LA SPIAGGIA PERFETTA PER TE... • Natura
Dal centro di Sirolo si può scendere per una strada lunga un km
e raggiungere la Spiaggia Urbani
che, con la sua forma a mezzaluna, si inserisce in un magnifico
scenario delimitato da una grotta
e una rupe di roccia bianca.
Sempre a Sirolo, percorrendo il
sentiero del Parco della Repubblica
si arriva nella rilassante natura
della Spiaggia di San Michele,
un’immensa spiaggia di ghiaia
fine e sassi, in parte libera e in
parte attrezzata. Da qui potete
poi raggiungere l’adiacente
Spiaggia dei Sassi Neri il cui
nome deriva da alcune rocce scure che si intravedono nei fondali.
From the centre of Sirolo you can
descend along a one km long road
which leads to Spiaggia Urbani. It has
a lovely crescent moon shape, and
is surrounded by exquisite scenery
bordered by a cave and a cliff.
Also in Sirolo, if you follow the path of
the Republic Park you will reach the
relaxing nature of the Spiaggia di San
Michele, a wide beach with fine gravel
and rocks, part wild beach and part
bathing establishment.
From here you can reach the adjacent
Spiaggia dei Sassi Neri whose name
derives from the dark pebbles which
characterize it.

Per gli amanti della natura / For nature lovers
Per una giornata nel cuore della
natura lontani dalla vita da ombrellone sono due le mete consigliate: la Spiaggia delle Due
Sorelle che prende il nome dai
bianchi faraglioni che spuntano
tra le onde e l’adiacente Spiaggia dei Gabbiani. Quest’ultima
tra i suoi bianchi massi nasconde
i resti della Grotta degli Schiavi
dove si dice che un ammiraglio
saraceno lasciasse i suoi schiavi.
Entrambe sono raggiungibili solo
via mare.
If you want to spend the day
surrounded by nature, far from
umbrellas and bathing establishments,
we recommend two destinations: the
Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle which takes its name from the white sea-stacks
rising out of the waves and the
adjacent Spiaggia dei Gabbiani.
Between its white boulders, the latter
conceals the remains of the Grotta
degli Schiavi where, as the story goes,
a Saracen admiral sorted his slaves.
Both may be reached only by sea.

Portonovo famosa per la natura
incontaminata e la bellezza delle
sue spiagge è immersa in una
baia verde. Qui si susseguono
spiagge selvagge e stabilimenti
balneari attrezzati, l’arenile è in
ghiaia e sassi. Alcune spiagge,
per l’esposizione a particolari
venti, sono diventate la meta
prediletta dai surfisti.
Camminando in riva al mare potrete incontrare insolite sculture
di sassi in equilibrio che ricordano
primitivi totem: sono opera degli
artisti di stone balance disciplina
che a Portonovo ha trovato la
sua patria tanto che ha ospitato
il primo raduno internazionale di
quest’arte.
Portonovo famous for its unspoilt
nature and lovely beaches is
surrounded by a green bay. Here you
will find a succession of wild beaches
and bathing establishments, with a
pebbly, rocky shore. Some beaches
are the preferred destination of
surfers on account of its exposure to
particular currents. Walking along the
seashore you will discover unusual
balanced rock sculptures which are
reminiscent of primitive totem poles:
they are the work of stone balance
artists, a discipline which has found its
home in Portonovo, so much so that
the first international convention of
this art form was held here.

Per i veri amanti del mare e per
coloro che sognano una giornata
più avventurosa, la spiaggia
ideale è Mezzavalle, una baia
completamente immersa nella
natura del Parco del Conero tra
Ancona e Portonovo. 15 minuti
di un ripido stradello nel verde
conducono in una delle spiagge
più suggestive del Conero. A
Mezzavalle non ci sono ombrelloni e lettini ma solo un piccolo
bar/ristorante; i bagni e le docce
sono pubblici.
NUMANA:
SPIAGGIA
DEL FRATE
Tra Numana e Sirolo, a nord del
porticciolo turistico, raccolta in
una baia naturale e sovrastata da
una scogliera si trova la Spiaggia
del Frate. Una spiaggia di ghiaia
in parte libera ed in parte attrezzata, un piccolo gioiello dove trascorrere una giornata cullati solo
dal rumore del mare turchese.
In the high part of Numana, just north
of the small, tourist port, we find the
Spiaggia del Frate. Enclosed by a
natural bay and dominated by a cliff,
this bathing establishment with fine
gravel, is a small jewel where you can
spend the day lulled with the sounds
of the turquoise sea.
The ideal beach for true sea lovers and
for those who dream of an adventurous
day is Mezzavalle, a bay completely
surrounded by Conero Park, located
between Ancona and Portonovo.
A fifteen minute walk up a steep road
surrounded by greenery brings you
to one of the most evocative beaches
in Conero. There are no umbrellas or
sunbeds in Mezzavalle, just a small
bar/restaurant; the beach has public
toilets and showers.

