Hrvatski umjetnici na 28. grafičkom biennalu u Ljubljani
Grafički biennale u Ljubljani prepoznatljiv je likovni događaj s dugom, neprekinutom tradicijom. Već prvi biennale 1955. godine
zacrtao je smjernice razvoja i upisao Ljubljanu na svjetski grafički zemljovid. U popratnim tekstovima organizatora i teoretičara
objavljenim u katalozima biennala uvijek iznova pronalazimo razmišljanja o razvoju priredbe i grafičke umjetnosti.
razumijevanja s neprestanim i brzim tehnološkim napretkom.
s uvođenjem organizacijskih i sadržajnih promjena.
suradnju s biennalom i MGLC-om.

Croatian artists at the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Art
The Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Art is a recognized art event with a long and constant tradition. The first biennial in 1955 laid the
foundation for its further development and put Ljubljana on the world map of graphic art. The accompanying texts of organizers
and theorists published in the biennial catalogues contain contemplations about the development of the event and of graphic art.
It has been concluded several times that the event needs a change because graphic art and its understanding shifts quickly and
new dimensions of understanding are developed, accompanying the constant and fast technological progress.
Several small-scale changes have already been implemented. The most radical change is the change in the organization and
concept of rethinking graphic art that occurred in the ‘90s of the previous century. It was a time when Ljubljana played an important
role in the development of modern visual art by organizing different international exhibitions (Manifest 3) in this part of Europe. This
time was thus convenient for implementing changes in the oragnization and concept of the biennial of graphic art. Recognized
international exhibitions and continual biennials offered models for these changes. A basic revitalization of the event occurred in
two steps. The first step was dictated by the need to change the way the event was being organized. When the biennial became
an author’s and curator’s exhibition, it became comparable to other similar events in the world, thus easily guaranteeing the
involvement of recognized and famous artists, who before this, had never applied to the public call for the biennial.
The second step involved a gradual implementation of changes into the understanding of modern graphic production, which has,
to illustrate it simply, shifted from Dürer to Gutenberg. If we try to reconstruct these changes, we need not look further than the
changes in the appearance of the biennial catalogues. Until 1999 the biennial catalogue practically did not undergo any noticeable
interventions into its shape. It was not until the 24th biennial that some noticeable visual novelties were implemented, when the
catalogue appeared for the first time as an exhibition space intended for the artists who were creatively and artistically interested in
it. There is no coincidence in the fact that this was the exact catalogue in which the Croatian artist Maja S. Franković, whose work
connected to the book of artists and the rewarded installation by Ines Krasić appeared simultaneously with the implementation of
organizational changes in the content. The 25th anniversary of the Biennial of Graphic Art has continued the wave of changes
revitalizing the event. At the exhibition curated by Christopher Cherix, who is today the director of the Graphic Design Department
at MoMA – New York, an open call was extended to Ivan Kožarić. Furthermore, Ivana Keser presented her work in the daily
newspaper Delo, which showcased the exhibition. The most significant changes in terms of the exhibition’s locations happened
in 2005 when the biennial exhibition took place in the abandoned building of the tobacco factory Tobačna in Ljubljana. The 26th
biennial was covered by one of the Croatian printed media with the following title: „This year without Croatian artists“.
Ivan Picelj presented his work at the Biennial two years after that. Both eminent Croatian artists, Ivan Picelj and Ivan Kožarić
printed a number of graphics and graphic maps as part of the workshops organized by the Centre of Graphic Arts and thereby
completed a long-standing partnership with the Biennial and the MGLC (International Centre of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana).

biennalu u Ljubljani. Početak je to novog međunarodnog povezivanja i prepletanja informacija i umjetničkih iskustava. Umjetnici u
Osijeku sudjeluju s još jednim posve novim umjetničkim djelom te time nude refleksiju svog rada i svojevrsni pogled u budućnost
i razvoj vlastite kreativnosti.
jednakovrijedno umještena u modernu likovnu produkciju, prepletena s drugim medijima, inovativna, prepoznatljiva i specifična.

The last 28th Biennial of Graphic Art, at which seven young and strident authors presented their works, began a new period of
cooperation between the Biennial of Graphic Art and Croatian artists.
Some of them have extended their knowledge in graphic arts at postgraduate studies in Ljubljana, thereby establishing an important
connection, which now represents the starting point for a closer cooperation in the future. The artists come from three major
regional centres: Rijeka, Zagreb and Osijek, which have become major creators of fine arts life in Croatia in the last few years
and represent in this way a good model for widespread modern fine arts in Slovenia, which focused too much on Ljubljana as the
only real centre.
The idea and goal of the Days of Graphic Arts in Osijek is to present Croatian artists and the works they showed at the 28th
Biennial of Graphic Art in Ljubljana. It is the beginning of new international connections and interweaving of information and
artistic experience. Artists from Osijek also participate with a completely new work of art and thereby offer a reflection of their work
and a specific view into the future as well as the development of their own creativity. Selected artists are presented in Ljubljana
in different galleries. Pieced together, this composed a unique line of exhibition spaces around the main exhibition - the 28th
Biennial of Graphic Art.
Igor Eškinja presented in Ljubljana his work of art named Postproduction, to which he added a piece called Desktop in Osijek,
originating also from his interesting series of lambda prints which document specific conceptual exhibitions originally created in
the gallery.
Ivan Fijolić presented his sculpture installation Mel using the aluminum etching technique. He connected Holbein’s skull with a
portrait of Mel Gibson. The sculpture has to be viewed from a specific angle for the audience to be able to recognize the figure at
all. He added a wall installation Del to the mentioned piece of art.
Iva Kovač did a performance (Re)production in Ljubljana, during which she handed out copies of a poster depicting a newborn
child to the visitors at the opening of the Biennial. She recorded conversations of and with everyone who showed interest in her
poster and accepted it and documented this in a video which was later shown at the exhibition. She added a piece showing the
figure of Gaugin’s wife as it was shown – very differently – in two movies about his life.
Jelena Kovačić presented in Ljubljana her eight meter long drawing in one piece named Memories of well-brought-up girls 2. The
work’s fantastic expression and the ludistic figures set free the whiteness of the paper and arranged themselves as if they were
independent figures on a gallery wall, whilst preserving the distinctive intimacy and hermetic symbolism.
Ines Matijević Cakić reinterpreted the ancient myth of Penelope in a genre view using the technique of stitched drawing on canvas
and presented a modern woman and girl who symbolise the fading transfer of tradition and knowledge from generation to
generation. To this piece she added in Osijek a similarly made drawing in the stitch technique named Without a title – a piece
dedicated to Nola, which also shows a young woman playing with a doe.
Marko Tadić presented his work Envelopes in Ljubljana by filling up one gallery wall with envelopes depicting morbid sceneries and
transforming them into an impressive mosaic collection. His interest in drawings is visible in his Osijek work, where he used old
postcards and photographs. Through his minimal modern handmade photo manipulations he created an absurd world of a black
Moon and a golden Sun.
By publishing the Slovenian version of the tabloid Fucking a! Moreover, Ana Lozica made a big step towards globalisation and the
conquering of specific cultural and media surroundings, physical as well as mental ones. She grabbed the attention of the media
covering the exhibition in Osijek by literally baking a media cake to be eaten by the audience. In this way she symbolically ended
her media presence as she had created it.
The variety of artistic approaches, visible from projects created particularly for the exhibition in Osijek, demonstrates a wide
understanding of graphic media; it emphasizes the reproductibility as a quality and a characteristic, and it proves that the modern
graphic production is incorporated as an equal into the modern production of fine arts; it is interwoven with other media; it is
innovative, recognizable and specific.
