης σέ όλα τά μέλη
τού συλλόγου μας.

When George Horton, Consul General of the USA, wrote the book "Like Another
Helen" in 1901, it became an overnight best seller in America. In addition to the classic by now Blight of Asia, Horton wrote another 20 books mainly about Greece. Horton represented the United States as Consul General to Greece for almost 30 years,
from 1893-1924, and he was an eyewitness to the destruction of Smyrna by the Turks
on September 13, 1922. In 1907, he visited 47 American cities, lecturing in support of the discriminated Greek immigrants
(The Greeks of Today-1907). Nicholas Sakopoulos is linked to Like Another Helen in two ways: he was Consul General of
Greece at Chania form 1866-1868, and in 1909 Sakopoulos became the father-in-law of George Horton. The Academy of
Athens honored Sakopoulos by collecting all of his reports for the Foreign Ministry of Greece and published them in two
volumes.
The novel “Like Another Helen” is based on facts taken from the third Cretan revolution (1866-1869) against the Ottoman Turks as eyewitnessed and described by Sakopoulos himself. Upon reading this book, one is reminded of the classic
book by Nikos Kazantzakis, “Captain Michalis.” "Like Another Helen" is a must read for every Greek and especially for Cretans and for every serious researcher of the Cretan Revolutions. The translation into Greek and re-publication was sponsored by the non-profit Foundation Cultural Crete -USA.

Το 1901, ο Γεώργιος Χόρτων, Γενικός Πρόξενος των ΗΠΑ συνέγραψε το μυθιστόρημα «Όπως Μια Άλλη Ελένη» το
οποίο σχεδόν την επομένη της εκδόσεως του, έγινε μεγάλη επιτυχία σε πωλήσεις στη Αμερική. Μετά το «Η Μάστιγα της
Ασίας», ένα έργο-μαρτυρία πια για τον Ελληνισμό, ο Γ. Χόρτων συνέγραψε 20 αφηγήματα, κυρίως περί την Ελλάδα.
Ο Γ. Χόρτων εκπροσώπησε τις ΗΠΑ στην Ελλάδα ως Γενικός Πρόξενος περί τα τριάντα χρόνια (1893-1924).
Ενδιαμέσως υπηρέτησε στην Σμύρνη όπου υπήρξε αυτόπτης μάρτυρας της Καταστροφής της από τους Τούρκους, την 13η
Σεπτεμβρίου 1922. Το 1907, επισκέφθηκε 47 πόλεις ανά τις ΗΠΑ, όπου έδωσε Διαλέξεις προς υποστήριξη των Ελλήνων
μεταναστών οι οποίοι υφίσταντο διακρίσεις υπό των αλλογενών (οι Έλληνες του Σήμερα-1907).
Ο Νικόλαος Σακόπουλος συνδέεται με δύο τρόπους με το «Όπως Μια Άλλη Ελένη». Μεταξύ των ετών 1866-1868 (Γ’
Κρητική Επανάσταση) ήταν Πρόξενος της Ελλάδος στα Χανιά. Αργότερα δε, το 1909, πάντρεψε την κόρη του Αικατερίνη
με τον Γ. Χόρτων. Σημειωτέον ότι η Ακαδημία Αθηνών τίμησε τον Ν. Σακόπουλο με το να συλλέξει όλες τις αναφορές του
προς το Υπουργείο Εξωτερικών της Ελλάδος και να τις εκδώσει σε δύο τόμους.
Η πλοκή «Όπως Μια Άλλη Ελένη» εδράζεται σε γεγονότα της Γ’ Κρητικής Επανάστασης (1866-1869) ενάντια στους
κατακτητές Οθωμανούς Τούρκους. Καθώς κάποιος αναγιγνώσκει αυτή την εξιστόρηση, στην μνήμη του έρχεται το
γνωστό διεθνώς έργο του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη «Ο Καπετάν Μιχάλης». Το «Όπως Μια Άλλη Ελένη» πρέπει να αναγνωσθεί
από όλους τους Έλληνες, ιδιαιτέρως δε από τους Κρητικούς, καθώς επίσης και από κάθε ερευνητή των αλλεπαλλήλων
Κρητικών Επαναστάσεων.

As the city of Springfield, Mass.,
prepared for the world’s largest pancake breakfast, the Cretans of Springfield prepared to host the quarterly
meeting of the national board of the
PanCretan Association of America
in the “City of Homes.” The board’s
presence also provided a prime opportunity for the three clubs, MinosCrete, Cretan Ladies Society “Proodos,” and Minos-Crete Youth, to host
the District I Governor’s Ball.
Board members were welcomed
at the Sheraton Hotel on May 11,
2012 with a gift bag prepared by the
Ladies Proodos, including tsikoudia
donated by Minos-Crete member
George Marnelakis. The weekend
kicked off with a welcome night at
the syllogo, chaired by Costa Bouzakis and George Marnelakis. And
what an exciting night it was. Guests
were greeted with traditional kalitsounia prepared by Ladies Proodos
members Mary Kavrakis, Antigony
Liritzis and Sophia Sargentanis, and
crab-stuffed mushrooms prepared
by George Marnelakis. Welcoming
the board were Proodos President
Evangelia Papamarkakis and Minos22

