GENERATION TEXAS WEEK: Next week, November 17-21, begins Generation Texas Week. Generation Texas is a project of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, which is a statewide, grassroots movement promoting a culture of college and career readiness leading to the most successful generation ever! Key Goals: To develop a commitment among stakeholders to create a college-going culture in Texas public schools that prepares all students for post-secondary education To clarify the processes of applying for admission and student financial aid To increase awareness of and build support for the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards Throughout the week, TWHS students and staff on both campuses will be discussing colleges and careers. COLLEGE AND CAREER NEWS Seniors: If you haven't sent your December 1st applications yet, you need to send them NOW. Do not wait until the Thanksgiving break to send - colleges are not working that week either, and every year we hear horror stories about a university's server crashing and losing documents. Remember, TWHS will not be sending transcripts that week either. All transcript requests must be submitted by Monday, November 17th to make December 1st. Here are the dates for financial aid info sessions and filing assistance. Conroe ISD schools invite all parents to attend any of the scheduled events, so if high schools date works better for you, you and your senior are welcome on any campus. Juniors and Sophomores: Two cadets from the US Naval Academy will be meeting prospective students during the Thanksgiving break. If you would like to meet them and learn more about the Academy process, you can see them on Monday, November 24th from 1-3pm at Panera on 242 or on Tuesday, November 25 from 9-11am at Starbucks in Panther Creek. DUAL CREDIT COURSE INFORMATION: The dual credit teachers will be disbursing blue registration forms for the spring semester of their course to students currently enrolled in dual credit classes. These forms need to be completed and returned to their teacher with their check or money order attached. Checks need to be made out to Lone star College. If your student is taking one class, the enrollment cost is $66. For students taking two classes, they will need to bring in a check for $120. If you have any questions, please contact your student's counselor. THE WOODLANDS HIGH SCHOOL FINAL EXAM EXEMPTION POLICY 2014-2015: Students are only eligible for exemption from final exams, not midterm exams. Seniors are the only students in the Fall semester that may be exempt from final exams for half-credit courses which have a final exam, not a midterm, in the Fall semester. Students must maintain a 90-100 class average for the semester (18-weeks) and have no more than 3 absences for the semester or have an 85-89 class average for the semester (18weeks) with no more than 2 absences for the semester. In addition the following criteria apply as well: 1. Seniors must meet the criteria listed above and the discipline requirement listed below. Seniors may be exempt from all their final exams both in the Fall and Spring semesters. Seniors may not be exempt from midterm exams in the Fall semester. 2. Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors may be exempt from all their spring final exams. Students must meet the criteria listed above and the discipline requirement listed below. Underclassmen are not eligible for exemptions from final exams or midterms in the Fall semester. 3. Absences include all days missed: Excused and Unexcused. Pre-approved absences, funerals, DOC’s, and hospital stays count against exemptions. 4. School field trips, athletic events, UIL events, HCPs (health care provider - student attended school part of the day), PREs (present), GLOs (grade level office), ECLs (election clerk), CTZs (citizenship), NATs (naturalization), CVs (up to two College Visits) and religious holidays are not considered absences. 5. A student granted a final exam exemption must still attend that class during the final exam period. Failure to attend will result in a zero or an incomplete for that course. 