THE ALICE PROJECT
A documentary by Matteo Passigato on three pilot schools based on a new Educational
Paradigm. A. Bocconi: “The New Pedagogy for the Third Millennium”. Un documentario di

“The multicultural Alice Project School in India was established in 1994 by
two Italian educators, Valentino Giacomin and Luigina de Biasi, in Sarnath, twelve kilometers from
Varanasi, the holy city and a symbol of India. Initially, there were only 75 students and four teachers.

“La Scuola multiculturale del Progetto Alice in India è stata fondata nel 1994 da due
pedagogisti Italiani, Valentino Giacomin e Luigina de Biasi, a Sarnath, a dodici chilometri da Varanasi, la città sacra e simbolo
dell'India. All’inizio, c’erano soltanto 75 studenti e quattro insegnanti.
Today, after 17 years of tireless work, the school has set up a recognized school, which has one thousand
students and 43 teachers. The classes cover the entire course of study, ranging from nursery school to
university /Oggi, dopo 17 anni di instancabile attività, la scuola è un istituito scolastico parificato, che conta un migliaio di studenti
e 43 insegnanti. Le classi coprono l’intero ciclo di studi e vanno dalla Materna all’Università.

In 2001 a third school was opened in Bodhgaya, that is now partly self-managed by students./ Nel
2001 è stata aperta, a Bodhgaya, una scuola che è ora in parte autogestita dagli studenti.
A third school, for the Chakma ethnic minority, is located in the State of Arunachal Pradesh (see
photo below).
Una terza scuola, (vedi foto sotto) per la minoranza etnica chakma, si trova nello Stato dell’Arunachal Pradesh..
The methodology of the project, which respects all spiritual paths, has been successfully adopted by the
Aghoreshwar school in Varanasi, Tergar monastery in Bodhgaya and by some Tibetan schools in
Ladhak. Previously, teachers in Italy, Taiwan, America, Colombia and France were working with the

pilot project related to Alice Project. La metodologia del Progetto, che rispetta tutti i sentieri spirituali, è stata adottata con
successo dalla scuola Aghoreshwar di Varanasi, dal monastero Tergar di Bodhgaya e da alcune scuole tibetane in Ladhak. In
precedenza, altri insegnanti si erano impegnati con progetti pilota legati al metodo Alice in Italia, Taiwan, America, Colombia e
Francia
But what is the Alice Project? The Alice Project is based on a revolutionary idea transformed into
educational practice. "Teach them to know the mind and heart. Based on this knowledge, students
will love the environment and the people around them, acting with awareness." Ma che cosa è il
Progetto Alice? Il Progetto Alice si basa su un’idea rivoluzionaria trasformata in pratica educativa.:
“Insegnate a conoscere mente e cuore. Sulla base di questa conoscenza, gli studenti sapranno amare l'ambiente e le
persone che li circondano, agendo con consapevolezza”.

The method has been called "The New Pedagogy for the Third Millennium" by prof. Andrea Bocconi,
psychotherapist, writer, a prominent advocate of Psycho synthesis in Italy. Shankaracharya, the highest
authority of the Hindus, said that the school illuminates the lives of the students by bringing them into the
divine world that is in their hearts. Why Alice Project? Alice in Wonderland is a famous story written by
Lewis Carroll. A girl, bored by school texts, falls asleep and does a fantastic journey through her
subconscious, led by a white rabbit./ Il metodo è stato definito "La Nuova Pedagogia per il terzo Millennio" dal
prof. Andrea Bocconi, scrittore, psicoterapista, esponente di rilievo della psicosintesi in Italia. Shankaracharya, la massima
autorità degli Induisti, ha detto che la scuola illumina la vita degli studenti portandoli nel mondo divino che si trova nel loro
cuore..

