Volteggiando alte sopra un paesaggio eterno,
nel cuore di una città di pietra scura,
le immagini de Le Avventure del Barone di Munchausen
si dimenano su uno schermo gigante
che torreggia su una piazzetta
illuminata dalla luna.
Mentre i bambini giocano,
le persone sedute ai tavolini
sistemate come se fosse un cinema all’aperto,
mangiano, conversano e
guardano catturate dal film.
Altri preferiscono fuggire
cercando salvezza nel bar locale.
Ma non c’è modo di fuggire.
Una luce brilla da dietro il bar
e getta le ombre dei bevitori
attraverso la piazza sullo schermo.
Lì si mescolano con i personaggi del mio film,
in una danza reale
e fantastica allo stesso tempo,
che rimane per sempre impressa nella mia memoria.
L’Umbria Film Festival di Montone
può far suscitare questo tipo di emozioni.
è un evento magico.
Sono orgoglioso di farne parte.

in the heart of a dark stone town,
images from The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
tumble across a giant screen
which towers over a small moonlite square.
While children play,
people sitting at tables or chairs
arranged as an affresco cinema,
eat, talk, watch - captured by the film.
Others prefer to escape - to the safety
of the local café.
But there is no escape.
A light shines from behind the bar.
It hurls the shadows of the drinkers
back across the square
and onto the screen.
There they blend with the characters of my film
in a dance of reality and fantasy
that remains forever imprinted on my memory.
The Montone Umbria Film Festival
can do things like that to you.
It’s a magical event.

È una grande soddisfazione, dopo tanti anni di collaborazione prima come volontario, poi
come assessore alla cultura, fare questa presentazione in veste di Sindaco. L'Umbria Film
Festival, che quest'anno raggiunge la XVIII edizione, rappresenta per la nostra comunità,
la regione, e per l’intero Paese, un'importantissima manifestazione culturale, sinonimo di
qualità ed eccellenza. Tanti gli artisti che negli anni ci hanno onorato della loro presenza,
ricordo Terry Giliam, ideatore del logo dell'evento, presidente onorario dell'associazione
Umbria Film Festival, nonché nostro illustre concittadino; Mike Figgis, Ken Loach, Colin Firth,
Ralph Fiennes e tanti altri. Vorrei rivolgere un particolare ringraziamento all'Associazione
Umbria Film Festival, al presidente Marisa Berna, al direttore artistico Vanessa Strizzi ed a
tutti i soci; il duro lavoro che svolgete rende possibile l'ideazione e la realizzazione dell'evento, anche in questo momento di estrema difficoltà economica. Estendo il mio grazie a
tutte le istituzioni che sostengono e supportano il festival ed a tutti coloro che direttamente
o indirettamente permettono la realizzazione dell’evento. "Il modo migliore di guardare
un film é quello di renderlo un'esperienza intima", Montone, la sua piazza i suoi colori i suoi
profumi fanno si che il "sogno" del cinema possa prendere vita, in un set naturale dove
narrare e vivere attraverso la fantasia, storie e stati d'animo.
I’m in the truly privileged position to introduce, in my role as Mayor of Montone the Umbria
Film Festival, not only because of the excitement it generates, but because I have been
personally involved with the Festival for many years - first as a volunteer and then through
my position as Councilor for Culture.
We now present the 18th annual edition of a truly unique cinematic experience which represents for our community, the region and for the whole country, an extremely important
cultural event, synonymous with quality and excellence. Many extraordinary artists over the
years have honoured us with their presence, support and participation. Well do I remember Terry Gilliam, known to so many as one of the Monty Python crew, but whose achievements in so many areas put him firmly on the world stage, who created the outstanding
logo for this event. Now of course, he is the honorary president of the Umbria Film Festival
Association as well as being our illustrious fellow citizen. Joining him as participants over
the years have been Mike Figgis, Ken Loach, Colin Firth, Ralph Fiennes and many others.
My special thanks go to the Umbria Film Festival Association, its president, the indefatigable Marisa Berna, our gifted and discerning artistic director Vanessa Strizzi and to all the
members whose hard work makes this all possible even in this extremely difficult economic
climate. Many grateful thanks also to those institutions that support and sustain the Festival
and all those who directly and indirectly make it happen. There is no doubt that the best
way to see a film is to make it an intimate experience, and Montone, with its wonderful
piazza, its colours and aromas make the cinema dream come to life on a natural set where you can immerse yourself in fantasy, stories and the whole range of human emotions.

