The Lykion Ton Hellinidon was established in London in 1979 and set as its
objectives the study, preservation, promotion and propagation of all aspects of the
Hellenic cultural heritage. In order to pursue our aims efficiently, we have created
separate sections which deal with the arts, folkloric music, dance and costumes,
publishing and the Young.
Over these years the number of pupils of all ages learning to dance has increased
significantly. Under the guidance of qualified teachers, they have been given the
opportunity to learn about our precious folkloric wealth and are able to perform
on stage dances, and enact traditional customs from all over Greece. We have
a valuable collection of authentic national costumes and it is our ambition to
acquire more.
Social events, organised by the Lykion during the year, are all manifestations of
our desire to make a contribution towards enriching the lives of our members and
of our British friends.

Το Λύκειο των Ελληνίδων ιδρύθηκε στο Λονδίνο το 1979 και έθεσε σαν στόχους
του την μελέτη, την περιφρούρηση και την διάδοση της Ελληνικής πολιτιστικής μας
κληρονομιάς. Για την καλύτερη διεξαγωγή των σκοπών μας, έχουμε δημιουργήσει
διαφορετικούς τομείς, που ασχολούνται με τις τέχνες, τη δημοτική μουσική,
τους εθνικούς χορούς, τις ενδυμασίες, τις εκδόσεις και την Νεολαία. Μέσα σε αυτά
τα χρόνια ο αριθμός μαθητών χορού όλων των ηλικιών έχει αυξηθεί σημαντικά.
Με την καθοδήγηση ειδικευμένων δασκάλων έχουν έρθει κοντά στα στοιχεία του
πολύτιμου λαϊκού μας πλούτου και είναι σε θέση να ανεβάζουν παραστάσεις με
χορούς από όλη την Ελλάδα. Η πλούσια ιματιοθήκη μας αποτελείται από αυθεντικές
φορεσιές, συλλογή που φιλοδοξούμε να αυξάνουμε συνεχώς.
Οι κοινωνικές εκδηλώσεις που οργανώνουμε κατά την διάρκεια του χρόνου, εκφράζουν
την επιθυμία μας να συνεισφέρουμε και να εμπλουτίζουμε τη ζωή
των μελών μας και των Βρεττανών φίλων μας.

Foreword
The Lykion Ton Hellinidon of London in its Diary 2011 presents a part of the collection
of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation. The design and publication of the diary
has been undertaken by the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia.
The PFF collections are many and some include unique examples of the neo-hellenic
culture. The emphasis is on dress and the recent sartorial trends. These last years
another 5000 unique collectable items were added to the collections through donations.
As president and founder of the PFF I welcome this important publication and express
my warmest thanks both to the Lykion Ton Hellinidon of London and the Leventis
Municipal Museum of Nicosia for the presentation of the PFF and its collections.
Our Foundation has and will always have close bonds of friendship and collaboration
with both Institutions.

Πρόλογος
Το Λύκειο των Ελληνίδων Λονδίνου στο Ημερολόγιο του του 2011 παρουσιάζει
ένα μέρος των συλλογών του Πελοποννησιακού Λαογραφικού ‘Iδρύματος. Την
καλλιτεχνική παρουσίαση και εκτύπωση του Ημερολογίου έχει αναλάβει το
Λεβέντειο Δημοτικό Μουσείο Λευκωσίας.
Οι συλλογές του ΠΛΙ είναι πολλές και μερικές αποτελούν μοναδικά τεκμήρια
του νεώτερου ελληνικού πολιτισμού. Έμφαση βέβαια δίνεται στο ένδυμα και
στις νεώτερες ενδυματολογικές εκφάνσεις μεσ’ από τη Μόδα. Τα τελευταία
χρόνια 5000 ακόμη πολύτιμα συλλεκτικά κομμάτια προστέθηκαν στις συλλογές
του από δωρεές.
Ως πρόεδρος και ιδρύτρια του ΠΛΙ χαιρετίζω το σπουδαίο αυτό εκδοτικό
γεγονός κι εκφράζω τις θερμές μου ευχαριστίες τόσο στο Λύκειο των Ελληνίδων
Λονδίνου όσο και στο Λεβέντειο Δημοτικό Μουσείο για την προβολή του ΠΛΙ
και των συλλογών του.
