Safil, la storica filatura laniera biellese, festeggia a Pitti Filati 75 i suoi sessant’anni di attività.
Per l’occasione apre i suoi archivi e trasferisce ricordi e progetti futuri in un originale allestimento
a tema dello stand e in una pubblicazione che sarà omaggiata a buyer e visitatori.
“From years to yarns” è la frase che sintetizza 60 anni di questa storia imprenditoriale italiana, che
vede protagoniste due generazioni della famiglia Savio e che ha saputo radunare intorno al progetto
aziendale un team di professionisti competenti e appassionati, perché l’eccellenza è un valore da
difendere ogni giorno nei mercati globalizzati.
Safil nacque a Biella nel 1954 come filatura laniera pettinata per iniziativa da Fernando Savio,
imprenditore illuminato che fece della flessibilità produttiva e della comprensione delle necessità del
cliente, basata sulla conoscenza tecnica delle sue produzioni, i suoi capisaldi.
Oggi Safil è guidata dai figli di Fernando: Cesare, responsabile degli aspetti commerciali e produttivi,
e Alberto, responsabile dell’area amministrazione e finanza.
E’ un’azienda che ha saputo superare le crisi del settore attraverso una costante proposta di filati
innovativi, di ammodernamento tecnologico (è stata la prima azienda al mondo a dotarsi di filatoi
compact per realizzare filati in pura lana compatti che non hanno rivali per pulizia, regolarità e
assenza di pelosità) e di attente acquisizioni.
Safil è uno dei leader del settore con una produzione annua che supera le 7.000 tonnellate di filati.
Ha oltre 700 dipendenti suddivisi tra gli stabilimenti di Plovdiv, in Bulgaria, dove avviene la filatura,
e quello di Gaglianico (Biella), con gli uffici direzionali e l’impianto di tintoria rocche e stracanno.
Alcune importanti acquisizioni hanno permesso a Safil di ampliare il suo know-how in settori di
nicchia di grande valore: nel 2008 ha rilevato la storica Filature Francaise de Mohair, diventando
leader europeo per i filati prodotti con tale fibra, nel 2010 ha acquisito Erredi spa, ampliando la sua
presenza diretta nel mercato della maglieria.
Nel 2012 ha rilevato il marchio, gli archivi storici di filati per maglieria e alcune esclusività produttive
della Filatura di Grignasco, rafforzando la sua presenza nel settore della maglieria intima.
Oggi la sua forza sui mercati è basata su una grande diversificazione produttiva. Safil infatti è
attiva nei filati per maglieria (esterna, intima o jersey), tessitura, calzetteria, hi-tech, arredamento,
abbigliamento sportivo e protettivo. Utilizza la tecnologia Compact per le collezioni X-Compact® e
Activeyarn®.
“L’estrema flessibilità produttiva è il fattore che ci ha consentito di distinguerci e consolidarci spiega
Cesare Savio e l’impegno in ricerca e innovazione è continuo.
Nel 2013 abbiamo prodotto oltre 200 articoli nuovi, impegno che comporta continui cambi di produzione
e un’attenta pianificazione delle risorse. Ovviamente non tutte queste prove si trasformeranno
in prodotti, ma i clienti sanno che siamo sempre disponibili ad ascoltare le loro esigenze e a
sperimentare anche per lotti di produzione molto piccoli”.

Ispirandoci alle caratteristiche naturali delle lane superfini e all’eccellenza qualitativa che è una
costante dei nostri filati, abbiamo creato un concept femminile che esalta le qualità dei materiali.
Sono nati capi senza tempo dal mood etereo e avvolgente, voluminoso nelle forme ma leggero al tatto,
capaci di utilizzare con sapienza lavorazioni e finezze contrapposte.
Alternano la finezza 18 del filato Plume 2/80 alla finezza 3 del filato Aran-Clipper-Bubble e sviluppano
le suggestioni del fatto a mano del filato Tundra e del Top Wool.