Crete President Costa Bouzakis. Soon
after, a magnificent 16-foot buffet
was served, with all food donated
by George Marnelakis, including rabbit, roast beef, baked stuffed shrimp,
pastitsio, kalamari, salads and Greekstyle green beans. Elias Bouzakis, Eftihi
Marnelakis, Mihali Marnelakis and
Peter Kantos assisted with the food
preparations. John Kontekakis skillfully
stocked and managed the bar.
The evening continued with a performance by the Springfield Rizitika
group, which consists of long-time
members Costa Bouzakis, Stamati
Moraitakis, John Skoulides, Manoli
Ntagkounakis, George Marnelakis,
Elias Bouzakis, Peter Kantos, John
Kontekakis, Costa Dourountoudakis,
Eftihi Marnelakis, and new, younger
members Eftihi Marnelakis, Mihali
Marnelakis (three generations of
Marnelakises) and Costa Bouzakis.
An evening of music and dancing
followed with musicians from Crete,
Galatios Moshonas and Georgios
Psaroudakis, joined by Christos Semanderes.
The board meeting held at the
Sheraton on Saturday consisted of
reports from President John Manos,
executive board members, district
governors and committee chairs.
Resolutions passed are listed below.
Proodos provided Greek cookies and
coffee for the meeting. In honor of
Mothers’ Day, President Manos treated the board to lunch and surprised
all the women present with bouquets
of flowers.
Saturday evening guests arrived
at the newly renovated Syllogo to
find it transformed into a venue
worthy of the District I Governor’s
Ball. The highlight of the sold-out
event was the presentation of the
Minoan Award to former PAA President Stavros Semanderes by District
I Governor Demitri Hatzis with the
inscription “In grateful appreciation
of his philanthropy, generosity and
tireless commitment to Cretan heritage and Hellenic ideals.” Awarded
biennially since 1985, it is the highest distinction of District I of the PAA
and is awarded at the Governor’s Ball
to individuals or organizations who,
through dedication and commitment,
have offered outstanding and distinguished contributions to the society,
to the community and to the Cretan
people. Antonios Dogiakis sculpted
the Labrys, which adorns the plaque
constructed by George Geraniotis of
Ariston Engraving.
Former PAA President George
Chryssis served as master of ceremonies. Father Christopher Stamas of
St. George Cathedral in Springfield
delivered the invocation, followed
by greetings and reflections by
Governor Hatzis, Women’s Executive Director Maria Stratoudakis and
General Secretary Erasmia Novotny,
as President Manos served up the
keynote address. PAA President
Manos presented the host chapter
presidents, Evangelia Papamarkakis
and Costa Bouzakis, with an icon of
the Four Martyrs.
District I generously voted to give all
the proceeds from the Governor’s Ball
program book to the Crete Relief Fund.
More than $4,000 was raised from donations by PAA members and clubs.
The catered dinner proved to
be exceptional. Dancers from the
Rathamanthus-Ide and Megalonisos
Chapters of Boston dazzled guests
with performers of all ages, the
youngest just three years old.
The evening continued with
dancing and fellowship and an overwhelming number of young people.
After midnight, a selection of pastries prepared by Proodos ladies and
George Marnelakis was served. Once
again, George surprised all during the
wee hours with trays of locaniko and
tsikoudia. His famous late-night soup
arrived, as did dawn. It was a weekend to be remembered by all. Congratulations to Stavros Semanderes,
Governor Demitri Hatzis and all the
members of Minos-Crete, Proodos
and Minos-Crete Youth.
Resolutions Passed
At the May 12 national board meeting in Springfield, Mass., the following resolutions were passed:
• That the PAA Philanthropic Fund give $15,000 from the Crete Relief Fund to the IOCC for the
cost of transporting via a shipping container $250,000 to $350,000 worth of medical supplies to Crete.
• That the PAA pay for the one-time mailing of the World Council of Cretans (PSK) Magazine to the PAA members at
a cost of approximately $600.
• That the PAA explore the possibility of selling shares as investments in the Minoan Village Project.
• That the PAA agrees to enter into a 14-month contract the with Greek Circle Organization for publication of KPHTH
Magazine at $7,400 a month, contingent upon review by the legal advisor.

My name is Emmanuella or ‘Emmy’ Makridakis, and I am a member of the
Cretan Youth of Chicago. My family is originally from Chania, Crete. I am
finishing up my sophomore year at Northwestern University, majoring
in Biomedical Engineering. I also work in a research lab in the Materials
Science Department at Northwestern, studying biomaterials. My current
work involves a research project on the uses of soy protein scaffolds for
bone tissue engineering. I enjoy this type of work, since I am interested in
working toward making improvements in healthcare. I plan on continuing
to work while attending NU, and will become a Gateway Science Workshop Facilitator this coming year. I am also a member or Northwestern’s
Triathlon Club, and am part of the Chicago Cretan Dance Group. I love
Cretan dancing as well as attending Cretan events since it is the best way
to preserve and celebrate our wonderful culture.
Hello KPHTH Magazine! I’m Nectarios Karahalios from the Minotavros
Chapter in Salt Lake City, and I am proud to be Cretan! I truly believe that
my upbringing in such a strong community made me into who I am today.
I’m a recent graduate from the University of Utah, and a business owner.
My mother and I started Roula’s Cafe in 2005, and at the time I was still
a student studying Economics and Entrepreneurship. This multitasking
helped me take my negotiation, bargaining, cooking, hiring, and customer
service skills to a new level, and I embarked on opening my second business. With the help of some of my fellow Cretans, we started The Greek
Knights, an event planning company in Salt Lake City. If you haven’t been
to one of our parties, I personally invite you to attend the next one! The
Greek Knights has been an amazing learning experience from marketing
and event planning, to sponsorship and fundraising, but most importantly
for the people and memories we’ve made. I feel blessed to be part of such
a unique and cultured community. Thank you!

