Preparation for the EJCA Summer Festival - AKA the
Natsumatsuri - is well underway. The goal of this event is
to create awareness of Japanese culture by providing a
traditional Japanese summer festival experience for
people in the greater Edmonton area on July 9th 3 - 8 pm.
What does that mean? Children’s games, beer, festival
food, decorative lanterns, bon odori dancing, and karaoke,
along with much more - did I mention beer?
Whereas I am obviously excited about the beer gardens,
the Natsumatsuri is truly a family event with a lot of work
going into having Japanese games for the kids and prizes.
Food will be provided by professionals and vendors will be
selling goods as well. So, if you stop reading at this point, I
want to make sure at least you have decided to attend
our first ever Natsumatsuri - this event is being created
with you in mind, so we want you there to tell us how we
did.
Now, for you truly amazing people who sat down with this
article and decided to read it through to the very end, I
have a favor to ask. We’re looking to run this event a bit
differently than we usually do. Rather than call on our
steady go-to volunteers for the whole event, we’d like to
have more volunteers give us a few hours of their time.
This way everyone, including the volunteers, can enjoy the
beer… I mean event. I mean everyone can enjoy the
event and have a chance to wear your Yukata.
Request for Volunteers: If you can give some of your
time during the Natsumatsuri, we can ensure that
everyone can participate. We need people to do pretty
straightforward tasks like sell food tickets, help with games,
serve food, set up/clean up help and so on. If you or
another adult/ teen in your family can give us some time
during the festival, please go to the last page of this
newsletter, select tasks and time slots to let us know.

ＥＪＣＡ夏祭りニュース

７月９日午後３時から８時までのＥＪＣＡ夏祭りの準備が着々と進んで
います。何で夏祭り？とおもいますか？ＥＪＣＡではエドモントン市民
に夏祭りを通して日本文化への興味を高めようと思っています。ＥＪＣ
Ａセンターの隣の提灯を飾った広場で盆踊り、子供のゲーム、カラオ
ケなど楽しい行事をします。お祭りの食べ物の屋台もあります。そし
てビールもあります。
夏祭りは家族で楽しむのが一番！子供のゲームには賞品もでます。
屋台はプロの料理店の出店もあります。ＥＪＣＡの最初の夏祭りにぜ
ひ、ご家族でおいでください。ゆかたを着ていらしてくださーい！
さて、ＥＪＣＡから会員の皆様にお願いがあります。夏祭りを手伝って
くださる方を募集しています。いつもＥＪＣＡの行事を手伝う方の他に、
新しいボランティアは大歓迎です。お祭りの当日にちょとだけ、お手伝
いをお願いします。例えば、食べ物の切符を売ったり、会場の整備を
したりです。お祭りは十分に楽しんでいただけます。手伝っていただ

! EJCA History Project Is Now Completed !
祝ＥＪＣＡ歴史プロジェクト完成

Yes, you read it correctly, the EJCA History Project is
finally completed. The Final Report has been printed and
bound. As described in the March 2016 edition of Moshi
Moshi, the report will be available to EJCA members and
other interested parties on June 1 at the EJCA Centre.
After 6 ½ years of "blood, sweat and tears" and with the
production of the second (and final) report, "EJCA
Community Survey 2013: Results and Individual Histories",
the project is now officially completed. For those unable to
wait till print copies are available, electronic versions of
the report can be downloaded for free from two websites:

150 hard copies are made. They are being sent to various
depositories, libraries and cultural centres, in Edmonton,
Alberta, Canada and Japan, as well as being made
available in the library at the EJCA Centre. To receive a
free hard copy, please see "How to receive a hard copy"
at the end of this article.
Launched in January 2010, the History Project was
designed, developed and managed by the History
Committee. Membership on the committee went through
minor changes:
Phase 1 – Rick Hirata (Chair), Cathy Tennant, David Sulz,
Jim Hoyano, Sanae Ohki;
Phase 2 – Cathy Tennant (Chair), David Sulz, Sanae Ohki,
Jim Hoynao, Daiyo Sawada;
Phase 3 – Sanae Ohki (Chair), Cathy Tennant, David Sulz,
Jim Hoyano, Daiyo Sawada.
Many individuals, groups and organizations contributed to
the completion of the project:
 The EJCA Board of Directors for guidance and
direction,
 Interviewers and translators who gathered and
processed narratives,
 Those who contributed their data and shared
their stories,
 The Edmonton Heritage Council for providing
grant support for printing, binding and distribution,
 Members of the History Committee for countless
hours seeing the project through to completion.
The next phase is the submission of the final report to the
EJCA Board of Directors.
We hope that the report will be useful not only for planning
future services of the EJCA, but also for the "historical
baseline" in charting and nurturing the ongoing narrative
of "Japaneseness" in the formation of community in the
Edmonton area.