A pochi passi dal centro di Numana Alta si trova La Spiaggiola,
una spiaggia attrezzata di ghiaia
e fondali sabbiosi. Un luogo intimo e raccolto, protetto alle spalle
dalle pendici del Monte Conero
e affacciato su un mare particolarmente calmo grazie agli scogli al
largo che fanno da frangiflutti.
Proseguendo poi verso sud
si giunge a Numana Bassa,
piccolo golfo, un tempo borgo
di pescatori, dove sfila un vivace
susseguirsi di spiagge attrezzate
e libere. Ancora più a sud si trova
Marcelli, una località caratterizzata da un tratto di costa in ghiaia
e sabbia dorata lungo circa 6 km
con ogni servizio dai ristoranti
alle strutture sportive, ideale per
bambini e famiglie.
Poco prima di entrare nel centro
di Porto Recanati si incontrano
le spiagge di Scossici con ampie
distese di ghiaia, il luogo ideale
dove dedicarsi allo sport in riva al
mare o per rilassarsi coccolati dal
sole. Le spiagge di Porto Recanati, di fronte al centro cittadino,
regalano una magnifica visione
del Monte Conero con una colorata fila di stabilimenti balneari
che si estende fino alle spiagge
della zona Pineta a sud del fiume
Potenza.
Just a stone’s throw from Numana
Alta we find La Spiaggiola, a
bathing establishment with a pebbly
beach and sandy sea floor. This is an
intimate, secluded spot, sheltered
by the slopes of Mount Conero and
overlooking a particularly calm sea,
thanks to the offshore rocks which act
as a breakwater. Continuing south
we reach Numana Bassa, a small
gulf once fishing village, with a lively
succession of bathing establishments
and wild beaches.
Further south we find Marcelli,
an area with a stretch of coastline
approximately 6 kilometres in length,
characterized by pebbles and golden
sand. This beach is ideal for families
and children as it has every service,
from restaurants to sports facilities.
A short distance from the centre of
Porto Recanati we find the beaches
of Scossici with wide stretches of
pebbles. This is the ideal location to
engage in sports along the seashore
or relax in the sunshine.
The beaches in front of Porto Recanati
grant a magnificent view of Mount
Conero with a row of brightly-coloured
bathing establishments which extend
all the way to the Pinewood, in the
area south of the river Potenza.

è la spiaggia del Passetto
di Ancona, un’oasi naturale
nascosta tra le rocce al di sotto
del monumento dei caduti,
a pochi passi dalle centrali vie
dello shopping. Ideale per un
bagno veloce in pausa pranzo
e per una serata in qualche locale
su palafitte.

Another unique beach set in the town
centre is the Passetto di Ancona
beach, a natural oasis concealed
between the rocks beneath the war
memorial, just a stone’s throw from
the main shopping streets. This is the
ideal location for a quick swim during
your lunch break or for an evening
spent in a pub on stilts.
Due sono le spiagge che possono per legge ospitare i cani, di
qualsiasi taglia:
- La prima è un tratto di spiaggia
posizionato a sinistra della foce
del Fiume Musone nel lungomare
nord di Porto Recanati.
- La seconda si trova invece
nell’estremità opposta di Porto
Recanati, nel lungomare sud,
all’altezza del fiume Potenza.
Entrambe le spiagge sono libere
e vige l’obbligo di tenere i cani al
guinzaglio.

is a place of rare beauty extending
across the municipalities of Ancona,
Camerano, Numana and Sirolo.
It lies on a stretch of the coastline and
over an extensive hillside, offering
unique scenic views and a historical
atmosphere, Mount Conero, at an
altitude of 572 meters and rising directly from the sea, is part of a unique
promontory that extends from Trieste
to Gargano.
The presence of abandoned caves
transforms the Park into an open book
of geologicalhistory encapsulating
the stratigraphical succession of the

Not far from Sirolo, in the luxuriant
greenery of the Conero Park, we find
the Conero Golf Club: an expanse
measuring approximately 70 acres.
There is an 18-hole championship
course and a 5-hole executive course
surrounded by a large forest of oaks,
tamarisks, cherry trees and Scotch
broom. Panoramas of unique
grandeur accompany the player
through the six thousand meters of
relaxation and fun. The Conero Golf
Club can be a valid alternative to
typical afternoons even if you do not
play golf: go for a relaxing swim in
the pool, enjoy a cocktail at the bar or
engage in a tennis match in one of the
two fields housed within the facility.

Scuba diving has never been easier,
just put on your snorkel and fins and
venture out to discover underwater
marvels: rocky faces, shallows and
sea beds rich in flora and fauna.
There are over 60 species of colourful
nudibranch, magnificent specimens
of decorator crab, a multitude
of crustaceans of every sort and
countless demersal fish, such as
needlefish and seahorses.
The area is renowned amongst
snorkelling enthusiasts, but even
amateurs can enjoy these lovely sea
beds thanks to the many snorkelling
courses available.

setting off to discover wild coves or
reach stretches of coastline by sea,
and in the Conero Riviera there are

There are organized ferry tours which
depart from the Numana port, but
there are also other options which
guarantee greater autonomy.
You can choose to rent a canoe for a
perfect combination of adventure and
sport or ride the waves on a boat or

degustazione di olio extra vergine di oliva.

una semplice fetta di pane nella
protagonista di un pasto.
In diverse località del Conero ci
sono aziende agricole dove potrete acquistare dell’ottimo miele,
con la garanzia della qualità che
solo i prodotti naturali possono
offrire. Caratteristico del territorio
è poi il Pane delle Terre del Conero, riconoscibile dall’apposito
marchio; un pane a lievitazione
naturale, ottenuto grazie all’acidificazione spontanea di acqua,
farina e corbezzolo - frutto tipico
della zona - e preparato secondo
una particolare ricetta che ben si
sposa con una cucina locale.

recommend you indulge in an extravirgin olive oil tasting. Local production brings to the table
a much sought-after quality product
which can transform a simple slice of
bread into the star of the meal. There
are commercial farms in various areas
of Conero where you can purchase
excellent honey, and other bee derivatives, with the quality assurance which
only natural products can offer. The
Pane delle Terre del Conero (bread
of the Conero lands) is a traditional
bread made with natural leavening –
obtained from the arbutus, a characteristic local fruit – prepared according
to a special recipe which marries well
with the local cuisine.

