Dear IS Modena families,
Back to school evenings
Thank you for your positive feedback on the new organization of the back to school nights. We are
very pleased of the high participation in the evenings and numerous positive feedback received.
Wesley College Orchestra from Melbourne Australia visiting IS Modena
Exciting event coming up as we prepare to host the Wesley Orchestra from Melbourne, Australia on
September 24th. A musical band, Wesley College Orchestra, consisting of 13 students and 3 teachers
travelling all the way from Australia will be visiting our school, to perform a wide and varied
repertoire ranging from rock and roll and film music to folk song style. The ensemble is a mix of
violins, trumpets, drums, guitar, bass guitar and keyboard.
We are still looking for host families for these talented students among our Middle Years and if you
wish to be part of this exciting opportunity please return the signed slip to the office asap.
Welcome Lunch
Don’t miss out on our annual PTA Welcome Lunch 2014, a fantastic opportunity for students,
families and staff members to get to know each other while enjoying a typical local lunch. We hope
many of you will be able to join us on Saturday 20th. The PTA can be contacted via

After school activities
Trial week for our lunch & after school activities! Please make sure you inform our office by 2:00 pm
if your child(ren) is not riding the bus home. After each trial session you will receive an email
requesting confirmation on whether your child(ren) will take part in the activities starting next
Monday, September 22.
Mother Tongue Programmes for German, Portuguese and Spanish are being finalised and we aim to
start the weekly sessions by the end of September to allow our many new students enough time to
settle in smoothly in the school routine. Details will be mailed to the families over the next weeks.
Bus service
We have received a few complaints regarding the bus service and the school has promptly informed
the service provider, AMNE, to seek solutions for improving and resolving the single cases. I am
constantly in communication with Mr. Sandri, president of AMNE, and Mr. Ferrari, bus coordinator to
make sure our bus service can run as smoothly as possible. First weeks can be a bit chaotic as
students and families get used to the daily routine. All the AMNE bus drivers have been testing all
the various routes of our buses and this is why you may have seen different drivers picking up your
child(ren) on different days. Traffic jams and road construction work will happen throughout the
school year.

PYP Workshop for parents
Ms. Jacky Payne, our Primary Years Coordinator, will be holding a parents workshop to introduce
the IB Primary Years Programme together with Ms. Chiara Forti for Italian translation. The
workshop is aimed for helping parents new to our programmes grasp a better understanding of how
they work. All Primary parents are invited to attend on Tuesday, September 23 from 8:45 to
10:00 in the Auditorium. Please confirm your attendance by Monday 22.

We remind you that our Primary Years and Middle Years curriculum guides are available online in
the “Learning at IS Modena” section on our school website.
IB Diploma implementation update
In June, IS Modena hosted a consultant from the IB, who was charged with assessing our progress
towards implementation of the IB Diploma Programme for first teaching in September 2015. Earlier
this month, we received the IB's consultation visit report and we are delighted to communicate to
you the following findings:
- the report confirms that planning is on track in all areas. Our areas for action are perfectly in line
with our own action plan and the consultant believes that we are in good shape to submit our
application for authorisation;
- school philosophy is in line with that required to deliver the IBDP;
- school leadership and structure is appropriate for programme implementation and we will appoint
a full-time DP Coordinator for September 2015;
- the school will have appropriate resources for DP delivery once the DP-building extension is
complete with revamped library and science lab provision;
- the teaching faculty has a good understanding of IB practises and should be able to easily apply
these to the DP.
This autumn, we expect to see major steps taken towards submitting our official application for
authorisation, including but not limited to:
- teacher exchanges with colleagues in Milan;
- ToK discussions with the Modena faculty with Milan's experienced ToK Coordinator;
- official IB residential and online workshops for teachers;
- completion of DP course outlines for the subjects that we will offer;
- the first signs of our campus extension.

what it does and how to become part of it.