激！感激！です。最終報告書が印刷され本になりました。そして、６
月１日にセンターで配布を始めます。配布方法はこの記事の下方「最
終報告書の配布」に詳細が載っています。このプロジェクトの完成ま
でには６年半の面白くそして時にはつらい日々がありました。しかし、
このたびの「２０１３年個人歴史の記録」の出版をもってプロジェクトは

会、インタビューをした人、インタービューの記録を翻訳した人、いろ
いろなデータ、写真を提供した人、個人の経験を話した人、エドモント
ン市伝統遺産委員会（最終報告の出版費用）、そして歴史プロジェク
ト委員会などです。
報告書をＥＪＣＡ役員会に提出すれば、プロジェクトは正式に完了しま
す。歴史プロジェクト委員会としては、この報告書がＥＪＣＡの将来の
行動計画を作成するときに役立って欲しいと願っています。またエド
モントン地区の｢日本的な所、日本らしさの根源｣を探るときの出発点
になって欲しいとも願っています。そして、我々委員の任務を終了す
るにあたり、我々の子供や孫の世代が、この報告書に記述されたエド
モントン地区の｢日本的な所、日本らしさ｣を基盤にして、自分たちの
生活の中にまた新たな｢日本的な所、日本らしさ｣を付け加えていって
欲しいと願っています。そして将来またＥＪＣＡ歴史プロジェクト委員会
が結成されて、次の世代のシニアーがサヨナラを言う前に記録を取っ
ておこうと思い立ったとき、この報告書を読み返してみて、得る所があ
れば、これほどうれしいことはありません。
最終報告書の配布
歴史プロジェクト第三段階最終報告書１００部余りを２０１６年６月１日
からＥＪＣＡセンターのオフィスで、エドモントン日本文化協会会員に無
料で配布します。配布の優先順位と手順は次の通りです。
（１）
歴史プロジェクト調査に参加した会員に一家に一部に限り
６月１日から６月３０日までの間に希望者先着順に配布しま
す。オフィスで受領書にサインしてください。
（２）
６月３０日以降、報告書が上記（１）の配布の後にまだ残っ
ていた時に限り、歴史プロジェクト調査に参加いていない会
員に一家に一部に限定してに配布します。このためには６

In discharging its duties as the History Committee of the
EJCA, members of the committee are hopeful that the
"portraits" of the community provided in the report might
serve to stimulate and even enrich future narratives that
our children and grandchildren will live as they co-create
the "Presence of Japaneseness in the Edmonton area".
Perhaps a future "History Committee" of the EJCA might
find the report interesting and useful in revealing and
retelling the ongoing story of Japanese-connected life in
Edmonton before the next round of seniors waves goodbye.
How to receive a hard copy (as announced in the March
2016 issue of Moshi Moshi):
(1) Those who have responded to Part 2 of the survey
can pick up a copy at the EJCA Office on a first come,
first served basis, one copy per family between June
1 and June 30, 2016. Please sign a receipt form.
(2) If there are copies left over after (1) above, those who
have NOT responded to the Part 2 of the survey can
pick up one copy per family after June 30. To do so,
please add your name on the “Report Sign-up Sheet
for Non Survey Respondents” at the EJCA office on
and after June 1, 2016. The report will be distributed
according to a first listed, first served basis.
(3) Those who have responded to the survey and picked
up a copy according to (1) can get an additional copy
when any copies are still left over after (1) and (2)
after June 30. To do so, you can sign up an
"Additional Copy for Survey Respondents" sign-up
sheet when you pick up your first free copy. Any
leftover copies will be distributed according to a first
listed first served basis.

President’s Corner

On behalf of the Edmonton Japanese Community
Association, we wish to extend our sincere condolences to
the people of Kumamoto, Japan for the loss of life and
damage to property. We also wish to give our support to
the evacuees of Ft McMurray, all of the first responders
including the firefighters and other rescue personnel, and
the police services for their courageous efforts.
“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible;
and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
These words from Francis of Assisi epitomizes the
mammoth effort to battle the wildfires in Ft McMurray. We
were shown the courage and selflessness and
professionalism exhibited by the first responders. We were
also shown the generosity, kindness, and compassion of
Albertans and Canadians from coast to coast to coast.
EJCA members have a long history of showing their
compassion and generosity during times of great need.
Donations made to support the victims of the 2011
Japanese Tsunami and the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake
are recent examples of EJCA members showing their
humanity and kindness. Mark Saturday, June 11, 2016
(5pm to 9pm) on your calendar as Kita No Taiko is putting
on a fund-raiser to raise funds for both Kumamoto and Ft
McMurray catastrophic events, details in page 13.
Many EJCA members have committed to doing what’s
possible by donating to or fundraising for these disasters.
It is amazing what can be accomplished when everyone
contributes to doing what is possible! I am proud of our
members who reach out and help others during times of
need.