Basilica di Loreto dove è custodita la
Santa Casa della Madonna. Raccogliersi in
preghiera tra le mura di questa umile dimora
o semplicemente respirare la spiritualità che
trasuda da questo luogo è un’esperienza da
non perdere.
On the Marchigian hills looms the imposing Basilica
of Loreto which houses the Holy House of the
Madonna. Gathering in prayer within the walls of
this humble abode, or just breathing in the spirituality
this place exudes, is a worthwhile experience.
LORETO: Secondo Santuario Mariano dopo Lourdes per presenza di pellegrini.
Conserva al suo interno la Santa Casa di Nazareth e la Statua della “Madonna
Nera”, patrona dell’aviazione e dei viaggiatori in aereo.
LORETO: Loreto is the second destination for pilgrims after Lourdes. The Basilica
contains the Holy House of Nazareth and the statue of the Black Madonna,
protectress of aviation and air travellers.
PORTO RECANATI: La Chiesetta della Banderuola sorge nella zona in cui nel
1294 sostò per la prima volta la “Santa Casa della Madonna” nella sua traslazione
in Italia.

POTENZA PICENA: Un tempo all’interno del centro storico vi erano ben 28
chiese, molte oggi sono scomparse. La Collegiata, chiesa dei gesuiti conserva
molte pregevoli tele e arredi sacri. La Chiesa di San Giacomo nel versante sud
del centro storico, in piazza Matteotti la Chiesa di Sant’Agostino.

through the centuries many of them were destroyed. The Collegiata,
Jesuits Church, houses many paintings and sacred fornitures. The Saint
James Church located on the south side of the historic centre. The Saint
Augustine Church n the Matteotti Square.

francescano Beato Pietro da Treia. L’attuale Villa “Vetta Marina” (privata),
originariamente convento francescano, si dice sia il luogo dal quale
San Francesco abbia parlato ai pesci del mare.
SIROLO: The Chiesa di San Nicola da Bari - Saint Nicholas of Bari
Church- patron of the city, has been located in the Square of Sirolo
since 1200. In the Chiesa del SS. Rosario – Holy Rosary Church - are the
remains of the Franciscan friar Beato Pietro da Treia. The private “Vetta
Marina” Villa was originally a Franciscan convent. According to legend,
Saint Francis spoke here with the sea fishes.

Saint Faustina Church houses the remains of the christian martyr from
the catacombs of Rome.
ANCONA: Duomo di S.Ciriaco (sec.XI-XIV), la basilica conserva le spoglie
di S.Ciriaco, vescovo e martire e la storica immagine miracolosa della “Madonna
Regina di tutti i Santi”. La sinagoga situata in Via Astagno e costruita nel 1876,
ospita il tempio di rito italiano e levantino.
ANCONA: Cathedral of Saint Cyriacus (11th-14th century) houses the
remains of the bishop and martyr and the miraculous picture of “Madonna Regina di tutti i Santi”. The Synagogue, built in 1876 and located
in Astagno street, houses the Italian and levantine rite temple.
OSIMO: Duomo di San Leopardo dei secoli XII-XIII con le sue forme romano gotiche conserva un antico crocifisso che è stato protagonista di un miracolo.
La Basilica di S. Giuseppe da Copertino, patrono di Osimo, ne conserva le spoglie.

CASTELFIDARDO: Presso la Collegiata di S.Stefano, tra le altre numerose
Chiese, è custodito un Crocifisso miracoloso, invocato durante il colera del 1855.

NUMANA: Arco denominato “La Torre”: unico resto medievale
della torre dell’antica parrocchia di San Giovanni.
PORTO RECANATI: Castello Svevo (ospita la pinacoteca
comunale), Abbazia di Santa Maria in Potenza, chiesa
di San Giovanni Battista, Chiesetta del Suffragio.
POTENZA PICENA: Villa Buonaccorsi è un’elegante villa
cinquecentesca affiancata da scuderie, magazzini e un
meraviglioso parco giardino all’italiana con terrazzamenti.
LORETO: Innumerevoli i tesori: la Basilica, complesso del
Rinascimento, vanta architetti come: Giovanni Alberti, Marino
di Marco Cedrino, Giorgio Martini, Bramante, Andrea Sansovino,

while traipsing around the city. For a long time, Marches was the home of
Lorenzo Lotto and here you can find traces of his passing: from the Ancona
city art gallery to the Church of Saint Francis, from the Loreto Sanctuary

Antonio da Pesaro, is located in the Sala Consiliare. “The Deposition”, a 15th
century painting by Ercole Ramazzani, is located in the Parish Church of Saint
Anthony. The “Saint Sacrement Church” houses art treasures and remains
of narrative fresco cycles.
OFFAGNA: The Rocca Museum houses an interesting collection of ancient
arms. The Museum of Natural Sciences Luigi Paolucci shows the local flora and
fauna, naturalistic finds and rich scientific instruments collection. “Saint Sacrement
Church” was planned by the architect Andrea Vici from Luigi Vanvitelli school.

The story of Ancona starts with its
harbour. Its position was strategic to
trade between the East and the West.
In fact, that is precisely why it was
called the Gateway to the East.
It represents a blend of people and
cultures, whose presence is still
evident throughout the numerous
works of art that make the streets of
this city a real open air museum.
The Arch of Trajan is the gateway
that leads to the most ancient part of
Ancona. By going up towards Guasco
hill, one can see the of San Ciriaco
Cathedral, a medieval church with no
equals in Italy in terms of its style.In
fact, it represents a blend of
Romanesque, Gothic and Byzantine
art. It was built on top of the ancient
Greek Acropolis, or, more precisely, on
top of the remains of a temple dedicated to Aphrodite, the patron of sailors.
From the top, it continues to watch
over the sea while offering one of the
most beautiful scenic views of Ancona.
The major town’s museums are also
worthy of being mentioned, and
include the National Archeological
Museum of Marche, which provides
a succession of works that helped to
piece together the entire regional
history in a most absolute manner.

