A new cultural district is to open in the heart of Milan for the occasion of Design Week 2014: 5 VIE !
!
5 Vie is the oldest and most historic area of Milan. Walking in this area is like walking through the centuries and the history of Milan, surrounded by Roman remains, by museums, churches and historical buildings from Milan’s past, today connected for the Dirst time to the creative fabric of the city. !
!
!
5 Vie was created by the Associazione Networking Milano Giovani, in the persons of the founders Alessia del Corona Borgia, Emanuele Tessarolo e Andrea Clementi, and thanks to the support committee whose members are Monsignor Buzzi, prefect of the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Giuseppina Panza di Biumo of the Collezione Panza, Piero Maranghi from Classica TV and Fondazione Portaluppi, Luca Formenton, publisher of il Saggiatore, Bruno Soresina, president of SIAM Società di Incoraggiamento d’ Arti e Mestieri and Paola Albini, vice president of the Fondazione Albini, Eugenio Radice Fossati, entrepreneur. !
The project immediately found favor among institutions thanks to its goal of cultivating a metropolitan network, as the commissioner Tajani emphasized, with the ability to connect the creative fabric of the city to the historical zones of Milan that characterize the heritage of the city, many of which are directed by or are part of the municipality of Milan. As highlighted by the commissioner Filippo Del Corno, “the real signiDicance of the 5 Vie project is in the creation of unbreakable ties between the extraordinary creative energy of contemporary Milan and its history as a Dlourishing city.” Milan’s history, dating from before the term “creative” was even coined, is being rediscovered thanks to today’s creativity. !
During the FuoriSalone 2014, 5 VIE is to be turned into a new district with very high artistic and cultural value projected towards design and innovation and, at the same time, promoting cultural wealth in the area, as well as the tradition and high value of Milanese craft. A route is to unfold between the underway stops of Sant’Ambrogio and Cordusio which will stand apart from others by the importance of the cultural content as well as the excellence of national and international design. !
A triple circuit: -‐ showroom, stores and Oirms which display new design products, -‐ craft trades with the ancient craft workshops -‐ and a cultural itinerary made up of museums, churches, cloisters, archaeological sites, inner courtyards and special guided tours to discover a Milan never seen before. The Dirst event, number zero in 2014, is to be attended by around 35 concerns including design stores and showrooms, art galleries, collective exhibitions, street performances and special projects. !
5 VIE works with Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d'Arte Its schemes, aiming at a “new renaissance” of arts and crafts, target above all young people, to train new generations of art masters, saving prime crafts from the risk of disappearing which threatens them. To this end it promotes, supports and carries out a series of cultural, scientiDic and information initiatives. With the INMA, Institut National des Mé tiers d’Art, it is part of the international network of the European arts and crafts days. Thanks to the partnership with the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d'Arte, during the Design Week in the 5 VIE there will be an itinerary dedicated to excellent Milanese savoir-‐faire which will guide visitors in the discovery of around 80 craft workshops located in this area. This itinerary will be active already from 4 April, at the same time as opening of the international network of European arts and crafts days. http://www.fondazionecologni.it/FCMA/index.php?id=1 http://giornatedeimestieridarte.it/ !
5 vie collabora con SIAM, Società di Incoraggiamento d’ Arti e Mestieri and with the Albini Foundation for dissemination of the culture of design L’aula magna del SIAM ospiterà una conferenza su Franco Albini a cura della Fondazione Albini: From plan to public work: the methods of Franco Albini Design by Franco Albini is supported by ideas that make his work extremely timely 70 years after their conception. Marco and Paola Albini will discuss these ideas in the auditorium at SIAM. Friday, April 11 at 6pm Via Santa Marta 18, 20123 Milano !