L’energia che ci ha guidati nella creazione di una collezione di filati dall’alto contenuto tecnologico
nasce dalla lettura e dall’interpretazione della vita quotidiana con eleganza, stile e pragmatismo.
Con la stessa concretezza abbiamo dato vita ai nostri fili Cool-Alps, Cool-Wool, Woolmax e li abbiano
resi protagonisti di una serie di capi da uomo dal mood sport-chic, che esalta le caratteristiche
tecniche di trasportabilità, comfort e resistenza.
Uno stimolo per i nostri clienti a realizzare collezioni più che mai attuali e dai molteplici utilizzi,
grazie anche alla possibilità di mixare i vari materiali. Coerente a questa tendenza è anche la novità
della stagione, il filato Nature (cotone/lana) dall’aspetto pulito nella versione tec o trattato per un
effetto vintage e infeltrito, con un tatto cool, come la nostra collezione.

Safil, l’attitudine innovatrice si esprime in un ventaglio di proposte sempre più ampio
Fibre naturali reinterpretate in chiave easy-chic e contemporanea
Una Collezione ricca di suggestioni che rispecchia la personalità di un marchio fortemente
sperimentatore come Safil.
Le proposte Safil per l’A/I 2015-16 spaziano a livello della varietà dei filati, delle lavorazioni, dei titoli
e della completezza delle cartelle colori, e incontrano il gusto di una moda knitwear che privilegia
la qualità delle fibre naturali, il comfort di utilizzo e la vestibilità contemporanea.
Filati in lana per maglieria
Topwool:
per chi è convinto che il filato per maglieria maschile sia un prodotto statico e senza sorprese, ecco
la smentita di Safil. La collezione Topwool mantiene gli standard elevati della lana sudamericana
rigorosamente no mulesing, non trattata o con trattamento total easy care, che la rende lavabile in
lavatrice, e li abbina ad un gusto contemporaneo e inedito. Attualissime le versioni gommate e con
effetto brinatura, per una maglieria adatta ad una moda informale ma ricercata.
Nella versione Clipper lo stoppino derivato dal Topwool è abbinato alla brinatura, con un effetto di
preziosità e touch naturale. La cartella colori è ampliata sia nei melange che negli uniti.
Filato X-Compact:
prodotto novità della scorsa stagione, si riconferma grazie all’ottima accoglienza del mercato che ha
colto il grande elemento di novità del filato.
Frutto di una competenza tecnologica che distingue Safil sul mercato e che permette di ottenere
titoli fini e medio-fini con caratteristiche peculiari, il filato compact è dotato di particolare regolarità,
pulizia e assenza di pelosità. Unisce le proprietà della fibra di lana ad un aspetto che per alcune
qualità rimanda alle fibre artificiali, ed è realizzato in pura lana, nella variante preziosa lana/seta e
in quella total easy care lana/nylon.
Safiella:
il filato in merino australiana extrafine, che è diventato un simbolo dell’azienda grazie al suo rapporto
qualità/prezzo e alla ricchezza cromatica, si rafforza con una cartella colori che rinnova le proposte
unite e i melange, con un’attenzione particolare ai colori donna. Effetto prezioso e sofisticato per il
filato Safiella ritorto con un filamento lurex.
Filati in lana e cotone
Il tratto distintivo Safil di questa categoria di prodotto è il filato pettinato 60% lana e 40% cotone,
che nasce da una tecnologia appannaggio solo dell’azienda biellese. Rappresenta un vero e proprio
elemento innovatore nelle collezioni di maglieria, che acquisiscono vestibilità e texture “leggere”
anche nei capi invernali. Novità della stagione è la versione in lana non trattata, che consente di
realizzare tessuti in lana cotta dalla mano contemporanea, poco tradizionale, oltre alla versione in
lana trattata total easy care.
