Research topics: Hymenoptera parasitoids, their biology, behavior and application as biocontrol agents in
agricultural systems as well as side effects of pesticides on natural enemies.

Thesis on “The rearing of the exotic parasitoid Ageniaspis citricola Logvinovskaya for the biological control
of the citrus leafminer (Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton)”
January 2002, PhD in Agricultural Entomology, University “Federico II”, Naples (Italy). Thesis on “Taxonomic
and biological observations on the species belonging to the genus Ageniaspis Dahlbom (Hymenoptera
Encyrtidae)”.
TRAINING EXPERIENCE
- 2-5 October 2006: Statistical Analysis course given by personnel of the Department of Statistics at the
University of Florence and held at the University “Mediterranea” of Reggio Calabria (Italy);
- November – December 2000: stage at the Entomology Department of the Natural History Museum of
London, under the supervision of Dr. J. Noyes, to acquire knowledge on Hymenoptera parasitoids
systematics;
- March-May 1998: stage at the Regional Phytosanitary Services, Acireale (Catania) (Italy). Collaborated in
the rearing of Leptomastix dactylopii and Criptolaemus montrouzieri for the biological control of the Citrus
Mealybug (Planococcus citri) and in the rearing of Aphytis melinus for the biological control of the
California Red Scale (Aonidiella aurantii).
TITLES AND CREDENTIALS
- October 2004: received the title of "adjunct" for the scientific sector AGR/11 Agricultural and applied
Entomology (as decided by the Agricultural Faculty staff of the University of Catania on the 13/10/2004).
- May 2001: Passed the state exam to become teacher of “Mechanic and agricultural sciences,
management techniques, plant pathology and agricultural entomology” at the high school.

Jaume I (UJI) and Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias (IVIA) (at IVIA Valencia, Spain) with a
research project entitled “Studies on the biology and control methods of the tomato moth Tuta absoluta
and on the evaluation of side-effects of pesticides on beneficial arthropods”, under the supervision of Dr. A.
Urbaneja and Prof. J. Jacas.

Gainesville; Position: Visiting scholar (with funding from the University of Catania and the European Union);
(i) Conducted studies on some biological features (oviposition behavior, host discrimination and
polyembryony) of Ageniaspis citricola, a parasitoid of the Citrus Leafminer, (ii) Carried on laboratory, semifield and field trials to evaluate the interactions between Ageniaspis citricola, Citrus Leafminer and Red
Imported Fire Ants, (iii) Reared in quarantine Semielacher petiolatus, a recently introduced Eulophid
parasitoid of the Citrus Leafminer in Florida, and conducted experiments on its host discrimination ability
and on its interactions with Ageniaspis citricola; Supervisor: Dr M. A. Hoy.
- June – November 2002: Department of Phytosanitary Sciences and Technologies, section Agricultural
Entomology, University of Catania (Italy); Position: external collaborator; Collaboration in a research project
on biological control in vineyards. In particular the infestations of Planococcus ficus (key pest in the last
months of grape cultivation cycle) are monitored and Anagyrus pseudococci (Hymenoptera Encyrtidae) is
being reared on Planococcus citri maintained on potato shoots, for the biological control of the pest.

Entomology, University of Catania (Italy); Position: external collaborator; Field surveys, using biotechnical
methods, of rodents living in citrus orchards in Eastern Sicily in the framework of a research project of the
