“Albatros Plus”
Although officially founded on 1 December 2008, the “Albatros Plus”
Publishing House is basically not a new phenomenon in Serbian
publishing. The company was set up by Jagos Djuretic, who was the chief
executive for many decades of the Filip Visnjic Publishing House and autor
of 4 outstanding books in field of political theory, together with his
associates of many years’ standing and editors at Filip Visnjic -- Professor
Svetozar Stojanovic, Slobodan Divjak, and Jovo Cvjetkovic.
As head of the Filip Visnjic Publishing House, Jagos Djuretic earned
the reputation of one of the best Serbian publishers. He was honored with
numerous public recognitions and awards and his publishing house was
several times voted publisher of the year in Serbia.
In point of legal fact, Albatros Plus is the successor to and
perpetuates the publishing legacy of Filip Visnjic achieved up to the time
the new company was set up.
In addition to the greatly renowned literary series Albatros (which,
incidentally, is the most-awarded series in the Serbian publishing industry
in the past two decades) and Talas, the company was especially identifiable
by its series of philosophical, legal, political, sociological, and journalistic
publications.
Those that especially stood out were Libertas, Eunomija,
Fronezis, Evropa, Hronogram, Istorije Drzava i Naroda.
These series
included for the first time Serbian translations of works by numerous
globally renowned -- both classical and contemporary - authors in the field
of social thought. Although it is unfair not to name them all, we will
nevertheless mention here only some of them by way of illustration:
Montesquieu, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, St Juste, John Milton, Pico della
Mirandola, John Stuart Mill, Thomas Paine, Hermann Broch, Max Weber,
Carl Schmidt, Franz Neumann, Urlich Beck, Isaiah Berlin, Hannah Arendt,
Alain Badiou, Marcel Gauchet, Norberto Bobbio, Claus Offe, and many
others.
As we have said, the co-founders of the Albatros Plus Publishing
House, apart from Jagos Djuretic, are Professor Svetozar Stojanovic,
Slobodan Divjak, and Jovo Cvjetkovic.
Svetozar Stojanovic is one of the most eminent Serbian intellectuals,
the importance of whose work transcends the boundaries of our country.
His philosophical and other works have been translated into 14 languages.
He was a distinguished visiting professor at numerous foreign universities,
including those in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and
Austria. At present, he is the president of the Belgrade-based Center for
National Strategy.
Slobodan Divjak is one of the
leading Serbian philosophers and
translators. So far, he has published six acclaimed books on social and
political philosophy and translated 30 works from English and German.
For many years, he was editor in chief of Radio Beograd Channel Three
and its publication of the same name. For several years now he has been
managing director of Radio Beograd and of the Zajecar-based Felix
Romuliana International School of Philosophy.
Jovo Cvjetkovic is another eminent Serbian intellectual and publicist.