Το Ιστορικό της Επανάστασης
της 25ης Μαρτίου 1821

Είναι γνωστό και ιστορικώς
αποδεδειγμένο πως τα επαναστατικά
γεγονότα του 1821, ανακινήθηκαν με
την σύναξη του Αιγίου (Βοστίτσας) από
την 26η Ιανουαρίου έως και 30η του
ιδίου μηνός (παλαιό ημερολόγιο). Εκεί
από τον Παπαφλέσσα, οι πρόκριτοι και
οι ιερείς, άκουσαν ότι οι πιθανότερες
ημερομηνίες για την έναρξη της
επαναστάσεως ήταν, είτε η 25η
Μαρτίου, (ημέρα του Ευαγγελισμού),
είτε η 23η Απριλίου, (του αγίου
Γεωργίου) , είτε η 29η Μαΐου, (ημέρα
της αλώσεως της Πόλης), απ’ ότι όμως
απεδείχθη εκ των υστέρων τα γεγονότα
τους πρόλαβαν και η επανάσταση
ξεκίνησε νωρίτερα.
Έτσι λοιπόν στις 14 Μαρτίου 1821
χτυπήθηκαν οι Τούρκοι εισπράκτορες
στο Αγρίδι Κλουκινών Καλαβρύτων
από τον Νικόλαο Σολιώτη και την 16η
Μαρτίου1821 στην χελωνοσπηλιά
Λυκούριας Καλαβρύτων από τους
Χονδρογιανναίους, στην Φροξυλιά,
στο γεφύρι του Αμπήμπαγα και αλλού,
ενώ η κορύφωση των γεγονότων έγινε
με την απελευθέρωση της πόλεως των
Καλαβρύτων την 21η Μαρτίου 1821,
συνεχίστηκε με την μάχη των Πατρών
την 21η και 22α Μαρτίου 1821, καθώς
και την απελευθέρωση της Καλαμάτας
την 23η Μαρτίου 1821 από τον
Κολοκοτρώνη, τον Παπαφλέσσα και τους
Μανιάτες του Πετρόμπεη που κι’ αυτοί
είχαν ξεκινήσει με ορκωμοσία από την
Αρεόπολη στις 17 Μαρτίου 1821.
Επίσης την 16η Μαρτίου 1821,
στην θέση Χελωνοσπηλιά Λυκούριας
Καλαβρύτων, οι οπλαρχηγοί
Χοντρογιάννης, Λαμπρούλιας,
Ασημάκης, Γιάννης Ντόλκας και ο
Γ. Δημόπουλος με την συναίνεση
του γερό Ασημάκη Ζαΐμη, χτύπησαν
τον Λαλαίο Σεϊντή Σιπαχή και τον εκ
Βυτίνας Τραπεζίτη Ταμπακόπουλο,
το αυτό συνέβη και στην τοποθεσία

