The Past is a constant accumulation of images, but our
brain is not an ideal organ for constant retrospection and
the best we can do is to pick out and try to retain those
patches of rainbow light flitting through memory. The act
of retention is the act of art, artistic selection, artistic
blending, artistic re-combination of actual events.

Per me le foto d’archivio sono
sempre una fonte di ispirazione.
Quando ho in mano vecchie
foto mi sembra di "sentire" il
tempo, lo tengo tra le mani per
trattenerlo, per non farlo scivolare
via. L’immaginazione inizia a
raccontarmi storie, tutto ciò che
resta fuori dalla superficie del
rettangolo. L’immagine mi serve
come punto di partenza e da quel
punto mi sembra di districare
questo groviglio di storie.
Durante il workshop proporrò
ai partecipanti di unirsi a questo
processo, utilizzando proprio
materiale d’archivio o progetti
personali in via di sviluppo con la
finalità di creare un photobook.
I partecipanti potranno
portare più tipologie di oggetti,
visuali, testuali, cartoline, lettere,
o un proprio lavoro di base che
individualmente verrà seguito
per creare una narrazione e un
prodotto finito.
To me, archive pictures are always
inspirational. When I hold old
pictures I almost feel time, I
hold it so it would not slip away.
Imagination starts telling me
stories, all those things which are
not contained by the surface of the
picture. The picture is the starting
point for unraveling these tangled
stories.
During the workshop I will ask
participants to join my process,
using own archival materials or
personal ongoing projects. The final
output will result in a photobook.
Participants may bring different
objects, pictures, texts, postcards,
letters, or also a personal project to
be developed individually during the
workshop, to create a narrative and
a final product.

Chiacchierata con i
partecipanti e scelta delle
modalità di sviluppo del workshop:
opzione A) lavorare con
materiale personale, sulla base
di un progetto già avviato, per
sviluppare un proprio libro in
maniera individuale;
opzione B) lavorare
collettivamente con materiale
d’archivio (portato dai
partecipanti) per sviluppare un
libro per ogni gruppo di lavoro.
Secondo giorno
Presentazione di libri di autori
russi che lavorano con il tema
della famiglia, della memoria, del
recupero di materiale d’archivio.
I partecipanti discutono i
loro progetti. Lavori pratici di
progettazione: stampare, tagliare,
incollare, cucire prototipi di carta
proporzionali al formato finale del
libro.

Presentation of photographic
projects and publishing products by
Julia Borissova.
Quick talk with participants
and selection of ways of working:
option A) working with own
material, based on a personal
ongoing project, to develop an
individual book;
option B) working in group
with archive materials (brought by
participants), to develop a collective
book.
Day 2
Presentation of books by Russian
authors involved with family,
memory, archives.
Participants discuss their
projects and start to use materials
in a practical way: printing, cutting,
pasting, sewing paper dummies,
which resemble the final size of the
book.

Julia Borissova è nata a Tallinn,
Estonia. Vive a San Pietroburgo,
in Russia, dove ha studiato
all’Accademia di Fotografia
nel 2009–2010. Si laurea nel
programma Fotografia come ricerca
2011–2013.
I suoi lavori sono inclusi in
numerose esposizioni collettive
in Russia e all’estero. Allo
stesso tempo è protagonista di
cinque personali, l’ultima delle
quali — DOM (Document. Object.
Model) — tenutasi a maggio alla
galleria FotoDepartament di San
Pietroburgo.
Julia Borissova vince nel
2013 il Premio Internazionale
di Fotografia (categoria
sperimentale); il premio The Baltic
Photo Biennale. Photomania nella
categoria Fine Art; partecipa
al Noorderlicht International
Photofestival 2013 TWENTY.
Il suo primo libro, The Farther
Shore, è stato selezionato nel 2013
fra i cinquanta finalisti del Festival
Internazionale di Photobook di
Kassel. Il progetto Running to
the Edge è stato selezionato fra i
dieci finalisti professionisti nella
categoria Conceptual del Sony
World Photography Awards.

Julia Borissova was born in Tallinn,
Estonia. She lives in St. Petersburg,
Russia, where she studied at the
Academy of Photographic skills in
2009–2010. She graduated in the
program Photography as a research
2011-2013.
Her works have been included
in several Russian and international
group shows. Besides she had five
solo exhibitions, the last — DOM
(Document. Object. Model) — was in
May 2014 at the FotoDepartament
Gallery in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Julia Borissova has won the
prize in 2013 International Fine
Art Photography Competition
(Experimental category); the
competition The Baltic Photo Biennale.
Photomania in the Fine Art category;
participant at the Noorderlicht
International Photofestival 2013
TWENTY.
Her first book The Farther
Shore was selected for a shortlist
of 50 books in the International
Photobook Festival 2013 in Kassel,
Germany. The project Running to
the Edge was selected for the top
10 professional shortlist in the
Conceptual category, in 2013 Sony
World Photography Awards.
