山口県立華陵高等学校 KARYO WEEKLY SEIZENSETSU OR SEIAKUSETSU? Do you think humans are born good or evil? An ancient Chinese thinker, Mencius (Moushi) believed in the goodness of human nature, while Xunzi (Junshi) said humans were born evil, so they should be disciplined. I’m sure many more people have come to believe in the goodwill of humans, thanks to the heartwarming “Tiger Mask” movement. I have believed that most people are good-natured for many years. I’ll tell you why. It was about 20 years ago, when cell phones were not so popular. I did not have one, so I often used telephone booths. One day I was driving with my friend on an express way and entered the service area to buy some souvenirs. I didn’t find anything good, so I gave up shopping and began to drive again. When I tried to pay at the toll gate, I found my wallet was not in my bag. My friend paid for the toll, but I was in a state of panic. When I came home, I searched in my car only to find I had really lost my wallet. I wondered. I didn’t buy anything at the service area, so I couldn’t have taken out my wallet then. When did I open my handbag? Suddenly I remembered I had opened it in the telephone booth. I didn’t think I had left it there, but I called the service area. The clerk said, “I’ve got a wallet in lost property, but now it is in the police station.” I phoned the police 親愛なる華陵高校の生徒たちへ こんにちは。今週は、松井純子先生が自らの体験について書いて下さいました。みなさんは、 No.299 もし財布を落としたとき、その財布が元どおりに戻ってくると思いますか? それとも、戻っ FREE てくるわけないと思いますか? and managed to get back my wallet safely, although I had to go through a lot of procedures. Some years later, I had a similar experience. How careless I am! I went shopping in the department store and when I came back home, I found I had lost my handbag, which should have been in my car. I was sure I had it when I got into my car in the car park, because if I hadn’t had my bag, I would not have had my car key with me. I wondered if I might have dropped it when I closed the door of the car. I went back to the car park and looked around there. A car park attendant came up to me and said, “Are you looking for something?” I replied, “Yes, I may have dropped my bag around here.” He asked me to describe it, and finally I got back my bag. I offered him a finder’s reward, but he wouldn’t accept it. I always thought lost property could not be returned. So when I had the first experience at the service area, I thought it was a rare case, a kind of miracle. However, I had got back my lost handbag again, and I felt ashamed that I had not believed in the goodness of people. Almost all people are good-natured! Now I can tell you, “Don’t worry, if you lose something. It will return to you,” though you should not be as careless as I. During the first three years after birth, only 50 copies were printed every week. Since April, 2006, however, every one of you has been receiving a copy so that you can take it home and read. Some of you don’t like this, because they find Karyo Weekly too difficult. However, on January 20, I listened to a speech that tells us why it is important to keep on reading Karyo Weekly. It is with great pleasure that I share with you in our No. 300 issue the following lovely speech presented by our senior student Yuho Shiokawa. –By Wiseman Plumfield GRADUATION SPEECH Time has gone so fast. I just cannot believe that our lovely Karyo school life is coming to an end. It was difficult for me to think of just one topic for today’s speech, because there are so many memories that I can’t count them all. But, I really want to thank Karyo for giving me a lot of opportunities to use English. I can say that all of my English skills in grammar, vocabulary, listening and reading absolutely improved compared with when I was a first-year student. Though there ar6 3-64e many reasons for this, one of them is Karyo Weekly. Look at this!! This is how many we have read. I looked through some of the articles, and I remembered my dear school days. There are some people who are no longer at Karyo: Brett, Meen, Heidie, Chris, Sarah, Ms. Hashimoto, and Mr. Yoshihiko Yamada, for example. We met many English teachers, ALTs and exchange students. I guess this wouldn’t have happened if I were not a student at Karyo. To tell the truth, when I was a first-year student, I thought it was too difficult for me to read one article every week. Of course, now I don’t think so. I can read smoothly. In addition to improving our English, the contents of Karyo Weekly are interesting and fascinating. For example, we get to read ALTs’ travel stories, advice on how to study English, exchange students’ stories, and Mr. Kataoka’s family series. Are there any books that tell you such stories? I think there is no other English book like Karyo Weekly. So, let’s read the last few articles, and please also look back at the articles we have read so far. I’m going to keep on studying English at university. Because of Karyo, I love English, and I’d like to study it more and more. Karyo is the first step of my English life. I strongly hope that you are when you read this letter. Do you remember your history of playing the violin? When you were three years old, you took a small violin called ‘1/16 violin’ for the first time. You had to practice the violin with your mother every day, and you were always scolded. You thought, “Mom is a scary demon!” and you said, “My hands will fall off!” while you played the violin. You didn’t play the violin well at first, but it has grown on you. When you were nine years old, you entered your first contest: The Contest for Students in Yamaguchi. It was at that contest that you got first prize and started thinking, “I want to do my best in the future!” Then you participated in contests every year, sometimes going on to national conventions. When you became a high school student, you got busier than ever. You had to not only play the violin but also study. You were always sleepy. Do you remember that you sometimes slept on the floor, leaving your violin, made in Italy in 1654, thrown on the floor? The floor was comfortable and cold in the summer, but it was too cold in the winter. Either way, you hurt your back the next day… You have various memories of playing the violin. I hope you will continue playing the violin until you die and do not waste all of your hard work! Can I carry on? I think you should open your mind widely. When you were just a girl in the spring of life, you were a little selfish. Sometimes your expectations were too high for you to succeed. Do you remember how high your ideals were? For example, when you were sixteen, your ideal boyfriend had to be gentle, clever, compatible with you, taller than you, a little cool, funny, play sports, play the piano, a good mood maker… Do you think that this person exists on the earth? I was told, “That person never exists!” or “If you have too high expectations, you will never marry!” I appreciate these opinions. I think having high ideals is important but if they are too high, you can’t feel a sense of achievement. But, on the other hand, too high ideals may be just good for you… You idled and changed into a sloth during long vacations every year when you were a student. You also need to repay your parents, who have spent a lot more money on you than on your four brothers and sisters. So, you’d better stop sleeping on the floor and try not to catch cold.
