Folks just kept coming in – old members, new members, and even prospective members – and the final count was 27. Our Autocross planned for October 11 had to be cancelled at the last minute when Pellissippi State notified us the site was not available due to construction work they were doing. The Harper Cars & Coffee on October 19 was a big event and Smoky Mountain Region PCA was well represented. Our Planning meeting on October 18 was well attended, with many new faces. Thanks to all who came and the many of you that sent your input for the meeting via emails. We want to say thanks to Harper for providing the space and refreshments for the meeting. The discussion was good and a lot of great ideas were shared. I am looking forward to a fun and exciting 2015 for our club. The calendar will be coming out soon. Our Fall Fest was held November 8-9. You can read all about it in this issue of Smoke Signals. Elections for next year’s Executive Council are this month. A ballot is included with this newsletter (see page 7), so be sure to vote. Thanks to Bob Hutchins and Sue Groves for serving as the Nominating Committee and to all who have agreed to serve. There are still some appointed positions open for next year. If you are interested, please contact me. Save the date! Our Holiday Party this year will be December 2 at Season’s Innovative Bar and Grille in Turkey Creek. You will be receiving a mailing with all the details. Happy motoring and see you soon. Rich Neubauer President HEARD ROUND the REGION • Cathy Hutchins heard recently from Janet Baird. She and JB will be completing their move to Texas, over Thanksgiving, so they can be closer to family to assist in JB’s care. We wish them well! • Bob and Jyme Heimans’ son was moved recently from the care center at UT Hospital, to their home. His recovery from his car accident is going to take some time, and their care in his daily activities is required. • What a great Fall Fest event this year!!! Thank you to all participants, and thank you to all of the volunteers who gave up their free time to put the event on. • Are you coming to the Holiday Party? Vic Rola Vice President FROM the DRIVER'S SEAT Another year is coming quickly to an end and I realize I did not participate in near as many PCA events as I would have wished. Sunday autocrosses and Wednesday night socials were trumped by church. Socials held on other days were either too far away or in conflict with something else I had to do. Drives always seemed to be scheduled while I was out of town or my 914 was on jack stands (its current state as I write). I did, however, make it to the 2015 Planning Meeting and was encouraged by the outcome. Autocrosses scheduled on Saturdays will allow me (and perhaps others) to attend. I am especially looking forward to the Autocross School scheduled early in 2015. A fellow 914 owner and I have been discussing a purpose-built autocrosser. Between the two of us, we have a couple 914s without titles, plenty of spare parts, and an engine or three (all of which need rebuilt). We realize the end result will most likely put us in a class where we will be woefully noncompetitive but we don’t care :) Our goal with this project is to have fun! Steve Editor November 2014 3 FALL FEST: Drive & Dinner Report by Vic Rola This years’ final Regional event, Fall Fest, started off on a warming Saturday afternoon at Smokies Stadium, Kodak, TN. Early arrivals got there about 1:00PM! Tour directors Bob Hutchins and Clyde Peery got everyone signed off on the PCA required Release Form. From 1:00 until 2:00, a lot of socializing took place. Included in the 20 Porsches that showed up were five from Magnolia PCA Region in Mississippi whose owners decided to include our event in their tour of the Smokies. The tour began at 2:00 sharp as Bob Hutchins led the way through some neat east TN locales like Luttrell and Russellville. A quick run over Jacobs Mountain was enjoyed by all! A short pit stop’ at Hardees gave all a chance to stretch their legs before continuing on to Jefferson City, TN. Once in Jefferson City, 37 PCA’ers enjoyed a Mexican feast at El Paraiso. The food was great, and the camaraderie was even better. The locals immediately spotted the 20 Porsches in the parking lot, and a lot of picture taking took place! Once dinner was over, all headed home. A few of the die-hards knew they had to get ready for Sunday’s autocross. 20 Cars on the Drive Out 37 Folks at the Dinner 27 Cars AutoX’d Great weather both days… esp. Sunday! FALL FEST: Autocross Report by Vic Rola Earlier in the year, Rick Berry took a video (GoPro) of the course that was designed quite different from previous autocross course designs utilized at Splash Country, Pigeon Forge. He planned to use the same course once again and used his video of the previous course to lay out the exact same pattern. As he and I arrived at about 7:00am with iPad in hand, we had the course laid out (and chalked) by 8:00am… unheard of! Thank you, Rick Brooksbank, Clyde Peery, and Ron Disney for your assistance. After the safety meeting, the first car was off at 10:00am. We had a good mix of cars as the SCCA was invited to participate with us. Six runs were offered to the drivers, and when all was said and done, Bonnie Foulds, driving her RSR inspired 911, took FTD Womens, while Matt Garrett, driving his high horsepower turbo, took FTD Mens. • The autocross event FTD overall was a super fast Shelby Mustang • Thank you Rick + Janis Berry of Eurotech for sponsoring the 2014 autocross series • Thank you Debbie Cooper for our trophy design 4 www.smtpca.org Autocross Results DRIVER BERRY, RICK ASHWORTH, PATTI ASHWORTH, TERRY BAKER, NEWSOM BERRY, JANIS BROOKSBANK, RICK DISNEY, RON FOULDS, BONNIE FOULDS, JONATHAN GARRETT, MATT HALTON, BRIAN KENDRICK, KIRK McGOWAN, TRAVIS PEERY, CLYDE ROLA, CAROL ROLA, VIC WHALEY, BO CAR 911 BOXSTER BOXSTER 911 911 BOXSTER 928 911 911 TURBO S CAYMAN S CAYMAN S 911 911 911 911 924 1ST 57.647 79.756 DNF 62.919 DNF 66.159 65.002 60.495 59.556 63.915 59.004 67.197 66.302 65.745 71.981 64.239 DNF 2ND 60.531 72.665 DNF 60.64 63.214 61.536 63.32 59.259 57.352 57.756 DNF 63.724 63.302 64.482 70.306 63.306 63.803 3RD 58.862 73.191 62.723 DNF 62.223 62.668 63.223 57.391 DNF 58.165 57.227 62.688 64.121 63.007 68.352 62.995 63.391 4TH 59.281 72.781 59.233 63.324 61.348 62.557 62.618 56.962 57.643 56.634 57.904 61.111 64.101 62.128 68.523 62.471 62.836 5TH 59.285 DNS DNS 60.053 61.071 62.188 61.921 57.914 56.971 57.758 57.511 61.023 65.824 DNS DNS DNS 64.214 6TH 58.487 DNS DNS 59.912 61.139 61.618 61.946 56.672 56.702 55.851 58.851 60.836 64.474 DNS DNS DNS 62.772 Smoky Mountain Region Porsches were joined by a variety of other makes - BMW, Mazda, Ford representing the SCCA on a beautiful fall day in Pigeon Forge.
