LOOK, THERE’S THE CHURCH LOOK, THERE’S THE STEEPLE OPEN THE DOOR LOOK, THERE’S THE PEOPLE! and they look beaten down by life, and so very tired! You can see it on their faces, masks of half-‐living. Some wear masks of FEAR. Maybe they’re afraid of test results from the doctor, or that they are going to lose their job. Maybe they’re afraid that their kid is going to make a really big mistake and blow it. Maybe they’re afraid of growing old and losing their partner of so many years, and having to live alone. Or they’re afraid that they cannot pay their doctor’s bills, or their kids’ tuition. FEAR makes us feel tired and half-‐alive. Some wear masks of SADNESS. Sadness is the by-‐product of loss. It’s so hard to deal with the death of a loved one. It’s so hard to deal with a marriage relationship that has crashed on the rocks of infidelity or become lost in a sea of busy-‐ness. Sadness scars the young faces of kids who find it really hard to make and keep friends. SADNESS is the loneliness that makes us feel drained of energy, and only half-‐
alive. Some wear masks of ANGER. They are angry because life seems so unfair. Bad things DO happen to GOOD people…why? Good things seem to come to BAD people…why? Anger comes with the territory of disappointment. Anger oozes from the heart that cannot forgive a hurt, or shake free of a resentment. Anger is the feeling that looks at a messed up world and screams (at God, or at the walls) “WHY!” As we enter the season of Lent, we need to check the mirror and recognize which face we see in the mirror. Here at Good Shepherd, we are going to hear God challenging all the hurts and the problems that leave us feeling only half alive. Lent is God’s special season to cry into our hearts and into the heart of our community, “CHURCH…GET LIVIN!” Are we listening? Parish Events

Black and Indian Mission Collection to be Taken Up Next Weekend – Next week, our

parish will take up the 131 annual National Black and Indian Mission Collection. Our support of
this collection helps build the Church in African American, Native American, and Alaska Native
communities from coast to coast. Schools, parish religious education programs, and diocesan
ministries depend upon your generosity to help them spread the gospel of Christ.
There is an envelope in your monthly packet for this Collection. Please remember to bring
your envelope with you next weekend or at your earliest convenience. Your generous support
can go far in helping to meet the many needs of these communities

CHILDREN’S MASSES STARTING SOON
The 11:00 a.m. mass on the last Sunday of
each month, starting February 22, will be a
special ‘Children’s Mass’. Please note there
will not be a separate Children's Liturgy on
those Sundays at either the 9 a.m. or 11
a.m. masses.
EASTER CANDY SALE
Good Shepherd Parish is once again
sponsoring an Easter candy sale featuring
Gardners Candy. A color brochure and
order form will be mailed to you this week.
There are dozens of items to choose from,
including chocolate rabbits, filled eggs
pretzels, gummy bears, and sugar free
candy. Proceeds will benefit the General
Fund. You may also purchase candy to
donate to the Fulton County Mission. New
this year, out of town friends and relatives
can order candy, too. The letter included
with the brochure has instructions on how

Lent begins this week - Ash Wednesday is– Feb. 18 . In Pope Francis’
message on Lent, he tells us: “Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for
each communities and every believer. Above all it is a “time of grace” (2 Cor 6:2).
God does not ask of us anything that he himself has not first given us.” Making
Lent a time of grade, required preparation and choice.
One way to choose to live your faith is to become part of a small
group this lent. Small Groups are filling up, but many spaces are
still available, especially in groups that meet Monday and Tuesday
evenings. This is a comfortable and friendly way to deepen your
spiritual connections and live faith. See more information on the

No Faith Formation is being held this Sunday. Monday evening Elementary Sessions will meet on
Feb. 16, however, to make-up one of the sessions that we missed for bad weather.
Women’s Lenten Reflection: Feb. 28, Margie Meyers will facilitate a morning reflection on Living
the Pascal Mystery. Doors will open for hospitality at 8:30 a.m. and our reflection will begin at 9:00
a.m. and end by 12:30 p.m. The cost for the event will be $5. To facilitate our planning, please
register by Feb. 24. The originally-scheduled Women’s Retreat Day has been postponed because of
a health issue with the retreat leader.

Weekly Justice Challenge: 6 Week in Ordinary Time: This Sunday’s Gospel is
about the leper who touches Jesus’ heart. While leprosy isn’t rampant in our
communities today, many people suffer from the poverty of relationships which
lepers suffered in Jesus’ time. There are people in our own communities who
have no one who loves them except God. And they may not experience God’s
love because they have no human love to help them recognize God’s love. They
are the lonely, the alienated; some are scared, or angry or wounded. Your
challenge this week is to take the compassion in your heart beyond your
immediate circle of loved ones and extend that compassion to someone who is
alone. What can you do as a family or household to bring love into this person’s
live? And can you commit to making it more than a one-time act of kindness and care? How can you
continue to let this person know that he or she is not alone in this world, that God loves them, and that you
do, too?

Lenten Fish Dinners: Calling all bakers! We are looking for teens interested in
helping bake and sell individual dessert choices at our Lenten Fish
Dinners each Friday this Lenten Season. Proceeds will go to help
defray the cost of NCYC. Please email me and let me know if you

<><This Wednesday “Ash Wednesday” marks the beginning of Lent, a season of being invited by
God in a deeply personal way. “Come back to me, with all of your heart,” our Lord beckons. "We
will," we respond, but we aren’t quite ready yet, our hearts are not prepared. We want to squirm,
evade, avoid. Our souls not yet perfect. We are not ready for God to love us.
Yes, of course we want to have a deeper relationship with God, we tell ourselves earnestly. And
we will….Soon. God calls to us again: Come back to me, with all of your heart. What's the next
step on our journey home? We could take the earliest moments of our day, before we have
gotten out of bed to thank God for such a loving invitation and ask for help in opening our hearts
to it. That is the invitation of each day of Lent. Today is the day to accept it.

Visits to the Sick and Homebound:
Please be sure to call the Parish Office when you or someone you love is admitted to the
hospital and would like a visit. This may be the only way we get the information. If you have an
upcoming scheduled surgery, please consider requesting the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick
ahead of time. A perfect time to celebrate the Sacrament is after weekend mass.
Those who are homebound and would like to receive communion at home should also call the
parish office. Social visits, either at the hospital or in your home, can also be arranged through
our Visitation Committee. Please call Colette Orlandi at 692-7472.
Baptism:
Parents may prepare for the baptism of their new baby before he or she is born. For more
information or to register for this 2-part program, please call the parish office. The next sessions
will be held March 5 and March 12 starting at 6:30 p.m.
Reconciliation:
Confessions are scheduled on Saturdays at 4:15 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room in the Chapel
or by appointment.
Marriage:
Call the Parish Office at least 9 months in advance of your scheduled wedding date.
Funerals:
The parish is here to support the family in a time of loss. Please call the parish office.

Parish Registration:
We would like to meet you! You may drop by or call the Parish Office to begin the registration
process. Even if your stay in State College will be relatively short, you should register as a
member of one of the two local parishes or with the Penn State Catholic Center. Parish
membership has a special importance for Baptism and Marriage.
Hearing Impaired?
Pocket-sized units (with earphones) offering a direct link to the sound system in the church are
available for your use. The units can be picked up in the sacristy before mass.
