We learnt a while ago the word «τίποτα» (nothing) and we used it in a
double negative phrase.
Δεν βλέπω τίποτα
I don’t see anything
Δεν ακούω τίποτα
I don’t hear anything

Δεν καταλαβαίνω τίποτα
I don’t understand anything
Δεν κάνω τίποτα
I don’t do/make anything
Δεν ζητάω τίποτα
I don’t ask (for) anything
Δεν λέω τίποτα
I don’t say anything
We now answer the question «τι έχεις;» (lit. meaning, “what do you
have”? or “what’s wrong?” or “what’s the matter?”
You say : δεν έχω τίποτα
Τι έχεις Μαρία;
What do you have Maria? - What’s the matter Maria?
Δεν έχω τίποτα. Είμαι καλά.
I have nothing- I am well
The same word «τίποτα» is used in questions where in English you would
say “anything”.
Βλέπεις τίποτα;
Do you see anything/something
Όχι, δεν βλέπω τίποτα
No, I don’t see anything
Άκουσες τίποτα;
Did you hear anything/something?
Δεν άκουσα τίποτα
I didn’t hear anything
Είπες τίποτα;
Did you see anything/something?
Δεν είδα τίποτα
I didn’t see anything
Έφαγες τίποτα;
Did you eat anything/something?
Δεν έφαγα τίποτα
I didn’t eat anything

We have «τίποτα» for nothing or anything
The word associated with «τίποτα « is “κάτι»(something)

Στο αριστερό χέρι έχω κάτι. Στο δεξί χέρι δεν έχω τίποτα
In my left hand I have something. In my right hand I don’t have anything

Use «τίποτα» for things. For persons we use «κανένας»
(anybody/nobody)
Τηλεφώνησε κανένας;
Did anybody telephone?
Όχι, δεν τηλεφώνησε κανένας
No, nobody telephoned
«Κανένας» as the object of a verb becomes «κανένα»
Βλέπεις κανένα δέντρο;
Do you see any tree? (trees)
Ναι, βλέπω τρία δέντρα
Yes, I see three trees
Δεν πάω με κανένα
I don’t go with any (noun is a neuter)
Δεν αγόρασα τίποτα για κανένα
I didn’t buy anything for nobody
Ήρθε κανένα παιδί;
Did any child come?
Όχι, δεν ήρθε κανένα
No, no child came
Πήρες γράμμα από τη φίλη σου;
Did you take (receive) a letter from your friend (F) ?
Όχι, δεν πήρα κανένα
No I didn’t receive any letter
Andreas and Ellie speak and she is worried because her husband is late,
so she says to Andreas : «τι συμβαίνει;»
Or
Συμβαίνει κάτι; / συμβαίνει τίποτα;
Είναι κανένας στο σπίτι;
Is somebody at the house?
Ποιος είναι;
Who is it?

Είμαι εδώ στη κουζίνα. Έλα στη κουζίνα
I am here in he kitchen. Come to the kitchen.
Πως πέρασες σήμερα; Πολύ ωραία
How did you pass (spend the day) today? Very well
Άργησες πολύ. Γιατί; Πάντα έρχεσαι τις τέσσερεις και μισή. Τώρα είναι
έξι. Συμβαίνει τίποτα; Όχι δεν συμβαίνει τίποτα.
You were very late. Why? You always come at half past four. Now it is
six. Is something wrong? No, nothing is wrong
Είχα πολύ δουλειά σήμερα.
I had a lot of work today
Πως πέρασες το απόγευμα;
How did you pass (spend) the afternoon?
Πήγα στο σπίτι της Ελένης και μετά στο σπίτι της Γεωργίας.
I went to the house of Eleni and after to the house of Georgia
Δεν ήταν στο σπίτι καμία
“Were not at home any” (Neither were at home)
Μετά πήγα στην αγορά και αγόρασα κάτι για το σπίτι.
After I went to the market and bought something for the house
Τι μου πήρες; Όχι τώρα. Πριν από τα γενέθλια σου δεν βλέπεις τίποτα.
What did you “take me”? (buy me?) Not now. Before your birthday you
don’t see anything
Μια στιγμή. Άκουσες το κουδούνι;
One moment. Did you hear the bell?
Όχι δεν άκουσα τίποτα. Κάτι άκουσα. Κοίταξε παρακαλώ!
No I didn’t hear anything. I heard something. Look please!
Δεν είναι κανένας. Εντάξει. Ο καφές είναι έτοιμος.
It is nobody. OK. The coffee is ready.

I don’t know any family with twenty children