Σιπαχήδες από την Τρίπολη των οποίων
τα πτώματα είδε στην άκρη του δρόμου
και ο τότε μαθητής στο σχολαρχείο
Σοπωτού και μετέπειτα γραμματέας
του Πάνου Κολοκοτρώνη και δικηγόρος,
Θεοδ. Ρηγόπουλος, εκ Φιλίων.
Παράλληλα ο Νικόλαος Σολιώτης
κτύπησε και τους φοροεισπράκτορες
Τσιπογλαίους κοντά στα Αρφαρά,
ενώ στις 18 Μαρτίου πάλι ο Σολιώτης
κτύπησε 60 Τουρκαλβανούς στην
Βερσοβά Ανατ. Αιγιαλείας.
Στις 17 Μαρτίου, στο γεφύρι του
Αμπήμπαγα συνελήφθη ο Σελήμ
αγάς, κλειδούχος του Ναυπλίου
προερχόμενος από την Πάτρα. Τέλος
σκοτώθηκε και ο οθωμανός τοπάρχης
Φελλόης Μουλά Γιακούπ.
Εκ των ανωτέρω συνάγεται ότι
οι πρόκριτοι παρότι φαινομενικά
κατά την διάρκεια της συσκέψεως
εφαίνοντο διστακτικοί αναφορικά
με την έναρξη της επαναστάσεως,
στην ουσία την επιθυμούσαν το
συντομότερο δυνατόν και προς τούτο
είχαν ενημερώσει τα πρωτοπαλίκαρα
τους να αρχίσουν τις επαναστατικές
κινήσεις, πράγμα που έγινε.
Κατόπιν των ανωτέρω τετελεσμένων
γεγονότων και δεδομένου του ότι οι
λοιπές «κεφαλές» της Πελοποννήσου
βρίσκονταν είτε εγκλωβισμένες, είτε
υπό στενή παρακολούθηση, το βράδυ
της 16ης Μαρτίου ξημερώματα της
17ης, εορτής του Αγίου Αλεξίου ο
οποίος εορτάζεται στην Αγία Λαύρα
ως προστάτης άγιος (εκεί ευρίσκεται
η Κάρα του κατόπιν δωρεάς του
Εμμανουήλ Παλαιολόγου το 1414)
και στου οποίου τη «χάρη», –όπως
κάθε χρόνο αφού πρόκειται περί
τοπικής θρησκευτικής πανηγύρεως— ,
θα συνέρεε πλήθος Καλαβρυτινών
απ’ όλη την επαρχία, ο Ασημάκης
Φωτήλας κατά την διάρκεια της
τρίτης συσκέψεως των προκρίτων,
εξανιστάμενος, φανέρωσε τις αληθινές
του προθέσεις λέγοντας ότι έπρεπε να
επαναστατήσουν πάραυτα.
Την άποψη πώς η επανάσταση
έπρεπε ν’ αρχίσει άμεσα, δηλαδή στις
17 Μαρτίου 1821 (παλαιό ημερολόγιο),
ενίσχυσε το γεγονός ότι ήδη λόγω
της εορτής του Αγίου Αλεξίου – ως
προελέχθη – θα συνέρεαν στην Μονή
Αγ. Λαύρας όλοι οι τοπικοί οπλαρχηγοί,
καθώς και πλήθος κόσμου η δε σύναξη
αυτή δεν θα προβλημάτιζε τους
Τούρκους εφόσον θα ήταν στα πλαίσια
της ετήσιας θρησκευτικής πανηγύρεως,
θα βοηθούσε όμως τους Έλληνες
ούτως ώστε να συνεδριάσουν όλοι μαζί
κάτω από την «μύτη» των Οθωμανών
και να πάρουν άμεσες συλλογικές
αποφάσεις για την έναρξη του αγώνα
στην Πελοπόννησο, τον οποίο όλοι
περίμεναν από στιγμή σε στιγμή.
Επίσης ένα άλλο γεγονός το οποίο
τελικώς βάρυνε στην απόφαση της
ενάρξεως του αγώνα παρά τις όποιες
επιπτώσεις, ήταν η γνώση του Ζαΐμη
περί της αποφάσεως των Κανέλλου
Δεληγιάννη, Σπηλιωτόπουλου και
Παπαφλέσσα ότι δεν θα έπρεπε να
αναβληθεί το κίνημα έστω και εάν
έπεφταν τα κεφάλια των προεστών και
δεσποτάδων στην Τρίπολη ( Σπ. Μελάς
«O Γέρος του Μωριά» σελ. 254 ).
Την 17η Μαρτίου 1821 ημέρα του
Αγίου Αλεξίου κατόπιν της λειτουργίας,
και της θρυλούμενης ορκωμοσίας,
άρχισαν να δίνονται από τους
προκρίτους οι στρατιωτικές εντολές
προς τα πρωτοπαλίκαρά τους οι οποίες
ολοκληρώθηκαν την 18η Μαρτίου
1821, ημερομηνία κατά την οποία
αυτοί αναχώρησαν για τις θέσεις τους
σε όλη την επαρχία Καλαβρύτων (ο
Παναγ. Φωτήλας για Αροανία, Πάος,
Ψωφίδα ), την Πάτρα (ο Π.Πατρών
αναχώρησε μαζί με τους Ανδρέα Ζαΐμη
και Προκόπιο για τα Νεζερά Πατρών
και έτσι βρέθηκαν στην Πάτρα την
21η Μαρτίου1821), το Αίγιο (ο Ανδρ.
Λόvτoς ) και άλλα μέρη.
Kατά την παραπάνω δε ημερομηνία
αναχώρησαν και οι αγγελιοφόροι του
μηνύματος της αποφάσεως για την
έναρξη της επαναστάσεως, ειδικά δε
προς την Καλαμάτα όπου ανέμεναν οι
Μαυρομιχαλαίοι με τον Κολοκοτρώνη,
έχοντας συμπτωματικά ξεκινήσει
και αυτοί από την Αρεόπολη στις 17
Μαρτίου 1821.
Η 19η Μαρτίου 1821 κύλησε όπως
και η 18η , δηλαδή με αναχωρήσεις και
οργανώσεις των Ελλήνων, η δε Τουρκική
φρουρά των Καλαβρύτων με τον
αρβανίτικης καταγωγής μουσουλμάνο
μπεκτασί διοικητή της Αρναούτογλου
«ταμπουρώθηκε» εντός της πόλεως
των Καλαβρύτων διότι αντελήφθησαν
πως δεν επρόκειτο περί πανηγύρεως,
αλλά για οργανωμένη στρατωτική/
επαναστατική κίνηση των Ελλήνων.
Την 20η Μαρτίου 1821 οι
εναπομείναντες στην Αγία Λαύρα
πολεμιστές, αφού πήραν ένα μικρό
κανονάκι της μονής και αντί για σημαία
(μπαϊράκι), το κάλυμμα της ωραίας
πύλης της εκκλησούλας του Αγ. Αλεξίου,
(το γνωστό λάβαρο, δώρο στην μονή
των γυναικών της Σμύρνης της Μ. Ασίας)
, με σημαιοφόρο τον Αγιολαυρίτη
ιεροδιάκονο Γρηγόριο Ντόκο « ……
κατήλθαν στον πέριξ των Καλαβρύτων
χώρο…..» και τα ξημερώματα της 21ης
Μαρτίου 1821 άρχισαν τις εχθροπραξίες
με την φρουρά της πόλεως την οποία
κατέβαλαν αυθημερόν μετά από
μάχη και όχι απλούς εορταστικούς
«πυροβολισμούς», όπως εσφαλμένως
αναγράφουν μερικοί σύγχρονοι
ιστορικοί, ελευθερώνοντας έτσι την πόλη
των Καλαβρύτων, η οποία ήταν εύρωστη
και πολύ σημαντική για την διοίκηση
των Τούρκων στην Βόρεια Πελοπόννησο.
Σημειωτέον δε ότι κατά το έτος 1816
κατέβαλε ετήσιο χαράτσι δεκαπλάσιο
του Πύργου Ηλείας, διπλάσιο του Αιγίου,
τριπλάσιο των Πατρών και σχεδόν
διπλάσιο της Γαστούνης.
Εν κατακλείδι και σύμφωνα
με τα όσα εκθέσαμε ως τώρα, με
σαφήνεια προκύπτει πώς πριν την 17η
Μαρτίου 1821 απεφασίσθη υπό των
Καλαβρυτινών προκρίτων το τόλμημα
της ενάρξεως του αγώνα στην
Πελοπόννησο.
Την 17η Μαρτίου 1821 έγινε στην
Αγία Λαύρα αυτό που ονομάζουμε
ορκωμοσία, ενώ ακολούθησε
λειτουργία στην μνήμη του Αγ. Αλεξίου,
παρότι δε ο Παλαιών Πατρών Γερμανός
δεν αναφέρεται ρητά σε τέτοιο
περιστατικό στα απομνημονεύματά
του, εν τούτοις το γεγονός διασώζεται
στις οικογενειακές προφορικές
παραδόσεις των Καλαβρυτινών, στα
δημοτικά τους τραγούδια, καθώς
και εγγράφως στα πιστοποιητικά
των Καλαβρυτινών αγωνιστών που
βρίσκονται αρχειοθετημένα στο αρχείο
αγωνιστών στην Εθνική Βιβλιοθήκη.
Την ίδια ημέρα πρέπει να έγινε και η
κατάστρωση του πολεμικού σχεδίου
και επομένως τα περί Αγ. Λαύρας,
μπορεί να μην έγιναν ακριβώς όπως
αποτυπώθηκαν στους ζωγραφικούς
πίνακες, ή τα κατέγραψε η λαϊκή
μούσα, πλην όμως δεν είναι μύθος
απλά έγιναν μία εβδομάδα νωρίτερα
της 25ης Μαρτίου 1821. Στην συνέχεια,
την 19η Μαρτίου 1821 διεμηνύθη η
έναρξη του αγώνα στην Καλαμάτα.
Την 21η Μαρτίου 1821, έγινε
η επίθεση κατά των Καλαβρύτων,
η κατάληψη και η απελευθέρωσή
τους μετά από μάχη, καθώς και η
αιχμαλωσία της φρουράς και του
Διοικητού της Αρναούτογλου (9
ιστορικοί συμφωνούν σε αυτό ).
Επίσης την 21η Μαρτίου 1821, από
το Ρίο πραγματοποιήθηκε είσοδος στην
Πάτρα 100 Τούρκων υπό τον Γιουσούφ
– Σελήμ για να περιορίσουν τους
επαναστατημένους Έλληνες. Άρχισαν
οι εχθροπραξίες στο Αίγιο και την Αγία
Τριάδα Πατρών, ενώ έγινε επίθεση
κατά της οικίας Παπαδιαμαντοπούλου,
με αντεπίθεση των Ελλήνων, η
συμπλοκή στο Τάσι και ο φόνος του
επτανησίου Β. Ορκουλάτου.
Την 22α Μαρτίου 1821
κηρύχθηκε η επανάσταση των
Πατρών, έγινε η είσοδος στην πόλη
του Παπαδιαμαντόπουλου με τους
Κουμανιωταίους και τον Ανδρέα Λόντο
μετά 300 ανδρών υπό ερυθρές σημαίας
με μέλανα σταυρό. Ομοίως έγινε και
η είσοδος του Π.Πατρών Γερμανού,
του Προκοπίου, των Αν, Ζαΐμη και Βεν.
Ρούφου στην πλατεία Αγ. Γεωργίου,
όπου υψώθηκε η σημαία του Α. Λόντου,
Αφιέρωμα:.
Στις 23 και 24 Μαρτίου 1821 έγινε
η σύσταση του Αχαϊκού Διευθυντηρίου
στην Πάτρα, στην δε Καλαμάτα
πραγματοποιήθηκε είσοδος των
Ελληνικών σωμάτων με Κολοκοτρώνη,
Παπαφλέσσα και Μαυρομιχαλαίους
που είχαν ξεκινήσει από την Αρεόπολη
της Μάνης συμπτωματικά και
αυτοί στις 17 Μαρτίου 1821 όπως
προαναφέρθηκε. Τότε συνεστήθη και η
Μεσσηνιακή Γερουσία,
Στις 24 και 26 Μαρτίου 1821,
αντιστοίχως κοινοποιήθηκε στα
Προξενεία των χριστιανικών Ευρωπαϊκών
δυνάμεων που βρίσκονταν στην
Καλαμάτα και την Πάτρα η προκήρυξη
(declaratίon) της επαναστάσεως, με
περισσότερο σημαντική αυτή που
κοινοποιήθηκε στον Πρόξενο της
Αγγλίας Green ( Γκρήν) , όπου ξεκάθαρα
αποσαφηνίζεται ο Εθνικός χαρακτήρας
της επανάστασης ( self determination
αυτοδιάθεση ). Τέλος μία εξ αυτών των
διακηρύξεων εδημοσιεύθη και στην
Γαλλική εφημερίδα Le Costitutionnel την
6η Ιουνίου 1821, οπότε η εθνεγερσία
έλαβε και διεθνή πολιτικό χαρακτήρα.
Αυτή λοιπόν η ημερομηνία της 25ης
Μαρτίου (ημέρα θρησκευτική λόγω του
Ευαγγελισμού της Θεοτόκου, αλλά και
συμβολική που συγκεντρώνει όλα τα
προγενέστερα αυτής περιστατικά) , με
την σύμφωνη γνώμη των αγωνιστών
και πρωταγωνιστών της επανάστασης,
το 1838 έγινε Βασιλικό διάταγμα του
Όθωνα και καθιερώθηκε ως εθνική
επέτειος ( σημ.: ως εθνική γιορτή
καθιερώθηκε μόλις στα τέλη του 19ου
αιώνα, με βασιλικό διάταγμα του
Γεωργίου Α’ ) μένοντας έτσι ως ορόσημο
της Ελληνικής πανεθνικής παλιγγενεσίας.
Ομοίως με την σύμφωνη γνώμη
των αγωνιστών, οι Καλαβρυτινοί και
η πόλη τους, λόγω του ρόλου της Αγ.
Λαύρας ως σημείου επαναστατικών
συνελεύσεων, αναγνωρίστηκαν ως
οι πρώτοι μεταξύ ίσων, αφού ουδείς
υποβάθμισε τον ρόλο και την σημασία
των λοιπών Ελλήνων, Μανιατών,
Υδραίων, Σπετσιωτών, Ψαρριανών,
Ρουμελιωτών, Σουλιωτών κλπ.
Ας μείνουμε λοιπόν πιστοί σ’ αυτό
που οι πρωταγωνιστές του αγώνα
συναποφάσισαν και μην δημιουργούμε
ανούσιες συγχύσεις. Τέλος ας δούμε
την ουσία χωρίς να υποβαθμίζουμε
την πανελλήνια σημασία του αγώνα σε
μόνον τοπικής σημασίας γεγονός.