Active Yarn
I blend esclusivi Safil, in virtù dei mix tra filato in merino extrafine e fibre tecniche brevettate,
garantiscono un alto livello di comfort in tutte le situazioni di uso e hanno proprietà termoregolatrici
e di controllo dell’umidità. Nascono così le mischie Cool-wool (merino 20% e Coolmax® 80%) e
Woolmax (merino 45% e Coolmax® 55%), che assicurano un comfort naturale a contatto con la pelle
e non ostacolano la naturale traspirabilità e termoregolazione corporea. Ideali per i capi in cui il
fashion incontra lo sportswear, hanno tenuta antipiega (wash and wear) e si distinguono per la mano
morbidissima e l’ampia cartella colori.
Filati Fantasia
Settore non tradizionale per Safil, che nelle ultime stagioni ha accolto la sfida creativa del filato
fantasia con risultati di qualità e un ottimo feedback dal mercato. La collezione stagionale privilegia
le lavorazioni frisé, bouclé, garzate, le basi con stoppini melange e i titoli nm tra 1000 e 14000.

STORIES OF YEARS, YARNS AND A FAMILY THAT HAS ALWAYS BELIEVED IN INNOVATION
Safil, the long-established Biella-based worsted spinning company celebrates its sixty years in
business at Pitti Filati 75.
It opens its archives for the occasion, and transforms memories and future plans into an original
themed-display on its stand and a publication which will be presented to buyers and visitors.
“From years to yarns” is the phrase that summarises 60 years of this story of Italian entrepreneurship
featuring two generations of the Savio family, which has managed to assemble a team of skilled,
enthusiastic employees to carry the corporate project forward, because excellence is a value to be
defended every day in the globalised markets.
Safil is a worsted spinning company founded in 1954 in Biella by Fernando Savio, an enlightened
businessman who made production flexibility and an understanding of customers’ requirements,
based on technical knowledge of their products, his cornerstones.
Today Safil is managed by Fernando’s sons, Cesare, in charge of commercial and production aspects,
and Alberto, in charge of administration and finance.
It is a company which has managed to overcome downturns in the sector through constantly
offering innovative yarns, technological modernisation (it was the first company in the world to
install compact spinning machines to produce compact pure wool yarns that are unrivalled for
smoothness, evenness and lack of hairiness) and judicious acquisitions.
Safil is one of the industry’s leaders, with an annual production of over 7,000 tons of yarn, It also
has 700 employees divided between its factories in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where spinning takes place,
and Gaglianico (Biella), where the administrative offices and the cone dyeing and rewinding plant is
situated. A number of significant acquisitions have allowed Safil to expand its know-how in valuable
niche sectors. In 2008 it bought out the historic Filature Francaise de Mohair, so becoming European
leader for yarns produced with that fibre. In 2010 it acquired Erredi spa and increased its direct
presence in the knitwear market, while in 2012 it bought out the Filatura di Grignasco brand-name,
historic archives of knitting yarns and some of its exclusive products, so strengthening its presence
in the underwear sector. Nowadays its market strength is based on a great diversity of products.
Safil produces yarns for knitting (knitwear, underwear or jersey), weaving, hosiery, hi/tech,
furnishing, sportswear and protective wear. It employs Compact technology for its X-Compact® and
Activeyarn® collections.
“Highly flexible production is the factor that has allowed us to make our mark and establish our
position -explains Cesare Savio and our commitment to research and innovation is constant. In 2014
we produced over 200 new articles, an effort that involves continuous changes in production and
careful planning of resources. Obviously, not all of these prototypes will become products, but our
customers know that we are always willing to listen to their needs and to experiment with even
very small production lots”.
Alberto Savio says: “Safil’s sixty years in business are proof that with hard work and constant
entrepreneurial dedication, it is possible to preserve Italian excellence and our industrial tradition.
It is gratifying to find that the teachings of our father Fernando are still relevant and valid today.

Women’s Collection, volumes and lightness for knitwear with sophisticate construction
Drawing inspiration from the natural characteristics of the superfine wools and excellent quality
that are a constant of our yarns, we have created a concept for women that exalts the quality of
the materials.
