IL BERRETTO FRIGIO
Il Berretto Frigio (pileus) è un simbolo dalla lunga tradizione.
Attributo del dio Mitra, usato poi dall’esercito persiano, era nell’Antica Roma
il copricapo donato agli schiavi liberati: da qui molto probabilmente
il suo valore simbolico di libertà.
In Canavese lo si ritrova alla fine del 1300 nella rivolta popolare
del Tuchinaggio; nelle antiche stampe che raffigurano gli abitanti dei dintorni
di Ivrea, i contadini sono rappresentati con il Berretto Frigio rosso.
Il Berretto Frigio entra nell’ufficialità del Carnevale nel periodo napoleonico.
Oggi lo si indossa dal Giovedì Grasso non solo per evitare di essere oggetto
di lancio durante la Battaglia delle arance – secondo l’Ordinanza del Generale
– ma soprattutto per manifestare il proprio coinvolgimento e la propria
partecipazione attiva.
THE PHRYGIAN HAT
The Phrygian Hat (pileus) is a symbol which dates back to ancient times.
It was one of the attributes of the god Mitra, then adopted by the Persian
army, and in Ancient Rome it was the hat given to freed slaves:
hence its symbolical value of freedom.
In the Canavese it was found in the late 1300s in the people’s Tuchinaggio
rebellion and in old prints showing peasants living in the area around Ivrea,
wearing a red Phrygian hat.
It became an official part of Carnival in the period of Napoleonic rule.
Today it has to be worn from the Thursday before Lent,
not only to avoid being chosen as a target during the traditional Battaglia
delle arance – as dictated by the tradition and by the General’s Orders –
but above all to show one’s full participation in the event.

Storia e storie di Carnevale – Bambini al Centro
Gioco a squadre Il Giro del Carnevale in 80 domande!,
lezioni di Battaglia delle arance su un vero carro da
getto, L’accademia piccoli ufficiali, imparare a fare
l’Abbà; esposizione “I carri da getto dal Landau al
futuro”. E in attesa di Expo 2015 degustazione dei cibi
di Carnevale: fagioli grassi e polenta e merluzzo con
laboratori per i bambini.

Un percorso a tema nei luoghi di Carnevale, con
partenza dalla mostra permanente sotto i portici di
piazza Ottinetti, per immergersi nella sua storia e nei
suoi rituali e prepararsi a viverlo con l’entusiasmo di chi
lo conosce a fondo. E’ un progetto in collaborazione con
studenti e docenti del Liceo Botta. Appuntamento allo

Terra di Carnevale
La famosa terra rossa di Castellamonte dà corpo
alla tradizione del Carnevale. I personaggi, gli oggetti
simbolici, i colori e gli animali che animano il corteo
storico sono i soggetti delle opere che un gruppo
selezionato di artisti ha creato con un mix di stili e
tecniche diverse e che sono al centro della mostra
organizzata per la prima volta dall’Associazione Artisti
della Ceramica in Castellamonte.
Inaugurazione il 1 febbraio ore 18. La mostra resterà
aperta l’8 febbraio dalle ore 10 alle 19, il 7 febbraio dalle
15 alle 19, dal 2 al 6 dalle 10 alle 18.

Le squadre degli aranceri a piedi espongono i loro

Scritti, parole e tracce visive del nostro Carnevale
Lo Storico Carnevale di Ivrea è rinomato per la
sua tradizione di verbalizzare le cerimonie che lo
compongono. La mostra è l’occasione per vedere
i Libri dei Verbali, custoditi dal Gran Cancelliere,
e a tutti gli scritti che nel tempo hanno parlato di
Carnevale: un immenso patrimonio di parole fatto di
giornali, cartoline, riviste illustrate, programmi della
manifestazione, proclami ed ordinanze del generale.
La mostra, al Museo Civico Garda, sarà inaugurata
domenica 8 febbraio alle ore 18 e resterà aperta
fino all’8 marzo con orario 9-13 dal lunedì al venerdì.
Apertura straordinaria sabato 14 febbraio dalle ore
14.30 alle 18.30.

Carnival history and stories – Focus on Children
Around the Carnival in 80 questions! – team game,
orange-throwing lessons on a real orange-throwing
cart, the young officials’ academy, learning how to be
an Abbà; Orange-throwing carts from the Landau to
the future exhibition. And in anticipation of Expo 2015,
tasting of Carnival food: “fat” beans, cod with polenta,
and workshops for children.
The Historical Carnival of Ivrea venues – 10 a.m.
A theme trip through the Carnival venues, starting from
the permanent exhibition under the arcade of piazza
Ottinetti, discovering the history and rituals of Carnival
so as to be ready to live it with the enthusiasm of those

Carnival Clay
The famous red clay of Castellamonte gives body to
the Carnival tradition. The characters, symbols, colours
and animals that bring to life the Carnival parade are
the subjects of works of art, created by a select group
of artists using a mix of different styles and techniques,
featured in an exhibition organized for the first time by
the Castellamonte Association of Ceramic Artists.
Inauguration on 1st February at 6 pm. The exhibition
will be open on 8th February from 10 am to 7 pm, on
7th February from 3 pm to 7 pm, and from 2nd to 6th
February from 10 am to 6 pm.