Στης 26 Φεβρουαριου ειχαμε μια μακαροναδα για να
βοηθησουμε τα αυτιστικα παιδια; St. Nicholas Foundation και
το Θεραπευτηριο Χρονιων Παθησεων Χανιων. Ειχαμε μεγαλη
συμμετοχη και επιτυχια.
Επισης στις 25 Μαρτιου ολοι μαζι παραβρεθηκαμε στην
5η Λεωφορο για την Εθνικη μας παρελαση. Στις 27 Μαρτιου,
η Πασιφαη επισκεφθηκε το Ronald McDonald House. Στις 31
Μαρτιου, ο Συλλογος μας διοργανωσε μια εκδρομη στο Taj Mahal,
Atlantic City για την εκθεση του Hermes Expo.
Στις 19 Φεβρουαριου γεννηθηκε ενα
πανεμορφο αγορακη Steven Matthew, γιος
της Marias και Lenny Mihailov. Ειναι το δευτερο
εγγονακη της πρωην προεδρου της Πασιφαης,
Κ. Μαρινα Πεφανη και του συζυγου της Σταυρου
Πεφανη, και της γιαγιας Doina. Ευχομεθα να τους
ζηση και να το καμαρωσουν και γαμπρουλη.
Επισης, συγχαρητηρια
στην πρωην προεδρο της Πασιφαης, Κ. Τουλα
Μπογδανου, γενος Κακατσακη και συζυγου
Παναγιωτη,ως επισης στον Παναγιωτη και

Parade
On Sunday, March 25, our chapter participated in the Greek
Independence Day Parade in Tarpon Springs, Florida. This year, a
huge group of adult and youth members as well as many of our
youth dancers participated in the march. We were lucky to have
a new Toyota truck and a trailer donated to the Silogo, which we
decorated, and had a place to sit for those who could not walk
the entire day. Many members gathered on Saturday and Sunday
before the parade to come up with creative ways to turn the trailer

beautiful “float” for the celebration. The float was made with “recycled” convention decorations and some large KPHTH maps. We
used moss from trees, tablecloths, grapevines, old wine barrels
and some wool blankets. We managed to have the most creative,
fun and only “free” float in the parade. It was a perfect Florida
day; everyone got some sun. The dance group performed for all
the dignitaries while the board members gave Kefalograviera, nuts
and, of course, Raki, to the mayor, proxeno and other VIPs. Bravo
to the youth for a great turnout and superb performance.

