PET CT Scan technology is based on the scanning/tracing of radioactive
sugar tracers absorbed by abnormal cell growth. During PET/CT Scan,
radioactive sugar called 18-F fluorodeoxyglucose (18-F FDG) is injected in
your blood. This special form of glucose is taken up by cells in the body from
your blood, in the same way as normal glucose. However, patients with
diabetes mellitus (DM) can have different sugar transport into cells, possibly
affecting the results of 18-FDG PET scans. It becomes vital to know the
impact of diabetes on your PET/CT results. Here are a few facts you should

Diabetes can affect PET/CT scans in two ways:

If your blood sugar levels are high, the 18-F FDG will not be taken up
as efficiently as it should be and the imaging results will be adversely
affected.
If your insulin level is on the higher side, this will also affect the scan
results as the insulin encourages your normal tissues and organs to
take up the 18-FDG radiotracer and again the imaging results will be
adversely affected.
Because blood sugar or glucose levels are so significant for PET/CT scans, all
patients coming for a PET/CT scan will have their blood glucose level tested
and measured before the 18-FDG radiotracer injection. Ideally, your blood
glucose level should be between 4 and 10 (millimoles per liter) before the
scan. If the level is higher than 12.5 mmol/l, the scan would usually need to
be re-scheduled.