6. Any student that has served SAC, DAEP, or OSS while enrolled in a course during the semester of the final exam is not eligible for a final exam exemption for that particular course. EDUCATION FOR TOMORROW ALLIANCE : The Education for Tomorrow Alliance SCI://TECH - Biotechnology Competition is scheduled for February 7, 2015 at Lone Star College - Montgomery. TWHS is currently looking for seven teams to represent our school. Each team is made up of two students in ninth through twelfth grade. The contest involves problem solving using technical skills to analyze DNA samples. Students that wish to participate will commit to 3 one hour after school training sessions that will be in December and January. The meetings will begin at 3 in room 312 at TWHS Senior Campus. BASEBALL SIGNING: Congratulations to Senior Highlander Baseball player Christifer Andritsos who signed his NCAA National letter of intent with The University of Oklahoma this week. GOLF: The TWHS Highlanders went to River Plantation Country Club on Thursday, November 6, to compete in the Oak Ridge High Invitational. The boys came home with the bronze medals for third place. Leading the TWHS A Team was Matt Ryan’s 82. He was followed by Jorge Abud’s 84, Zach Koele’s 86, Ethan Marts’s 86, and Drew Schnell’s 94. Their medal-winning total was 338. Also competing were the TWHS B and C Teams. Pacing the C Team was Max Cortez’s 81, followed by Daniel Ramirez’s 85, Nikhil Adoni’s 89, and Cameron Shafer’s 99. The C Team total was 354. The TWHS B Team finished with total of 359. Leading the C Team was David Carlson’s 82, followed by Jake Jacobs’s 87, Noah Raine’s 93, and Will Weisbrod’s 97. Congratulations, boys! The Lady Highlanders went to Cottonwood Creek Golf Club In Waco on Friday and Saturday, November 7-8, to compete in the very competitive Central Texas Shootout. The Lady Highlander A Team came home in fifth place, finishing with a team total of 642 (324-318). Leading TWHS A Team was Greta Bruner’s 149 (79-70). Bruner was followed by Carley Charbonneau’s 158 (79-79), Cassie Lidisky’s 167 (85-82), Oriana Jerez’s 168 (81-87), and Gracie Aday’s 172 (85-87). The TWHS B Team finished in ninth place with a total of 711 (354-357). Pacing the B Team was Jayne Clark’s 168 (82-86). Others contributing were Stephanie Lamb’s 180 (92-88), Samantha Salcedo’s 181 (90-91), Hannah Bruner’s 182 (90-92), and Veronica Grey’s 186 (92-94). Congratulations, girls! The TWHS boys went to April Sound Country Club on Monday, November 10, to compete in the Montgomery High School Invitational. Leading the Highlanders was Ethan Marts’s 76, followed by Max Cortez’s 79, Matt Ryan’s 83, Daniel Ramirez’s 85, and Nikhil Adoni’s 89. Also competing as a medalist was Noah Raine’s 87. Their team total was 323. TWHS IMPROV: On November 14th the Woodlands High School Improv Troupe will perform another hilarious show in benefit of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The show beings at 7 pm in the Auditorium, tickets are $5 – or $3 if you wear your Improv t-shirt! All proceeds go towards JDRF, and additional donations are more than welcome. See you there! FOOTBALL NEWS: The JV Green team put the finishing touches on an outstanding 2014 campaign by routing second place Kingwood 39-0 last Thursday night. Austin Barron, Connor Patrick, Jordan Talford, Eric Schmid, and Matt Mahoney scored on the night for the Highlanders. The win pushed the squad to 10-0 on the season and 6-0 in district. Impressive side notes from the season include: The team never trailed, they never failed to score less than 4 touchdowns in a contest, and they allowed only 30 points on the year including 6 points in 6 games in district. All serve as evidence that the future of Highlander football remains bright. HIGHLANDER TENNIS UPDATE: The Varsity Team Tennis season wrapped up with a Consolation win at the Region II tournament where The Woodlands fell to eventual State Champion Highland Park. TWHS ended the fall at 13-3 with all three losses coming at the hands of State-ranked teams, #1 Highland Park, #4 Memorial and #22 College Park. The Highlanders were a perfect 6-0 in 16-6A District play. The Junior Varsity had a banner day at the 16-6A fall tournament, as the Highlanders swept 1st and 2nd in EVERY EVENT. HIGHSTEPPER NEWS: Please join TWHS Highsteppers as they host a Winter Workshop for kids ages 3-Sixth grade on Saturday December 13, 2014 from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. This event will be held at TWHS Ninth Grade Campus. Cost is $45 and only an additional $20 for siblings. Boys and Girls ages 3-Fourth grade will be divided into age groups for fun activities, sports, and arts and crafts. We will have a "glamour girls" station for fancy hair and face painting, a real life "angry birds" game, and much more! 5th and 6th grade girls will be learning a dance and working in small groups on specific Highstepper skills and tricks. These girls will also have fun games and a craft. A pizza lunch will be served to all participants. JAPANESE NEWS: CULTURE FESTIVAL - On Saturday, November 15th, all the foreign languages clubs will be hosting the annual Culture Festival in TWHS cafeteria. The French, German, Japanese, Spanish, and Chinese Clubs will have booths for games and various cultural activities from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Other activities include the Japan Quiz Bowl Finals in the LGI from 12:00-12:45, and Karaoke from 1:003:00. Stop by the Auditorium from 1:30 - 2:30 for Poem recitations (German, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese). Yosakoi Soran Dance, German Folk Dance, and Spanish Salsa Dance will be performed. PBK is the architectural studio that designed The Woodlands High School. Both drawings picture views of the courtyard. Monica's drawing will be in the calendar and she will receive a $100 gift card. Daphne's drawing will be on display at PBK as honorable mention and she will receive a $50 gift card. TWHS RUGBY: Rugby is a game that develops leadership, team spirit, courage, sportsmanship, and friendship. Garrett Soileau started playing rugby his freshman year. Like most individuals who start playing rugby, he quickly fell in love and learned to play the game well. He was selected for Texas High Performance teams every year and his senior year he played for the Rocky Mountain Challenge AllTournament Team and USA Rugby Stars and Stripes, reserved for the top 50 Boys and top 50 Girls selected from Regional All Star Tournaments. In response to the question of what he loves most about rugby, Garrett explains, "The fact that everyone has the chance to prove themselves. In rugby everyone has the chance to take the ball in for the score and feel what it’s like to put points on the board for your team. Forwards have to be able to pass just as good as backs and backs have to be able to go blow up a ruck if needed. You basically have to be able to play any position which isn't like any other sport out there. To me rugby means opportunity. This sport has given me so many opportunities that I would have never gotten if it weren't for rugby. Because of rugby I've had the privilege to represent my state and even represent my country. I've made friends with people all over the United States and even overseas because of all the opportunities rugby has presented me with." Garrett is perfect example of everyone getting a chance to prove themselves in rugby. He most recently was invited to the U20 Junior Men's All American World Trophy team. GERMAN NEWS: The German students are beginning to prepare for over 40 events in February's UIL competition. Interested students should regularly check the wall calendar outside the German Classroom regarding after-school practices. SCIENCE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: Science National Honor Society held their 6th annual Science Night last night, and did a great job. They performed over 20 demonstrations and experiments for local elementary and intermediate students and they were wonderful at explaining the science behind their experiments. We were also joined by the robotics team who brought a robot to demonstrate for the kids. Everyone who came had blast learning about science. LADY HIGHLANDER VOLLEYBALL: Congratulations to the Lady Highlander Varsity volleyball team as they continue their post season success. The Lady Highlanders defeated Montgomery, Round Rock McNeil and Round Rock Westwood to advance to the regional tournament for the third straight year. The Lady Highlanders will face Highland Park today at 4:30 at Sam Houston State University for the Regional semi-finals. If the team wins, the Regional finals will be tomorrow at Sam Houston State University at 5:30 versus the winner of Richardson Pearce and Austin Westlake. Our season officially begins next Tuesday November 18th. We will be having a double header with the Girls Basketball Teams. On the Main campus our Freshmen Green and JV will play at 4 and 5:30 in gym 2. Then our Varsity will play in the main gym at 7pm. CHOIR NEWS: Poinsettia Sale ends November 18 - The Woodlands High School Choir is again selling beautiful poinsettia plants for the Holiday Season! This is a great opportunity to raise money for the Senior Scholarship Fund. Students can also earn funds for choir trips and activities. The proceeds for the first 10 poinsettias sold will go toward the Scholarship Fund. Proceeds for all poinsettias sold after that will go toward your student’s account. The profit for each plant is $5.00. Flowers may be ordered from choir members, or by contacting [email protected] Region Choir - Congratulations to the 47 