Το Ίδρυμά μας έχει και θα έχει πάντοτε στενούς δεσμούς φιλίας και συνεργασίας
και με τους δύο ως άνω φορείς.

Introduction
The year 2010 marks the 36th anniversary of the founding of the “Vasilios Papantoniou”
Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation (PFF). The first moves towards its creation had been
made in 1959, but official approval was not finally given until 1974. The PFF was founded
by Ioanna Papantoniou, a costume and stage designer, in memory of her father, for the
research, study, preservation, and promotion of modern Greek culture.
The PFF established an Ethnographic Museum and a Research Centre, with the following
aims: (a) to further the documentation and study of modern Greek culture; (b) to publish
and promote the research findings by means of exhibitions, books and papers and learned
journals; (c) to organize educational programmes and other events so as to introduce children
to the Museum’s various activities, with the emphasis on fun as well as learning; (d) to
arrange for further studies and refresher courses for specialists in the Foundation’s fields of
activity.
The V. Papantoniou Museum is housed in an early twentieth-century three-storey
Neoclassical building, renovated and converted for the purpose. Its collections started with
a donation from Ioanna Papantoniou. The first exhibition, “Peloponnesian Costumes”, was
located on the ground floor. The second permanent exhibition, which took place in 1981 and
was entitled, “The Production, Elaboration and Use of Natural Fibres in Greece”, generated
new ways of thinking about museology for all the small museums in Greece and many of the
large ones too. The PFF won the European Museum of the Year Award for this exhibition,
and also “in recognition of its contribution to research on modern Greek culture, the size
and quality of its collections, the educational and aesthetically innovative qualities of the
exhibition and the originality of the foundation’s educational programmes”.
In the research sphere, field projects were undertaken across the whole of Greece in the 1970s
and 1980s for the documentation and study of folk culture, music and dance, pre-industrial
technology and children’s games. The results of those research projects form the basis of the
PFF’s publications, the most important of which are the scientific journal Ethnographika,
which today numbers fourteen volumes, and the more recent journal Endymatologika, of
which the first three volumes have been published.
In 1983 the PFF published “Essai Sur La Chanson Populaire Grecque”, a book by the
distinguished Swiss ethnomusicologist Samuel Baud-Bovy with a foreword by Fivos
Anoyanakis. In the same year a set of two LPs was released containing music and songs
from South Italy and Sicily, the result of a research project by Lambros Liavas and Nikos
Dionysopoulos.
In 1985 the ten year ethnomusicological research project carried out in villages in Cyprus
was completed, and the album Cyprus Popular Music is due to be released on seven LPs: this
is a selection with a total running time of six hours. The musical supervision of the recording
was undertaken by musicologist Fivos Anoyanakis. The research project was prepared and
organized by Alekos Iakovides, a researcher at the PFF.
In 1989 the PFF founded ‘Stathmos’, the first Greek Museum of Childhood, in the engineshed of the old railway station at Nafplion. This is where the ground-breaking events and
activities for children take place.
In the same year Melina Merkouri, then Minister of Culture, transferred the National Archive
of Greek Traditional Costumes to the PFF. More recently, Ioanna Papantoniou founded the
Hellenic Costume Society as an offshoot of those Archives.
In 1999 the PFF celebrated its silver jubilee. The V. Papantoniou Museum was refurbished
and put on its third permanent exhibition, entitled “The Best of the PFF”, to illustrate the
breadth and variety of its collections, which by then numbered more than 25,000 objects in
22 different categories. These are all catalogued and classified by the pioneering Aristides
programme, developed by the PFF for the electronic cataloguing and management of museum
collections.
In 2006 the PFF celebrated its 32nd anniversary by reorganizing its exhibitions and the
Museum Shop. In “Stathmos”, the Museum of Childhood, children and artists created
installations with suggestions for improving the arrangement of the Museum. In the V.
Papantoniou Museum a fourth permanent exhibition was mounted, dedicated to “The Greek
Town: Nafplion 1822-1922”. In a showcase on the ground floor, an assortment of exhibits was
presented in a daring free installation to emphasise the varied nature of the PFF collections.