18 anni! Benvenuto nel mondo dei grandi!
Il nostro festival ha raggiunto la maggiore età. Ma che vuol dire per un festival come il nostro entrare nel
mondo dei grandi? Vuol dire non poter più contare solo sulle amorevoli (è proprio il caso di dire) cure di chi
lo ha creato e sostenuto in tutti questi anni. Vuol dire che passione, voglia, amore per il cinema, non bastano
più. Vuol dire essere arrivati ad un punto di snodo. O si cresce o si muore…
Abbiamo dimostrato in questi anni che Montone è un luogo dove è possibile mostrare bellissimi film, ospitare
grandi attori, registi e produttori, raccogliere nella bella piazza migliaia di persone, creare indotti economici
molto importanti per tutta la comunità montonese. Questo è stato fatto per diciotto lunghissimi anni.
Ma ora tutto questo non basta più. L’Umbria Film Festival è diventato una cosa troppo grande per essere
gestita ancora con poco budget e confidando nelle caritevoli attenzioni di pochissimi affezionati supporter
dell’Associazione Umbria Film Festival. Servono energie, soldi, attenzioni costanti durante tutto l’anno da chi
ha i mezzi e le possibilità per farlo.
Noi ancora una volta, e nonostante i tanti momenti di scoramento che abbiamo vissuto, non ci siamo rassegnati a veder scomparire questo festival. è troppo l’amore che abbiamo per questa nostra manifestazione per
non tentare ancora per un anno l’impresa di allestire una nuova edizione. Ci siamo ingegnati ideando azioni
di crowfunding (www.umbriafilmfestival.com), ricercando nuovi sponsor, allestendo banchetti per vendere
prodotti con l’ormai inconfondibile logo dell’UMBRIA FILM FESTIVAL e il cui ricavato servirà per coprire le spese
sostenute per quest’anno (a proposito, non dimenticate di farci un salto!). E ancora una volta ci siamo riusciti.
Serrando le fila tra di noi, facendo tutti grosse rinunce e sacrifici abbiamo donato a questa comunità ancora
una volta la possibilità di condividere insieme in piazza grandi emozioni.
I temi quest’anno girano intorno al microcosmo familiare che è la base della nostra società. Si parte con
l’Argentina di Ciencias Naturales di Matías Lucchesi, dove una ragazzina di 12 anni non riesce a darsi pace
perché vuole trovare suo padre. Sempre di famiglia si parla nel bel film francese di Katell Quillévére: Suzanne.
Protagonista una ragazza e i suoi parenti più cari. Un figlio avuto giovanissima, un legame forte con la sorella
e un uomo che le cambierà completamente la vita. Con Only in New York di Ghazi Albuliwi, le tradizioni di
una famiglia palestinese si scontrano con l’idea del figlio nato e cresciuto a New York. Con uno stile Woody
Allen prima maniera, Albuliwi riesce a raccontare una storia d’amore e a ridere di temi che tutti sappiamo
essere molto seri. Infine, il western australiano Mystery Road, film di genere che racconta le problematiche
delle famiglie aborigene in un’Australia ancora tutta bianca.
Nella sezione corti per bambini, tradizionale appuntamento con un concorso il cui vincitore è stabilito da una
giuria composta da ragazzini delle scuole di Montone e Pietralunga, ci sono storie intriganti, raccontate con
stili completamente diversi.
E poi ancora gli Umbriametraggi, un concorso che presenta il meglio della produzione corta Umbra. La Tavola rotonda dal tema: Politiche Migratorie e Investimento nel Capitale Umano, in collaborazione con la Regione
Umbria. Insomma, per la diciottesima volta un piccolo grande evento. Per guardare avanti serve un sostegno
non solo a parole. Chi ha la possibilità, la voglia e il ruolo, anche istituzionale, per darlo, batta un colpo. Non
saranno ammessi i rimpianti.

Embrace our 18th edition - don’t let it be the last!
Our Festival has come of age -18 years and we are now firmly on the cultural map both in Italy and internationally. Reaching the age of majority, however, has brought with it difficulties that no amount of spirit, heart and
sheer love can overcome entirely. We face, as many youngsters who choose this time to leave home do, the
financial hardships of an unforgiving time. We of course are already at home, in the beautiful surroundings
of Montone and in the embrace of so many followers, participants and supporters-our cinema loving family.
But we are now at a turning point. Either we grow or we die. We have shown throughout this time that Montone
is a place where it is possible to show beautiful films, host important actors, film directors and producers, gather
thousands of people in the stunning piazza and create very important economic advantages for the whole
community of Montone. All this has been done for 18 long years. Ironically, we are victims of our own remarkable success! The Umbria Film Festival has become too big to continue being run on a small budget and to rely
on the charitable hands of a very few affectionate supporters of the Umbria Film Festival Association. What is
needed is energy, money and constant attention all year round by those who have the means and the ability
to do so. As part of the guiding spirit of our Festival, all events are free, and we intend to continue this tradition.
Individuals of course are welcome to contribute on a personal scale, but what we need now is the philanthropy
and sponsorship of those who not only want to support this event, but who can see the present and future benefits for all of us. To invest now is a long term investment that matures as we do. However, once again, in spite
of overwhelming odds and moments of great discouragement, we have not given up the hope of keeping
the Festival alive. Our love for the Festival is too great not to take up the challenge for one more year. We are
now actively crowdfunding (www.umbriafilmfestival.com), looking for new sponsors, while setting up stalls to
sell products with the by now unmistakable logo of the Umbria Film Festival. The proceeds of these will serve
to cover this year’s expenses so please don’t forget to drop by. Once again we have succeeded. By standing
together and making great sacrifices, we have given this community, and the community of cinema lovers, the
chance to share emotions in the great square one more time. This year’s themes revolve around the microcosm
of the family, the basis of our society. We begin with the Argentina of Ciencias Naturales (Natural Sciences)
in which a 12- year-old girl cannot settle down because she wants to find her father. The family is also at the
centre of the beautiful French film directed by Katell Quillévére - Suzanne. The lead character is a girl and her
closest relatives. A son born when she was very young, an intense relationship with her sister and a man who will
change her life completely. In the film Only in New York directed by Ghazi Albuliwi the traditions of a Palestinian
family clash with the ideas of a son born and brought up in New York. With an early Woody Allen style, Albuliwi
is able to tell a love story and laugh at themes that we all know are very serious. The last film on the programme
is the Australian western Mystery Road, a genre piece that deals with the problems of aboriginal families, now
very much a disadvantaged minority in their original homeland. In the shorts for children competition, in which
the winning film is chosen by a jury made up of children from the Montone and Pietralunga schools, there are
amazingly beautiful stories told in completely different styles, and like all great children’s films they have an
unmistakable appeal to adults as well. And once again there is the Umbriametraggi (Umbria filmmakers), a
competition which presents the best of the shorts from Umbria. There is also the Round Table with the theme:
’Migration Politics and Investment in Human Capital’ in collaboration with the Regional Government of Umbria.
So welcome, for the 18th time, to a compact but great event. In order to continue this unique and world class
event we need support not just words. To those who have the ability, the desire, either personally or through an
institution, to give their support please step forward now and invest in the future. No room for regrets.

