LEO THE GREAT CATHOLIC CHURCH~~~2427 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17601~~~~JANUARY 4, 2015 “They opened their treasures and offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” (Matthew 2:12) We gather today in great joy as we have begun this New Year of 2015. We continue in our glorious celebration of our Christmas Season that will come to an end this coming Sunday, with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. And, we continue as a Parish Family in our 50th Anniversary celebration that also looks forward to later this year, when we will mark the 50th Anniversary of the opening of our Parish Elementary School. Today is the Feast of the Epiphany, this word which derives from the Greek word meaning “appearance or manifestation.” This Feast is connected to Christmas in a deep theological way, for while Christmas calls us to rejoice at our Lord’s birth, the Feast of the Epiphany brings us to celebrate the recognition of who this Child is; that He is the Son of God, the Promised Messiah who will save us from our sins. You and I are meant to be brought into this mystery of “God with us”. In fact, this is the symbolism of those Wise Men from the East who represent all of us, persons who did not belong to those first designated as God’s Chosen People, who are now offered salvation. These past days have been, as they always are for me, days of such great joy. It has been so wonderful for Father Pistone and me, as we have been touched by so many expressions of your love and gratitude for our Priestly Ministry. I especially have thought back, over these days, to nearly 30 years ago, when as a young lawyer in Lancaster, I would attend noon Mass at St. Mary’s, when I first got to know Father Pistone. How wonderful is God’s plan, that now, all of these years later, we are here together to serve our Parish Family. He has shared with me how he has felt so welcomed by so many since his arrival. We look back on this most special year. We thank God and all of you for the success of our Capital Campaign, and now we look to the expansion and renovation of our School which we hope will be completed later this year, when we mark the 50th Anniversary of its first day. We can only think of all the children who have come through that School, educated in the ways of our Catholic Faith, and wonder where they all are now, hopefully continuing to live that Faith in love of God and service to one another. Today’s Feast prompts us to think of the Magi, who, when they saw the star, put aside all of their earthly pursuits and daily responsibilities and engaged in that long and arduous journey in search of the Living God. May we do that too, in the depths of our hearts, and continue to offer all that we have to Him. Then, our journey will be a successful one, that leads all of us, we pray, one day to never ending life with Him. May God bless all of us, as we continue in this 50th Anniversary of our Parish, throughout 2015 and always. Happy New Year. Father Hahn 3 219 ST. Hahn’s earlier bulletin announcement, Bishop Ronald Gainer has given Saint Leo’s the go ahead to construct Phase 1 of our School Expansion and Renovation Project. Pending Final Municipal approvals and permits, Warfel Construction is planning to break ground in March 2015 for the 8 classroom addition. From May through August, the existing building will be renovated, and all construction will be completed before the return of students on September 8, 2015. This will give us larger, more modern, more energy efficient, and fully handicapped accessible facilities in time for the 2015-2016 school year. It is our goal as the Building Committee to keep you posted on progress of the fundraising and construction activity on a monthly basis. So, please look for monthly updates in the bulletin.
