Πιο πρόσφατα χρησιμοποιείται σμάλτο με βάση το γυαλί και παλαιότερα πολύτιμοι λίθοι, γυαλί και άλλα υλικά. Η διακόσμηση γίνεται αφού πρώτα γίνουν οι διαχωρισμοί (στα Γαλλικά ‘κλουαζόν’) στο μεταλλικό αντικείμενο προσκολλώντας λεπτές λωρίδες μετάλλου ή σύρμα στην επιφάνεια. Αυτές παραμένουν ορατές στο τελειωμένο αντικείμενο, κρατώντας διαχωρισμένο το σμάλτο που συνήθως γίνεται σε διάφορα χρώματα. Τα Κλουαζονέ αντικείμενα δουλεύονται με σκόνη σμάλτου που γίνεται σαν πάστα που πρέπει στη συνέχεια να ψηθεί σε κλίβανο. Η τεχνική αυτή χρησιμοποιήτο την αρχαιότητα κυρίως για κοσμήματα. Τα αρχαιότερα ευρήματα είναι δακτυλίδια σε τάφους από τον 12ο αιώνα Π.Χ. στην Κύπρο όπου χρησιμοποιήθηκε πολύ λεπτό σύρμα. (Αναφορά στον Δρ. Πανίκο Μιχαηλίδη). Η τεχνική Σαμπλεβέ διαφέρει από αυτήν του Κλουαζονέ στο ότι τα διαμερίσματα ή κύτταρα είναι σκαλιστά, χαλκογραφημένα ή χυτά πάνω στην επιφάνεια του μεταλλικού αντικειμένου. Cloisonné / Champlevé: Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metal objects. In recent centuries vitreous enamels were being used and in older periods also inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials. The decoration is formed by first adding compartments (cloisons in French) to the metal object by soldering or adhering silver or gold wires or thin strips placed on their edges. These remain visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments of the enamel or inlays, which are often of several colours. Cloisonné enamel objects are worked on with enamel powder made into paste, which then needs to be fired in a kiln. The technique was in ancient times mostly used for jewellery. The earliest surviving pieces are rings in graves from the 12th century B.C. in Cyprus, using very thin wire. (Re: Dr Panicos Michaelides). Champlevé is distinguished from the technique of cloisonné because the troughs or cells are carved, etched, die struck or cast into the surface of the metal object. (6) Starting Bid: €100 Estimate: €300-400 Niello, black metallic alloy of sulfur with silver, copper, or lead that is used to fill designs that have been engraved on the surface of a metal (usually silver) object. Niello is made by the fusion of silver, copper, and lead and then mixing the molten alloy with sulphur. The resulting black-coloured sulphides are powdered, and after the engraved metal, usually silver, has been moistened with a flux, some of the powder is spread on it and the metal strongly heated; the niello melts and runs into the engraved channels. The excess niello is then removed by scraping until the filled channels are clearly visible, and finally the surface is polished. The contrast of the black niello against the bright silver surface produces an attractive decorative effect. Objects decorated with niello, called nielli, are usually small in scale. The art of niello reached its peak in 15th-century Italy, in the workshop of the Florentine goldsmith Maso Finiguerra. Russian goldsmiths working in Tula in the late 18th century revived the craft, and niello work came to be known in Russia as Tula work.