エドモントン日本文化協会を代表して、熊本地震の犠牲者のご家族
の皆様に心からお悔やみ申し上げます。またフォートマクマレイの山
火事で避難生活をしている皆様に声援を送るとともに、山火事からの
避難を成功させるために尽力した消防、警察その他の皆様に感謝い
たします。
「先ずは必要なことをせよ、次に可能なことをせよ、そうすると突然不
可能なことまでもしていることに気づくであろう。」これはアッシジのフ
ランチェスコの言葉ですが、フォートマクマレイからの人々の安全な避
難を可能にした人達の活躍そのものを記述しているように思えます。
また、避難生活者にさまざまな支援の手をさしのべているカナダ全国
の人達の活躍にも感銘を受けます。
ＥＪＣＡの会員もこのような時には困っている人達の支援をしてきまし
た。２０１１年の東日本大震災津波被害の後の募金活動もその一例
です。このたびの熊本地震、フォートマクマレイの山火事でも「北の太
鼓」が６月１１日（土曜）午後５時から９時まで、援助金募集のための
慈善公演をします。詳しくはこの「もしもし」の 13 ページのお知らせを
お読みください。

カルガリー日系人協会と寿会（シニアーの会）は共同で２０１６年度カ
ナダ日系人協会年次総会と会議を主催します。年次総会は９月９日
（金曜）午後２時に始り夕方までに終了します。９月１０日（土曜）は一
日の会議を開きます。テーマはカナダ日系人の伝統文化遺産、人権
問題、ビジネスネットワークの三つです。会議終了後に第一次世界大
戦に義勇兵としてカナダ軍に参加した日系カナダ人の１００年祭記念

The NAJC AGM will start at 2pm on Fri Sept 9 . The AGM
will conclude at the end of the day.
Saturday, September 10, 2016 will feature a one-day
National Conference with three streams of sessions:
Heritage, Human Rights and Business Networking. The
day will be capped by a Banquet commemorating the

100 anniversary of Japanese Canadian volunteers in
World War I.
Sunday, September 11, 2016 will conclude with a half-day
session for NAJC delegates, which will wrap up by noon.
The Japanese Canadian Young Leaders Conference
(JCYLC) will host their own sessions as well as participate
in the entire conference on Saturday and Sunday. This is
an opportunity for Japanese Canadian young people to
remember the past, recognize the present, and re-imagine
the future of the JC community! By prioritizing dialogue
and empowering young people through workshops,
heritage tours, panels, and intergenerational discussions,
the JCYLC offers a unique opportunity for young
Japanese Canadians to develop, inspire, and lead Nikkei
communities across the country.

to delegates planning to attend the National Conference

Separate fees will be charged to those wishing to join the
optional tours or the Friday night hospitality event. Those
charges have yet to be determined.
The Calgary conference will be the third in a series of
annual events organized by the JCYLC.
For the hotel, a website will be set up to allow for self
booking of hotel rooms. A special room rate of $129 per
night for single/double/triple/quad occupancy has been
negotiated. This rate will be available from Thursday,
September 8 to Sunday, September 11. As a suite hotel,
all rooms will have at minimum 1 queen or 2 double beds,
and a sofabed in a separate room. With taxes, the final
charge should be $145 per night per room.

NAJC-Suzuka University Japan Study Scholarship
カナダ日系人協会―鈴鹿大学日本研究奨学金プログラム
The National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC)
and Suzuka University (Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture,
Japan) has established a scholarship program for
university students to participate in a 4-month program to
study at Suzuka University in Japan to improve their
Japanese language proficiency and to experience
Japanese culture and education. Program begins
September, 2016. Application deadline: June 15, 2016.

奨学金プログラムを２０１６年９月から開始します。カナダの大学生が
対象で日本語の上達のために鈴鹿大学で４ヶ月日本語を学びます。
また日本の文化、教育を体験する機会にもなります。今年度の奨学

Special Recognition to Our Clubs and Members

In October 2015, our ever-reliable Facility Manager, John
Priegert experienced a health issue and needed some
time off to recuperate. The EJCA board commenced a
process to find a temporary replacement as the facility is
heavily used and would require daily attention.
In the interim, the Board asked Club members who use
the facility to clean up after their use, stack tables and
chairs, and basically help keep the facility clean (main
entrance; bathrooms; meeting rooms; kitchen; main hall).
Thankfully, Carol Rushworth offered to keep the centre
open and take over many of John’s duties during his
recuperation.
Remarkably, John was able to return to work very quickly
but with limited duties. In the meantime, it was no surprise
that club members took it upon themselves to keep our
centre tidy and clean. However, it was a very pleasant
surprise to learn that many clubs and members continue
to help out to this day.
The EJCA Board of Directors recognizes the following
clubs for their assistance:

Goshindo jujitsu club for weekly garden raking;

Kita no Taiko for mirror cleaning, and floor and
bathroom washing;

Iaido club for floor sweeping;

Karate clubs for floor sweeping and furniture moving;

Library volunteers for carpet vacuuming and garden
weeding; and

Nihongo Kaiwa for other gardening.
There are also many other individual members who pitchin when the occasion demands and their efforts are also
very much appreciated.

