Für die Münze Österreich AG ist die World Money Fair 2014 ein besonderes Ereignis, dürfen wir uns doch anlässlich unseres 820. bzw. unseres 25. Geburts tages als Ehrengast dieses wichtigen Zusammen treffens der gesamten Münzwelt präsentieren. 1194 wurde die Münze Österreich gegründet, 1989 in eine Aktiengesellschaft umgewandelt und 2014 feiert auch unser wohl bekanntestes Produkt, der Wiener Philharmoniker, sein 25-jäh riges Jubiläum. Die Entscheidung, unsere Goldbullionmünze der einzigen Sprache, die wir weltweit verstehen – der Musik – zu widmen, war eine gute Entschei dung. About a year ago it looked as if Europe‘s largest collector country would abolish the reduced tax rate on cultural goods and collectibles by 2013/1/1. Now this new regulation takes effect from 2014/1/1. As a matter of course, we were particularly concerned with this issue over the past year. Indirekt sollte dieses Urteil auf ganz Europa aus strahlen und hat auch in den USA schon Anerken nung gefunden. Originally, the year had started out well with an important success for collectors all over the world. The Federal Financial Agency of Germany ruled that antique and old coins shall not require an exportation permit and are not considered to be archeological objects. In an indirect manner, this decision is bound to have an effect on the whole of Europe. It has in fact been positively acknowledged in the United States. The Mint was organized as a corporation 25 years ago, and its minting presses first released the gold bullion coin ‘Vienna Philharmonic’ 25 years ago. Am Anfang steht eine abenteuerliche Räubergeschichte. The history of minting in Austria began in the 12th century. At the outset is a medieval adventure story. Der Babenberger Herzog Leopold und der engli sche König Richard gerieten Ende des 12. Jahrhun derts in Streit. Nach mittelalterlicher roher Sitte nahm Herzog Leopold den englischen König bei seiner Durchreise in Haft und verlangte für die Freilassung 15 Tonnen Silber. Richard Löwenherz zahlte und mit dem Lösegeld in Silber wurden im Jahre 1194 die ersten Münzen ausgeprägt. Das war die historisch verbriefte Geburtsstunde der Münzprägung in Österreich. Erst 200 Jahr später wird die Wiener Prägestätte urkundlich erwähnt. The Babenberg Duke Leopold VI and Richard I, King of England, had a quarrel. The Austrian duke, displaying the rude manners of the age, captured the English king who was crossing through his territory. He asked for a ransom of 15 tons of silver for releasing him again. Richard the Lionheart was ransomed and the silver was processed by the mint, striking its first coins in 1194. There is historical evidence that coin making started that year. Für mich ist die Graveur-Abteilung der Geburtsort ei ner Münze, Kreativ-Tempel, Seele und Herzstück einer Münzstätte zugleich. So auch in Wien. Die Gedenkmünzen aus Österreich sind bekannt für allegorisch hervorragende Darstellungen. Die Umsetzungen der Motive sind besonders samm lerfreundlich. Ihre Münzgestalter genießen weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus einen hervorra genden Ruf. Zu den Auszeichnungen für Thomas Pesendorfer ist auch der Vreneli-Preis von 2005, eine von der Fachzeitschrift MünzenRevue verlie hene Auszeichnung für außerordentliche numis matische Leistungen zu zählen. Having been a teacher at the Basel School of Design for 33 years, what I most enjoy whenever I visit a mint – and I have been to roughly 120 mints around the world in the past 40 years – is spending time in the design department. For me, the engravers’ workshop is the place where a coin comes into being, a temple of creation, and both the heart and soul of a mint. The same is true for the Vienna mint. In 1990, the Vienna Philharmonic led sales already in European bullion market. According to the World Gold Council, the Philharmonic was the world‘s bestselling coin in 1992, 1995, 1996 and 2000. About the design Thomas Pesendorfer, today head engraver at the Austrian Mint, created the Philharmonic‘s design. The obverse features eight characteristic orchestra instruments: Five string instruments in the front, behind them a French horn, a bassoon and a harp, with the legend ‚Wiener Philharmoniker‘ above in a half circle.