INFORMATION
Bus Service
Bus routes are determined by the bus company who try to provide the most efficient route
possible. Please be aware that your child can be on the bus for up to 1 hour each trip.
As part of improving overall safety and efficiency a number of rules for the bus have been
developed:
 Students should be ready for the bus a couple of minutes before their assigned pick-up time.
 Ensure shoes are clean.
 Parents are responsible for ensuring their child is on the bus in the morning.
 Parents must advise the bus company if their child is not taking the bus.
 The school is responsible for ensuring students get on the bus at the end of the school day.
Please note that buses may leave from school any time from 15:10 to 15:20 in the afternoon.
 The school requires a note or email from parents before 14:00 if they are intending to
collect their child from school and transport is not required. Without notification students
will be put on the bus.
 Students are not allowed to change bus routes for any reason.
 If there is an emergency, then the School Manager should be contacted and alternative
arrangements will be made.
 Changes in the bus schedules may take place to accommodate new students. We hope you
appreciate the bus company try their best to keep these to a minimum.
 Students must remain seated with their seatbelts fastened at all times while on the bus.
Respectful behaviour on the buses is expected from all students.
 Should a child repeatedly misbehave on the bus, then the bus company and the school might
agree to have the bus service suspended for that child for a couple of days.
Celebrating student birthdays in school
We welcome the celebration of birthdays in our school however, there are a few guidelines that
need to be observed:
a) We will admit into school grounds only “nut free” birthday cakes or pastries and they will have
to be purchased goods and not homemade.
b) You will have to inform the school office at least 3 days prior to the date you wish to bring
the cake to school. Written communication via mail is preferable.
c) To avoid disruption in class, students will be allowed to bring cakes and pastries onto school
grounds ONLY on birthday occasions.
Please refrain from giving your child/children any cakes/tarts/pies and pastries to be shared with
classmates.
The well being of our students is our upmost priority and due to the presence of various
allergies in our community, students are not allowed to share food.

HEALTH & SAFETY
Security
The safety and security of your children is extremely important to us.
All parents and visitors must sign in at the office when entering the school
building and sign out when leaving.
We ask all parents to use the outer parking lot and enter through the small gate.
Please help us in ensuring that the small gate is closed at all times. The school has
an evacuation procedure which will be used in the case of either fire or other
security alert. Regular fire and earthquake drills take place throughout the school
year.
OUR SCHOOL IMPLEMENTS A STRICT NUT-FREE POLICY
No food containing any type of nuts or nut traces is allowed in the school building at
any time.
Please note: Nutella does contain nuts.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping everyone in our school healthy and safe.
Snacks/Drinks: Please note that students may bring healthy snacks or fruit to enjoy
during their breaks.
Sweets, crisps and high sugar drinks (Coke, Sprite, Ice-Tea) are not allowed.
No gum is permitted anywhere in the building or on the school grounds.
Early Years students bring only fruit.
Sun Cream/Sunscreen
The school does not provide sun cream/sunscreen for students. Please send it in
with your child if you want him/her to wear it during break times. Please ensure
that he/she knows how to apply it and that he/she understands that it is not to be
shared with other students.

Serate di Rientro a scuola
Vi ringraziamo per il riscontro positivo alla ns. nuova organizzazione per le Serate di Rientro a
scuola. Siamo molto contenti dell’ottima partecipazione e dei commenti ricevuti.
Orchestra del Wesley College, Melbourne, Australia in visita a IS Modena
Un evento emozionante per i ns. studenti, in arrivo il 24 settembre, l’orchestra del Wesley College
di Melbourne. Una banda, l’Orchestra del Wesley College, composta da 13 studenti e 3 insegnanti
che sta viaggiando dall’Australia, visiterà la nostra scuola, si esibirà in un repertorio ampio e variato
che spazia dal rock and roll alle colonne sonore fino alla musica folk. L’ensemble è un mix di violini,
percussioni, chitarra, basso e tastiere.
Abbiamo qualcuno di questi talentuosi studenti da ospitare presso le ns. famiglie delle Medie. Se
volete essere partecipi di questa esperienza unica, consegnate il modulo firmato presso la ns.
segreteria appena possibile.
Pranzo di benvenuto 2014
Non perdetevi questa fantastica opportunità per studenti, famiglie e membri dello staff per
conoscersi gustando un tipico pranzo locale organizzato dal PTA.

Attività dopo scuola
Questa settimana inizia la “settimana di prova per le attività dopo scuola”. Al termine della lezione
di prova riceverete una mail dalla segreteria per la conferma o meno della partecipazione di vs.
figlio/a.
I Programmi Madre Lingua per Tedesco, Portoghese e Spagnolo sono in corso di organizzazione e
contiamo di avviarli entro fine settembre per permettere ai numerosi nuovi studenti di adattarsi alla
routine scolastica. I dettagli verranno inviati alle famiglie degli studenti coinvolti nel corso delle
prossime settimane.
Servizio bus scolastico
Abbiamo ricevuto alcune lamentele in merito al servizio del bus scolastico e abbiamo prontamente
informato il fornitore del servizio, AMNE, per giungere a soluzioni e migliorie dei singoli casi. Sono in
contatto costante con il presidente dell’AMNE, sig. Sandri e il coordinatore del servizio, sig. Ferrari
al fine di ottenere un servizio bus il più fluido possibile.
Le prime settimane possono essere caotiche con l’adattamento degli studenti e genitori alla nuova
routine giornaliera. Tutti gli autusti AMNE hanno testato le diverse rotte dei pulmini ed è per questa
ragione che potreste aver visto autisti diversi in giorni diversi. Mentre ingorghi per il traffico e lavori
stradali potranno capitare durante tutto l’anno scolastico.