ＥＪＣＡクラブと会員の皆様への特別感謝

２０１５年１０月にセンターマネジャーのジョン・プリガートさんが急に病
に倒れ、休養が必要でした。いろいろなクラブと個人が頻繁に使用す
るＥＪＣＡセンターではマネジャーの仕事は一日も欠かせません。ＥＪ
ＣＡ役員会は直ちに臨時マネジャーを探し始めました。またセンターを
使用するクラブに出来るだけ自分たちで、会場に使うテーブル、椅子
などの管理、掃除などをするようにお願いしました。そしてキャロル・
ラッシュワースさんが臨時マネジャーの役を引き受けてくれました。
幸いにもジョンの回復は早く、仕事の内容に制限がありますが、仕事
に復帰できました。たくさんのクラブは現在でもマネジャーの仕事の
負担を軽減するような努力を続けています。ＥＪＣＡ役員会はここに次
のクラブの助力に感謝いたします。







日本語会話グループ（庭の手入れ）
上記のクラブの他にも多くの方々が必要に応じてセンターの維持を手
伝っています。ＥＪＣＡは一つの家族のようです。それぞれが必要に
応じて助け合っています。このようなＥＪＣＡを私たち役員会は本当に
誇りにおもい、会員の方々がいかにセンターを大切にしているかがわ
かります。ここにあらためて皆様がセンターの維持に助力してくださっ
ていることに感謝したいとおもいます。
The EJCA community is a very supportive family and it is

EJCA will be holding the 3 Bon Odori Workshop on

Date/time: Sunday May 29 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Location: EJCA Centre.
At the last workshop there was a mixture of dancers of all
ages (including 8 children and 2 more being carried by
parents in baby snuggies). There was also an increase in
the number of men joining in.
The dances have a small number of simple steps that are
repeated to lively music but it’s great exercise for the
body and memory. We have been fortunate to have Yuki
and Carley, members of Kita no Taiko, accompanying the
recorded music and adding to the festival feeling of the
workshops. Our instructors, Keiko Frueh and Yuri Goto,
give easy to follow instructions in Japanese and English
and make sure we are all keeping up.

前回の盆踊り講習会の評判がとても良く、ぜひもう一回講習会を開
こうという要望がありました。次回は

ります。これが陽気な音楽と一緒になり、体にも心にもとてもよい運
動になります。さあ、ご家族、お友達と一緒に参加ください。予約の
必要はありません。

Vancouver who creates both traditional and modern

Stories of Our Seniors 7: Tamiko (Tami) Tsujikawa
(Sarayama)

I was born in Cumberland on Vancouver Island B.C., on
April 14, 1921. My sister Hideko was born two years later in
Cumberland and my two brothers, Masaaki (Mas) in 1925
and Masakazu (Harry) in 1927 were born in a little
lumbering village about 50 miles south of Cumberland
called Red Gap, Nanoose Bay. This is where I was raised
for 14 years until I graduated from elementary school. Then
I was sent to Vancouver where I had to go to Japanese
Language School after high school classes ended for the
day.
In 1908, my father, Wataru (Tom) Sarayama, immigrated to
Canada when he was 13 years old, sponsored by his
parents’ friend who owned a farm near Cumberland where
he had to live until he was 16 years old. Because he had to
start school from Grade 1 at age 13, he hated the fact that
his schoolmates were just little kids. My father resolved to
learn English as quickly as he could and became quite
adept. However, because he always spoke to us in
Japanese, it was many years before we knew that he could
speak English. My grandparents (father’s parents)
immigrated to Canada much earlier. Perhaps they were one
of the earlier immigrants.
Around 1924, after escaping injury when there was a mine
explosion, my father decided to find work elsewhere
because he thought that coal mining was too dangerous. He
heard about a lumber mill a few miles from Parksville about
100 miles from Cumberland called Straits Lumber Company
which was owned by an American. With a vehicle, he pulled
finished lumber to the drying sheds. He was very lucky that
he was able to speak English and was able to drive so he
was spared the heavy labour of carrying lumber on his
shoulder and stacking them in the drying sheds as most
Japanese hands had to do.
Sometimes, when ships from Japan came for the lumber,
the whole Japanese community would take potluck to the
boarding house and treat these sailors to gochiso
(Japanese treats). In the late spring, pods of whales
migrated into Nanoose Bay and spent about a week there.
We’d know when they arrived because at sundown, we’d
hear their whaling noises. We’d row out near them in our
home-made row boats when our parents were absent. The
big ones watched us with their big eyes but never harmed
us. We’d row after the smaller ones when they swam
around; they seemed to be playing with us. We were careful
not to row too close to them but we were not scared at all.
Much later, we learned that the smaller whales were killer
whales from Alaska—then we were scared! Then some
evening, the waters were quiet. We knew their visit was
over and the whales had left us. We felt as though we had
lost our good friends.

