Embroiderer Jane Siddall may be engaged in
one of the gentle arts, but the subjects are
anything but sedate.
Drawing on the magical and
mythical, JaneтАЩs beautifully
stitched, sketched and collaged
creations often feature half
human-half, half-animal
creatures, wild women and
figures of the imagination.
Transformation is a recurring
theme and fairy tales, myths
and legends are a source
of inspiration.
The Bird Wife (detail)
Jane has a particular interest in feminist rewriting of fairy tales.
Originally many of these tales were not bedtime stories for children,
but were told for women, by women, and contained advice on
suitable marriage partners and warnings about life. JaneтАЩs work,
Cloth of Honour, explores a myth common in a number of cultures;
a story of a man who steals a womanтАЩs feather cloak so she
cannot fly away, her search for it and her freedom.
Jane resides near Hamilton and is guest selector for Creative
FibreтАЩs National Exhibition this year. See an exhibition of her
work at the fair where she will demonstrate on selected days.

quilts on display
тАШSeeing is believingтАЩ when the 30
finalists in the third annual AP&Q AQC

The intriguing theme of the Seven Deadly Sins was guaranteed to
provide participants with ample inspiration and consequently, the
results were eagerly anticipated.
тАШDeadlyтАЩ or тАШsinfulтАЩ are hardly adjectives normally associated with
quilts, but such an evocative theme is what makes the display of
challenge entries all the more compelling.

The vibrant colours and music evoked by the theme тАШOde to
the BluesтАЩ have formed the inspiration for an exciting array of
embroideries featured in this yearтАЩs display by members of the
Association of NZ EmbroiderersтАЩ Guilds. These embroideries
were created as part of the inaugural Bernina Postbag Colour
Challenge where each piece produced had to fit into an A3
or A4 postbag.
The display will also feature a range of beautiful work created
by embroiderers from 60 guilds around New Zealand.
The results of a new colour challenge will also be exhibited at the
Fair and you can vote for your favourite piece of embroidery
on display. Keen young stitchers can join in free childrenтАЩs
workshops on Saturday and Sunday. They will have
the opportunity to complete a fun, simple project

providing advice to visitors.