PYP Workshop per i genitori
Ms. Jacky Payne, Coordinatrice del Programma delle Primarie, terrà il workshop introduttivo sul
Programma IB, martedì 23 settembre dalle 8:45 alle 10:00 con l’aiuto di Ms. Chiara Forti per la
tarduzione in Italiano. Il workshop mira a fornire una migliore conoscenza di come funzionano i ns.
programmi didattici. Tutti i genitori delle materne e elementari sono invitati a partecipare. Vi
preghiamo di confermare la vs. presenza entro lunedì 22 p.v.

Ricordiamo ai ns. Genitori che le guide curriculari sono disponibili sul sito della scuola nella sezione
“Apprendimento a IS Modena”.
Aggiornamento sull’implemenntazione del Diploma IB
Lo scorso giugno abbiamo ricevuto la visita di un consulente IB incaricato di verificare il ns.
progresso nell’implementazione del Programma del Diploma IB con obbiettivo l’inizio
dell’insegnamento a settembre 2015. All’inizio del mese abbiamo ricevuto il report dell’IB sulla
visita di consultazione e siamo molto contenti di comunicarvi le seguenti risultanze:
- Il report conferma che la programmazione procede secondo i piani in tutte le aree. Le ns. aree di
azione sono perfettamente in linea con il ns. piano di implementazione e il consulente ha
confermato che siamo a buon punto per poter procedere con l’invio della richiesta di
autorizzazione;
- la filosofia della scuola è in linea con quanto viene richiesto dal Programma del Diploma IB
(IBDP);
- la leadership scolastica e la struttura sono adatte per l’implementazione del programma e
nomineremo il coordinatore a tempo pieno per il DP entro settembre 2015;
- la scuola avrà risorse adeguate per il DP una volta completata l’estensione dedicata
all’insegnamento del Diploma con aggiornamento della biblioteca e laboratorio di scienze dedicato;
- Il corpo docente ha una buona comprensione delle pratiche IB e applicabili al DP con facilità.
Quest’autunno prevediamo grandi passi in avanti verso la formalizzazione della richiesta di
autorizzazione ma anche:
- visite di insegnanti di Milano e ns. insegnanti in visita a Milano;
- sessioni mirate sull’insegnamento del ToK ai ns. docenti di Modena da parte dell’esperto
Coordinatore ToK di Milano;
- IB Workshop residenziali e online per i docenti;
- completamento delle linee guida dei corsi che offriremo per il Diploma;
- primi segnali di costruzione dell’estensione del ns. campus.

IMPORTANTI
Servizio bus
I giri delle navette sono definiti dalla ditta del trasporto bus che cerca di fornire il percorso più
efficiente possibile. Siate consapevoli che Vostro figlio può dover restare sul bus fino ad un’ora per
ogni viaggio.
Nel tentativo di migliorare la sicurezza e l’efficienza, sono state sviluppate alcune regole per l’uso
del bus:
 Gli studenti devono essere pronti per il bus un paio di minuti prima dell’orario di raccolta a loro
assegnato.
 Assicurarsi che le scarpe siano pulite.
 I genitori hanno la responsabilità di garantire che i figli prendano il pulmino al mattino.
 I Genitori devono informare la ditta del bus se il loro figlio non prenderà il bus.
 La scuola ha la responsabilità di assicurarsi che gli studenti salgano sul pulmino alla fine della
giornata scolastica. I pulmini possono partire dalla scuola in qualsiasi momento tra le 15:10 e le
15:20.
 La scuola richiede un messaggio o una mail da parte dei genitori entro le 14:00 se intendono
venire a prendere i bambini a scuola e se non richiedono il servizio. Salvo diversa
comunicazione, i bambini saranno messi sul pulmino.
 Agli studenti non è permesso cambiare pulmino per alcun motivo. In caso di emergenza, allora
deve essere contattata la School Manager e saranno apportate modifiche.
 Cambiamenti nell’orario del bus possono essere fatti per accogliere nuovi studenti. Speriamo
apprezziate lo sforzo della ditta del bus nel contenere i cambiamenti.
 Gli studenti devono restare seduti con le cinture allacciate per tutto il tempo che sono sul bus.
Gli studenti devono avere un comportamento educato sul bus.
 Se uno studente dovesse ripetutamente comportarsi male sul bus, la ditta del trasporto e la
scuola potrebbero concordare di sospendere il servizio bus per quel bambino per un paio di
giorni.
Celebrare il compleanno degli studenti a scuola
I festeggiamenti dei compleanni sono benaccetti nella nostra scuola, tuttavia ci sono alcune linee
guida da seguire:
a) Possiamo accettare a scuola solo torte o dolci “senza frutta a guscio” e devono essere
acquistati e non fatti in casa.
b) Dovrete informare la segreteria almeno 3 giorni prima della data in cui intendete portare la
torta a scuola. Una comunicazione scritta è preferibile.
c) Per evitare interruzioni nelle lezioni, agli studenti è permesso portare a scuola torte e dolci
SOLO in occasione di compleanni.
Vi invitiamo ad evitare di dare a vostro figlio torte/crostate/dolci da condividere con i compagni di
classe.
Il benessere dei nostri studenti è la nostra priorità assoluta e vista la presenza di varie allergie
nella nostra comunità, agli studenti non è permesso condividere cibo.

