Jody and I are anxiously awaiting May 15 to roll
around—that’s the day we board a plane for Kansas
City, Missouri, the location of Spring 2012
International Quilt Market! We’ll spend 4 days taking
classes, networking with shop owners from all over
the world, playing with our friends Robin & Diane
from Tater Patch Quilts in Oregon, and seeing all the
latest and greatest new fabrics, books, patterns,
notions and techniques related to the wonderful
world of quilting! Although the show doesn’t start till
Thursday, we like to go a couple of days early and do
our own “shop hop” to find new and different ideas
that are successful in quilt shops outside our own
area. Stay tuned for an announcement about the
“unveiling” of our Market purchases near the end of
May/beginning of June!

I will also be busy this Summer helping my
daughter, Erin, plan a very important event—her
wedding!! You may remember that she became
engaged on our family vacation in Hawaii last
July. Erin and Rich will be tying the knot in Chico,
CA, on September 22!
Thanks for all your inquiries and get well wishes
following my little rotary cutting accident last
December and subsequent surgery. My foot is
healing nicely with the help of the wonderful
therapists at Lucas Physical Therapy just a couple
doors down from The Granary! I ran my first postsurgery 5K race on St. Patrick’s Day!
I know I sound like a broken record, but I do like
to acknowledge all the wonderfully talented,
knowledgeable and kind-hearted girls that make
the Granary such a warm and welcoming
environment. I am so lucky to have them on staff.
They take care of the store and its customers as if
they were their own. It’s a very fun place to come
to work every day!
I love Summertime at the shop! We have so much fun
planning events that bring lots and lots of people to
our store. This will be our 12th year participating in a
shop hop. Last year we had over 800 people visit the
Granary! It’s so gratifying to hear new customers say
“I’ll definitely be coming back here!” We’ve already
got some great stuff planned for this year so don’t
miss out. See page 2 for more details. Did someone Please join me in welcoming our newest Granary

Paula
Paula and Julie began their third
block of the month quilt together in
January. This year’s BEAUTIFUL
quilt, Paris in the Fall, comes from
designer, Sherri K. Falls, of This &
That, and features 12 blocks (2 each
of 6 designs) and a unique pieced
sashing and pieced cornerstones which give the
quilt a vintage feel. Paula and Julie selected rich
reds, golds, greens and browns for the shop sample, but just about any color scheme/types of fabric will work--and it's fat quarter friendly! The
finished quilt measures 66” x 86”. This program is
designed for the advanced beginner to intermediate quilter and will focus on precision cutting,
piecing and pressing so that this quilt and all your
future quilts will go together in a snap. You will
learn fool-proof accurate rotary cutting skills, how
to obtain the perfect ¼” seam allowance, and pinning and pressing techniques. In addition, Paula
and Julie will also share with you other quick,
easy and accurate methods for making elements of
various other quilt blocks (e.g., flying geese, halfsquare triangles) which you may not even know
exist! This is the perfect opportunity to hone your
quilting skills, learn new techniques for faster and
easier piecing and make this beautiful quilt under
the guidance of Paula and Julie! Classes meet on
the first Friday afternoon and Saturday morning
of each month—you can choose which session
works best for you. If you have to miss a class, no
problem—make-up sessions are available. Onetime fee of $110 for 12-month program; pattern
and fabric sold separately.