L’Umbria Film Festival rappresenta una delle più importanti manifestazioni
cinematografiche italiane, per la qualità delle proiezioni, per la presenza di ospiti
internazionali legati al mondo del cinema, per la sua particolare formula organizzativa
e stilistica e per il coinvolgimento degli spettatori che riesce a concretizzare, tra i quali
i giovani delle scuole del territorio, direttamente investiti del ruolo di selezionatori dei
cortometraggi a loro dedicati.
Un evento che, è dimostrato dalla sua longevità, ha costruito, negli anni, un interesse
intorno a sé sempre crescente, anche della stampa internazionale, specialmente di
quella di settore.
Nell’ottica di favorire una sempre piú ampia visibilità della manifestazione, con la finalità
di amplificarne la realizzazione oltre i confini, geografici e specifici, oggi raggiunti,
il GAL Alta Umbria partecipa attivamente, per il secondo anno consecutivo, alla
realizzazione del Festival, attraverso azioni dirette di promozione e pubblicizzazione dello
stesso, coerentemente con le finalità del proprio Piano di Sviluppo Locale, che prevede
investimenti pluriennali mirati a favorire l’ accrescimento del valore aggiunto degli eventi
locali di alto valore qualitativo, ai fini di più ampi obiettivi di sviluppo economico e sociale
delle comunità locali e dei territori in cui queste vivono, studiano e lavorano.
Una scelta data dal riconoscimento dell’ Umbria Film Festival quale evento che può
concorrere, grazie agli spettatori che riesce a coinvolgere e grazie alla cultura che riesce
a produrre, allo sviluppo socio-economico del nostro territorio.
The Umbria Film Festival is one of the most important Italian cinema events for a number
of reasons: the quality of its screenings, the presence of International guests associated
with the cinema, the style of its organization and the involvement of the audience. There
are several special sections, such as the one featuring short films made for children,
and children from Montone and the surrounding areas vote for the winner. Like all good
children’s films they are also delightful and entertaining for adults.
This entire event has, over the years, continued to grow and attract wide attention including
that of the international press, especially that sector of the press that specialises in cinema.
With a view to creating an even greater visibility that now extends beyond our specific
geographical borders GAL Upper Umbria is actively participating in this prestigious Festival
for the second consecutive year by its direct promotion and advertising campaign. Our
involvement reflects the objectives of our own Local Development Plan that makes
provision for longstanding investments. Investments which favour the growth of social and
economic development in the local community and territories by supporting high quality
local events .
The Umbria Film Festival is recognised as an event that has contributed to our goals, thanks
to the audience it now attracts and to the culture that it both promotes and produces.

In occasione dell’anniversario della liberazione di Montone, che cade quest'anno e quindi in anticipo rispetto alla data nazionale, l’UMBRIA FILM FESTIVAL ha deciso
di ospitare una giornata di studio sulla resistenza di ieri e di oggi come 'evento anteprima' del 18° Umbria Film Festival. All’incontro parteciperanno rappresentanti
dell'ANPI e testimonianze di altri protagonisti delle "resistenze": un confronto storico, generazionale e culturale fra la memoria e l'attualità. Alla giornata sarà legata
anche una mostra a Montone con materiale dell'ANPI locale e documentazioni video riguardo ad altre ‘resistenze’ che avvengono oggi nel mondo.
La mostra durerà dal 6 Luglio al 20 Settembre 2014.