This was the museological approach that had already been adopted from time to time in the
Nafplion museum between 1999 and January 2006, and in the exhibition ‘Ptychoseis = Folds
and Pleats’ put on for the Cultural Olympiad at the Benaki Museum in 2004.
The years that followed have been a period of continuous reorganization and restructuring
of the PFF’s services. The acquisition of a three-storey neoclassical building next to the
Museum provided much-needed extra space: the Foundation’s well-stocked library and the
administrative offices and research facilities are on the ground floor, while the two upper
floors contain storerooms for the Museum’s collections and workrooms for conservation
and maintenance work. “Stathmos”, the Museum of Childhood, has also been reorganized,
through the generous donation of Nelli Yiannopoulou in memory of her daughter Margarita
with more rational deployment of the collections relating to children, shadow theatre and
puppet theatre.
In the field of costume research, greater emphasis has been placed on modern dress,
concurrently with the preparation and organization of the exhibition ‘Endyesthai (To Dress):
Towards a Costume Culture Museum’, which opened in the new building of the Benaki
Museum, Athens, in March 2010. The exhibition was based on the PFF’s costume collection,
the fruit of the collecting philosophy of its President, Ioanna Papantoniou, and covered the
development of fashion in Europe generally from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century.
The aim of the exhibition was to demonstrate the need for a Costume Culture Museum in
Greece.
The path taken by the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation since 1974 has earned it a
reputation as a notable pocket of national self-knowledge and a custodian of our national
and cultural traditions. Its multifaceted activities have made it the greatest small museum in
Greece. Today, it is imperative that the PFF continues to make its presence felt in accordance
with the standards it set for itself at its foundation. It now has 30,000 items in its collections,
which are constantly being enriched. The PFF marches on.

Το 2010 συμπληρώθηκαν 36 χρόνια από την ίδρυση του Πελοποννησιακού Λαογραφικού
Ιδρύματος “Βασίλειος Παπαντωνίου”. Οι πρώτες ενέργειες για τη σύστασή του είχαν αρχίσει
από το 1959, αλλά η έγκριση δόθηκε το 1974. Ιδρύθηκε από την Ιωάννα Παπαντωνίου,
ενδυματολόγο-σκηνογράφο, στη μνήμη του πατέρα της, με σκοπό την έρευνα, τη μελέτη,
τη διάσωση και την προβολή του νεότερου ελληνικού πολιτισμού.
Το 2010 συμπληρώθηκαν 36 χρόνια από την ίδρυση του Πελοποννησιακού Λαογραφικού
Ιδρύματος “Βασίλειος Παπαντωνίου”. Οι πρώτες ενέργειες για τη σύστασή του είχαν αρχίσει
από το 1959, αλλά η έγκριση δόθηκε το 1974. Ιδρύθηκε από την Ιωάννα Παπαντωνίου,

Με την οργάνωση ενός Εθνογραφικού Μουσείου και ενός Ερευνητικού Κέντρου, το ΠΛΙ
έθεσε ως στόχους: (α) Τη συμβολή του στην καταγραφή και μελέτη του νεότερου ελληνικού
πολιτισμού. (β) Τη δημοσίευση-προβολή των αποτελεσμάτων κάθε έρευνας με εκθέσεις,
εκδόσεις και επιστημονικές ανακοινώσεις. (γ) Την οργάνωση εκπαιδευτικών προγραμμάτων
και εκδηλώσεων για την εξοικείωση των παιδιών με τις ποικίλες δραστηριότητες του
Μουσείου, συνδυάζοντας τη μάθηση με το παιχνίδι. (δ) Την επιμόρφωση-μετεκπαίδευση
ειδικών στους τομείς που ενδιαφέρουν το Ίδρυμα..