TWHS Choir members who earned membership in the AllRegion Choirs. They will rehearse Friday Nov 21 and Saturday Nov 22, and present a concert on Saturday eve at 6:30 p.m. The concert is free and will be held at The Woodlands UMC 2200 Lake Woodlands Drive. TWHS Choir parents are encouraged to volunteer and/or donate items for this event and can find our more by accessing www.charmsoffice.com then enter the code thewoodlandschoir (all one word) and then your child's student id Pre-Area Auditions - On Tuesday, December 2, 25 students from TWHS Choirs will compete in the third round of the All-State Choir audition process. This audition determines who will compete in the final round for All-State in January. Best wishes to each of these students, and congratulations on their success to this point. Holiday Concert - The TWHS Choirs will present their annual Holiday Concert on Tuesday Dec 9 at Christ UMC 6363 Research Forest Drive, at 7:00 p.m. All of the choirs will present their own music, and the concert will conclude with the singing of some traditional carols. All TWHS Choir Students are required to come to the dress rehearsal on Monday Dec 8 from 3-6 p.m. at Christ UMC. TWHS BASS FISHING TEAM: Its tournament time again! This Saturday, November 15th, the TWHS BFT will compete among 11 schools and 42 boat teams at the second HHFC offshore tournament on Lake Livingston. Check-in will be at The Waterfront Lodge and Marina starting a 2:30. Weather permitting; boat checks will be held on the entrance road and sign in will be in front of the lodge. Official tournament hours are from 7am-3pm. Remember this is a trailering tournament so be sure to factor in travel time. Penalties will be given to anglers who arrive late. Anglers, be sure to dress in layers as well as rain gear because expected temps range in the low 50s upper 40s Saturday morning with a 30% chance of rain in the afternoon. For those competing in the Inshore Division, the next tournament will be held on December 6th, at Lake Paloma. TWHS fishing hours will be from 7-10 and McCullough will pick up at 10:30 and go till 12:30. As always we look forward to seeing friends and family come out to support and tight lines! WRESTLING: The first competition of the season for the varsity is this Saturday at 9:00 am at Cy-Fair High School. The team is competing against 7 schools in the region. It should be a good test for our team. The first meet for the Junior Varsity is Monday, November 17 at 6:00 pm at The Woodlands High School. We will be competing against other Conroe ISD teams. Come out and show your support for our wrestling team. Go Highlanders!!! TWHS ICE HOCKEY: The TWHS Ice Hockey team earned their sixth straight win last weekend and are currently tied for first place in the Interscholastic Ice Hockey League. TWHS (6,0) has 12 points and a game in hand with Cy-Woods (6,1) and Cinco Ranch (6,1) High Schools. Strong offence and defense has allowed the team to register an impressive 40 goals for, 7 goals against and the ISHL's lowest goals against average of 1.17. Six players are currently ranked in the top 25 scoring leaders for the league; on the scoring leaders list are Austin Guidot (2nd), Mitchell Sawyer (5th), Jack Greer (7th), Griffin Eatchel (11th), Preston Palamera (13th) and Ryan Kim (25th). Between the pipes, Graisen Eatchel (93.94 SV %) and David Hutto (89.36 SV%) are ranked 1st and 3rd amongst goalies in the ISHL goalies. In recent play, TWHS dominated Pearland/Friendswood High School with an 11-3 victory. Austin Guidot posted a season- high 7 points in a game with 6 goals and 1 assist and David Hutto kicked out 17 shots on net. Grif Eatchel (2 goals, 2 assists), Mitch Sawyer (3 assists), Nick Sieving (1goal, 2 assists), Jack Greer (2 assists), Ryan Kim (2 assists), Preston Palamera (2 assists), Jordan Reynolds (1goal), Isaac Babcock (1goal), Parker Tilson (1 assist) and Jonah VanderWerff (1assist) also contributed to the win. At the Willowbrook Aerodrome on November 2nd, TWHS blanked Brazos Valley 6 - 0. Mitch Sawyer registered his first hat trick of the season with 3 goals and an assist while Graisen Eatchel earned a shutout in net. Jack Greer (1 goal, 1assist), Grif Eatchel (2 assists), John Haldane (1 goal), Preston Palamera (1goal), Isaac Babcock (1assist), Grant Cannizaro (1assist), Olivia Hawes (1 assist), Jack Wurfel (1 assist) and Jack Hebert (1 assist) also added points for the win. The Highlanders have a busy weekend ahead with a game against Sugar Land at 8:15 pm on Friday night and against the Brazos Valley Bucks in Willowbrook on Sunday at 7:45 pm.