私は１９２１年４月１４日にバンクーバー島のカンバーランドで生まれま
した。妹のヒデコが１９２３年に生まれ、弟のマサアキが１９２５年、マサ
カズが１９２７年に生まれました。
妹と弟はカンバーランドから５０マイルほど南のナヌース湾のレッドギャ
ップという小さな、材木を切り出す人達の住む村で生まれました。私は
この村で小学校を卒業する１４才まで育ちました。それから私はバンク
ーバーに行き、中学・高校に通いました。英語の学校の授業の後に日
本語学校に通いました。
私の父のワタル・サラヤマは１９０８年 13 才の時に父の両親の友達で
カンバーランドの近くで農業をしていた人が保証人になってカナダに移
民で来ました。１３才なのに現地の小学校で一年生のクラスに入らなく
てはなりませんでした。父は小さな子供と一緒のクラスが大嫌いで、早
く英語を身につけようと頑張りました。そして英語が達者になりましたが、
家では子供達といつも日本語で話していたので、私は父が英語が話せ
るとは知りませんでした。私の父方の祖父母は父よりずっと早くカナダ
に移民してきました。多分、初期の日系カナダ移民でしょう。
１９２４年に父の働いていた鉱山で爆発事故があり、幸いにも父は無事
でしたが、鉱山の仕事は危険すぎると思い、他の仕事を見つけることに
しました。カンバーランドから１００マイル離れたところにアメリカ人の経
営するストレイト・ランバー・カンパニーという製材所があり、父はここに
就職しました。父の仕事は材木を車で乾燥所まで運ぶ仕事でした。父
は英語を話し、自動車の運転が出来たので、この仕事ができましたが、
当時この製材所で働いていた日本人は材木を背中で担いで乾燥所に
運んで積み上げるという厳しい仕事をしていました。
時々製材所に日本へ材木を運搬する船がきました。このときは製材所
で働く日本人の家で皆でそれぞれに日本食を作って持ちより、船の日
本人船員にふるまい、大変よろこばれました。晩春になるとクジラの群
れがナヌース湾に渡ってきて、一週間ほど滞在します。クジラが来ると
日没に汽笛のような音を出すのでわかります。私たちは両親がいない
のを確かめてから、手製の手こぎボートでクジラの近くまでこぎ出します。
大きなクジラは大きな眼でじっと私たちを見ていますが、私たちを脅か
すようなことはしません。小さなクジラはボートの周りを泳ぐので、私達
はボートで追いかけます。小さなクジラは私たちと遊んでいるようです。
クジラを怖いと思ったことはありませんでしたが、クジラには近づきすぎ
ないように注意していました。ずっと後になりますが、小さなクジラは実
はアラスカから来たキラー・ホヘール（シャチ）だと知って怖くなりました。
そして、ある夕方、湾の水面が静かだなと思うとクジラが既に去った後
でした。友達がいなくなったようで淋しくおもいました。
私たちははとても楽しい、忙しい子供時代を過ごしました。秋にはベリ
ーを摘み、松茸狩りにいきました。貝を拾い、魚を釣りました。大概の家
には大きな菜園が有り、鶏を飼っていたので、私たちは卵を集めました。
主要な食べ物は毎週レッドアンドホワイトという店が注文を取りに来ま
した。生鮮野菜は中国人の行商人が新鮮な果物と中国野菜を売りに来
ました。日本食品はバンクーバーのコムラとフルヤという店が注文を取
りにきました。注文の品物が届くと私たちは有頂天になって喜びました。
私が中学二年の時に、通学のことで問題が生じました。私の中学は家
から二マイルほど離れたパークスビルにありました。父は私に通学用

As children, we were very happy and kept busy. We went
berry picking and in the fall we all went to hunt for
matsutake (pine mushrooms). We went clam digging and
fishing. Most of the families grew big gardens and raised
chickens, so we had eggs. For staples, the owner of the
Red and White store came for orders each month. For
produce, a nice Chinese man would stop with fresh fruit and
Chinese vegetables. For Japanese staples, salesmen from
Komura and Furuya, the Vancouver produce stores came to
take orders. When the order arrived, we were in seventh
heaven!
When I graduated grade 8, attending high school turned out
to be a problem. The nearest high school was in Parksville
about two miles away. Dad had decided to buy me a bicycle
so that I could bike to school but the superintendent of our
school warned my father that the discrimination in the
Parksville area was very fierce. He advised Dad that if we
had a relative in Vancouver, that I would be much happier
there. So Dad asked his brother who owned a grocery store
in Vancouver if he would have room for me. In those days
most of the grocery store owners lived in the back of the
store or upstairs. Most were just large enough for a bed and
small kitchen so it was decided that I’d dine at my uncle’s
but sleep and study in a room rented from a friend of theirs.
For the first month or so, I cried in bed every night. I was
only 15, still a child. After high school, I rushed to catch the
streetcar for my Japanese classes. Fortunately, my mother
taught us to read and write Japanese and we had to use
Japanese at home so I was advanced to the equivalent of
high school.
A few years later when my siblings came for high school,
my uncle helped locate an apartment for us, very close to
the Japanese language school. So there, Mother, 2 brothers,
my sister and I lived until the war started. After graduating
from high school, I wanted to go into nursing but my mother
dashed my hopes. She sent me to a sewing school. My
sister would be sent to business school and she would save
money and rent a storefront where she would start a dry
cleaning store with me sewing dresses made-to-order with
my sister looking after the expenses. That was my Mother’s
plan but the war started and that ended her dream. In the
summer, I worked in the fish cannery, the Japanese
convenience store or bakery. In the winter holidays, I helped
at the fish and grocery store owned by my future husband’s
uncle.
My father was sent to a road camp at Yellowhead. There,
he learned that the whole family would be able to live and
work together if we chose to work in the sugar beet fields in
Alberta or Manitoba. Dad chose Alberta. On May 17, 1942,
we arrived in Picture Butte to work in the beet fields. It was
no picnic! We learned that the Chaki family whose fish
market I used to work at during the school holidays was just
a farm away. George, their nephew visited them one
summer and Mrs. Chaki reasoned that George at 30
was still single and it was about time he married and raised