Ancona città di mare non può che offrire un
ricco menu marino ai suoi ospiti. Famoso è
lo “stocco all’anconitana”, una ricetta che
celebra il matrimonio tra il nordico stoccafisso
e la mediterranea oliva in un saporito piatto
che incontra il favore dei buongustai. Sempre
dal mare arrivano i moscioli, deliziosa cozza
selvatica che si pesca solo nel tratto che va
da Ancona a Sirolo. Per
gustarli al meglio ve li
consigliamo cucinati alla
marinara con olio, limone, prezzemolo e pepe
macinato fresco.
Scendendo dalle bianche e
imponenti scalinate del Passetto
si arriva nella spiaggia cittadina
di scogli e sassi, da qui si può
proseguire in una suggestiva
passeggiata lungo la colorata
fila di grotte dei pescatori. Vere
e proprie grotte scavate nella
roccia, un tempo rifugio per le
imbarcazioni, oggi sono oggetto di colorate personalizzazioni
che ne fanno delle abitazioni
estive. Pesce fresco e pennichella
pomeridiana sono gli ingredienti
dell’estate dei “grottaroli”... e la
sera, dal mare la costa diventa un
firmamento illuminato dalle fitte

wild mussel caught only in the stretch between
Ancona and Sirolo. To enjoy their flavour to the full,
we suggest you try them cooked alla marinara, with
oil, lemon, parsley and fresh ground pepper.
Descending the imposing white Passetto
stairway you will arrive at the city beach
with its cliffs and rocks. From here you
can continue on an evocative walk along
a colourful row of fishermen’s caves.
Actual caves dug out of the rock, they
once were a haven for vessels, today
they have undergone some colourful
customizations to convert them into
summer homes. Freshly caught fish and
an afternoon nap are the ingredients for
a summer a la “cave dweller” … and,
if you are out at sea, in the evenings
the coast becomes a firmament lit with
countless lights shining in the caves of
Ancona.

e propri tesori artistici. Dalla chiesa di San Nicola da Bari alla chiesa
del Sacramento, fino all’antica torre campanaria. Percorrendo poi la
strada che dalla frazione di San Lorenzo conduce al Conero, si raggiunge l’Abbazia di San Pietro fondata dai benedettini in un’area raccolta
e suggestiva. Qui, dal punto più alto del monte, si può godere di un
panorama ampio e bellissimo.

THE TOMB OF QUEEN PICENA
In the green forests of Conero, at Sirolo,
you can feast your eyes on a veritable
Picentine necropolis. This is the only
necropolis open to the public in the
entire Marche region. Here you will find
the tomb of Queen Picena, a funerary
complex belonging to a rich lady who
was buried with expensive funerary
accoutrements. Additional information:

Strolling about in Sirolo you will have
the chance to admire many
Liberty-style villas which recount a past
filled with enchanting architectural
structures. Of all the historical and
stately abodes, Villa Vetta Marina is
worthy of special note. Built on the
remains of a XIII century convent,
today this majestic and elegant villa
covers a wide surface. Here Saint
Francis himself planted two trees and
predicted, 80 years before the fact,
the coming of the Holy House of the
Madonna of Loreto.

for many years now thanks to their
cleanliness and the liveable conditions
that distinguish them from others. The
seaside promenade, which unwinds to
Marcelli from the upper part of the city,
reveals different coastal areas meeting
the most diverse needs: from the wild
beaches that are hidden by the nooks
of Mount Conero, to the extensive
stretches of shingle beaches and their
establishments, which are equipped
with every possible service.

fitto reticolo di viuzze abbraccia
le colorate casette dei pescatori e
si apre poi in un ampio belvedere
affacciato sul mare. Una terrazza
dal panorama unico che spazia
su tutta la costa della Riviera
del Conero. Dal centro si scende
verso il porto attraverso l’antica
via a gradoni che i pescatori percorrevano ogni mattina all’alba.
Qui c’è la parte bassa di Numana,
quella più moderna e vivace,
ricca di locali e stabilimenti.
Numana preserves its seaside origins
from above, where a network of
narrow streets embrace the colourful
fishermen’s homes while unwinding
over an extensive scenic view of the
sea. There is a terrace that offers a
unique view of the entire coastline
of the Conero Riviera. It is possible
to descend towards the harbour
from the centre of the town by
strolling down the
ancient step street,
which was used by
the fishermen every
morning at dawn. Here
lies the lowest part of
Numana, which is also
the most modern and
lively part of the town:

NUMANA CITTA’ DELLE TARTARUGHE
Numana, City of Turtles
Numana ospita dal 2001 un centro di primo soccorso
per le tartarughe marine. Gli animali soccorsi vengono
curati presso l’ Ospedale della Fondazione Cetacea
Onlus. Dal 2013 è stata allestita una “Caletta delle
tartarughe”, uno specchio d’ acqua dove gli animali
si ambientano alla vita marina e dove grazie ai biologi
che le osservano si potranno conoscere i misteri della
loro vita.
I momenti più emozionanti sono sicuramente
i Tartaday quando le tartarughe, portate alla Spiaggia
delle Due Sorelle dalle barche dei Traghettatori
della Riviera del Conero, ritornano in mare di fronte
centinaia di spettatori.
Since 2001 Numana has been opened a first aid center for
sea turtles. The Ospedale della Fondazione Cetacea Onlus–
Non-profit Cetacean Hospital - takes care of the rescued
animals. In 2013 an artificial turtles bay was set up. Here
the animals come back slowly to the sea life and biologists
study deeply their species.
The most exciting moments are certainly the “Tartadays”
when the turtles, ferried to the “Due Sorelle” beach by the
boats of The Conero Riviera Ferrymens, come back to the
sea in front of few hundred spectators.