Salute & Sicurezza
Sicurezza
La sicurezza e l’incolumità dei nostri bambini è estremamente importante.
Tutti i genitori e i visitatori devono registrarsi in segreteria quando entrano a scuola e
devono segnare l’uscita quando escono. Chiediamo a tutti i genitori di usare il parcheggio
esterno e di entrare dal cancellino. Vi chiediamo di assicurarvi che il cancellino sia sempre
chiuso. La scuola ha una propria procedura di evacuazione in caso di incendio o di altro
allarme di sicurezza. Prove di evacuazione anti-incendio o anti-sismiche vengono condotte
regolarmente nel corso dell’anno scolastico.
NELLA NOSTRA SCUOLA E’ IN VIGORE UN RIGOROSO DIVIETO DI CONSUMO
DI FRUTTA A GUSCIO
Nessun alimento contenente frutta a guscio o tracce di frutta a guscio è ammesso
nell’edificio scolastico in qualsiasi momento.
NB: la Nutella contiene frutta a guscio.
Ringraziamo per la cooperazione nel mantenere un ambiente sano e sicuro per tutti.
Merende/bevande: si prega di notare che gli studenti possono portare merende sane o
frutta da gustare durante le ricreazioni.
Caramelle, patatine e bevande gassate (Cola, Sprite e The Freddo) non sono consentiti.
Non è permesso consumare gomme da masticare all’interno e all’esterno della scuola.
Gli studenti delle Materne portano solo frutta.
Protezione Solare/Schermo Solare
La scuola non fornisce crema solare/schermo solare agli studenti. Vi preghiamo di fornire la
crema solare a Vostro figlio se desiderate che la metta durante la ricreazione. Assicuratevi
che sappia come applicarla e che capisca che non può essere condivisa con gli altri
studenti.

REMINDERS
School activity starts at 8:30!
We kindly remind you that school days start at 8:30 sharp. Which means the school activity will
begin exactly at 8:30 and any late comers will be disrupting class. Please try to make an effort and
come in before 8:30 am, children can be dropped off from 8:10 onwards.
L’attività accademica inizia alle 8:30!
Vi ricordiamo che le lezioni iniziano alle 8.30 in punto. Ciò significa che le attività didattiche della
giornata iniziano proprio alle 8:30 e qualsiasi ritardatario si ritroverà ad interrompere
inevitabilmente il lavoro della classe. Vi invitiamo a cercare di arrivare prima delle 8.30, vi
ricordiamo che gli studenti possono arrivare dalle 8:10 in avanti.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
Students are expected to wear the school uniform which consists of a blue polo shirt and a blue
sweatshirt. Students can wear the short sleeved polo shirt and winter jacket on top for outdoor
activities. Please make sure your children refrain from wearing personal sweatshirts, cardigans or
jumpers. Please refer to the Student-Parent Handbook for further information.
DIVISA DELLA SCUOLA
Gli studenti devono indossare la divisa della scuola composta da una polo a manica lunga e/o corta
e felpa blue. Gli studenti possono indossare la polo a maniche corte sotto al giaccone per le
attività esterne. Vi preghiamo di assicurarvi che i vs. figli non vengano a scuola con felpe, cardigan
e/o maglioni personali. Vi invitiamo a consultare lo Student-Parent Handbook per ulteriori
informazioni.
PARKING AREA
All parents must use the public parking area outside the school gate at all times.
Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you don’t leave any personal belongings in
the car.
Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus service.
PARCHEGGIO ESTERNO
Tutti i genitori devono utilizzare sempre il parcheggio all’esterno del cancello. Ricordatevi di
chiudere le portiere dell’auto e non lasciate borse e borsette in macchina. Il parcheggio interno è
riservato allo staff e ai bus scolastici.
