実際の会話では、want to（～したい）という表現は、
「ウォント・トゥ」ではなく、
「ワナ」
と一語のように聞こえることがよくあります。また、スクリプトでも実際の発音通りに
wannaと一語に綴られることが多くあります。このように音が変化してしまう例は、他に
もgoing to ⇒ gonnaや got to ⇒ gottaなどがよく知られています。これらはドラマの中で
も繰り返し出てきますから、発音に慣れておきましょう。
なお、wannaなどは略式の表記方法ですから、英文を書く際にはwant toと書くようにしま
しょう。

≪am/is/are + -ing≫の形は現在進行形と呼ばれ、「～している」のように、今実際にし
ていることだけではなく、決まった予定や何度も繰り返されている動作を表すこともあり
ます。次の例文で使い方を確認しましょう。

≪打ち明ける際に使える表現のポイント≫
What’s up?
MITCHELL: All right, look. I - I - I never told my family we were adopting a baby.
CAMERON:
I know.
ドラマでは、不機嫌な理由をキャメロンに尋ねられたミッチェルが養子の件を家族に話
していなかったことを打ち明けていました。自分から相手に打ち明ける際には、次に挙げ
るような表現が前置きとしてよく使われます。
・I have something to talk to you about.
・I have something to tell you.
・I need to talk to you about something.
いずれも「話さないといけないことがあります」といった意味を表し、言われた方は、
通常 “OK. I’m listening.” などと言って、話を聞きます。この他にも、嘘をついていたこ
となどを「白状する」意味で打ち明ける場合には、“I have a confession to make.” といっ
た表現も使われます。

今回取り上げた場面では、ミッチェルとキャメロンが養子の件で話し合っていました。打ち明ける表現
や現在進行形を含んだ次の会話を完成させましょう。
CAMERON:

（わかっているよ）
MITCHELL:

CAMERON:
（ああ、無理もないよね）（君のお父さんのことは知っている）

Exactly.（親父はいつも僕のことを批判ばかりするんだ）

今回の場面では、機内で乗客の “Look at that baby with those cream puffs.” という
発言を耳にしたミッチェルがひどく怒っていましたが、なぜだかわかりましたか？
cream puff にはシュークリームという意味の他、「女々しい奴、意気地なし（a weak
or timid person）」という意味もあり、ミッチェルは自分とキャメロンのことを cream
puffs だと言われているように誤解したからです。実際にはリリーはシュークリーム
を手にしていたわけですが、英文を見ただけではどちらにも解釈できますね。
ちなみに、日本語のシュークリームはフランス語の chou à la crème（クリーム入
りのキャベツ）がなまったもので、皮の形がキャベツに似ているところからこの名が
あるようです。
同様に、lemonという単語にも果物のレモンの他に「駄目な人、欠陥品、失敗作」
のような悪い意味がありますので注意が必要です。