Παρέλαση 25ης Μαρτίου
Τη Κυριακή της 25ης Μαρτίου, του 2012, το Ντάουν Τάουν
Ντιτρόϊτ θύμισε και πάλι Ελλάδα. Η ελληνική κοινότητα του
Μἰσιγκαν μαζεύτηκε στην οδό Μονρόε για να απολαύσει μία
από τις σημαντικότερες εκδηλώσεις του Ελληνισμού. Από
τους παρελάζοντες, οι συλλόγοι «Ψηλορείτης», «Κρήτη» και
«Λεβεντογέννα» ξεχώρισαν για μία ακόμη φορά με την παρουσία
τους. Πρωτού ξεκινήσει η παρέλαση, εκδηλώθηκαν χοροί από

On Sunday, March 25, 2012, Downtown Detroit reminded us of
Greece. The Greek community of Michigan gathered on Monroe
Street to celebrate one of the most important events of Hellenism.
Marching were our three chapters, “Pseloretes,” “Crete” and the
“Leventoyenna” youth, who stood out as they always have in the
past. During the opening ceremony, a series of traditional dances
were performed by the representative dance groups of Greek
Fraternities and Orthodox Churches. Our “Leventoyenna” dance
group presented yet again an outstanding performance. Congratulations to all who participated!

Εορτασμός της Λαμπρής στο Γκρος Πόιντ Ουίντμιλ Παρκ του
Μίσιγκαν.
Υπεύθυνοι διοργανωτές για την επίτευξη αυτού του ευχάριστου

Congratulations to the family of Lynsly and Nicholas Houstoulakis on the baptism of their little Nicoletta Houstoulakis. The baptism was held on December 30, 2011, at the Assumption Greek
Orthodox Church of Saint Claire Shores. The proud grandparents
of Nicoletta are Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Mcdermott, as well as Mr.
and Mrs. Ioannis and Katerina Houstoulakis, while the honored
godmother who baptized little Nicoletta was Manolitsa Nikolakakis
Dionissopoulos. A reception followed where relatives and friends

Memorial
The Cretans of Connecticut,
Eleftherios Venizelos Chapter, held a
memorial to Eleftherios Venizelos on
Sunday, March 18, 2012, at St. George
Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Hartford,
Connecticut. Reverend Fathers George
Zugravu and Thomas Cokotis officiated. We distributed literature to the
Hartford church community describing
the significant accomplishments of this
Greek national hero, described as the “Father of the Greek Republic,” and one of the greatest statesmen of Europe.
Afterward our chapter gathered for a luncheon at Elaine’s restaurant in nearby Wethersfield to socialize with our fellow Cretans.
We were most honored to have with us our district governor,
Demitris Hatzis, as well as our board members, Andonis Aretakis,
president, Rose Bonatsakis Vouthounes, vice president, Libby
Artas (Aretakis) Sideriadis, treasurer, and Christina (Tina) Meggie
(Megalonakis) Smith, secretary. We also held a raffle. The proceeds
will assist in the Greek financial relief effort. It was a wonderful
opportunity to reconnect with our Cretan friends.
Condolences
It is with deep sadness that we note the passing of Alice
Aretakis, mother of E. Venizelos Chapter, Cretans of Connecticut
Chapter president, Anthony Aretakis.
Alice (Katsanevakis) Aretakis passed away on April 23, 2012. She
was born in New York City in 1924. In 1947 she married her beloved husband Michael who predeceased her in 1996. She was the
loving mother to son Anthony M. Aretakis of Mystic, Connecticut,
and daughter Anna Possas, and mother-in-law to George Possas of
Hicksville, New York. She was the beloved grandmother of four,
Diana (Aretakis) Trovato and husband Giovanni, Alison Faye Johnson, Constantine Possas and Michael Aretakis, and great grandmother to Alexander Johnson.
Alice leaves behind three sisters, Chris Ginos of San Diego, Ann
Katopis of Clearwater, Florida, Cathy Segallis of Clearwater, Florida,
and brother Mike Katsus of San Rafael, California. At one point, all
five siblings lived at “The Top of the World” in Clearwater.
Alice was a resident of Brooklyn, New York, until she and her

Lula (Kaloroumakis) Kamages celebrated her 91st birthday on February 22,
with a dinner party hosted by her family.
Lula was born in Chicopee, Massachusetts, in 1921 and is the daughter of

Under the direction and inspiration of President Tony Kosmas
and co-chair Stacey Weeks, Polirinia held its sixth annual Cretan
Stacey Weeks, Ann Gigounas, Vasilis Fourakis, Tony Kosmas
Crab Feed fundraising dinner on January 21, in Novato, California. Attendees enjoyed a delicious meal, a lively performance by
the Minoan Dancers and dancing after dinner. Four Polirinia college students were awarded $500 scholarships: Andreas Fourakis,
Achilleas Fourakis, Nick Papadakis and Dino Papadakis.