On the anniversary of the liberation of Montone from German Occupation during WW2, which is officially July 6 this year, the UMBRIA FILM FESTIVAL is holding a day of
study exploring resistance movements both in the past and today as a preview event of the 18th Umbria Film Festival.
Representatives of the National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI), along with firsthand accounts from members of the ‘resistances’ will provide historical comparisons, including generational and cultural change between how it was, and how it now is.
There will be an accompanying exhibition with material from the local ANPI and video documentation regarding the many other acts of civil and military resistance
that are taking place throughout the world today.
The exhibition runs from 6 July to 20 September 2014.

Politiche migratorie e investimento nel capitale umano:
la migliore strategia di politica industriale per un paese avanzato
L'Umbria Film Festival da sempre riserva grande spazio alle trasformazioni in senso multietnico e
multiculturale, alle opportunità e criticità che ne derivano, alle guerre dimenticate, alle cause degli
esodi e della crisi. A partire dal 2007 il Festival ospita la Sezione Migranti, realizzata in collaborazione con
la Regione Umbria e via via articolatasi in mostre, workshop, concerti e, soprattutto, in tavole rotonde
di approfondimento che, negli anni scorsi, hanno affrontato tematiche specifiche quali: seconde
generazioni, arte e cultura dei migranti in Italia, scuola e società multietnica, politiche di integrazione,
rapporto con i media, comunicazione, ritorni.
Da qualche anno i fenomeni migratori sono entrati prepotentemente nel tema più generale della ricerca
di politiche di sviluppo sostenibile volte a restituire competitività all’ economia italiana ed europea.
Nei paesi, come gli USA, che hanno avviato l’uscita dalla crisi, lo sviluppo è sostenuto dalla crescita dei
settori che producono innovazione e che includono non solo il manifatturiero, ma anche i servizi.
L’innovazione è prodotta dal capitale umano e dalla concentrazione dello stesso in una località ben
individuata. Un obiettivo da perseguire con convinzione potenziando i finanziamenti alla ricerca e
all’istruzione e sviluppando politiche migratorie volte a trattenere ed attirare i talenti.

the best political strategy for an advanced country.
Since 2007 the Umbria Film Festival has hosted the ‘Migrants Section’ set up in collaboration with the Regional
Government of Umbria. This particular section has grown and broadened over the years, expressing itself
through exhibitions, workshops, concerts and above all Round Table discussions addressing specific
themes; second generations, the art and culture of migrants in Italy, multiethnic schools and society, the
politics of integration, relationship with the media, communication and suchlike.

Over the years the continued and growing migration of people across borders for reasons that may
include crises in their own country, wars, political fears and economic motives has begun to dominate the
discussion regarding policies of sustainable development.
In countries like the USA, now emerging from the economic crisis, development is sustained by the growth
of sectors that produce innovation in both the manufacturing sector and also the provision of services.
Humans from all walks of life and cultures with their concentration in a particular area in turn produce a
culture of innovation. If we invest in people, and their educational and other needs, as well as develop
migration policies that look towards the future, then we will be in a considerably better position to attract
and maintain the best available talent from around the world.

Il progetto Osterie del Gusto è finalizzato a creare una rete di punti di ristorazione che
promuovano la riscoperta ed il rilancio delle antiche ricette culinarie e la valorizzazione
della gastronomia locale, come fattore di promozione del territorio ed elemento di
attrattività turistica. Nasce dalla collaborazione del Gal della Media Valle del Tevere e
dell’Alta Umbria con Confcommercio della provincia di Perugia e CIA dell'Umbria. Al
progetto hanno aderito 38 imprese della ristorazione e 51 aziende agricole

Il cortometraggio di animazione The Sunshine Egg parla di una gallina in batteria di nome Lotte. Lotte si sforza
invano di compiere il suo dovere ogni giorno, ma non
riesce proprio a fare ciò che le si richiede. In maniera
molto semplice, il film proietta i problemi sociali umani
nel contesto di un pollaio.
In una galassia lontana, un Astrocane e una Pulce Spaziale combattono tra di loro per poi risvegliarsi fianco a
fianco, abbandonati su un pianeta alieno deserto. Una
linea nella sabbia mantiene una fragile tregua, ma riuscirà a dominare l’antico odio tra questi due nemici
galattici?
The animated short film, The Sunshine Egg, is about a
battery hen named Lotte. She vainly struggles to fulfil her
daily duty and just doesn’t accomplish what’s required.
With a little twinkle of the eye this film projects human
social problems into a hen house.
In a galaxy far, far away, a Dogonaut and a Space
Flea shoot each other down only to awake side by side,
marooned on an alien desert planet. A line in the sand
keeps a fragile truce, but can it hold back generations
of hatred between these long time galactic enemies?

trasforma il suo desiderio in una vera e propria minaccia: morire assiderata in mezzo al
nulla. Di nascosto dalle autorità scolastiche e dalla madre della ragazza, la sua insegnante
decide di aiutarla. Le due partono così alla ricerca della verità, ma non sarà un viaggio
facile... Il loro unico indizio è una piccola targhetta arrugginita.
In a rural school in the middle of the mountains, a girl who is starting to become a woman
feels the profound need to discover her true identity. She does not know who her father is
and she is determined to find him, but her mother does not approve it. The hostility of winter
in such a harsh place turns this desire into a real threat: freezing in the middle of nowhere.
Going behind the backs of the school authorities and the girl’s mother, her teacher decides
to help her. They set off on this quest for truth, but it is not going to be an easy journey... Their
only clue is a small, rusty plate.