Lynda Howell's 33" x 45" Changing
Seasons Block of the Month wall
hangings. One of the blocks in each
season's wall quilt features a quaint
house and tree which change with
each season; other blocks of seasonal motifs are
unique to each wall quilt. This is the last of Lynda
Howells 34-45 seasonal wall hangings. This time we
have Santa, a snowman, an angel and many more.
Our house is still there surrounded by snow. You will
learn various techniques in machine piecing and fusible machine appliquГ©-or hand appliquГ© if you prefer. Members will receive a kit for that month's section
of the 33" x 45" project. If monthly meetings don't
work for you, you can pick up your kits at the shop or
they can be mailed. Membership fee is $25 per month
and is offered by automatic credit card billing only.
The fee includes your monthly class, quilt pattern and
fabric for each of the blocks. Improve your hand or
machine appliquГ© skills with an expert!
It’s not too early to start making plans to visit 12 of the
Bay Area’s best quilt shops from San Mateo to the
Monterey Bay and the San Jose Museum of Quilts &
Textiles! You’ll have 5 days to tour the stores and see
a huge variety of fabric, books, patterns and other
quilt-related merchandise. Have your passport
stamped, do a little shopping and maybe even meet
new quilting friends along the way. Each shop hopper
who turns in a completed passport will automatically
receive a special gift and be entered into a drawing for
many fantastic prizes. Pick up your official Shop Hop
by the Bay 2012 newsletter at the Granary or visit
www.shophopbythebay.com for more details! You’re
sure to be inspired!

Mary Kay Davis has been busy this year!
July and continuing through June 2013.
In the April/May 2012 edition of The Quilt Life Magazine,
her 4 page article “From a Brown Paper Bag to Elvis” was
published. Did you know that Mary Kay is an editor for
TheQuiltShow.com with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims?
Her Curves in Bloom quilt pattern was published in the
May/June 2012 edition of McCall’s Quilting magazine.
Both magazines are still available at the Granary! She also
has a pattern, “Checkerboard Stars” in the March 2012 edition of The Quilt Pattern Magazine online.
A little bird told me you’d better watch your upcoming edition of Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine for more surprises
from Mary Kay. Visit her website at threadsonthefloor.com.
Congratulations to Dianne! At the Auburn Quilt Show in April, Dianne received Honorable Mention and a 3rd Place Viewer’s Choice Award for her quilt Holiday Sampler, which she made here at the Granary in Angela’s block of the month class.
Carol is busy making samples and putting the final touches on her newest patterns which she will preview at her second Quilt Market in May in Kansas City. Carol has now published 23 well-written, unique and clever
patterns from placemats to e-Reader cases to practical tote bags. Carol teaches many of her patterns at the Granary—
who better to learn from than the expert! Many of Carol’s patterns are available at the shop. Visit Carol’s website
quilterbynight.com to see Carol’s entire line!
Last year, Sarah graduated from The Art Institute of California with her BS in Web Design and
Interactive Media. We have been so thankful that she’s been willing to continue working at the shop on Saturday’s
given her hectic schedule with a full time job during the week. Sarah has been hard at work designing a whole new
website for the Granary with a more fun and modern look. We can’t wait to launch it this Summer!
Have you seen Sarah’s adorable quilts in the shop? Sarah has now published 4 patterns including Sash Em, Lily’s Ladybugs, Beta Bots, and her newest owl-themed pattern, Whooo’s There. Sarah is always happy to autograph her patterns for
you! Visit Sarah’s website www.sarahrosequilts.com to view her patterns; they are sold exclusively at the Granary and
Sarah’s Etsy Store which you can access through her website.
Julie is one of our most popular teachers at the Granary; she teaches many of our beginning quilting
classes including Beginning Basic Quilting, various machine quilting classes, binding, appliqué, and more. Julie is having fun writing a blog about her quilting and crafting interests. Visit Julie’s blog at thecraftyquilter.com.

Have you joined us for our “Happy Hour” yet? This Friday evening gettogether has quickly become a favorite among many customers! Come for some
appetizers and beverages and a demo of new techniques. The projects are made
using a variety of precut goods - 2½” strip sets, fat quarter bundles or 10"
squares. Each month a specially-coordinated bundle of pre-cut fabrics and a
surprise pattern will be introduced along with a thorough demonstration of
assembly techniques. You’ll provide your own background, accent and/or border fabrics
(as necessary depending upon the pattern) so everyone’s quilts will be unique. One month
prior to the meeting, you can come by the shop or check the website for a sneak-peek of the
featured fabrics. The pattern will remain a secret until the meeting and is always free with
your purchase of the fabric bundle. Join us for “Happy Hour” whichever months you