La Società di Incoraggiamento d’arti e Mestieri hosts for the occasion the photographer Giovanni Hä nninen with SOUND VISION, curated by Roberta Reineke, plus the painter Dario Maglionico with REIFICAZIONE#, curated by Filippo Ciavarella, and the artist Andrea Fiorino with ANOTHER PLACE, curated by Daniele Piparo. 5 VIE co-‐produces Baas is in town By Maarten Bass, in collaboration with Ventura Projects !
c/o Via Zecca Vecchia 3, corner via Fosse Ardeatine near by P.za San Sepolcro !
Maarten Baas The Dutch designer, a pioneer of art design who has modernized contemporary designer Digure sculpture, will present in Milan a show– not just an exhibit-‐ physically and visually expressing the design method that characterizes his investigations and the exceptional everyday reality of his studio through Dirsthand experience. The designer, or sculptor, or perhaps researcher, will transfer his own studio-‐laboratory-‐ or even better, atelier-‐ to Milan, to the beautiful space owned by Fondo Immobiliare -‐ Comune di Milano II managed by BNP Paribas REIM SGR. Since Maarten Baas debuted with Smoke in 2003, he made an impressive sequence of solo exhibitions during the Design Weeks in Milan. Every year he surprised the design audience with his experimental and intuitive style, always an unexpected and relevant statement in the moment of time. In 2014, Dive years after his last big show Real Time, he will come back in in a 600m2 hall in the centre of Milan. Maarten Baas: “there’s a Dine line, and only one letter difference, between “Show” and “how”. We’ll be playing with the difference between both. You can count on a spectacular, entertaining, great, unforgettable and marvelous Show, although we don’t know yet How...” It will be a solo exhibition, in which many collaborations are integrated. The main part of the exhibition will be improvised on the spot. Baas shows original collaborations with established designers such as product designer Bertjan Pot, and fashion designer Walter van Beirendonck and including artists from a total different background, like Teun Hocks and John Körmeling. These collaborations are supported by the Central Museum in Utrecht. The Koopgoot collection is Baas’ newest works for the public space. For the so called “Koopgoot”, the main shopping street in the centre of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Maarten Baas was commissioned to make unique furniture, especially made for this location. It will be placed in Rotterdam in May 2014, but in Milan a preview of this work will be shown in Baas’ exhibition in Milan. All works will be presented in a theatrical setting, in collaboration with Theatre Group De Kwekerij, with director Joris van Midde.
The exhibition will include new works for Carpenters Workshop Gallery. Since 2007 Baas worked regularly with Carpenters Workshop Gallery. Besides the solo exhibition, there will be smaller exhibitions of companies and designers that are somehow connected to Maarten Baas and his works: Of course there will be Den Herder Production House, presenting new works by Max Lipsey, Bertjan Pot and Nightshop. And there are various small presentations by emerging designers like Aart van Asseldonk, Niels Schuurman, Kazoe van den Dobbelsteen, Erik Vermeulen and Suzanne van der Aa. !
Gnam Box Café c/o Wait and See, Via Santa Marta 14 A social foodie project that speaks through food. Gnam Box is a place for keeping our passions. The focus is on meeting inspirational people using the social power of the Web. Our kitchen has become the symbol of this conviviality and of these meetings. We welcome inspirational people into the Gnam Box kitchen, inviting them to prepare and cook food. Food reveals a lot about people and we like to learn more about a person through their food habits, their favourite ingredients and any food tips they have to offer us and our followers. The Dirst thing we want to know about you is: what's your favourite dish? Food makes everyone equal and makes it easier to talk about ourselves and to feel at home. In food we trust and our recipes tell you everything about us! !
The Gnam Box Kitchen during the 2014 Milano Design Week is to become a temporary public space: the Gnam Box Cafè . This place will offer the opportunity for taking a break from the "design week routine" to have a coffee, recharge your batteries, have a breather and chat with us and our guests. We will schedule a Designer Breakfast, Afternoon Chat&Eat, Midnight Snack and other events in order to have the chance to talk with interesting people. Every day will see different people, different points of view. Food will be the inspiration to start talking about everything, because we want to discuss design, but in a welcoming place, where everyone can feel at home, with friends. !