Only in New-York is the story of Arafat Sulliman - a thirty something years old Arab New
Yorker. He still lives at home with his parents who are desperate to marry him off to a
Muslim bride. Arafat is horny and lonely. In order to get rid of his porn addiction he
starts attending SCA (Sexual Compulsives Anonymous) meetings in the city. Comes
Kenny - a single New Yorker - and he becomes Arafat’s sponsor during his recovery
period. One night during a Sex and the City tour in the city, Arafat and Kenny manage
to hook up with two Southern chicks. Arafat takes one of the girls to his parents home.
Father catches them while having sex causing Arafat a big embarrassment and sexual
frustration. After these events, Kenny finally makes his offer to Arafat. A Green Card

La Società Filarmonica “Braccio Fortebraccio” nasce a Montone, piccolo
paese medievale in provincia di Perugia, intorno al 1850 per merito di alcuni
cittadini appassionati per la musica. Da allora non ha mai interrotto l’attività,
tranne nei periodi bellici. Ha sottolineato con la sua presenza i momenti di vita
più importanti per la comunità montonese con servizi e concerti. Ne hanno
fatto parte come musicanti oltre trecento persone. Attualmente è formata da
circa quaranta elementi e dal 1973 è diretta dal maestro Rolando Tironzelli.
The Società Filarmonica “Braccio Fortebraccio” was founded around 1850
in Montone, a small medieval village in the province of Perugia, thanks to a
group of citizens with a passion for music. Since then it has never ceased its
activity, except in times of war. It has marked the most important moments in
the life of Montone’s community with services and concerts. More than three
hundred musicians have been part of it. It currently consists of about forty
elements, conducted since 1973 by Maestro Rolando Tironzelli.

La sezione Umbriametraggi, nata nel 2007 come evento sperimentale, dopo otto anni è diventata una presenza consueta e attesa nella programmazione dell’Umbria Film Festival.
La sezione, in particolare, propone una selezione di cortometraggi di filmmaker umbri, scelti attraverso uno specifico concorso. Una giuria formata da soci dell’associazione Umbria
Film Festival ha selezionato quest’anno, tra tutti quelli inviati, sette corti che avranno la possibilità di essere premiati. Le storie, gli stili, le prospettive e i generi diversi che animano gli
Umbriametraggi offrono al pubblico un ulteriore punto di vista sulle vie e sulle sperimentazioni del cinema indipendente. Esperti, appassionati e curiosi possono così trovare nel borgo umbro,
tra il teatro e la piazza, tra i vicoli e gli scorci panoramici, un luogo d’elezione per nuovi spunti, incontri, scambi e contaminazioni.
The Umbriametraggi (Umbria Filmmakers) section, introduced in 2007 is now an established and much anticipated event in the Festival’s programme.
The final presentation of 7 short films by Umbrian filmmakers has been selected after an initial competition by a panel of jurors .The different stories, styles, perspectives and genres presented
at Umbriametraggi offers the audience another point of view on the trends and experimentations of independent filmmaking. The setting for this unique festival is the medieval Umbrian town
of Montone, renowned for its history, panoramic views and delightfully winding streets. Here in its piazza, people not only view the films, but interact with one another, exchange ideas, open
themselves to the stimulation of the new while gathering to share a common interest.

Luigi brutally discovers that not only has his wife betrayed him, she has murdered her lover who

Daniel Acht
Dal 1993 al 1996, Acht ha partecipato a vari laboratori teatrali e di regia. Ha poi lavorato come assistente alla regia
per diversi cortometraggi e pubblicità. Nel 2011 ha fondato
la società Wolkenlenker insieme a Sebastian Wehner e Christopher Zitterbart. Wolkenlenker realizza prodotti per bambini come film e l’app Karl’s Castle.
From 1993 to 1996, Acht took part in several theatre and film
directing workshops. He then worked as an assistant director
for several short and advertising films. In 2011 he founded
the company Wolkenlenker together with Sebastian Wehner
and Christopher Zitterbart. Wolkenlenker produces Media
for children such as films and the app Karl’s Castle.