The result is enveloping and ethereal timeless pieces, with voluminous shapes but light to the touch,
that skilfully blend contrasting techniques and counts. Fineness 18 of the Plume 2/80 yarn contrasts
with the fineness 3 of Aran-Clipper-Bubble yarn, and Tundra and Top Wool yarns give the idea of
handmade. Unique creations, a palette to inspire all creatives and let them express themselves in a
versatile and extremely personal way, as unique for quality and technology as Safil’s yarns for the
FW 2015 | 2016 collection.
Men’s Collection, energy and everyday style
The energy that guided us in the collection of a collection of yarns with a high technological content
has its origin in the interpretation of daily life with elegance, style and pragmatism.
With the same practicality we have developed our Cool-Alps, Cool-Wool and Woolmax yarns, and
we have made them the protagonists of a series of menswear with a sports-chic mood that enhances
the technical features of wearability, comfort and resilience.
A stimulus for our customers to create collections more up to date than ever and with numerous
uses, thanks also to the possibility of mixing the various materials. Also consistent with this trend
is the season’s newest idea Nature yarn (cotton/wool) with a smooth look in the tec version or
treated for a vintage, felted effect, with a touch as cool as our collection.

A Collection full of ideas that reflects the personality of a highly experimental brand such as
Safil. The variety of yarns, techniques and counts and the completeness of the colour card for Safil’s
FW 2015 | 2016 collection encounters the taste for fashion knitwear that favours the quality of natural
fibres, comfortable wearability and a modern fit.
Wool yarns for knitwear
Topwool:
here is Safil’s answer to those who are convinced that yarns for men’s knitwear is a static product
with no surprises. The Topwool collection maintains the high standards of South American wool,
strictly non-mulesed, untreated or with total easy-care treatment that makes is machine-washable,
and pairs it with a modern, original taste.
Very contemporary are the rubberized and frost-effect versions for knitwear suited to an informal
but elegant fashion. In the Clipper version, Topwool roving generated from Topwool yarn is paired
with frosting for a refined effect and natural touch. The range of both melange and solid colours on
the colour card has been enlarged.
Filato X-Compact:
last season’s innovative product continues to be a success thanks to its excellent reception by the
market, which recognized the yarn’s original features.
The result of an innovative technology unique to Safil and which makes it possible to obtain fine and
medium-fine counts with special characteristics, compact yarn is endowed with particular evenness,
smoothness and lack of hairiness.
It combines the properties of wool fibre with an appearance that recalls man-made fibres in some
aspects, and is made in pure wool in exquisite wool/silk or total easy care wool/nylon versions.
Safiella:
the extrafine Australian merino yarn, which has become symbolic of the company as a result of
its quality/price ratio and the richness of its colours, now comes in an updated range of solid and
melange colours, with special focus on colours for womenswear. Safiella twisted yarn with a lurex
filament provides an exquisite, sophisticated effect.
Wool and cotton yarns
Safil’s distinctive product in this category is the 60% wool and 40% worsted cotton yarn which is the
result of technology exclusive to the Biella-based company. It represents a truly innovative element
in knitwear collections, where even winter pieces acquire “light” wearability and textures.
New for the season is the untreated wool version, which makes it possible to create boiled wool
fabrics with a modern, non-traditional handle, as well as the total easy-care treated wool version.
Active Yarn
Safil’s exclusive blends of extrafine merino yarns and patented technical fibres have heat and
moisture regulating properties that ensure a high degree of comfort in all situations.
Two of these blends are Cool-wool (20% merino and 80% Coolmax®) and Woolmax (45% merino and
55% Coolmax®), that ensure natural comfort on contact with the skin and do not obstruct the body’s
natural breathability and heat regulation. Ideal for clothing where fashion encounters sportswear,
they are wash and wear and stand out for a very soft touch and extensive colour card.
Fancy Yarns
A non-traditional sector for Safil, which in the past few seasons has taken up the creative challenge
of fancy yarns with quality results and excellent feedback from the market.
The seasonal collection favours frisé, bouclé, brushed finishes, melange blends and nm counts
between 1000 and 14000.