Το Μουσείο “Β. Παπαντωνίου” στεγάζεται σ’ ένα ανακαινισμένο και κατάλληλα
τροποποιημένο νεοκλασικό κτίριο των αρχών του 20ού αιώνα, που αποτελείται από
το ισόγειο και δυο ορόφους. Οι συλλογές του Ιδρύματος συγκροτούνται αρχικά από τη
δωρεά της Ιωάννας Παπαντωνίου. Η πρώτη έκθεση πραγματοποιήθηκε στο ισόγειο του
Μουσείου και είχε θέμα “Πελοποννησιακές Φορεσιές”. Η δεύτερη μόνιμη έκθεση έγινε
το 1981, με θέμα “Παραγωγή, επεξεργασία και εφαρμογή φυσικών υφαντικών υλών”, η
οποία αποτέλεσε την αφετηρία για μουσειολογικό προβληματισμό όλων των μικρών και
πολλών μεγάλων μουσείων στην Ελλάδα. Για την έκθεση αυτή, αλλά και για την προσφορά
του στη μελέτη του νεότερου ελληνικού πολιτισμού, το μέγεθος και την ποιότητα των
συλλογών του, την εκπαιδευτική και καινοτόμο - από αισθητικής πλευράς - έκθεση και
την πρωτοτυπία των εκπαιδευτικών του προγραμμάτων το ΠΛΙ τιμήθηκε με το βραβείο
ΕΜΥΑ (European Museum of the Year main Award).
Στον ερευνητικό τομέα, στις δεκαετίες 1970-1980, περιλαμβάνονται έρευνες σ’ όλη την
Ελλάδα, με σκοπό την καταγραφή και μελέτη του λαϊκού πολιτισμού, της μουσικής και του
χορού, της προβιομηχανικής τεχνολογίας και του παιδικού παιχνιδιού. Τα αποτελέσματα
των ερευνών γίνονται ο κορμός της εκδοτικής δραστηριότητας του Ιδρύματος, με ξεχωριστή
την παρουσία της επιστημονικής επετηρίδας “Εθνογραφικά”, που σήμερα αριθμεί 14
τόμους και της νεότερης σειράς “Ενδυματολογικά”, που έχουν ήδη εκδοθεί οι τρεις πρώτοι
τόμοι.
Το 1983 εκδίδεται το βιβλίο του διακεκριμένου Ελβετού εθνομουσικολόγου Samuel BaudBovy “Essai sur la chanson populaire grecque”, με πρόλογο του Φοίβου Ανωγειανάκη, ενώ
την ίδια χρονιά κυκλοφορεί ο διπλός μουσικός δίσκος με μουσική και τραγούδια από την
Κάτω Ιταλία και τη Σικελία, αποτέλεσμα της ερευνητικής εργασίας του Λάμπρου Λιάβα
και του Νίκου Διονυσόπουλου.
Το 1985 ολοκληρώνεται η δεκάχρονη εθνομουσικολογική έρευνα σε χωριά της Κύπρου
και αργότερα θα κυκλοφορήσει το μουσικό λεύκωμα “Ελληνική Δημοτική Μουσική
της Κύπρου” σε επτά δίσκους. Τη μουσική επιμέλεια είχε ο εθνομουσικολόγος Φοίβος
Ανωγειανάκης. Την έρευνα προετοίμασε και οργάνωσε ο συνεργάτης του ΠΛΙ, Αλέκος
Ιακωβίδης.
Το 1989 το ΠΛΙ ιδρύει το “Σταθμό”, το πρώτο ελληνικό Μουσείο Παιδικής Ηλικίας, που
στεγάστηκε στο μηχανοστάσιο του παλαιού σιδηροδρομικού σταθμού του Ναυπλίου. Στο
“Σταθμό” εφαρμόζονται και τα πρωτοποριακά προγράμματα για παιδιά.
Το ίδιο έτος, ανατέθηκε στο ΠΛΙ από τη Μελίνα Μερκούρη, τότε Υπουργός Πολιτισμού,
το Εθνικό Αρχείο Ελληνικής Παραδοσιακής Ενδυμασίας, ενώ πρόσφατα η Ιωάννα
Παπαντωνίου ίδρυσε την Ελληνική Εταιρία Ενδυμασιολογίας, ως προέκταση αυτού του
Αρχείου.
Το 1999 το ΠΛΙ γιορτάζει τα 25 χρόνια λειτουργίας του και το ανανεωμένο κτίριο του
Μουσείου “Β. Παπαντωνίου” θα στεγάσει την τρίτη μόνιμη έκθεση με θέμα “Τα καλύτερα του
ΠΛΙ” και με στόχο να παρουσιαστεί το εύρος και η ποικιλία των συλλογών του, που πλέον
είχαν ξεπεράσει τα 25.000 αντικείμενα, από 22 διαφορετικές κατηγορίες, καταγεγραμμένα
και ταξινομημένα με το πρωτοποριακό πρόγραμμα ηλεκτρονικής καταγραφής-διαχείρισης
μουσειακών συλλογών “Αριστείδης”, που αναπτύχθηκε από το Ίδρυμα.