Ghazi Albuliwi
Nato a Amman, in Giordania, e cresciuto a Brooklyn, New
York. Ha iniziato a fare stand up comedy all’età di diciassette anni, esibendosi ben presto in importanti club di New

Live, ha deciso di realizzare un film autobiografico dal titolo West Bank Brooklyn. L’anteprima mondiale del film si è

Janis Cimmermanis
Nel 1980 si laurea a Leningrado presso l’Istituto di Teatro,
Musica e Cinematografia e inizia a lavorare come regista
per il teatro delle marionette. Dal 1983 lavora presso uno
studio lettone come animatore e regista di film con marionette. Dal 1993, lo studio diventa una società privata indipendente di nome “ANIMACIJAS BRIGADE” (AB).
In 1980 he graduated from Leningrad Institute of Theater,
Music and Cinematography and started working in Latvian
Puppet Theater as director. Since 1983 works in Latvia Film
studio as a puppet film animator and director. Since 1993 this
puppet film Studio becomes an independent private company – Film Studio “ANIMACIJAS BRIGADE” (AB) .
Natalia Chernysheva
Natalia Chernysheva è nata in Russia nel 1984. Si è laureata
presso l’Accademia Statale d’Arte e Architettura degli Urali,
specializzandosi in grafica e animazione. Ha lavorato come
animatrice, disegnatrice e artista in diversi film d’animazione. Snowflake è il suo debutto come regista.

Wouter Dierickx
Wouter Dierickx è nato in Belgio nel 1961. Ha studiato animazione presso il St. Lucas Institute di Bruxelles, in Belgio, dal

Sotir Gelev

Abigail Greenwood
Abigail Greenwood è una regista emergente di Auckland
in Nuova Zelanda. Negli ultimi dieci anni ha lavorato come
attrice, regista di teatro e assistente costumista nel cinema,
nel teatro e nella televisione neozelandesi. Eleven è il suo

Miko Lazic è un regista svedese di origini serbe, nato a Stoccolma nel 1968. Ha diretto due lungometraggi: Made in

Matías Lucchesi
Matías Lucchesi è nato a Cordoba, in Argentina, nel 1980.
Ha frequentato diversi corsi di studi di teatro, drammaturgia
e cinema. Nel 2007 ha girato il cortometraggio Savana e nel
2009 Distancias, premiato come miglior cortometraggio al
Festival di Biarritz. Ha scritto anche sceneggiature per lungometraggi, tra cui Raiz. Ha collaborato con Gonzalo Salaya
alla scrittura delle sue ultime due sceneggiature: El Pampero, che verrà girato a novembre 2014, con Julio Chavez, e
Ciencias Naturales, completato nel 2013 e vincitore del Primer Corte di Ventana Sur.
Matías Lucchesi was born in Cordoba, Argentina in 1980.

Maxime MALEO, Aurélien PREDAL
Max Maleo ha lavorato per Dreamworks ed è stato animatore per Cattivissimo Me presso Mc Guff /Illumination, mentre Aurélien Predal è visual development artist presso Aardman e ha lavorato in film come Un mostro a Parigi. Il loro
lavoro precedente, Burning Safari, è stato un cortometraggio di discreto successo, realizzato mentre frequentavano

Katell QUILLÉVÉRÉ

Justin Rasch and Shel Rasch
Shel e Justin Rasch sono animatori di stop motion. Il loro ultimo film, Gerald’s Last Day, ha vinto numerosi premi ai festival

Shel and Justin Rasch are stop motion animation film makers,
their last film Gerald’s Last Day won many awards at film festivals all over the world. With over 16 years of professional

including the recent Oscar Nominated feature film Paranorman, and Sponge Bob’s Christmas Special. He graduated