Un lungomare completamente
pianeggiante adatto per chi vuole
correre o semplicemente
passeggiare. E’ proprio per questa
sua caratteristica che Numana ospita
una delle più belle e importanti
gare nazionali di mezza maratona:
la Conero Running. Il via alla gara
il 27 Aprile, tre le distanze da
percorrere: mezza maratona
competitiva, 10,8 km e 4 km non
competitive. Quest’anno per la prima
volta le manifestazioni non competitive
saranno aperte anche ai praticanti
del Nordic Walking.

A level seafront made for runners and
walkers. Thanks to this feature, Numana
hosts one of the most beautiful and important national Half Marathon
Championships: The Conero Running.
The marathon race starts on 27th April
and is divided into two main sections:
the half Marathon competitive race and
the 10,8 km and 4km non-competitive
race. This year for the first time the
non-competitive events will be open
to the Nordic Walking lovers.

INTERESTING FACTS
All that remains of the medieval past of
Numana is the tower, which has become
the city’s symbol, located in the higher
part of the city in a very panoramic spot.
It is shaped like an arch, but it actually
is all that remains of the bell tower of an
old church.
At Numana you can visit a Picentine
necropolis. The local archeological
museum, known as the Antiquarium,
houses important remains among
which the tomb of Queen Picena,
a noble lady buried in her sumptuous
funerary accoutrements, which also
include a chariot and a buggy.

Nella centralissima piazza di Porto
Recanati sorge il medievale
Castello Svevo, costruito come
difesa dagli attacchi dei pirati,
all’interno delle sue mura si svolgeva l’intera vita cittadina. Nell’ampio
cortile è ospitata l’arena intitolata
al tenore recanatese Beniamino
Gigli che durante l’estate diviene
il palcoscenico di un ampio
carnet di eventi culturali. A pochi
passi dal centro cittadino si trova
un sito archeologico che con i suoi
numerosi reperti ha riportato in vita
l’antica città romana di Potentia,
una testimonianza delle origini portorecanatesi come colonia romana.
Ogni estate, durante il Palio di
S. Giovanni, per le strade del centro diverse ciurme di “sciabegotti”
(pescatori con la sciabiga) si sfidano in una corsa con ceste di vimini
colme di pesce. Una festa che
rievoca un passato in cui i pescatori
correvano per essere i primi ad
arrivare al mercato.
In the central square of Porto
Recanati, there is a medieval castle
called Castello Svevo. Originally built
to defend the town from pirates, the
inhabitants lived within its walls.
In the large courtyard, there is an
arena that was named after the tenor
from Recanati, Beniamino Gigli.
During the summer, this arena
becomes the perfect setting for
many cultural events. A few steps
away from the town centre, there is
an archaeological site where many
findings helped to bring the ancient
Roman city of Potentia back to life.
Evidence that Porto Recanati was,
originally, a Roman colony. The Palio
of Saint John is one of the most
popular events in Porto Recanati.
Every summer, along the streets of
the old town centre, various crews of
“sciabegotti” (fishermen who fish with
a trawl) compete in a race holding
wicker baskets laden with fish. This is a
festival commemorating a time when
fishermen would race to be the first to
arrive at the market.

Alla periferia di Porto Recanati
sorge una vera e propria città
romana dove si possono respirare le atmosfere dell’antica
Roma. Si tratta dell’antico
insediamento di Potentia del
quale si sono conservati molti
reperti statuari, oggi conservati al
Castello Svevo, e i resti dell’antico tempio dedicato a Giove.
Nelle campagne di Porto Recanati, in zona Scossicci, nascosta tra
il verde sorge la Chiesetta della
Banderuola. Eretta nel luogo
dove si dice sostò la Santa Casa
prima di essere deposta nella sua
attuale sede a Loreto. Il nome
dato alla chiesa trova origine dalla
bandiera che indicava ai marinai la
via verso la Madonna di Loreto.
In the countryside surrounding Porto
Recanati, near Scossicci, hidden in
an oasis of green rises the Chiesetta
della Banderuola (Small Church of
the Flag). It was erected on the spot
where it is said that the Holy House
once stopped before it was placed
in its current headquarters in Loreto.
The church was named after the flag
which showed sailors the way to the
Madonna of Loreto.
In the outskirts of Porto Recanati rises
a veritable roman city where one can
take in the flavour of ancient Rome.
We are talking about the ancient
settlement of Potentia, with its
well-preserved statues which are
today house in the Svevo Castle,
and the remains of the ancient
temple dedicated to Jupiter.

Fino al 1862 Potenza Picena portava
il nome di Monte Santo e in effetti
questo borgo dall’aspetto medievale
raccoglieva ben 27 chiese
nel solo centro storico. Molte di esse oggi sono scomparse, ma rimane intatta la
pianta dell’antica città.

