PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff, Students and Friends of St. Thomas’
Could the ‘selfie’ help us during Lent? The ‘selfie’ may provide yet another lens through which to view our
approach to the Lenten season, writes Monica Dutton.
It is estimated that worldwide, 93 million selfies are taken each day, and the fad is not limited to the younger members of
society. Indeed, the selfie was a recent Australian Prime Minister’s preferred method of relating to his constituents!
While many would view this egoistic preoccupation as a totally narrow and self-obsessed view of the world, there may
be something in this explosive ‘Gen Y’ trend for us all to consider over the coming weeks.
Lent 2015 may well be the time to take our very own ‘selfie’; the time to take a snapshot of our spiritual selves and to
critically examine ways to wholeness and peace.
The recurring cycle of Lent offers ever-changing opportunities for us to see things differently. Life’s experiences,
exchanges and encounters present new challenges, perspectives and ways of being.
Our approach to the cyclical nature of Lent therefore changes from year to year. The Lenten observances we undertook
as children or young adults make way for new patterns and practices as we progress along the spiritual path.
In the context of the Lenten season, the examination of our personal spiritual selfie requires us to look closely at our
lives in the light of the Gospel message and to contemplate what is missing; to invite the presence of God into our lives
and to discern the direction this awareness holds for us.
The idea of freely taking on something above and beyond the usual during Lent provides an opportunity to aspire to a
more Christ-centred existence.
Do our current practices contribute to our participation in a daily personal conversion to wholeness and holiness?
It is often easier to read books about spirituality and the lives of inspirational people for example, than to spend time
developing and nurturing our relationship with God through personal and communal prayer.
It is easier to give up red wine and chocolate than to turn away from hard-hearted or limiting actions and behaviours
which prevent us from becoming the best possible version of ourselves.
And it is easier to donate to charity online than to engage with people on the margins experiencing poverty, exclusion
and injustice in all its forms.
The conventional idea of “giving up something for Lent” now appears to be a short-term measure and somehow seems
to miss the point. Where there is such a clearly defined end point for personal change, there is a very real possibility of
regressing to our former selves as soon as the Easter eggs have disappeared. It minimises opportunities for authentic
spiritual growth and sustained conversion of life.
Critically reflecting upon our spiritual selfie during the days and weeks of Lent however, allows us to see where the
cracks are appearing; where we are less than our best selves and where we need to make permanent, life-giving
changes to our priorities and patterns of behaviour.
Rather than casually dismissing the much maligned selfie – perhaps it is time to go with the populist trend and embrace
it as a way to new perspectives for reflection during the Lenten season.

We continue in 2015 with our two major initiatives commenced last year – Kids Matter and Visible Learning.
Our Visible Learning characters tell us what qualities a good learner at St Thomas’ will show.
The next stage of our journey is making learning visible for our learners at St Thomas’. This occurs
through setting learning goals/intentions about lessons or units of work and sharing specific criteria
so that learners will know when they have been successful in the learning. We are taking small
steps as we move along this Visible Learning journey.
Through Kids Matter we are developing a school plan to implement a number of social skills/self
reflection/mental health programs across the school. As both of these major school initiatives continue
to unfold we will keep you updated.

APRE NEWS
th
This Friday, 13 March the Year Six school leaders will be holding ‘Rice Day’. This day fits with the
best practice fundraising model ‘From charity to justice’.
Step 1 is a charitable action: giving money or resources, so we are asking for a gold coin/s donation in
exchange for a small cup of rice.
Step 2 is awareness raising, this helps our students to understand issues that face the world’s poorest people, lack of
nutritious food is a major, major issue.
Step 3 is solidarity action; this helps our students understand what life is like for our brothers and sisters who are
experiencing poverty and injustice. Actions such as eating very simply help to promote empathy and understanding.
While we don’t expect our students to eat only a small cup of rice all day, you could make their other lunch simple and
maybe leave out the biscuits or treat if that is your normal practice. However, speak to your child about the day and the
reasons behind this action.
Step 4: Social justice action affects lasting change, it empowers participants to have their voices heard – it is
empowering our school leaders, they feel this is a most important activity; some are even giving up their lunch in
support. So please be generous with step one.
The Year six students will collect any gold coin donations from the classes first thing in the morning. Some very kind
parents have offered to prepare the rice, the Year six students will plate or rather, cup and serve. This will begin at
approximately 12:20pm with the Preps and Year One students, then moving on up through the year levels.
Thank you for your support financially and more importantly talking with your child about the issues of world- wide
poverty and just how very lucky we are here at St Thomas’.

PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS
As previously mentioned, Parent-Teacher interviews will be held for Prep – Year 6 during the coming weeks. Interviews
will be of 15 minutes duration. For these interviews we are using the internet-based booking system called Parent
Teacher On-Line (PTO). It will save time for parents/guardians, staff and students. Using this system you will be able to
book interview times from any internet-connected computer.
Please access the system as follows:
 Go to the school’s home page: www.stthomascamphill.qld.edu.au
 Click the PTO icon as shown here …
 Click “Obtain PIN/Password” and enter your email address. Your PIN will be emailed to you.
Full instructions are provided to you after log in. Please note the following points:

When you log on, the system displays only your own child/children. Bookings are made for individual
parents/guardians, not for couples. If two parents/guardians wish to attend a single interview time slot, one
parent/guardian should make the booking then both can attend.
3|Page

You will only see time slots that are available at the time you are using the system. As time slots are booked for
teachers, those time slots are no longer displayed as available. PTO prevents double-booking of teachers or
parents/guardians.

When you have made all the bookings you require, you can download or email a report of your bookings.

Other parents/guardians may be making bookings at the same time that you are using the system. It is possible,
though unlikely, that a time slot is displayed to you as available, but is then booked by another parent shortly
afterwards. If you then attempt to book this time slot it will not be available and a message will be displayed to
indicate this.
Please note this system will be available only from

LIBRARY NEWS
It has been a busy few weeks in the St Thomas’ Library as we farewelled Mrs Stewart and welcomed Mrs Gardiner to
our Library team.
A word from Mrs Gardiner…
Dear Parents and Guardians,
My name is Dominique Gardiner and I have been appointed as the Teacher Librarian two days per week replacing
Moira Stewart. I am absolutely thrilled to be working alongside Lisa Irwin and with your children. I have met many of the
classes and I have felt very welcome. I have spent the last two years working in Charleville, Cunnamulla and Quilpie
and prior to this I spent sixteen years as the Teacher Librarian at Mater Dei School, Ashgrove.
I feel a connection already with St. Thomas' as my father is an old boy of the school and both my grandparents and
parents were married in the church.
As a mother of four sons, I've experienced the joy of seeing our children read for pleasure for the first time.
I am passionate about children's literature and helping to ignite this spark.
I look forward to working with your children this year.
I can be contacted via the school on Mondays and Tuesdays or by email.
Dominique Gardiner [email protected]
Help Please
We are excited to have purchased and processed a range of new resources for the library since the commencement of
2015. There are many new fiction books and also a variety of new non-fiction books that support the Australian
Curriculum. We would really appreciate some assistance with covering these new resources. Mrs Henricks has put
together some covering packs that are available for collection from the office. If you are able to take a box of pre-cut
contact and books, we would be most grateful.
Check it out!
We’d like to direct you to our brand new, sparkly Library Blog. Have a peek; we’d love you to find out more about what
is happening in our St Thomas’ Library and Library Lessons.

Our swimmers will represent St Thomas’ at the Zone 2 carnival on Thursday, March 19 . Most swimmers have
returned their letter of permission. If you have not returned the letter please send it in tomorrow. The team will receive
their shirts on Tuesday of next week and their swim caps on the day of the carnival. We will meet again next week to
ensure that all swimmers are familiar with their races for the day. It is always an exciting day for our swimmers. We look
forward to having lots of cheering and supporting of the teams.
Motor Program
Thank you to the parents who have been able to come and assist with this program. Our Year 1 and 2 students love this
part of the day and show great benefits from the program.
Gala Day
All Year 4 to 6 students received a letter outlining the sports and venues for our Gala Day. These forms need to be
returned as soon as possible to allow for organising team managers for the day. It is very helpful to have a number of
parents managing/umpiring for our teams. This is especially so for our Year 4 teams for whom this is a new experience.
District Trials
The following district trials will be held for students of a high standard in the particular sporting field. Soccer for boys
(Memorial Park, Bulimba-Southside Eagles FC) on Monday, March 30 from 9.00-11.00am; and girls (Memorial Park) on
Monday, March 30 from 12.00-3.00pm. District cross-country will be held at Villanova Park on April 23 from 8.00am.
st
As we are having our school cross-country on May 1 , students will need to make a decision to compete based on their
own fitness level. We will have some cross-country training in the last week of school for all those interested.
If your child is interested in trialling for these sports, please ask them to see Mrs McAfee on Thursday at lunchtime to
receive the relevant paperwork. We do have a number of soccer players who play at a high level and may consider
trialling.
st
Inter-House Cross-Country has been scheduled for May 1 . To lead up to this day, cross-country training will
th
st
commence on Friday, March 27 and also Tuesday, March 31 . All students are invited to attend training. We will meet
in the area outside the tuckshop at 7.50am and move in a group to Perth Street Park for training.
