How can we repay the Lord for all the good he has done for us? And what do we have that we have not been given? When we realize that everything is a gift, and we are merely stewards and not owners of the good things of this world, including the gift of life itself, the only appropriate response is gratitude! Tremendous gratitude. And with a grateful heart comes the corresponding desire to set aside a meaningful return, a reasonable percentage of our wealth or income for the Lord’s treasury, out of gratitude, out of love. We give because we have been given so much. We want to give back as the Lord has given to us, freely and without reserve, and not counting the cost. Stewardship of money is probably the most difficult type of responsible stewardship because there is no masking the sacrifice. We must constantly pray, discern, and then actually budget the appropriate and generous amount of our weekly/ monthly financial gift-giving so that this gesture of responsible stewardship is not lost in the shuffle of spontaneous spending. The attitude of gratitude helps us to be honest in assessing our means. Our increased offertory gift reflects our heart’s desire to give proportionately to what God has so generously given to us. To those whom much is given, much is expected. ANNUAL MASS OF REMEMBRANCE Wednesday, November 5, at 6:30PM. As All Souls Day approaches, we are preparing for our annual Memorial Mass when we name and remember our loved ones who died in the past year. A list is posted at Church entrances the next few weeks, naming immediate relatives of parishioners (parents, spouse, children, siblings). Please check for correct spelling and add any names we may have missed, as these names will be read during the Mass on November 5th. ALTAR SERVER APPRECIATION MASS As a way to thank the many Altar Servers throughout our Diocese for their service, the Diocesan Office of Vocations is sponsoring an “Altar Server Appreciation Mass and Dessert” at the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, Loretto on Sunday, November 23 at 2:00PM. Bishop Mark Bartchak will be the Principal Celebrant and Homilist. After the Mass a dessert social will be held in Our Lady of Loretto Hall (the Basilica’s parish hall). Holy Name Altar Servers and their families are encouraged to attend this event. A sign up sheet can be found in the sacristy; please sign up no later than November 7th. ALL SOULS’ DAY November 2nd, All Souls’ Day, and in fact the entire month of November, have been designated by Catholics as a time of prayer for those who have died. The tradition of special remembrance of the dead is rooted in our belief that the dead will rise again and that all of us will be reunited in the Lord “so in Christ all will come to life again” (Cor. 15,22). The priests of Holy Name will remember at all Masses during the month of November family members, relatives and friends who have departed from this life. The names of these individuals should be listed on the envelope provided to you in the current packet of church envelopes and returned by October 31st.. 7TH—11TH GRADE CCD NEWS This weekend is a scheduled CCD weekend. RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY - RESPECT LIFE MONTH - MONTH OF THE ROSARY For many years now the month of October in general, and the first Sunday of October in particular, have been dedicated by the U.S. Catholic Bishops as Respect Life Month/ Sunday. For many more years the universal Church has dedicated the month of October to Our Lady of Victory, Queen of the Rosary. I see no competition in these two themes: we should pray the rosary in October daily if possible - for an end to legalized abortion on demand in the U.S.A. and throughout the world. We also should pray the rosary for a change of heart on the part of those who see abortion as an acceptable solution to an unwanted pregnancy. I realize that life continues, after birth, but I feel our society will never stop euthanasia, capital punishment, bombing civilians, etc., until we realize how wrong it is to take the life of an unborn child. “Charity begins at home” and the defense of life must begin at the baby’s first home - the mother’s womb. This day is set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the deepest identity of the Church in mission through prayer and sacrifices. It is a reminder that we are “one family in mission.” In this “one family” some are called to go to the missions; others support the missions in prayer and financial support. THE MUSTARD SEED OF KINDESS by Judith Dunlap Like all of Jesus’ parables, the story of the mustard seed has many lessons to offer. When I think about that tiny seed and the Kingdom of God, I think about the rippling effect one small act of kindness can have. When a person offers a smile, a helping hand or a simple courtesy it can sometimes change the course of another’s day. I am not a morning person, and with very little effort I have managed to raise a whole family of morning grumps. I remember the days when all seven of us were playing “beat the clock” at 6:30 a.m. At best, our “good mornings” were grumbled as we tried to keep out of each other’s way. Some mornings our house felt like the proverbial powder keg, just a missing sock away from disaster. On those mornings one person’s outburst over an empty milk carton could sour everyone’s day. I developed my mustard seed theory by watching how that powder keg could be defused. It didn’t take much to set things right—a shared cinnamon bun, some help searching for missing key or a ride offered to school. One person’s act of kindness could affect everyone. Since I am not my best at daybreak, it took a conscious effort for me to be that person. It was an effort that worked best when rooted in prayer. When I started the day with prayer I could find some quiet peace inside myself that helped me respond rather than react. Morning prayer helped me be my best even when grouchy. And when I let it, that mustard seed experience of peace could grow to fill a household. I picture the Kingdom of God as an eternal experience of that peace—an experience we can sometimes taste even on grumpy mornings.