Το 2006, στα 32 του χρόνια, το ΠΛΙ γιόρτασε αλλάζοντας εκ νέου τις εκθέσεις του
και το Πωλητήριο. Στο Μουσείο Παιδικής Ηλικίας “Σταθμός” παιδιά και καλλιτέχνες
δημιούργησαν εικαστικές εγκαταστάσεις, προτείνοντας την αναμόρφωσή του. Στο
Μουσείο “Β. Παπαντωνίου”, η τέταρτη μόνιμη έκθεση αφιερώνεται στο “Ελληνικό Άστυ:
Ναύπλιον 1822-1922”. Στο ισόγειο, σε προθήκη, παρουσιάζονται ετερόκλητα μουσειακά
αντικείμενα σε μια τολμηρή ελεύθερη εγκατάσταση για να τονιστεί η πολυμορφία των
συλλογών του ΠΛΙ. Είναι η μουσειολογική πρόταση που παρουσιάστηκε στο Ναύπλιο
σποραδικά ήδη από το 1999 μέχρι και τον Ιανουάριο του 2006 και στις “Πτυχώσεις”, την
έκθεση της Πολιτιστικής Ολυμπιάδας του 2004, στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη.
Τα χρόνια που ακολουθούν είναι περίοδος συνεχούς αναδιοργάνωσης και αναδιάρθρωσης
των υπηρεσιών του ΠΛΙ. Η απόκτηση ενός διωρόφου νεοκλασικού κτιρίου δίπλα στο
Μουσείο, δίνει τη δυνατότητα να εγκατασταθούν στο ισόγειο η πλούσια βιβλιοθήκη
του Ιδρύματος και οι διοικητικές και ερευνητικές υπηρεσίες, ενώ στους δυο ορόφους
διαμορφώνονται χώροι εργασίας και αποθήκευσης μουσειακών συλλογών. Το παιδικό
μουσείο “Σταθμός” αναμορφώνεται εκ νέου, με την ευγενική δωρεά της κ. Νέλλης
Γιαννοπούλου στη μνήμη της κόρης της Μαργαρίτας, αξιοποιώντας ορθολογικότερα τις
συλλογές που αφορούν το παιδί, το θέατρο σκιών και το κουκλοθέατρο.
Στον τομέα της ενδυματολογικής έρευνας το βάρος πέφτει στο σύγχρονο ένδυμα,
παράλληλα με την προετοιμασία και τελικώς την οργάνωση τον Μάρτιο του 2010 της
έκθεσης “Ενδύεσθαι. Για ένα Μουσείο Πολιτισμού του Ενδύματος” στο νέο κτίριο του
Μουσείου Μπενάκη, στην Αθήνα. Η έκθεση βασίστηκε στην ενδυματολογική συλλογή
του ΠΛΙ, προϊόν της συλλεκτικής φιλοσοφίας της Προέδρου Ιωάννας Παπαντωνίου
και κάλυπτε όλη την εξέλιξη της μόδας στην Ευρώπη από τον 18ο έως τον 21ο αιώνα.
Φιλοδοξία της έκθεσης αυτής ήταν να αναδείξει την ανάγκη δημιουργίας ενός Μουσείου
Πολιτισμού του Ενδύματος στην Ελλάδα.
Η πορεία που διέγραψε από το 1974, ανέδειξε το ΠΛΙ σε σημαντικό θύλακα εθνικής
αυτογνωσίας και σε θεματοφύλακα εθνικών και πολιτισμικών χαρακτηριστικών. Οι
πολύπλευρες δραστηριότητες που ανέπτυξε, το μετέτρεψαν στο μεγαλύτερο μικρό
μουσείο της ελληνικής επικράτειας. Το σήμερα απαιτεί την παρουσία του Ιδρύματος με τις
ίδιες προδιαγραφές με τις οποίες είχε ξεκινήσει. Οι συλλογές του αριθμούν πια τα 30.000
αντικείμενα και συνεχώς εμπλουτίζονται. Η πορεία συνεχίζεται...