The orange-throwing teams on foot display their gadgets
and take enrolments for the Orange Battle.

The carts take up their positions at 10 am in corso
Massimo d’Azeglio, parade through the city streets (via
Palestro, piazza di Città, corso Cavour, Borghetto, Porta
Torino, corso Nigra, Lungo Dora) and are presented
officially in piazza del Rondolino.

Documents, words and images of our Carnival
The Historical Carnival of Ivrea is famous for its
tradition of writing down the records of all of the
ceremonies involved. The exhibition is an opportunity
to see Records Books kept by the Grand Chancellor
and all the documents that over the years have talked
about Carnival; a vast heritage of words, made up of
newspapers, postcards, magazines, event programmes,
and the general’s announcements and decrees.
The exhibition held in Garda Civic Museum will be
inaugurated on Sunday 8th February at 6 pm and
will remain open until 8th March from 9 am to 1 pm,
Monday to Friday. Special opening on Saturday 14th
February from 2.30 to 6.30 pm..

Nei giorni di Carnevale presso il Bar Movida,
Bar Piemonte, Bar Roma, Monastero e la postazione
della Croce Rossa nei giardini di corso Cavour sono
allestite aree dedicate ai più piccini: un fasciatoio
rifornito di tutto il necessario per il cambio del
pannolino, offerto da “Bimbotta il tuo spaccio di
Pannolini”, ed una poltrona per l’allattamento
attendono bimbi e mamme.

On all days of the Carnival, special areas have been set
up for the tiny ones at Bar Movida, Bar Piemonte, Bar
Roma, Monastero and the Red Cross aid station in the
park on corso Cavour: babies and mothers will find a
changing table with everything you need for nappychanging, provided by “Bimbotta il tuo spaccio
di Pannolini”, as well as a nursing chair.
Turismo Torino e Provincia invites tourists to a guided
tour with an itinerary that follows the history of the city
and of its monuments, interwoven with the legend
of the Historical Carnival.

Non andate mai in giro senza il Berretto Frigio:
a parte la brutta figura, potreste pentirvene.
Non portate il Berretto Frigio adagiato
sulla spalla: è come non averlo e in più potreste
perderlo. Attenzione: indossare un altro
berretto rosso che non sia quello frigio è segno
di non aver capito nulla del Carnevale di Ivrea!
Corteo Storico
Non attraversate il Corteo Storico: è un gesto
veramente maleducato.
Non avvicinatevi troppo al carro della Mugnaia in
movimento: le ruote sono pesanti, la Scorta… di più!
Non chiedete caramelle e mimose quando il carro
della Mugnaia è fermo: il lancio avviene solo
in movimento.
Non spingete e non urtate i Pifferi: sono molto
suscettibili… e il legno di bosso è duro!
Non buttate roba nei tromboni della Banda:
è una nota stonata.
Non parlate a voce alta durante la Marcia Funebre:
è pur sempre un funerale!

Tutti stanno lavorando per voi: rispettateli!
Fate quello che vi dicono, altrimenti vi manderanno
in-volontariamente a quel paese.

Non accarezzate i cavalli: non è detto che andiate loro a genio!
Non mettetevi davanti ai cavalli: potrebbero decidere di partire senza dirvelo.
Non mettetevi dietro ai cavalli: potrebbero scalciare senza avvisarvi.
Non sostate vicino ai cavalli: hanno i paraocchi e non vi vedono.

E’ vietato percorrere con i passeggini via Palestro, piazza di Città, Borghetto

Berretto Frigio (Phyrigian Hat )
Never go out without your Berretto Frigio:
apart from making a poor show, you might
regret it. Don’t leave your Berretto Frigio lying
on your shoulder: it’s as if you don’t have
it on and you might even lose it. Be careful:
wearing a red hat that isn’t the true Phyrigian
style means you’ve got Ivrea Carnival all wrong!
Historical Parade
Don’t cross the parade: it is extremely rude to do so.
Don’t get too near to the Mugnaia’s
(Miller’s daughter’s) coach while it’s moving:
the wheel’s are heavy and the Escort is even heavier!
Don’t ask for sweets and mimosa when the Mugnaia’s
coach is stationary: she only throws them
when it’s moving.
Don’t push or jostle the Pifferi (Pipers):
they’re very touchy… and boxwood is hard!
Don’t throw anything into the bells of the brass
band instruments: it’s off key.
Don’t talk during the Funeral March:
after all it is a funeral!

Volunteers
Everybody are working for you:
respect them!
Do what they say, otherwise they will involuntarily
tell you where to go.
Patience is endless… but not at Carnival!
Horses
Don’t stroke the horses: they may not necessarily like it!
Don’t stand in front of the horses: they might decide to set off without telling you.
Don’t stand behind the horses: they might kick out without any notice.
Don’t stand around near the horses: they have blinkers and can’t see you.
Don’t let children or strollers pass between you and the horses.
Be careful with strollers
It is absolutely forbidden to walk with pushchairs and prams in via Palestro,
piazza di Città, Borghetto and all the areas involved in the Battaglia delle arance.
