GAZA SOUTH AFRICA Foundation for the Development of Zambezia (FDZ) The Foundation for the Development of Zambezia (FDZ), established in 2003, brings together people who share the vision of a beautiful and harmonious Zambezia breathing the pure air of justice, equity, development and peace! It will work in collaboration with all actors in the public, private and non-governmental sectors, complementing their efforts and those of civil society to promote the welfare and development of the Zambezian people. to reverse the situation. It is this latter course of action that we have chosen leading to the establishment of the Foundation for the Development of Zambezia, the first initiative of its kind, driven by the firm conviction that through collective action, the full potential of Zambezia and its people can be realized. Aims and objectives of the Foundation The fundamental aim of the Foundation is to contribute to existing efforts to improve the living conditions and well being of the population of Zambezia in the following ways: In the area of Education: Why Zambezia? With a land surface area of 105.000sq kms and a population of over 3.2 million, Zambezia is the largest and most populated province in Mozambique. However, it is also the province that suffered most during the 16-year long civil war that ravaged the country between 1976 and 1992 resulting in widespread destruction of roads and infrastructure, as well as massive disruption of agricultural production. Zambezia was once a prosperous province and active commercial center. But today, despite its rich natural resources, the province ranks the lowest on the scale of human development. Close to 70% of its inhabitants live below the poverty line and illiteracy levels are also around 70%. Educational facilities are sparse and poorly equipped and opportunities for further study are extremely limited, particularly for the poor majority without the means to pay their way to higher or university education in the capital. Lack of agricultural inputs, falling commodity prices and lack of health facilities have also contributed to the steadily declining living standards of Zambezians. 3 Supporting long and short-term scholarships, prioritizing orphans, young girls and high performing students. 3 Contributing to improvements in teacher training 3 Contributing to the broadening and improvement of formal and informal education (literacy and training courses within and outside the country) In the area of Health: 3 Contributing to the struggle to address HIV/AIDS, STDs, malaria and other illnesses through awareness-raising campaigns, provision of medicines and professional training In the area of Agriculture: 3 3 3 3 3 Supporting rural extension programmes Distribution of improved agricultural seeds Construction of dams Increasing access to land for the poor Promoting the establishment of associations in the rural sector In the area of Infrastructure: Faced with this stark reality, the citizens and friends of Zambezia were faced with two options - either to resign ourselves to the situation or to take action 3 Supporting the maintenance of roads and other access routes Activities To achieve these objectives, FDZ will strive to raise awareness at all levels of the need to improve socio-economic conditions in the Province through the following activities: Research aimed at deepening understanding of the socio-cultural and economic realities of Zambezia Developing collective action to promote sustainable development in the Province Motivating communities to participate in the search for solutions to the problems relating to their welfare Creating mechanisms aimed at enhancing school attendance of young girls and boys Establishing partnerships and exchanges with other foundations and institutions What you can do to support the work of the Foundation There are many ways in which you can support the work of the Foundation. 3 Make a donation towards a particular project or the running costs of the Foundation 3 Get in touch and contribute your ideas, suggestions, skills, contacts. 3 Sponsor a young Zambezian to help her/him prepare for and/or complete a technical degree, university degree or other primary, secondary or higher education qualification. 3 Volunteer to work on Foundation projects and/or provide one-off or regular courses in English, computer skills and other useful skills All contributors will be added to our mailing list and receive copies of the Foundation Newsletter in Portuguese and/or English.
