Page 3 Letter from the Executive Director Seattle Children's Home has a rich history of providing services to children, teens and their families. When I arrived at Seattle ChildrenвЂ™s Home in March 2006, I knew that I had joined a team of professionals dedicated to the successful future of Seattle Children's Home. I was also confident that despite the agencyвЂ™s recent challenges, we could look to the future with hope. Not only do we have hope for the future of the agency, but most importantly we have hope for the children and teens involved in our programs and services. As we look to the future and move forward, our hope is for excellence and efficiency throughout the organization. This includes our programs, how we deliver services, and our administration especially in the areas of human resources, finances, development and marketing. We will be focused on managing the short-term or daily issues while creating long term sustainability. We are just a few years away from celebrating our 125th anniversary. One of my goals is to assure you, our supporters and the community, that as we reach this milestone anniversary, we will be sustainable into the future. Our 125 year story of evolution and adaptation in recognizing the changing needs of children, teens and families deserves attention in both the here and now and assuring our viability into the future. I am delighted to be at Seattle Children's Home and look forward to getting to know and working with each of you as members of the community who share our passion for and commitment to children, teens and their families. Executive Director Letter from the Co-Chairs of the Board of Trustees HOPE has many meaningsвЂ¦ вЂ¦it is to feel that something desired may happen вЂ¦to look forward with confidence or expectation, to believe, desire and trust. For Seattle Children's Home, Fiscal Year 2006 (July 1, 2005 вЂ“ June 30, 2006) was truly a year of hope вЂ“ for the children, teens and their families who participate in our programs вЂ“ for the organization вЂ“ and for our employees and Trustees. For the children, teens and families we have the privilege to work with in our programs, hope comes in the promise of creating a successful life while living with a mental illness or developmental disability. Hope is the discovery of resiliency and embracing the skills for recovery. For the organization, 2006 was largely a year of stabilization and maintenance of our core programs while searching for a new executive director. We desired to hire a leader who is authentic, compassionate, and focused with a will to succeed. We are thrilled to have hired Gena Palm, Ed.D. Under her capable hands and steady leadership SCH is now in a terrific position for the future. Dr. Palm, came to Seattle ChildrenвЂ™s Home from New Jersey where she was the Executive Director at The Children's Home in Mount Holly. She has more than twenty years of experience working directly with children, adolescents, and their families. In addition to her experience as an Executive Director, Dr. Palm has held positions as a child care worker, cottage supervisor, foster care caseworker and foster care home finder/licensor, an individual and family therapist in both inpatient and outpatient settings, residential program coordinator, director of quality improvement, chief program officer, consultant and trainer. The masters level Counseling and Therapy Program professionals serve children and their families by providing individual, family and group therapy sessions. Parents who are concerned about recent changes in a son or daughterвЂ™s behavior or who seek ongoing support for a childвЂ™s diagnosis (such as autism, ADHD, or depression) may enroll their child, teen or youth at any time. Developmentally Disabled Behavioral Support Team (BeST) 2005вЂ”2006 in Numbers 133 children and families served. Average age: 9 years old. 84% indicated they had more information and tools to manage their problems as a result of participating in the BeST program. x 94% would recommend the BeST services to others in similar situations. x x x Parenting a developmentally disabled child can be rewarding, but it can also overwhelm. The BeST team helps families who are experiencing a behavioral crisis with their child and are enrolled in services through the King County Developmental Disabilities Office. Our masters level specialists implement a unique blend of comprehensive services that continue for up to 12 weeks. Their work results in positive and lifechanging interventions. Additionally, parents are welcomed at weekly alumni sessions to support each other through new challenges that arise. King County Juvenile Justice Liaisons 2005вЂ”2006 in Numbers Due to privacy protection laws, Seattle ChildrenвЂ™s Home does not survey or keep record on these clients. The liaisons work with variable case loads depending on the depth of services required. On average, each liaison in 2005-2006 Juvenile Justice Mental Health Liaisons are assisted in 25 cases each month. individuals who serve as a link between the juvenile court system and the mental health community. Our two skilled professionals consult with court staff on cases in which youth are experiencing mental health issues such as: depression, anxiety, ADHD, bi-polar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and adjustment disorders. Consultations may include various types of assessments. Seattle ChildrenвЂ™s HomeвЂ™s liaisons also offer referrals and resources that court staff can give to those youth and their families. McGraw Residential Treatment Center 2005вЂ”2006 in Numbers x 100% of discharged clients achieved one or more of their treatment goals. x 82% of discharged clients achieved three quarters of their goals or more, with 25% of discharged clients achieving all of their goals. The McGraw Residential Treatment Center cares for children with severe emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges. McGraw offers 24-hour comprehensive, structured services for adolescents and is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. McGraw is also licensed by the Washington State Department of Health. Page 7 Progr am Overviews Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST) The highly trained professionals of the Multi-Systemic Therapy program use a national model to reach children with a history of juvenile detention experiences. Funded by King County, the program serves children that are referred by 2005вЂ”2006 in Numbers court order. Very lit t le A lit t le Somewhat A lot Ext r emely Pediatric Assessment Center (PAC) The Pediatric Assessment Center(PAC) provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary assessment utilizing experts in psychiatry, psychology, and developmental pediatrics. Eligible children are selected from SCH programs or referred from the community; all clients come with insufficient, unclear, or disjointed diagnosis or treatment records. With a complete assessment, children and adolescents receive a comprehensive treatment plan and increase their likelihood for success. 2005вЂ”2006 in Numbers 24 clients вЂ” nearly a classroomвЂ™s worth of children вЂ” were assessed. Almost all received recommendations to change their treatment plan. Events Kerry Oliver Guild Luncheon Over 200 guests gathered to support Seattle Children's Home, listen to Cynthia Lair speak about the benefits of whole foods, and enjoy each other's company at the elegant Elliott Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seattle. This event was hosted by the Kerry Oliver Guild and supported by our generous sponsors, including Lead Sponsor Teutsch Partners Real Estate Services, Wyman Youth Trust, Linda & Paul Suzman, Unionbay, Jeff and Julie Schoenfeld, and Tiffany & Co. Maryhamilton Worm was honored at the event by her fellow guild members for her decades of service to children in our community. This event raised $49,000, making it one of our most successful events ever! (photo from left to right: Maureen Sharma, Janet Tupper, Maryhamilton Worm and Rena Ritchey) Other Events Throughout the year, generous supporters help us fund our mission-based work with children through events that they host. In fiscal year 2006 (July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006) such events were: UnRun: Queen Anne neighbors Sarah Lawer and Frank Guanco hosted a small block party/run event in honor of FrankвЂ™s birthday. Entrants to the run paid an fee, got a tee shirt and donated over $1,000 in cash gifts-in-kind to SCH. Cold Stone Creamery: For years McGraw clients have enjoyed tours of the Fremont Cold Stone, and the owners have come to understand the important work of SCH. So, when they were opening up a new Downtown store they immediately thought of SCH as a beneficiary of a portion of opening day proceeds from their Downtown store. Little Italy & Sign the Wines: David LeClaire, local sommelier and wineevents producer, found Seattle ChildrenвЂ™s Home when he was looking for a charity to support with an annual buffet of local Italian foods and Italian varietals of wine. Little Italy started with support from Apulant Events and has grown into an annual October gathering. In the winter, David produced another event called Sign the Wines that SCH was also fortunate to benefit from. Dr. Joan Kelly: In partnership with the University of WashingtonвЂ™s School of Law, SCH hosted Dr. Joan Kelly, noted divorce mediation expert to speak at a continuing education seminar. Rainier Summit-Ski: Former SCH employee Laura Pazemenas, an avid outdoors -woman, took on the amazing challenge of hiking up then skiing down Mt. Rainier. Raising funds from friends and family, who sponsored her, Lara raised over $2,400 in cash and giftsin-kind to support SCH.
