翻訳にあたってのヒント その 77 I was first prize? 日本人が英語を話したり書いたりする場合、 「○ is …」 「△ is …」 「□ is …」と be 動詞 を連発する傾向がある。中には海外旅行中に「私はコーヒー」を”I am a coffee.”と言った人 もいるとかいないとか。とかく適切な動詞を使えないのが日本人英語の特徴である。 今回は、「一等（一番、最高、トップ）」を題材にいろいろと書き連ねることにする。 まず冒頭に書いたことをいいたいのなら、”I won first prize.”と英語ではいい、この場合 には賞金や賞品がつく状況を指す。他の言い方としては、 「I took (won, came in, got in) first place. 一等だった」 「I finished in the first place. 一等でゴールインした。 （競技などで）」 ともいえる。また、どうしても be 動詞を使いたいのであれば「I was first. 一等だった」 で十分通用する英語となる。 ほかにも「一等（一番、最高、トップ）」を表す言い方は多数あるが、以下のような表現 がよく使われている。 成句編： ○ is better than any other ....s ○は、～の中で一番（最高）である。 ○ is by far the best of all the …s ○は、～の中でもとびきり（ダントツ）である。 ○ is doubtlessly the best in the market. ○は、市場では（間違いなく）最高のものだ。 ○ is the best in every respect (or in every way). ○は、あらゆる点で最高（一番・最 良）だ。 ○ is second to none. ○は、どこにも（誰にも）引けをとらない（トップである）。 ○ leads all others in … ○は、～の分野でトップに立っている。 ○ is at the head of the class in … ○は、～の分野でトップである。 ○ ranks top among …s for △. ○は、～の中でも△がトップである。 ○ is the world leader in … ○は、～の分野で世界のトップに立っている。 ○ is the prettiest girl in town. ○は、この辺りじゃいちばんのカワいい娘だ。（「the 最上級 … in town」はちょっとおどけた言い方で、 「町では、この辺では、内輪では一番～ である」の意味。） 形容詞編： ◆ (a) top-level ◆ top-grade ... 第一級の、一流の、最高級の～ ◆ a top-class ... トップクラスの、最高位の、最高級の、最上級の～ ◆ (a) top-notch ... ◆ top-ranked ... トップレベルの、最高水準の、最高級（位）の、首脳級の～ 第一級の、一流の、最高級の～ 最高の、ベストの、極上の、最良の、一流の～ ◆ top-ranking ... ◆ top-rated ... ◆ top-name ... 一流の、第一級の、最高位の～ 最高級の、第一級の～ 最高クラスの、トップレベル（トップランク）の、著名な、有名な、 一流の、屈指の、大物の～ ◆ top-quality ... ◆ the No. 1 … ◆ A-list … 最高の品質の、最高品位の、最優良の、最高級の～ トップの、首位の～ トップクラスの、非常に優秀な、最も影響力（人気）のある～ When it comes to ..., ABC is on the A-list. ～となると、ABC は超一流だ。 ※ (an) A-lister（名詞）大物、トップクラスの人、大物俳優（女優）など また俗に言う「世界一（日本一） 」は、「業界一の～、業界トップ～」のことを指してい ることがままあり、そのまま「世界一（日本一）～」を英語に訳すと不適になる場合があ ることをお伝えしておく。 例文： industry-leading ... 世界一の（業界トップの～） ： ① Its reported return on sales comes nowhere close to ABC's industry-leading 20.1 percent return in its last fiscal year. the industry top-class ... 世界一の（業界トップの～） ： ② The "CCC" ABC-series is the industry top-class room air-conditioner for the 21st century. ③ the industry's top(-)level (...) 世界一［業界トップクラス］（の～） ： High efficiency of 99.8%, the industry's top level, is the result of efforts to contribute to environmental protection by reducing environmental impacts. ○ aiming to achieve the highest among the domestic ... companies 日本一（業界 ④ トップクラス）を目指した○： Specifically, we aim to solidify the business base of the XYZ Group centered around total energy business and seek new growth while tackling various business challenges such as the improvement of the efficiency aiming to achieve the highest among the domestic electric power companies. ⑤ 最上級 … in its class 世界一（クラス）最小・最軽量の～： Smallest and lightest body in its class ※ 「最高」を表す面白い表現 ● This is five stars out of five. これは最高だよ。 ● This really hits the spot! これは最高だね。 （これに限るね、もってこいだ、申し分 ない、ぴったりだ） ● That's money. そりゃ最高だ。（俗語） ● She is money (fresh). 彼女は最高さ。（俗語） ● That's bananas. それは最高にいい。 （俗語） 以上これにて第 77 回目終了。
