for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.
GOD’S LOVE IS STRONGER THAN DEATH
We sometimes use the expression ‘changing the goal
posts’ to describe a situation when a new, previously
unknown, condition is prescribed. Today’s Gospel
does just that. The Old Testament had given some
information about the long awaited
saviour of Israel, the Messiah, or in
Greek, the Christ. He was to be in
the line of King David, he was to be
born in Bethlehem, and he was to
be God’s chosen one. Jesus adds a
new criterion for being a Messiah –
that he must suffer and die.
Nothing in the Scriptures suggested this, which is
why the death of Jesus destroyed the hopes of his
first disciples. To them, his death meant failure. God
had abandoned him and their hopes were in vain.
Jesus changes the goal posts to include suffering and
death as part of his being the Messiah. Rather than a
sign of rejection by God, his death needs to be
understood in another framework.
I find this helpful. There is much about God’s ways I
do not understand. Theological words don’t always
meet my need for consolation or certainty. There
are times I just have to accept that God’s goal posts
are different to mine. God’s perception is bigger than
mine. Jesus reveals this to his disciples, ‘your way of
understanding wasn’t big enough’. Notice how even
when they see Jesus the Gospel says, ‘they could not
believe it’. Jesus needed to explain to them and
stretch their understanding to accept what their eyes
saw. Jesus is raised. A new dimension of human living
is revealed. God’s love is stronger than death.

EASTER SERIES BEGINS THIS WEEK
A series of three evenings exploring faith and
Scripture, featuring theologian Fr Kevin Lenehan and
Scripture scholar Br Rod Doyle begins this week on
Wednesday 22 April. The series continues on
Wednesdays 6 May and 13 May. These gatherings
will be a 7.30pm in St Ambrose’s Community
Centre.
Rev. Dr Kevin Lenehan is the
Associate Dean of Catholic Theological
College. His doctoral research has studied
the thought of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and
René Girard on the relationship between
Christian discipleship and
the cultural function of
religion. On 22 April, he will focus on
Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Dr Br Rod Doyle is a a senior fellow of
Catholic Theological College and a
member of the Department of Biblical
Studies. He lectured in the New
Testament and still supervises research
essays. For our sessions on 6 and 13
May, Br Rod will focus on the Four Gospels.
The three evenings will give parishioners an
opportunity to explore the richness of our faith in a
creative and meaningful way. All welcome!

MEETING REMINDER
The Parish Leadership Team meets this Thursday
evening 23 April at 7.00pm in the parish house at
Our Lady’s.
ANZAC DAY
Mass will be celebrated by
Archbishop Denis Hart at St
Patrick’s Cathedral at 9.30am on
Anzac day, next Saturday, 25 April
to remember the Centenary of the Anzac Landing at
Gallipoli. There will also be a 10.00am Mass at St
Ambrose’s.
OLIVE HARVEST TODAY!
Following the 10.30am Mass
today we will have the
annual harvesting of the
parish olive trees in the
front garden of St
Ambrose’s church. All are
invited to be part of this by
picking olives at ground level
or up a ladder! These olives will be prepared and
sold at our forthcoming ‘Brunswick Market
Day’ (previously known as the Fete) which will be
held on 21 November this year. Mark that date on
your calendar!
LARGE JARS NEEDED
Those who are preparing the olives for the
Brunswick Market Day will need large jars in
which to store the prepared olives. If you
have any spare jars at home, please bring
them in to either church in the parish over
the next couple of weeks.
FRUIT FOR JAMS, OR VEGIES FOR PICKLES
To all those friends who
provided the jars for jam, in
preparation for the Brunswick
Market Day, thank you! The
response was great! As the year
goes on, any parishioners who have excess fruit or
vegetables suitable for making into jams, pickles or
chutneys please call me on 0409 324 882 and I will
arrange to pick them up. Lemons are always
welcome.

CAN YOU HOST A SMALL GROUP MEAL?
The ‘Meals in Small Groups’
initiative provides an
opportunity for parishioners
to get to know one another a
little better, and simply to
enjoy each others’ company.
At present we are looking for
people who would be willing
to host a meal, from about 7.00pm, on one of the
following Saturday evenings: 9 May, 16 May or 23
May. And you don’t even need to do all the cooking!
Parishioners can bring along one or two of the
courses. You are invited to keep one of those dates
free if you’d like to share a meal in a small group.
Once the hosts are established we can let you know
the venues for the meals. Those who are able to

MACKILLOP PILGRIMAGE
Sixteen parishioners have confirmed that
they are going on the MacKillop
Pilgrimage (by walking and minibus) from
Portland to Penola via Hamilton from
Monday 21 September ‘til Monday 28
September this year. However, there is
still room for four more. If you’re
interested, please see Fr Michael this weekend.
LITURGY PLANNING TEAMS
Would you like to be part of a team that meets with
Fr Michael and Fr Vinh to prepare the liturgies for
our Sunday Masses? Each team would meet perhaps
once or twice in the year depending on the number
of people who volunteer. The team would discuss
ideas for the focus of the Mass, the music, and
suggestions for Prayers of Intercession. Interested?
Next Sunday a sign-up sheet will be available.
FESTA
There will be the Festa of the Madonna of
Servigliano celebrated by Fr Pawel Pakula
CSSR on Sunday 3 May at 3.00pm in St

NEW VICAR FOR CHRIST CHURCH
Bishop Lindsay Urwin has been
appointed as the new Anglican Vicar of
Christ Church, Brunswick. He will take
up his post in Brunswick in September.
He is currently Administrator of the
Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham – an ancient
English place of pilgrimage in the Diocese of Norwich.

FESTA DI MARIA SS DI SERVIGLIANO
MONTEMURRO
Il Comitato Promotore cordialmente invita