Until 1862 Potenza Picena was
called Monte Santo. This medieval hamlet gathered 27 churches
in the historic center only. Through the
centuries many churches were destroyed,
but the ancient city map has remained
intact.
Potenza Picena offers a traditional colorful
cuisine rich in flavors and aromas such as
agliatelle alla potentina, Frascarelli (a kind
of mush made from rice and white flour
topped with tomato sauce and cheese),

Il Santuario di Loreto è la
maestosa costruzione che in tre
secoli, grazie alla collaborazione
di una schiera di valenti artisti tra
cui il Bramante e il Sansovino, è
sorta per accogliere i pellegrini
in un avvolgente abbraccio. Una
costruzione tanto imponente è
stata edificata per custodire “come
una perla preziosa” le mura della
Santa Casa di Maria di Nazaret
che secondo la tradizione, venne
prodigiosamente trasportata in
volo dagli Angeli fino a Loreto.
All’interno di questa modesta dimora è anche conservata la statua
della “Madonna Nera” protettrice
degli aviatori e al centro della
devozione mariana.
The Sanctuary of Loreto is a majestic
construction that was built over three
centuries to welcome
pilgrims with a warm
embrace. It was built with
the help of a series of
talented artists, including
Bramante and Sansovino.
There is an imposing

a precious pearl”, was

to the walls of the Holy
House of Mary of Nazareth.
According to legend, it was
miraculously flown to the city
of Loreto by angels. Inside this

La preziosa reliquia custodita nel
Santuario ha fatto di questa città
una meta di pellegrinaggi che
trovano origine in tempi remoti;
le notizie del primo pellegrinaggio a Loreto risalgono agli inizi
del sec. XIV. Oggi si stimano circa
quattro milioni di visite all’anno,
testimonianza di come questo
luogo sia uno dei cuori pulsanti
della cristianità. Le tracce di questa
devozione imperitura sono visibili
nei due solchi che i fedeli hanno
scavato percorrendo in ginocchio
l’intero piedistallo marmoreo che
circonda la Santa Casa.

The precious relic that is kept within
the Sanctuary’s walls has made this
town a place of pilgrimage. These
pilgrimages started a long time
ago; with news of the first
pilgrimage to Loreto dating back
to the beginning of the fourteenth
century. Today, it is estimated that
around four million visitors arrive at
the sanctuary each year.
This demonstrates that this location
represents the beating heart of
Christianity. Traces of this eternal
devotion can be seen in the two
furrows running across long the
entire marble pedestal that
surrounds the holy house which
have been formed by the knees
of followers of the faith.

che espone lavori di mirabile

Loreto is also a town full of culture and
artistic masterpieces. A large Art
Gallery was set up in the Apostolic
Palace to exhibit admirable works,
such as the masterpieces by Lorenzo
Lotto and Pomarancio.
The characteristic town centre is built
upwards and it is full of ancient streets
filled with shops and workshops.

A LORETO
Pilgrims to Loreto
Cartesio venne a Loreto per
ringraziare la Madonna delle
scoperte fatte e chiedere di
continuare a farne ancora, Cristoforo Colombo mandò a Loreto
un suo marinaio a ringraziare la
Madonna di essere sopravvissuto
a una grande burrasca, molti
sono i pellegrini famosi che sono
passati da Loreto: Galileo Galilei,
Casanova, Alfieri e Mozart.
Ancora oggi il pellegrinaggio a
Loreto resta un’esperienza suggestiva e di grande spiritualità,
il più celebre e sentito è quello
che ogni anno a giugno parte a
piedi da Macerata.
Descartes came to Loreto to thank the
Madonna for the discoveries he had
made and petition that he continue
to make more; Christopher Columbus
sent one of his sailors to thank the
Madonna for sparing his life during a
storm, many famous pilgrims passed
by Loreto. Galileo Galilei, Casanova,
Alfieri, Mozart and still others are
all remembered on a marble slab in
the corridor leading to the vestry.
Even today a pilgrimage to Loreto
is an evocative and deeply spiritual
experience. The most celebrated and
famous pilgrimage takes place every
year in June on foot from Macerata.
Bulwarks were built to defend
the Holy House’s Sanctuary from
pirate raids and thanks to them the
Sanctuary became an impregnable
citadel of the faith. The chemin de
ronde may be visited to retrace the
steps of the medieval guards of old.
The route lasts approximately 45
minutes and offers a unique view of
the entire Conero Riviera.

Dalla stazione ferroviaria dirigetevi

If you want to fully partake of the spiritual
experience which the city of Loreto can
offer, we suggest an alternative route to
reach the Sanctuary.
From the train station head towards the
Scala Santa (Holy Stair) and go up 400
steps to reach the Holy House with a
purified heart and spirit. During your
tour look for the 15 news-stands which
sell the bronze tiles crafted by Guarino
Roscioli da Montottone in 1943. Once
you have reached the top of the staircase
you will be welcomed by the Sanctuary’s
white embrace!

La città di Osimo ha una doppia
vita che prosegue anche sotto
terra e anche da lì continua a
narrare storie e leggende. Un
dedalo di gallerie, cunicoli,
passaggi scavati nell’arenaria
che si estende per chilometri al
di sotto dell’abitato. Un labirinto
tutto da scoprire che suscita
fantasie ed incide sull’immaginario di chi le visita. Le Grotte del
Cantinone, adiacenti all’Ufficio
IAT, fruibili turisticamente, sono
state rimaneggiate ed utilizzate
in epoca medievale e conservano
interessanti figure e incisioni di
carattere spirituale. Più misteriose
e difficili da interpretare sono
invece i rilievi scolpiti nelle grotte
di piazza Dante, altro interessante
percorso sotterraneo che molto
presto sarà aperto al pubblico.