A week before the FDF, the Minoans hosted a Cretan Glendi, offering
a delicious lamb shank with youvetsi dinner and a preview of the
Minoans’ FDF performances. Playing for the glendi and accompanying
the Minoans for their Cretan and Naxos sets were Mixalis Loufardakis
(violin), Stelios Lainakis (laouto) and Leonidas Lainakis (laouto) from
Crete. At the glendi, Ted Laliotis, president of the San Francisco Bay
Area’s United Hellenic American Societies, presented the Minoan Dancers with The Hellenic Cultural Achievement Award “for their tremendous contribution to Hellenism and Hellenic Culture by their authentic
folk dancing for at least three decades in the San Francisco Bay area.”
At the FDF, the adult Minoans, wearing the costumes of Sfakia and
Anogeia, performed dances from Kisamos and Rethymno. The
junior high/high school group performed dances from Crete and
Naxos, and the youngest group performed dances from Thrace.
All of the Minoans’ costumes are handmade by Polirinia member
Loula Fourakis.
More than 100 dance and choral groups attended the FDF,
mostly from California, but also from Washington, Oregon,
Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii. Dancers and musicians of all ages

Kalliopy Skoundridakis- Recently our chapter lost one of its dedicated members and supporters of
the Cretan culture. Popi fell asleep
in the Lord on February 11 after a
year-long battle with cancer. A loving and humble woman, Popi gave
of herself selflessly to her family,
her faith, the Cretan Association
and to everyone she encountered. As a member of the CretanAmerican Association of Miami,
Popi was an active participant in
her chapter for over 35 years. She
would often be seen in the kitchen,
whether it was making pastitsio and
vasilopita for the January luncheons,
or assisting with the vrasto that was served at our annual dance. She
touched the lives of many people and everyone will miss her deeply. Popi is survived by her husband Zaharis; daughter Katerina; sons Peter
and John Loupasakis, daughter-in-law Pauline and grandchildren: Peter,
Niko, and Eleni; son Basilios (Bill) Skoundridakis, one of our former presidents, daughter-in-law Katherine and grandsons Zachary and Christos. Befitting our Popi, her funeral services were held on Valentine’s Day,
and she was laid to rest at Vlahernon Greek Orthodox Monastery in
Williston, Florida. May her memory be eternal.

On Saturday March 24, our dance groups showcased Cretan dancing to the music of the Semanderes brothers, Nicholas and Christos,
at Wheeling Jesuit University. Each year the school has a nationality
festival representing a variety of
countries. There is food and entertainment from around the globe.

with the University over 14 years
ago. Every year since, our youth
are invited to perform. The ArkadiMaleme chapter showcases Cretan
music, dance, and food to those who are less familiar with it.

Golden Anniversary
John and Glenda Stavroulakis, Arkadi-Maleme Chapter members, celebrated their Golden Anniversary on Sunday, March 11.
They were united in marriage in the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Weirton, West Virginia, with the Rev. Stephen Natsis officiating. She is the former Glenda Holland, daughter of the late
Truman and Bernice Holland. He is the son of the late George and
Argero Pappas. John is the owner of the
family business, the Victory Lounge, on
Steubenville Pike, Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, and Glenda is the office manager
for Dr. George Macio's dental practice
in Paris, Pennsylvania. They have
two daughters: Cristol Stavroulakis of
Burgettstown and Diana Stavroulakis of
Pittsburgh. The couple celebrated with a
family dinner and a future trip to follow.

On Saturday, January 14, the Epimenides/Ariadne Chapters
of San Francisco hosted their annual Cretan Glendi. More than
350 people enjoyed an amazing meal, followed by dancing to
the sounds of Andreas Lilikakis into the early morning hours.
The event was a benefit for the Athenagoras Patriach Institute of
Orthodoxy in Berkeley, California. We were honored to have as
our guests the Very Reverend Metropolitan Gerasimos and Consul
General of Greece Ioannis Andreadis.
Our chapter also presented three scholarships to students
whose parents (or grandparents) are members of our chapter.
The recipients this year were Alexandra Binam, Michael Stratakis
and Nicholas Vavuris, all of whom shared one strong common
bond: Their grandparents, parents and even great grandparents
have been active members of our chapter for more than 50 years.

University. Finally, Nicholas Vavuris, a high school senior, is the son
of Maria and James Vavuris and the grandson of Terpsi and the late
Nick Varanis. We are very proud of all three of our recipients and we
wish them all the best in all of their future endeavors. Our thanks again to all of the members of our chapter who
worked on the event this year. Special thanks to Olga and Christo
Daskalakis for all of the time and effort they continue to put into
the leadership of our chapter. Our thanks to the Epimenides/Ariadne board and members for all of their donations and dedication
to make this event a success (It does take a village.) and to cochairs John Monolakis and Diane Kounalakis. Special thanks to Ari
Stratakis and Tessie Calligeros for their leadership as well and their

Congratulations
On February 27, a charming, beautiful baby
girl was born to Dimitri and Olga MavroforakisBikakis in Sacramento, California. We wish the
happy parents and grandparents all the joy in
the world and to see her as a bride when that
time comes. The grandparents are Andoni and
Marro Mavroforakis, residents of Sacramento,
and Michael and Julia Bikakis, residents of
Iraklion, Crete. We also congratulate Mike and
Olga Papadakis, members of Epimenides/Ariadne, who are the proud great grandparents.
Valerie Malekos-Smith is a junior at Mercy High School in
Burlingame, California, and was recently accepted to the prestigious U.S. Senate Page Program in Washington, D.C. Valerie has
been serving as an intern in the San Mateo, California, office of
State Senator Leland Yee, who recommended her to U.S. Senator
Dianne Feinstein for the program. The page program has been
serving the U.S. Senate for more than 100 years. Valerie will be
serving as a member January through June. She is currently an
honor roll student and also volunteers at Mills-Peninsula Hospital.
She is the daughter of Tim and Karen Smith and the granddaughter of Epimenides member Bess Malekos. We wish her all the best
and congratulate her on this great honor and accomplishment.
On September 10, 2011, Angelo and Maria (Papadogiannis)
Vandarakis welcomed a third son, named Constantinos. Baby
Constantinos has two older brothers, Demetrios and Georgios
and they reside in Danville, California. Angelo is the son of James
and Karen (Delis) Vandarakis of Burlingame, California, and Maria
is the daughter of George and Ioanna (Sifaki) Papadogiannis of
Exopoli, Hania, Crete. Congratulations!
Pascha Social
On April 22, the president of Epimenides/Ariadne Chapter Christo
Daskalakis along with his wife Olga Daskalakis, treasurer, hosted a

barbeque, the San Fransisco chapter’s seventh annual Pascha Social,
in the backyard of their home. Epimenides/Ariadne offered lamb,
chicken, hot dogs, pilafi and salad. Members shared their Easter
specialties. About sixty members and friends attended the event.
We were blessed with a beautiful day and with good company which
made this event exceptionally enjoyable. KAI TOU XPONOU!
Speedy Recovery
To Nick Varanakis, Jr., who was recently hospitalized at Stanford
University Hospital for a major operation. Nick is now recovering nicely in his home in Daly City, California. Perastika. To Steve
Monolakis, an Epimenides/Ariadne board member, who has
recently been hospitalized with a hernia surgery. Steve is now
recovering at his home in San Mateo.