通うほうが、毎日が楽しいだろうと、校長が父に忠告しました。父はバン
クーバーで食料雑貨店を開いている弟に私が寄宿出来るか訊ねました。
当時の食料雑貨店では店主一家は店の奥の大きな一部屋か二階で生
活して居ました。私は父の弟一家と食事をしましたが、この叔父さんの
友達の家の一部屋を借りてそこで生活しました。最初のひと月は毎晩
さみしくてベッドで泣いていました。私は１５才になりましたが、まだ子供
でした。毎日、現地の学校の授業が終わると、私は急いで路面電車に
乗り、日本語学校に向かいました。母が日本語の読み書きを教えてく
れていましたから、私は高校と同等の上級者のクラスに入ることが出来
ました。
私がバンクーバーに引っ越してから数年経ち、私の妹と弟がバンクー
バーに引っ越して来た時には、叔父がアパートを探してくれました。ア
パートは日本語学校に近く、ここで私は母、弟二人と妹と一緒に太平洋
戦争が始まるまで生活しました。高校卒業後に私は看護婦学校に進学
したかったのですが、母の希望は違っていました。母は私を裁縫学校
に通わせました。妹はビジネス・スクールに行き、卒業後に洗濯屋を開
き、その店で私が注文を取って洋服を仕立てる、妹は店の経営もする、
というのが母の夢でしたが、戦争が始まり、夢は潰えました。
私は夏休みに缶詰工場、日本食料雑貨店、パン屋などで働き、冬休み
は将来私の夫になる人の叔父さんの海産物・食料雑貨店で働きました。
戦時中の日系人強制収容時代に父はイエローヘッドの道路工事に送
られました。父はそこで、アルバータかマニトバの砂糖大根農家に行く
なら、家族が一緒に生活できることを知りました。父はアルバータを選
び、私たち一家は１９４２年５月１２日にピクチャービュートに到着しまし
た。しかし、ここでの生活は決して楽なものではありませんでした。
私たちは、バンクーバーで私が働いたことがある魚屋のチャキ一家が、
私たちの隣の砂糖大根農家に来ていることを知りました。ある夏、チャ
キ家の甥のジョージがチャキ家を訪ねて来ました。チャキ夫妻はジョー
ジも３０才になったのだから結婚して子供を育てる年になったと考え、私
の両親を訪ねてきて、私とジョージの結婚話を持ちかけました。母は大
賛成でしたが、父は気が乗りませんでした。父は私に、私の問題なのだ
から私の好きなようにしたら良いと言いました。私は父の意見に賛成で
した。私は知らない人との結婚などする気はありませんでした。しかし
母は意見を変えません。今、結婚しなければ売れ残ってしまうと言い張
ります。私はついに折れてジョージと１９４４年１２月２６日にピクチャー
ビュートの仏協会で川村和尚の司式で結婚しました。
私はジョージと結婚した翌年の１月末、ジョージの仕事の雛の判別シー
ズンが始まる直前にエドモントンに引っ越して来ました。その後私は息
子二人、デービッドとロンを育て、子供に手がかからなくなると９５ストリ
ートの毛皮専門の洗濯屋で毛皮の手入れの仕事を始めました。私たち
は１９４４年にエドモントンに引っ越して来てからずっとここに住んでいま
すが、途中１３年間だけアサバスカで鶏の孵化場を買って商売をしてい
たことがあります。孵化のシーズンが終わるとエドモントンに戻りました
が、最後の数年は孵化場を売り、モービルホームを買ってアサバスカ
に一年中住んでいました。しかし、ジョージの健康が思わしくなくなり、
エドモントンに戻りました。
ジョージは胸部大動脈瘤破裂で睡眠中に急死しました。とても恵まれ
亡くなりかただとおもいます。その後６年間一人で生活していましたが、
２００７年私が８６才になったときに、もう一人で家や庭の世話をする

a family. Since she knew me, she and her husband came
to ask for my hand for their nephew.
Mom was all for it but Dad hung back. He told me that it’s
my life so I should do what I want. That was fine with me. I
didn’t want to marry a stranger. But Mom insisted—she told
me I’d be a “うれのこり” (“urenokori”-a remnant) and no one
would want to marry an old maid. She insisted I marry
George. Finally I relented. We were married December 26,
1944 at the Buddhist Church in Picture Butte by Reverend
Kawamura.