widely commissioned and she is a recipient of the Lester
Horton Award. Together, Justin and Shel own production
company Stunt PuppetPictures, which is currently producing
several projects including pre-production on a new Stop Motion Animation Feature Film and a Video Game. Justin and
Shel live in Los Angeles with their three continual motion kids.
Ivan Sen
Alla fine degli anni Novanta, Sen ha lavorato in numerosi
cortometraggi prima di fare il suo debutto cinematografico
con Beneath Clouds nel 2002. Il film è stato acclamato in
tutto il mondo, vincendo un Orso d’Argento al Festival di Berlino 2002 e un premio al miglior regista agli Australian Film
Institute Awards 2002, ed è stato proiettato al Sundance Film
Festival 2003. Sen ha in seguito scritto e diretto una serie di
pluripremiati documentari. Il suo documentario Yellow Fella
è stato proiettato nella sezione Un Certain Regard al Festival
di Cannes nel 2005. Nel 2008 Sen ha avviato la produzione
del suo secondo lungometraggio sperimentale, Dreamland,
girato in Nevada, negli USA. Nel 2011 Sen ha completato il
suo terzo lungometraggio, Toomelah, ambientato nel lontano nord, a ovest del New South Wales, luogo di origine della
sua famiglia e delle sue radici aborigene. Toomelah è stato
selezionato nella sezione Un Certain Regard al Festival di
Cannes 2011 e ha partecipato ai concorsi del Sydney Film
Festival 2011 e del Melbourne Film Festival 2011. Ha vinto
numerosi premi internazionali, tra cui il premio UNESCO agli
Asia Pacific Screen Awards. Nel 2012 Ivan Sen è stato insignito del prestigioso Byron Kennedy Award agli Australian
Film Industry Awards (AACTAS).
Throughout the late 1990s Sen worked on numerous short
films, before making his feature film debut with Beneath
Clouds in 2002. It won Sen global acclaim, winning a Silver
Bear at the 2002 Berlin Film Festival, Best Director at the 2002
Australian Film Institute Awards and screened at the 2003
Sundance Film Festival. Sen has subsquently written and directed a number of award winning documentaries. His documentary Yellow Fella screened in Un Certain Regard at
the Cannes Film Festival in 2005. In 2008 Sen commenced
production on his experimental second feature Dreamland.
In 2011 Sen completed his third feature Toomelah, set in the
far north, west of New South Wales, where his Aborigional
roots and family come from. Toomelah was selected in Un
Certain Regard at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and played
in Competition at the 2011 Sydney Film Festival and at the
2011 Melbourne Film Festivals. It has won a number of inter-
national awards, including the UNESCO Award at the Asia
Pacific Screen Awards. In 2012 Ivan Sen was honoured with
the prestigious Byron Kennedy Award at the Australian Film
Industry Awards (AACTAS).
Ted Sieger
Ted Sieger è nato nel 1958 e cresciuto in Cile, Perù, Australia
e Svizzera. Prima di iniziare a fare film, ha viaggiato molto
e ha svolto ogni tipo di lavoro: ha perfino contato le uova
in un allevamento di galline ed è andato in Africa su una
nave mercantile. Crea, disegna, scrive, dirige e produce
opere di animazione (cortometraggi, serie TV e presto un
lungometraggio). Ora vive in Svizzera.
Ted Sieger born in 1958 grew up in Chile, Peru, Australia
and Switzerland. Before he started making films he travelled extensively and worked in all kinds of strange jobs, the
best were counting eggs in an egg factory and sailing with
a merchant ship to Africa. He creates, designs, writes, directs
and produces animation (shorts, TV Series and soon a feature). He lives in Switzerland.
Nils SkapÃns
Nils Skapãns è nato nel 1969 a Riga, in Lettonia. Nel 1987 si
diploma alla scuola superiore e nel 1989 inizia a lavorare
nell’animazione. È un cameraman, animatore, sceneggiatore e regista. Nel 1989, tornato dal servizio militare obbligatorio, Nils ha lavorato come direttore della fotografia al Dauka, partecipando alla creazione del primo lungometraggio

di animazione lettone, Ness and Nessy, oltre che di diversi
cortometraggi. Il suo forte desiderio di diventare un esperto
animatore lo ha portato a lavorare per lo studio di animazione di burattini Animãcijas Brigade, erede del leggendario regista di burattini Arnolds Burovs. Lo studio ha creato
molte serie, e il film Let’s fly!, parte della serie sugli strani animali Munk e Lemmy, ha fatto vincere a Nils Skapãns e al suo
team l’Orso di vetro della Giuria dei Bambini alla Berlinale
1995. Al fine di esplorare nuovi orizzonti e utilizzare nuovi
materiali, nel 2000 Nils ha creato un suo marchio, Nilsons.
Nel 2005 Nils Skapãns è tornato alla Berlinale con il suo film

volta di Wonderful Day. Fino ad oggi ha realizzato più di 30
film, usando da circa un decennio la plastilina come materiale principale per i suoi burattini. Dal 2012 Nils Skapãns e

studio Locomotive Productions. Cat In The Bag è il primo film
realizzato come risultato di questa unione creativa.
Born in 1969 in Riga, Latvia. In 1987 graduated a high school
and from 1989 start working in animation.Cameraman, animator, script writer and director. In 1989, after coming back
from obligatory army duty, Nils became a cinematographer
at Dauka and took part in creating the first full-length animation film in Latvia – Ness and Nessy, along with several shorts.
A strong wish to become a powerful player (in the field)
led him to join the puppet animation studio Animãcijas
Brigãde – inheritors of the work of the legendary puppet
film-master Arnolds Burovs. From 1993 to 1999 at Animãcijas
Brigãde, the name Nils Skapãns can be found in film credits
as scriptwriter, director and animator. Many series were created, and the film, Let’s fly! – part of a series on the strange
animals Munk and Lemmy, in turn brought a special animal
to Nils Skapãns and his team – the Glass Bear the Berlinale
Children’s Jury awarded the film in 1995. In order to discover
new horizons and use new materials, in 2000 Nils created
his own brand, Nilsons, operating under the wing of the Juris Podnieks Studio. Nilsons has made more than 10 films for
young and old, using a sense of humour, wooden blocks,
figurines, clay and other materials. In 2005 Nils Skapãns returned to Berlinale with his Listen, Rabbit? ... Daddy goes to London. In 2010 – it was Wonderful Day. He has made more than
30 films to date, and has used plasticine as the main material
for his puppet animation for a decade or so. Since 2012 Nils
Skapãns and Nilsons works with producer Roberts Vinovskis
at his studio Locomotive Productions. Cat In The Bag is the
first film, completed as a result of this creative union.
Péter Vácz
Péter Vácz è nato nel 1988 a Budapest, in Ungheria. Ha conseguito la laurea di primo grado (2010) e specialistica (2012)
in animazione presso l’Università di Arte e Design MoholyNagy con i suoi film Streamschool e Rabbit and Deer, vincitori di oltre 50 premi internazionali, tra cui una Menzione
Speciale al Young Directors Award di Cannes Lions, Miglior
Sceneggiatura ad Anima Mundi e il Premio della Giuria Junior ad Annecy. Durante i suoi studi alla MOME ha frequen-
tato l’ASF, un laboratorio di animazione europeo, e un corso
professionale di animazione di personaggi 3D a Viborg, in
Danimarca. Dal 2013 Péter lavora per lo studio di animazione londinese Picasso Pictures come direttore commerciale
e fa parte di un gruppo internazionale di cineasti chiamato
Caravel Collective, con sede nel sud della Francia.
Péter Vácz was born in 1988 in Budapest, Hungary. He graduated from Moholy-Nagy University of Arts and Design
in Animation BA (2010) and MA (2012) with his film called
Streamschool and Rabbit and Deer which has won over 50
awards at international festivals including a Special Mention
in Cannes Lions at the Young Directors Award, Best Script at
Anima Mundi and the Junior Jury Award in Annecy. During
his studies at MOME he attended ASF – The Animation European Production Workshop and took the Professional 3D
Character Animation Course in Viborg, Denmark. Since 2013
Péter is represented by the London based Picasso Pictures
animation studio as a commercial director and he is part of
an international group of filmmakers called Caravel Collective based in the South of France.

Questa XVIII° edizione dell’Umbria Film Festival di Montone, si avvale

2014 del festival prevede il coinvolgimento di otto studenti del corso di laurea
triennale in Mediazione Linguistica Interculturale e del corso di laurea
Magistrale in Traduzione (Elisa Balboni, Matilde Bravetti, Valentina Colò, Elisa
della Sala, Carlo Alberto Miani, Jessica Jane Nocella, Mara Nunziatini, Eva
Thoenes) che sotto la supervisione della Dott.ssa Antonini, hanno realizzato i
sottotitoli in italiano delle opere presentate al Festival.
This 18th edition of the Umbria Film Festival of Montone, will avail itself of

supervision, eight students of the first cycle degree in Intercultural and Linguistic
Mediation and of the second cycle degree in Translation (Elisa Balboni, Matilde
Bravetti, Valentina Colò, Elisa della Sala, Carlo Alberto Miani, Jessica Jane
Nocella, Mara Nunziatini, Eva Thoenes) have subtitled into Italian all the foreign

Nel complesso del sistema audiovisivo italiano, i
festival rappresentano un soggetto fondamentale
per la promozione, la conoscenza e la diffusione
della cultura cinematografica e audiovisiva, con
un’attenzione particolare alle opere normalmente
poco rappresentate nei circuiti commerciali come
ad esempio il documentario, il film di ricerca, il
cortometraggio. E devono diventare un sistema
coordinato e riconosciuto dalle istituzioni pubbliche,
dagli spettatori e dagli sponsor. Per questo motivo e
per un concreto spirito di servizio è nata nel novembre
2004 l’Associazione Festival Italiani di Cinema
(Afic). Gli associati fanno riferimento ai principi di
mutualità e solidarietà che già hanno ispirato in
Europa l’attività della Coordination Européenne
des Festivals. Inoltre, accettando il regolamento,
si impegnano a seguire una serie di indicazioni
deontologiche tese a salvaguardare e rafforzare il
loro ruolo. L’Afic nell’intento di promuovere il sistema
festival nel suo insieme, rappresenta già oggi più di
trenta manifestazioni cinematografiche e audiovisive
italiane ed è concepita come strumento di
coordinamento e reciproca informazione. Aderiscono
all’Afic le manifestazioni culturali nel campo
dell’audiovisivo caratterizzate dalle finalità di ricerca,
originalità, promozione dei talenti e delle opere
cinematografiche nazionali ed internazionali. L’Afic si
impegna a tutelare e promuovere, presso tutte le sedi
istituzionali, l’obiettivo primario dei festival associati.
Film festivals are very important to the Italian audiovisual
system in order to promote, spread and teach about
cinema and audiovisual culture, for they pay particular
attention to works that are shown very little in the
commercial circuits--documentaries, research films,
and short films. Film festivals should become a well
coordinated system, recognized by public institutions,
sponsors, and audience. Therefore, in November 2004,
the Italian Cinematographic Festival Association (AFIC)
was founded to coordinate and give assistance to the
festivals. The members are inspired by the principles
of solidarity and mutuality that are at the base of the
Coordination Européenne des Festivals de Cinéma.
Furthermore, by accepting the regulation, members
pledge to follow deontological indications to preserve
and strengthen their role.
In order to reach its goal, today AFIC represents more
than thirty Italian cinema and audiovisual events to
help coordinate and spread information amongst the
different cultural events.The audiovisual events that are
AFIC members have purposes of research, orginality,
and promotion of talents as well as national and
international cinematographic works. AFIC aims to
protect and promote the main objective of the festivals
in all institutional offices.
