What Is Palliative Care?
Palliative Care is specialized medical care for people with serious medical illnesses.
Palliative Care is for a person of any age, at any stage of an illness. Its success lies
in clinic and home visits for assistance with disease progression, pain management,
chronic disease management. Patients can be referred to Palliative Care by their doctor
at any time during their illness.
Palliative Care is often confused with Hospice Care, which deals with end-of-life care
for patients.
Palliative Care can also provide emotional relief in addition to physical as well as a
tremendous support for family members supporting loved ones with serious illnesses.
Palliative care works with your existing Kelsey-Seybold physicians to provide an extra
layer of support.
“I believe that when patients have information and understanding about
their condition, prognosis and treatment options, then together we can make
the best plan of care. Medicine is not one-size-fits-all, and we can work as a
team to improve their quality of life and respect their goals of care.”

Who Can Benefit from Palliative Care?
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a serious illness, you may benefit from
palliative care. Your Kelsey-Seybold physician may make the decision that you or
your family member is a candidate for palliative care due to the need for their care to
be more closely managed.
Typically, patients suffering from these types of illnesses could find relief from a
more hands-on care approach to their health.

A Team Approach to Your Care
At the core of Palliative Care lies a team approach to a patient’s care. A patient’s
team may include doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses and social workers, or other
Palliative Care specialists. Thanks to this teamwork approach, the needs of the
patient and family can be assessed, understood and addressed. Patients with serious
and chronic illnesses may live longer and enjoy a higher quality of life during and
after treatment.