Street Food & Design, Gnam Box for Via Spadari with various activities in Via Spadari In collaboration with 5VIE, Gnam Box presents a program illuminating the distinctiveness of Via Spadari, with Milan’s most important event, Design Week, as the backdrop. Via Spadari transforms into a culinary and design center, a project linked to the actuality of the street, with the synergy between food and design coming into focus. Every participating location will present a dish or a product that represents and characterizes it, serving it in a street food style to suit the pace of visitors to design week. Each event will be paired with a designer who will interpret the place though his or her own creative art using the windows and interior space for display. 5 VIE presents MISIAD_MilanoSi Autoproduce Design [Milan auto-‐produces design] DesignOFFsite
MISIAD_Milano Si Autoproduce Design, is a non-‐proDit-‐making association founded in 2011 by Camillo Agnoletto, Laura Agnoletto, Cesare Castelli and Alessandro Mendini with the aim of promoting digital craft and Milan as the international capital of the auto-‐production of design. Misiad provides a space and platform for small Dirms of creative excellence who invent and map out new languages for design. Misiad conceived of DesignOFFsite, a project curated by Laura Agnoletto, which calls for design "invasions" of shop windows that otherwise have no relationship to the design world. Participants include known designers, some very well-‐renowned Digures, and young people fresh from design school such as Alessandro Mendini, Basil Green Pencil, Luca Scacchetti, Anna Gili, Felipe Cardena, Studio Baag, Ludek Lancellotti, AlifDi Guido, Alessandro Guerriero, Salvatore Franzese, Coquelicot MaDille and many others. They have created a pedestrian tour starting from via San Maurilio, and continuing to via S. Marta, Piazza Mentana, via del Torchio, via Caminadella via Lanzone, and ending at Via Gian Giacomo Mora. The idea is to impart the feeling that mystery is present in our daily lives, bringing the visitor to a deeper reading of design objects beyond their aesthetics and their function. E Il Topo Il Mostro E Il Topo Via Bagnera Performance by the E Il Topo movement and launch of the manifesto. From dawn to dusk and from dusk to dawn. The artists of the E IL TOPO magazine, intending to set up a movement with manifesto, have chosen for their headquarters a forgotten alley in the centre of Milan, with a disturbing history. The street is narrow and almost deserted, very central yet dominated by a sense of abandonment. It is almost completely “frescoed” with grafDiti, a chaotic layer of signs, colours and words. Working here means taking on board the history of the street which became sadly famous as the home of a serial killer, Antonio Boggia, the “monster of via Bagnera”, arrested in 1861 and sentenced to death (the last death sentence for a civilian carried out in Milan). The derelict state of the street may stem from the sad story of this criminal. Via Bagnera, Milan 20123 April 8 – 13, 2014, sunrise to sunset Performance 9th April 6 pm www.eiltopo.org !

Dutch Design for a New City Garden Giardino del Terraggio, via Terraggio, Milan GREEN ISLAND presents a project dedicated to a new concept of green urban spaces with works by innovative designers and artists, including the well-‐known Dutch landscape designer Piet Oudolf. LANDSCAPING. Dutch Design for a New City Garden, devised for Milano Design Week 2014 by the cultural design studio aMAZElab/
Claudia ZanDi, is a programme dedicated to a new concept of green urban spaces. It is inspired by the good Dutch example, housing the Dirst photography exhibition by the landscape master Piet Oudolf and promoting innovative and sustainable urban actions through the work of young artists and designers. Landscaping sets out to spread new styles of living and of urban socialising through a contemporary design of parks, gardens and other public spaces. It also presents an exclusive project on biodiversity by the Bee Collective, which combines design and ecosystem. With the addition of exhibitions, installations and bike tours, the programme intends to offer inspiration for the design of the urban landscape in order to bring the city back to a human level. !