Ikaros at the Oscars
If you were like 40
million other Americans
on Sunday, February 26,
then you were probably
watching the 84th Annual Academy Awards®.
What you may not
have known, though, is
that there were many
members of the Ikaros
George Frangadakis and Michael Francis
Chapter involved with
the production. You may have even seen a few of them on the
screen. If you were one of those who like to watch the credits at
the end of shows, then you saw the name of Michael Francis scroll
across the screen. For Michael, whose parents Frank and Kula
were among the founding members of Ikaros, this was his thirtyseventh year on the Academy Awards® production team, where
he is the manager of the page staff, handling talent logistics, and
the seat fillers, who make sure the audience always looks full on TV.
Ikaros members who worked on Michael’s staff included George
Frangadakis and Stephanie Jewell (daughter of Helen Francis),
who both worked the Red Carpet and backstage. Those who were
seat fillers in the audience included Heidi and James Paizis, Nick
and Sheri Mavrakis, Linda Francis Lampros, Tricia Mockler, Marilyn
Spero, Jonathan and Jeremy Hodges.
But they were not the only Greeks that were part of Michael’s
operation on the show. Michael has made an effort through the
years of giving breaks in the industry to young Greeks, and this
year Michael’s staff also included Helayne, Markella and Alexandra
Damianos, of St. James, New York, Lisa Peirce from Price, Utah,
and Athena Hogue from Los Angeles (niece of Academy Award®
winner George Chakiris.) Other Greeks who got to participate as
seat fillers included George Kasolas of San Jose, Helen Segura of
Price, Utah, and Joanna Topetzes of Los Angeles.
Next up, you may see Michael and his Greeks at the Primetime
Emmys® in September, so be sure to watch.

Michael Frangadakis named a County Commissioner
We are all proud of Ikaros member
Michael Frangadakis, who on March 20,
was appointed by the Santa Clara Board
of Supervisors to be the National Guard
and Veterans Affairs Commissioner for
the County of Santa Clara. Michael has a
long record of service to the country and
state, and is responsible for the successful Operation Yellow Ribbon in Los Gatos,
a program which has been sending much
needed items to soldiers serving in both
Iraq and Afghanistan. He is also a member
of the California State Military Reserve, and helps train soldiers before deployment overseas. Michael was nominated by Supervisor
Mike Wasserman, the former mayor of Los Gatos. Michael was officially sworn into office on Thursday, April 12. Any county business
involving the military or veterans will come under his auspices.

On Saturday, March 31, a big birthday party was held for Helen Frangadakis, who turned 90 years old. The party was hosted

in Palo Alto, with

closest friends and relatives in attendance to help Helen celebrate this great milestone. The restaurant served a traditional
Greek feast, prepared by EVVIA’s owners, and Helen’s nephew
and niece, Dr. Ken and Angie Frangadakis. It was also the birthday for both Nick and Mary Pagonis, who were also at the party.
Happy Birthday was sung to all three Cretan seniors.
Ikaros is truly fortunate to have so many nonagenarians among
its membership. Those over 90 who were at Helen’s party included
Helen’s sisters-in-law Kay Frangadakis and Helen Francis, Nick Pagonis and the patriarch of the chapter, Helen’s husband, 93-year-old
Manos Frangadakis. All were among the founding members of our
Ikaros Chapter. Helen was born in Rains, Utah, in 1922.

Greek Orthodox Church and Ladies Philoptochos Society “Areti.” She was also a member of
Daughters of Penelope, Semale Chapter, and the
first female president of the Pancretan Association Venizelos Chapter.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in
death by a brother, Anthony “Tony” Vagionis and
his wife Catherine. Surviving Sophia is her loving
husband, Leo Pappas, and two daughters, Anastasia Brancazio
and her husband, Dr. Leo Richard, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina,
and Nicolette Marie Fenimore and her husband, William, of
Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and five grandchildren, Mary Kathryn,
Sophia Nicole, Dominic Leo, and Victoria Anne Brancazio, and William Michael Fenimore. Sophia is also survived by two brothers,
Dr. George Vagionis and his wife, Betty, of Leechburg, P. and Theo
Harry Vagionis of Florida and several nieces and nephews. May
her memory be eternal.
Condolences
Ann Helen Pappas Grimm passed away on March 19. She was
born on December 4, 1927, in Wheeling,
West Virginia, and was the daughter of the
late John and Anastasia Pappas.
Mrs. Grimm was a retired medical receptionist for Dr. William Mercer and the late Dr.
William J. Steger. She was a member of St.
John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church and
a member of the Pancretan Association and
Ladies Philoptochos Society “Areti.”
Ann’s pride and joy was her daughter,
Kimberley; any conversation with her included, “My daughter’s a
registered nurse at Wheeling Hospital.” She had a driver’s license
but preferred to ride the bus five days a week, every week.
Travels included visits to local hospitals and Wal-Mart. Honest
and kind, giving to others, asking nothing in return, Ann was well
dressed and with a pocketbook full of two dollar bills that she
gave to many children throughout her travels. Talents included
baking Greek pastries and crocheting many beautiful afghans that
she gave generously to family and friends. Ann was loved by all
that knew her. Memories of her will live in our hearts forever.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, William “Bill” Pappas and a sister, Koula. Ann is survived by her
husband, Robert Lee Grimm, a daughter, Kimberley A. Grimm of
Wheeling, a sister, Helen Pappas Antosz of Colerain, Ohio, brothers, Ted Pappas of Warwood and Leo Pappas of Wheeling, and
several nieces and nephews. May her memory be eternal.

Condolences
Sophia Vagionis Pappas passed away February 28. She was
born September 16, 1933, in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, and was the
daughter of the late Nicholas Vagionis and Maria Panos Vagionis.