のは大変だろうという息子の忠告を聞き入れて、家を売り、ウェストマウ
ントの成人専用アパートに引っ越しました。私のただ一匹のペットの猫
は２０１２年に癌になり、安楽死させました。とても悲しかったです。
２０１４年の春に加齢性の筋肉退化症を発症しましたが、１５日ごとの治
療で病気の進行を押さえることが出来ています。２０１６年４月に９５才
になりましたが、まだ自分で食事を用意しています。また小さな庭の世
話もしています。アパートと私に親切にしてくれるアパートの住人も好き
になりました。そしてなによりも私の通う教会が歩いて行ける距離にあ
ることがうれしいです。
We came to Edmonton just before George’s chick sexing
season was about to start—around the end of January. We
raised 2 sons (David and Ron) and when my boys were
older, I worked as a fur finisher in a dry cleaning and fur
th
shop on 95 Street.
I’ve been living in Edmonton since 1944 with the exception
of 13 years in Athabasca, when George bought a chicken
hatchery and started a business of his own. We returned to
Edmonton each year when the season ended, with the
exception of the last few years when he sold the business
and bought a mobile home in Athabasca where we lived for
several years until George’s health started to deteriorate.
George died in his sleep of an aneurysm in an artery in his
heart. For him it was a blessing to die so peacefully.
I carried on until six years ago, when my son insisted that
taking care of the house and yard was too much for me. In
2007, when I was 86 years old, I sold the house and moved
into an adult apartment in Westmount. My pet cat that was
my sole companion developed cancer in 2012 and it was a
sad day for me when I had to put him down. I developed
AMD (Age-related Muscular Degeneration) in the spring of
2014 but I’m being treated every 15 days and that seems to
stay the progression of my disease. In April 2016, I turned
95 but I still cook my own meals and have a small garden to
look after on the apartment property. I’ve learned to love my
apartment and my fellow tenants who are so good to me.
And best of all, my church is within walking distance.
EJCA Centre - Solar panels plan
EJCA Centre will be GREENer!
Yes, the owner of the EJCA Centre, Argyll Community
League, started a plan of setting up solar panels on the
roof of the Japanese side of the building the Centre
building. Refer to the roof diagram- option 1. The
construction will start this summer. The construction will
be fairly quick.

Once it starts producing electricity, it will reduce 14 tonnes
of CO2 in the first year! The initial cost is about $45,000.
They are expecting the return of investment in 15 years or
so.
EJCA 会館の持ち主であるアーガイル・コミュニティ・リーグは会館の
日本側の屋根 (上の見取り図の Oprion 1)に太陽光発電装置を取り
付けることを決めました。夏から工事が始まります。発電が始まると、1
年間で 14 トンの CO2 が減らされるそうです。

Izakaya Evening

Izakayas in Japan are like pubs, serving snack/appetizer
food as well as a variety of alcoholic drinks. The
atmosphere is lively with conversation and filled with the
aroma of delicious food.
For the second year, EJCA’s Izakaya Evening was held in
the hall which was decorated with traditional noren at the
food stations and colourful lanterns. Both years, the event
has been sold out and guests were able to enjoy dishes
that included: salmon/wasabi onigiri, miso makerel, smelts
in vinegar sauce, okonomiyaki, yakitori, chicken kara age,
shrimp fry, shu mai, and dashimaki tamago. “As much as
you want” pickled Daikon (white radish) and white rice
were free. Everything was yummy!
In 2015, we attended the Izakaya evening out of curiosity.
We very much enjoyed the evening and were eager to
attend the second event in 2016. It was not a
disappointment. The second Izakaya evening, held April 9
2016 was as delightful as the first one. The hall was filled
to capacity, the crowd animated and friendly, and the food
provided was delightful. 100 guests and 24 volunteers!
Having been given 5 food tickets each at the door and
having to make choices amongst 11 dishes does provide
a bit of a dilemma, however at our table we swapped and
shared and managed to sample a bit of each of the dishes
served. For someone not familiar with all the various
Japanese dishes this was a great evening experience.
ＥＪＣＡ居酒屋の夕べ
アラン・デービス
居酒屋は英語で言えば一番近い物はパブでしょう。しかし、居酒屋は
お酒だけではなく、酒の肴になる食べ物の多いこと、美味しいことで
はパブの上を行きます。ＥＪＣＡで居酒屋の夕べをしようと企画した人
はすごいです。この人の予想通り、去年も今年も居酒屋の夕べは予
約制で予約は売れ切れでした。今年 4 月 9 日、提灯の飾られたＥＪＣ
Ａのホールは７時の開場と同時に満席になりました。ゲスト 100 人、
ボランティア 24 人です。屋台の食べ物は鮭とワサビのおにぎり、鯖
の味噌煮、スメルトの南蛮漬け、お好み焼き、焼き鳥、チキンから揚
げ、エビフライ、シュウマイ、だし巻き卵、焼きそば、和菓子です。その
ほかに大根の漬け物と白いご飯は自由に食べられます。
お客さんは引換券を五枚貰いましたが、食べ物は１１種類あります。
皆、屋台を眺め、切符を眺め、思案していますが、なかなか何を買う
かきまりません。そのうち、ある人がすごいアイデアを出しました。一
枚の切符で買える食べ物は小皿に複数個のっています。丸テーブル
には８人座っています。皆でそれぞれが５皿づつ、違ったものを買っ
て、テーブルの上に持ち寄れば、これからそれぞれが分けてとり、す
べての１１種類がたべらるというアイデェアです。我々のテーブルは
頭が良いと、自慢しようとして周囲を見合わすと、皆が同じことをして
いました。
今年も居酒屋を企画し、屋台を出してくれた会員に感謝いたします。
私は飲む、食べるだけではなく、新しい友人を作ることもでき、大変楽
しみました。