Verde 800228800) San Giuseppe da Copertino, patrono di
Osimo, è anche il protettore degli
studenti. All’interno della Basilica
a lui dedicata, la cui cripta ne
conserva le spoglie, sono ancora
visitabili le stanzette in cui visse
i suoi ultimi anni. Queste, oltre
ad oggetti personali del Santo,
contengono molti degli ex voto
lasciati da chi ne ha ottenuto
l’intercessione.

The city of Osimo has a double life
which even continues underground,
stories and legends are narrated even
there. A maze of tunnels, burrows and
underground passageways dug out
of the sandstone which extends for
kilometres under the town.
A labyrinth all to be discovered
which provokes imaginings and
affects the visitor’s imagination.
The Grotte del Cantinone, adjacent
to the IAT Office, serviceable by the
tourist, were modified and used in
Medieval times, and hold interesting
figures and engravings of a spiritual
character (info and reservations Toll

San Giuseppe da Copertino, Osimo’s
Patron Saint, is also the protector of
students. Inside the Basilica which is
dedicated to him, its crypt holds his
remains, are still visible the small rooms
in which he spent his final years. These
contain, besides the Saints personal
objects, many of the ex-votos left by
those who obtained his intercession.

Nell’atrio del Palazzo Comunale
di Osimo si viene accolti da una
serie di statue acefale di origine
romana, da cui deriva il soprannome di “senza testa” attribuito agli
osimani. Tante le ipotesi su questa
insolita decapitazione a metà
strada tra storia e leggenda.
In the atrium of Osimo’s Town Hall
you are greeted by a parade of
acephalus statues of roman origin.
This is the source of the moniker
given to the inhabitants of Osimo:
“headless”. There are many
hypotheses regarding this unusual
decapitation halfway between
history and legend.

L’autunno osimano profuma di anice e ha il sapore delle
ciambelle di mosto che tra i mesi di settembre e novembre si
possono trovare in tutte le panetterie. Deliziose a colazione o
anche per una merenda golosa, specie se farcite con cioccolato spalmabile o marmellata.
Autumn in Osimo smells of anise and has the flavour of bundt cakes
made with must which may be purchased in any bakery during the
months of September and November. They make a delicious breakfast
or a tasty snack, especially if they have a chocolate or jam filling.
Dedicato a S. Leopardo, primo
vescovo di Osimo, l’edificio in
pietra dei secoli XII-XIII, dalle
forme romanico-gotiche, sorge
su una primitiva chiesa del V sec.
e sopra un preesistente tempio
pagano. Degni di nota sono i due
preziosi portali lavorati in pietra,
la lunetta a destra di questi,
il grande rosone adornato.
Di particolare fascino è l’antico
crocifisso in legno custodito al
suo interno che pare essere stato
protagonista di un vero e proprio
miracolo: nel 1796, alla presenza
di oltre cento testimoni, avrebbe
spalancato occhi e bocca. La cripta
(XII sec.), vero sancta sanctorum,
custodisce i sarcofagi dei principali
vescovi e martiri osimani.
Dedicated to S. Leopardo, first
bishop of Osimo, the Romanesque
and Gothic stone building of the twelfththirteenth century was developed on
a primitive church of the fifth century,
rising above a preexistent pagan temple.
Noteworthy are the two precious stone
portals, the lunette to their right and the
big decorated rose window. The ancient
and particularly fascinating wooden
crucifix inside the church seems to have
been touched by a real miracle: it is said
to have opened its eyes and mouth in
1796, in the presence of over a hundred
witnesses. The crypt (twelfth century),
which is the real holy of holies, contains
the sarcophagi of the major bishops and
martyrs of Osimo.

“uscirà allo scoperto”: le grotte
Fregonara-Gallo sotto Piazza Dante.
Utilizzate come bunker durante la 2°
Guerra Mondiale, esse celano però
radici molto più antiche e misteriose. Gli enigmatici altorilievi incisi sulle pareti la rendono uno degli ipogei
più suggestivi e misteriosi dell’intera
città, con tanti segreti che aspettano
solo di essere svelati.

Se vi trovate nelle zone di Osimo
nel periodo di Pasqua non potete
perdervi la Processione del Cristo
Morto. In un paese illuminato
solo dalle luce di lanterne, oltre
200 confratelli incappucciati e
vestiti di nero conducono il catafalco del Cristo Morto per le vie
del centro. Questo emozionante
momento è accompagnato dal
suono sordo e un po’ sinistro delle
battistangole, uno strumento
costituito da una tavoletta con
anelli di ferro.
THE CAVES OF PIAZZA DANTE
The Cantinone Caves celebrate the
seventh anniversary of its opening to
the public and will inaugurate in April
2014 a new subterranean section: the
Fregonara- Gallo Caves discovered under
Piazza Dante. Even if they were used as
a bunker during the Second World War,
they are much older. The enigmatic reliefs
carved in the walls make the Cave one
of the most charming and mysterious
hypogeum of the city.

PASSION SUNDAY IN OSIMO
If you’re in the Osimo area during the
Easter season you cannot miss the
Procession of the Crucified Christ.
In a town illuminated only by
lanterns, over 200 hooded brothers
dressed in black lead the catafalque
of the Crucified Christ through the
streets of the city centre. This touching
moment is accompanied by the
subdued and slightly sinister sound
of the battistangole, an instrument
consisting of a small wooden board
with iron rings.

Camerano è la città natale del
pittore Carlo Maratti, che ha
lasciato un consistente patrimonio artistico conservato in
un’esposizione all’interno del
Palazzo Comunale. Maratti ha
inoltre conferito prestigio alla
locale chiesa di San Nicolò di
Bari trasferendovi le spoglie della
Santa Faustina, prima conservate
nelle catacombe romane.
Di pregio artistico e architettonico è anche la chiesa duecentesca di San Francesco, fatta
costruire dal Santo quando si
trovava ad Ancona, in occasione
del suo viaggio verso Oriente.
E’ possibile salire sul Campanile,
dal quale si gode un impareggiabile panorama.