. Perché’ Progetto Alice? Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie è una famosa storia scritta da Lewis Carrol. Una ragazzina,
annoiata dai testi di scuola, si addormenta e compie un fantastico viaggio nel suo subconscio, guidata da un bianco coniglio.
In the same way, the students of the Alice project are invited every day to explore their wonderful inner
world, the origin and nature of their thoughts and their emotions. The Wise Rabbit was chosen as the
mascot of the school and of Alice Project’s stories. He represents the Guru who guides the students –
beyond conflict and separation, through meditation, introspection and the proper way of knowing. It leads
to the discovery that the world is not as it seems and that we are a great indivisible whole. Anche gli studenti
del Progetto Alice, ogni giorno, sono invitati ad esplorare il loro meraviglioso mondo interiore, l’origine e la natura dei loro
pensieri e delle loro emozioni. Il Coniglio Saggio è stato scelto come mascotte della scuola e delle storie del Progetto Alice.
Rappresenta il Guru che guida gli studenti oltre i conflitti e le separazioni , attraverso la meditazione, l'introspezione e il
corretto modo di conoscere. E porta alla scoperta che il mondo non è come appare e che siamo un grande Tutto
indivisibile.

Then, as Alice, the students return to normal life in the classroom to continue a different journey in the
world of appearances, through the scholastic books, but with a new knowledge. Poi, come Alice, gli studenti
ritornano alla vita normale, in classe, per continuare un viaggio differente, attraverso i libri delle materie scolastiche, nel
mondo come appare, ma con una nuova e acquisita consapevolezza..
Thus, as noted by the Vice Chancellor of Sanskrit University in Benares, “the school combines a modern
teaching with attention to spirituality and moral values”.
What are the results after many years of research and experience?
The results, according to tests carried out by prof. Sharma of the University of Benares, show a marked
improvement in relation to those obtained in the experiment in Italy. A huge difference has emerged in
India between the students of Alice and those of other schools, particularly on attention, memory,
awareness, tolerance, discipline and socialization. Almost no bullying. The validity of the long Alice
Project research has been recognized by the Indian academy community and international researchers.
In questo modo, come ha osservato il Rettore dell’Università di Sanskrito di Benares, “la scuola unisce un insegnamento moderno
con l’attenzione ai valori morali e alla spiritualità.”
Quali sono i risultati dopo tanti anni di ricerche ed esperienze?
I risultati, secondo i test effettuati dal prof. Sharma dell’Università di Benares, mostrano un sensibile miglioramento
rispetto a quelli già ottenuti nella sperimentazione in Italia. Una differenza enorme è emersa in India tra gli studenti di Alice
e quelli di altre scuole, soprattutto in merito all’attenzione, alla memoria, alla consapevolezza, alla tolleranza, alla disciplina
e alla socializzazione. Quasi assente il bullismo. La validità della lunga sperimentazione del Progetto Alice è stata
riconosciuta dal mondo accademico indiano e da alcuni ricercatori internazionali.