Recipe from the Izakaya Evening: Pickled Daikon
大根漬け物の作り方
Emiko Kinoshita who made pickled Daikon for the Izakaya
Evening kindly shared her secret recipe with the Moshi
Moshi readers.
居酒屋の夕べで大好評だった大根漬け物の作り方を木下恵美子さ
んがもしもしの読者に特別紹介してくださいました。
Ingredients:
Daikon
Salt
Brown suger
Processed Mustard
Beer
5 kg (about 5 )
1 cup
700 g
100 g
350 cc
1. Peel Daikon
2. Put every item in a plastic bag.
3. Leave the bag at a room temperature for one week.
4. Turn it once in a while.
If you cut Daikon in half, it will be done in 4-5 days.
Leave the bag in a garage as it is smelly while fermenting.

The Matsu no Kai Club meets the 4 Wednesday of each
month, except for December. There is a business meeting
at 11 a.m. followed by some gentle stretching exercises
and a delicious bento lunch. After dessert, there are
activities planned by the social committee. Quite often
these games, quizzes, etc. are based on that month’s
holiday.
In an unusual circumstance, this year’s April’s meeting
was cancelled with the whole executive taking a group
vacation. They are all back now after a week’s recharge
ready to lead the club into spring and summer activities.
The Club did have an outing on April 1. After lunch at
Yuzen Japanese Restaurant in St. Albert, Club members
went to the annual Orchid Show at the Enjoy Centre.
The Club will be participating in the EJCA’s first Natsu

Matsuri Festival on July 9 . At our May meeting,
members will be shown how to make some craft items
which will be sold at the MNK’s table. We will also learn
how to make decorative greeting cards after lunch. On

June 8 , the MNK Club will be going to the Alberta
Legislature Building for tea and a tour. This is an annual
event to mark Seniors’ Week in Alberta. If members are
still hungry after tea then we will have lunch, most likely at
a downtown Japanese restaurant.

ピーター・ワンとルイーズ・ワン
松の会クラブは毎月第四水曜日午前１１時からＥＪＣＡセンターで例
会を開きます。日本料理店から取り寄せた弁当のランチの後でソー
シアル・コミティーが用意したいろいろなアクティビティをします。４月
の例会は執行委員が全員そろって休暇を取るという椿事があり、中
止になりました。全員が充電して休暇から戻ってきたので、活躍を期
待してください。例会は中止ながら、４月の戸外活動はありました。今
回はセイント・アルバータの日本料理店「悠膳」で昼食を取った後にや
はりセイント・アルバータにあるジョイ・センターで行われたランの展覧
会にいきました。
７月９日のＥＪＣＡ夏祭りには松の会も参加します。５月の例会では夏
祭りの時に松の会で展示即売する工芸品の作り方の講習をおこない
ます。また手製の挨拶カードの作り方もならいます。６月８日は州議
事堂の見学とお茶にいきます。これは例年行われるアルバータ・シニ
アーズ・ウイークの行事の一つです。お茶だけではお腹が一杯になら
ないときはダウンタウンの日本料理屋に行きます。７月１６日にノース
ランドに行って昼食を取り、競馬をする、という計画が進行中です。

上ですが、どなたでも年齢にかかわらず例会を訪問できます。現在の

Plans are underway for our annual trip to Northlands on

July 16 for the buffet lunch and horse racing. This may
be the final year that horse racing is hosted at Northlands!
Other summer plans may include a picnic or strawberry
tea social.

persons of any age are welcome to come to our monthly
meetings. To become a member of the senior’s club, you
must be aged 55 years or older. Our members currently
range from 60 to 95 years young and we are a friendly

Hirabayashi Place in Seattle
シアトル市のゴードン・ヒラバヤシ・プレース
The City of Seattle has named its new housing
development project, Hirabayashi Place, in honor of its
former citizen and human right activist, Dr. Gordon
Hirabayahsi. The project is currently under construction
and will be a mixed use, transit oriented, workforce
housing development that includes 96 apartments and a
childcare centre. In 1999, the Colorado National Forest
renamed its former prison camp in Tucson, Arizona where
Dr. Hirabayashi was sent after refusing to be interned, to
Gordon Hirabayashi Campground. Now there are at least
three facilities with Dr. Hirabayashi’s name in the world
including our own the Gordon Hirabayashi Library.
シアトル市は現在建設中の低所得者向けアパート９６戸を含むビル
を、シアトル出身のゴードン・ヒラバヤシ博士を記念して、ゴードン・ヒ
ラバヤシ・プレースと命名しました。コロラド州タクソンにはゴードン・ヒ
ラバヤシ・キャンプグラウンドがあります。これはヒラバヤシさんが強
制収容所に行くことを拒否したときに送られた監獄のあった所です。
これでＥＪＣＡのゴードン・ヒラバヤシ記念図書館を含めて、ヒラバヤシ
さんの名前の付いた施設が少なくとも三つになりました。

 Mr. Ben Shikaze passed away peacefull on March 25,
2016. At the age of 87. Ben served many terms in