Camerano is the birth village of the
painter, Carlo Maratti, who left a
significant artistic heritage behind. This
heritage is preserved and exposed in
the Palazzo Comunale, the municipal
hall. Maratti also conferred prestige
to the local church of San Nicolò of
Bari by transferring the remains of
Saint Faustina, which were previously
preserved in the Roman catacombs, to
this location. The third century church
of San Francesco is also artistically
and architecturally prestigious. The
Saint had it built when he was in Ancona
during one of his trip to the East.
One may ascend the Bell tower and
enjoy the incomparable panorama.

Dall’alto di una collina un monumento
unico nel suo genere, realizzato in
bronzo dallo scultore Vito Pardo, commemora la battaglia risorgimentale
che nel 1860 ha visto il contrapporsi
dell’esercito piemontese e di quello

“castellani” li indusse a costruire un
Sacrario dove potessero riposare, in
una distesa rasserenante di verde, le

The Battle
of Castelfidardo
The top of a hill, is home to a monument
made of bronze by the sculptor Vito Pardo,
which is one of a kind, in memory of the
battle of the Risorgimento that took place
in 1860: a battle between the army of the
Piedmont region and that of the Papal States.
The “castellani”, or the castle’s citizens’ piety
led them to build a sacred place where the
remains of all the soldiers who lost their lives
could be laid down to rest in the midst of a
serene area full of vegetation.

fare un vero e proprio viaggio nella
musica. La storia della fisarmonica
è documentata con splendidi scatti
fotografici e tre cimeli meritano di
essere ammirati: il primo disco registrato con la fisarmonica da Pietro
Deiro, la partitura originale di “Adios
Nonino” di Astor Piazzolla e una
lettera di Federico Fellini.

A visit to the International Accordion
Museum means going on a veritable musical journey. The history of the accordion
is documented through magnificent
snapshots and there are three relics worth
seeing: the first disc recorded with Pietro
Deiro’s accordion, the original score of
“Adios Nonino” by Astor Piazzolla and a
letter by Federico Fellini.

Walking through Offagna is like taking a

Like in an ancient medieval castle,
a wall that goes up a very steep hill
until it reaches the centre surrounds
the heart of the town: the Rocca,
the rock it was built by the people of
Ancona, between 1454-55, to defend their
dominant position over the surrounding
territories. The Rocca of Offagna
represents a significant example of military
architecture. Today inside is own structure
is hosted an ancient weapon show. Not to
lose the Museum of the Liberation and the
Museum of Natural Sciences Luigi Paolucci

Once upon a time various municipalities,
which were vassals to the city of Ancona,
formed a circlet of defensive fortifications.
Among these, Agugliano always
distinguished itself for its great
faithfulness. Little remains of the original
town layout, however you can visit
Castel d’Emilio, an ancient castle with
a square-shaped tower and well-preserved
surrounding walls. Agugliano is also
renowned for its homemade ice-cream.
Each year in June, ice-cream takes the
centre stage at a delicious Festival
attended by the best ice-cream makers

whose style falls somewhere between
the Romanesque and Gothic, houses
works of great artistic value and entire
pictoral cycles. Some events worth
attending in Polverigi: Inteatro, the
international festival of contemporary
theatre held in the majestic setting
of Villa Nappi and the Festival of
Witches, a weekend of enchantments
and magic which fills the town with
witches and frightening creatures.

Santa Maria Nuova is in the centre of the province of Ancona.
Santa Maria Nuova al centro della
provincia di Ancona, a ridosso
di un colle, pur avendo origini
antichissime risalenti alla preistoria, ha trovato la sua attuale
ubicazione solo a partire dal XV
secolo. Suggestive testimonianze dal passato di questo borgo
sono state rinvenute in diversi
siti archeologici; in località Pietrolone sono stati ritrovati resti
di un edicola funeraria e di una
villa decorata entrambe di epoca
romana.
Santa Maria Nuova is in the centre
of the province of Ancona. It lies
behind a hill and its origins date back
to prehistoric times. This town settled
in its present location only after the
fifteenth century. Suggestive evidence
relating to the past of this town was
found in various archaeological sites;
in Pietrolone, the remains of a funerary
shrine and of a villa, which were both
decorated with element.

Monte della Crescia, un luogo
estremamente magico e suggestivo. Si racconta che vi sia stato
nascosto un tesoro costituito da
una chioccia d’oro con pulcini e
secondo la leggenda a custodirlo
ci sarebbe anche un fantasma.

stage. The Inteatro Festival is the first
festival dedicated to performing arts.

Recanati standing on top of a hill near
the Conero Riviera was the birth place
of the famous poet, Giacomo Leopardi
and home to a large part of his poetic
literary works. It is now possible to visit
the places that belonged to Leopardi,
such as his Palace and its adjoining
library, which contains more than
12,000 volumes. But, there is also the
hill of “L’infinito”, the infinite hill, where
for some reason our curiosity excludes
the remains of the ancient tower of
Sant’Agostino, which inspired
“Il passero solitario”, the lonely
sparrow, and the location of “il sabato
del villaggio”, the town’s Saturday.

Le Grotte di Frasassi, a circa 60
km da Ancona, costituiscono un

dove il silenzio è rotto solo dallo
stillicidio delle gocce d’acqua
che rende il complesso vivo ed
in continua evoluzione. Le grotte