The Italian President Giorgio Napolitano has
given Valentino the title of "Knight of the Order
of the Star of Italian Solidarity" by the merits in
the field of international cooperation and humanitarian commitment. The Sanskrit University of
Benares has awarded twice the founders of the
schools, Valentino Giacomin and Luigina de Biasi.
Il Presidente della Repubblica italiana Giorgio Napolitano ha nominato Valentino “Cavaliere dell’Ordine delle Stella
della Solidarietà Italiana ”per i meriti nel campo della cooperazione internazionale e dell’impegno umanitario. Per due
volte l’Università di Sanskrito di Benares ha premitato i fondatori delle scuole, Valentino Giacomin e Luigina de Biasi.
The second award was conferred on 2008 by the Vice Chancellor of Sanskrit University, in the context of celebrations organized for the golden
jubilee of the prestigious University (which was founded 150 years ago!). Many scholars and poets also from other Universities were present. The
ceremony lasted three hours! About 100 Alice Project students were also present. Here the award - motivation, translated from Sanskrit.
"We confer an award to honor Valentino Giacomin, a social worker for Sarvhaumik Shikshshtam Sanskrit Vidyalaya
University, and founder of Alice Project Universal Education Schools in Sarnath and Bodhgaya, as well as several
countries around the world, based on the development and wisdom of non-dualistic educational methodology. V.
Giacomin’s experimental education research, lasting two decades, successfully demonstrates the powerful therapeutic effects of this pedagogy, inspired by the cognitive deconstructive theory known in ancient time as Maya, or the
wrong perception of reality. The Alice Project – Universal Education methodology integrates the knowledge of the
traditional disciplines along with the wisdom of transpersonal psychology (beyond the self). V. Giacomin’s extensive
research – made in cooperation with his partner Luigina de Biasi - scientifically and practically proves that the new
generations of the ‘global villagè whom engage in Universal Education methodology could certainly find a positive
solution not only to their personal problems, but also to the dramatic crisis of the environment (global warming, pollution, drought, famine…) and social unrest through a more rational and realistic way of thinking. We consider the
Alice Project Universal Education proposal a revolutionary educational method which – in the short term – can cure
and prevent psychological distress and behavioral disorders of students, and - in the long term- can help them to
achieve personal and social existential happiness. Through this award we wish to render homage and acknowledge
the very successful A.P.U.E. Educational method and research." / Traduzione della motivazione del premio conferito nel
2005. Conferiamo un riconoscimento per onorare Valentino Giacomin, psicopedagogista, operatore sociale e ricercatore presso l’Università SARVBHAUMIK SHIKSHASHRAM SANSKRIT MAHA VIDYALAYA – Universal Education Progetto Alice, di Sarnath e Bodhgaya, per il suo eccezionale contributo
nel settore dell’educazione, attraverso l’insegnamento, gli scritti, la leadership, il servizio sociale e la ricerca sulla mente, il processo di ricostruzione
cognitiva e la proiezione con la finalità di introdurre un nuovo paradigma scientifico nell’educazione, per spiritualizzare la pedagogia. Attraverso questo riconoscimento noi desideriamo rendere omaggio alle sue idee pregnanti, alla creatività e al successo nel suo lavoro nelle scienze dell’educazione
e la loro pratica attuazione (in India e in altri Paesi) basata sulla tradizione dell’India, la sua cultura, spiritualità e filosofia. Infine, noi crediamo che le
sue intuizioni – se messe in pratica – potrebbero migliorare non soltanto il sistema educativo dell’Indiama anche, in generale, l’ordine nel mondo.”
The schools don’t receive any state subsidies and survive only thanks to the generosity of the sponsors.
The Alice Project is also involved in numerous social activities for women, girls, the most disadvantaged
and persecuted social classes and ethnic minorities, such as the Chakma people.
Le Scuole non ricevono sovvenzioni statali e sopravvivono soltanto grazie alla generosità degli sponsors. Il Progetto Alice è impegnato
anche in numerose attività sociali a favore delle donne, delle bambine, delle classi sociali più svantaggiate e delle minoranze etniche
perseguitate, come i chakma..

I chakma sono profughi buddhisti provenienti dal Bagladesh. Perseguitati dalla maggioranza musulmana, migliaia di chakma
furono costretti a cercare rifugio in India dopo la partizione che portò alla formazione del nuovo stato del Pakistan.L’India,
grazie alla sua tradizionale apertura e umanità, li accolse senza pregiudizi e con generosità’.
But their living conditions remain dramatic.
They live in a wonderful natural environment,
but very unfriendly, close to the forests of the
National Park. Very few are recognized as
Indian citizens. They are stateless, they do not
have rights or hope for a better future. The Alice
Project has opened 3 hostels for them: in
Sarnath, Bodhgaya (with the help of Bolzano
Region) and one in Bodhisatta, for girls of the
villages.
Ma le loro condizioni di vita rimangono drammatiche. Vivono in un ambiente naturale meraviglioso, ma inospitale, vicino alle
foreste del Parco Nazionale. Pochissimi sono riconosciuti come cittadini indiani. Gli esclusi sono senza Stato, senza diritti,
senza speranze per un futuro migliore.Il Progetto Alice ha aperto 3 ostelli per loro: a Sarnath, a Bodhgaya (con l’aiuto della
Regione di Bolzano) e uno qui, a Bodhisatta, per le bambine dei villaggi.
At the end of this short documentary we would like to mention two quotations: one of the Bishop of
Varanasi and the last from HH the Dalai Lama, who has twice visited the school of Sarnath.

Ven. Raphy Manjaly, Catholic Bishop said: "Today, there is a great need of school like the Alice Project,
whose goal is integrated development of children. The students of this school will become good citizens in
the future, which gives us hope that a good world will be formed.”

His Holiness The Dalai Lama, after observing that the children of Alice have a special light in their eyes,
concluded: If we think from other hand, this is something like a pilot project. This is something a new
system which is like a role model for others. Therefore, it is very important.”. Il Dalai Lama, dopo aver
osservato che i bambini di Alice hanno una luce speciale nei loro occhi, ha concluso: “Se riflettiamo bene, questa scuola
è un progetto pilota. È un nuovo sistema educativo che può svolgere la funzione di modello per altri.”
