Purpose: To compare the intraocular pressure measurements obtained by the iCare tonometer with those
acquired using the gold standart, goldmann applanation tonometer, in individuals with PEX syndrome and healthy
volunteers.
Methods: Fifty five eyes with pseudoexfoliation and 49 eyes of healthy individuals were included randomly in
this prospective, controlled study. Slit lamp examination, gonioscopy and intraocular pressure measurement with
Goldmann applanation tonometer and with iCare tonometer were performed to all patients in both group.
Results: Mean age was 67.3 years in pseudoexfoliative group and 66.3 years in control group. Mean IOP
measured with GAT was 16.6 ± 3.1 mmHg in pseudoexfoliative group and 17.1 ± 2.7 mmHg in control group
and there was no statistically significant difference between groups (p = 0.657). Mean IOP measured with iCare
tonometer was 16.2 ± 3.4 mmHg in pseudoexfoliative group and 16.7 ± 2.9 in control group and there was no
statistically significant difference between groups (p = 0.368).Mean IOP with GAT was 0.41 mmHg higher than
iCare measurement in pseudoexfoliative individuals, and the difference was statistically significant (p = 0.044). IOP
with GAT was 0.32 mmHg higher than iCare in control group and the difference was not statistically significant
(p = 207). IOP measurement differences were highly correlated and this correlation was statistically significant
between GAT and iCare tonometer in both pseudoexfoliative and control groups (r = 0.902, p < 0.000; r =
0.801, p < 0.000; respectively).
Conclusions: We noticed that IOP values with iCare tonometer were significantly higher than GAT in
pseudoexfoliative eyes , the difference was statistically significant but in clinically acceptable range. The difference
of IOP measurements between GAT and Icare was not statistically significant in control group. IOP values
measured with iCare tonometer were compatible with standart Goldmann applanation tonometer.
