Create a lovely four-season shawlette while exploring the trendy assymetrical shapes

Storm Warning Shawlette with Cindy Webber
Sunday, August 3 1:00-4:00 pm
Have you dabbled in cables but shied away from lace? Or maybe tried your hand in lace
but are now curious about beading? Storm Warning by Liz Corke has all three and is
surprisingly easy. We'll be covering a beading method similar to the crochet hook
method, but much less likely to fray your yarn or get stuck in your bead. And all those
beads make this crescent shawlette sparkle just enough to be the perfect accessory.

Corded Summer Fruit Shawl with Sheryl Thies
Thursday, July 24 6:00-8:00 pm
You may have been in the store and admired Interlacements’ Rick Rack yarn, a drapey,
hand dyed yarn with incredible yardage. Make this fashionable summer shawl with
incredible drape using the Tunisian extended knit stitch (aka corded stitch). Worked from
side to side, increase until you have the length that’s just right for you, then decrease until
you are back to the number of cast on stitches. Check out Sheryl’s lovely, shimmery

Create gorgeous colorwork without the downsides of stranded knitting! Double knitting
has no wrong sides and no floats to manage. It's also double thick, which makes it
fantastic for winter accessories and other times you need some insulation - like the pot

Linden Shawl with Jen Davis

This gorgeous shawl is long enough to wrap comfortably around your shoulders. A
simple eyelet pattern creates a curving line for the body, and a deep knit-on lace edging

Sweater Knitalong with Jen Davis

Join us for our Summer Knitalong (KAL)! Introducing Customfit! a new software that
designs patterns around YOUR body shape. You’ll consult with one of our staffers to
measure your body shape, then use the Customfit software to generate the pattern of your
choice, and bring it to the KAL where we’ll help you get started and keep you knitting.
Attend any or all of the scheduled sessions for support, instruction and fun! Yarn bought

Koolhaas Hat with Sylvie Schuresko

Get a jump start on holiday knitting—this striking hat is a great gift for anyone! You'll
learn about twisted stitches and cabling without a cable needle. The geometric, structural
pattern was inspired by architect Rem Koolhaas, who designed the Seattle Public Library.

There is nothing like a hand knit pair of socks. Using our favorite sock pattern and
learning a few tips and tricks along the way, discover the basics of cuff down sock

Learn the basics of toe up sock construction so you can use every last yard of that special

Stunning Shawls and Scarves
Swirl Shawl with Liz Avery

This pattern is unique and stunning and one of the most looked at and admired samples in
our shop. The scarf (or shawl) is made up of connected hexagons that show off the subtle
color changes of a self-striped yarn, creating a beautiful patchwork appearance. Each

Intro to Entrelac with Liz Avery

This beautiful method of knitting that resembles strips of basket woven knit fabric
is actually quite simple, fun and is a perfect way of showing off self striping yarns.
Liz will show you how to make this lovely scarf and teach you a few tricks along the
way—like how to knit backwards to avoid turning your work and pick up stitches
knitwise and purlwise. Fool your friends that you made something complicated even

Learn how to felt combed wool (roving) while creating unique jewelry. Using only
unspun wool, water, soap, and your own two hands, Liz will take you through the process
of manipulating a lump of wool into a colorful creation of fiber art. All materials

Coffee Education Classes with Head Barista Ben Wineke
Coffee Brewing Methods at Home
Saturday, September 27 9:30-11:00 am
Join Barista Ben in another class about our other obsession—coffee! We know you love
to drink your cuppa joe in our cozy shop, but sometimes you need to brew our freshly
roasted beans at home, too. Learn about brewing with a drip machine, a French press, and
an AeroPress. This class will be jam-packed with tips on cleaning, grind and water
temperature so that your cup will be the best you can brew. You’ll sip freshly brewed
coffee with us in class as we brew up some good fun! $10
Coffee Tasting: Knit and Sip!

The Sow’s Ear is not just about the yummy yarn! Explore the world of Arabica coffee in
a cupping with barista Ben, who promises to teach you about coffee regions, help you
describe what you taste, and make you laugh. Have your Saturday morning coffee with
us—enjoy a variety of caffeinated brews, have a snack, and work on your knitting if you

Iced Coffee Brewing

Iced coffee is a wonderful and refreshing beverage, and it's incredibly simple. We'll
explore what to look for when selecting a coffee, we'll compare cold brew vs. the
Japanese method, and we'll drink plenty of samples along the way. $10
Weaving
Weaving on a Cricket Loom with Liz Avery

Expand your fiber arts skills this fall by learning to weave on a small, beginner table
loom from Ashford. Create a scarf, runner, or placemats as you learn the parts of the
loom, how to set up the loom, and how to weave a simple, tabby fabric. Finally, learn to
finish your fabric when it is off the loom and how to use an equation to determine yarn
needed for a project. We will have looms to borrow for the class or you can preorder one
of these economical, workhorse Cricket looms for yourself. $35

Basic Felted Bag with Liz Avery

Using a popular Ann Norling tote pattern, we'll construct a handy felted bag that makes a
great knitting bag, purse or farmer's market carry-along. Learn to make clever, double icord handles, a gusset to form a wide base, and the ins and outs of the felting process.
You can even use a little bling to make your bag stand out. Even if you have felted
before, you'll learn great tips for future felting success. Pattern included. Prerequisites:

Captivating Cowls
Möbius Cowl with Sylvie Schuresko

A Möbius loop is a geometric shape consisting of a single surface and a single bound off
edge. Learn the slightly mind-bending Möbius cast on and make a simple and elegant

Cabled Neckwarmer with Sylvie Schuresko

Learn how to knit cables while making a stylish neckwarmer! Cables add texture, depth,
and interest to knitted fabric - and they're simpler than they look. This class will
introduce you to the basics of knitting cables. You will learn how to make left and right
leaning cables, how to read a chart, and a few hints and tricks to take your knitting in new
directions, and get a great winter accessory in the process! Prerequisites: must be familiar

Learn to create giant cables using bulky yarn and watch your cowl grow quickly! Explore

Spinning
Beginning Drop Spindle Spinning with Liz Avery
Thursday, July 10 6:00-8:00 pm
Liz will teach you how to make your own yarn! If you are curious about spinning, drop
spindling is a fun, portable, and inexpensive way to start out. Dust off your spindle or use
one of ours. Practice roving is included in the course fee. Spindles and extra roving will
be available for purchase. $30
Intro to Wheel Spinning with Liz Avery
Call to set up private lesson with Liz this winter. Begin your spinning career or come for
a refresher! Liz will take you through the basics of spinning wool into yarn on a spinning
wheel. Class includes use of our spinning wheel unless you would prefer to practice on
your own wheel. Roving is available for purchase. $30/hour.

Problem Solving and Fixing Mistakes with Liz Avery

Are you uncertain about the proper way to pick up a dropped stitch? Still not sure about
the proper stitch mount? Do you need to learn how to “un-knit”? Discover holes and
don’t know how they got there? This is the class for you! We will spend two hours
concentrating on the most common mistakes that happen in knitting and the most
efficient ways to fix them. Students call this the “fearless knitting” class! Prerequisites:

Fixing Mistakes 2 with Liz Avery

Delve deeper into more common mistakes that happen in knitting and the most efficient
ways to fix them. Learn how to fix mistake cables, add yarnovers and adjust mistakes in

Buttons and Buttonholes with Sylvie Schuresko

Learn to make a variety of buttonholes and when to use each one, as well as how to

Zippers are a great way to finish a cardigan, and they're not as hard as they look. Learn a
sewn-in and a knitted-in technique, plus what to do when your garment isn't a standard

Continental Style for English Knitters with Sylvie Schuresko

Continental style knitting is smooth, efficient, and makes colorwork easier to handle. If
you knit English style (aka American style aka "throwing"), take this crash course in

Gauge and Blocking with Liz Avery
Monday, August 25 6:00-8:00 pm
Learn to create an accurate gauge swatch for working flat and a quick, flat swatch for
knitting in the round. Yarn substitution, reading your swatch and gauge secrets will be
discussed. Practice several different blocking techniques for a variety of fibers, garments
and stitch patterns. Learn to use pins, boards, irons and wires for the finished fabric your
knitting deserves. Prerequisites: must be familiar with knitting basics. ♥ $25
Crash Course in Knitting in the Round with Sylvie Schuresko

Are you new to circular knitting or need a refresher? Don’t just limit yourself to flat
objects—expand your knitting experience exponentially by learning to knit tubes:
mittens, hats, in-the-round sweaters, gloves, and socks will all be within your grasp with
just a few circular principles under your belt. Prerequisites: must be familiar with knitting

Bind Offs and Cast Ons with Sylvie Schuresko

Are your cuffs too tight or your necklines too floppy? Most of us learn just one cast on
and bind off when we're new knitters, but there are hundreds more out there, each serving
different purposes - stretchy, firm, decorative, etc. Learn a variety of useful cast ons and
binds offs, as well as which ones to use when. ♥ $25
Sweater Consultation with Sylvie Schuresko
Need help with measurements or modifications, swatching or seaming? Whether you're
starting, finishing, or somewhere in the middle, Sylvie can help you with your sweater
project in a private lesson. $30/hour

Knitter’s Workshop/Independent Study with Amy Detjen
Wednesdays from 6:00-8:00 pm: Workshop will be on hiatus in July. Check in store or
call for dates in August and September.
Afraid to tackle that Dale of Norway, Fair Isle, Kaffe Fassett, Heirloom Lace, steeked,
etc. project? Do you need a guiding hand to realize your knitting potential? Whatever it
is, this workshop is for you. Amy will help you to meet your individual knitting goals.
Knitters can pick any project to work on (and get help with) throughout the semester.
Learn new knitting techniques and share ideas and experiences with other members of the
group. Come for the knitting help and stay for the camaraderie! All levels of knitters are
warmly welcomed.
This workshop is priced by the class for flexibility. Purchase a single lesson or prepay for
a set number of classes. Stuck on a project? Need help getting through a difficult section
of knitting or sewing your sweater together? Amy is here for you! $15 per class or 6 for
$75
Amy Detjen teaches knitting at guilds and events across the nation, assists at Meg Swansen’s Knitting
Camp (for 15+ years!), and has been called an “outstanding knitting visionary.” She is a talented knitting
architect, designer and technical editor. She is passionate about teaching knitting and helping people
learn about their knitting options. Take a class and be amazed by how much you learn and how hard you
laugh.
The Sow’s Ear Class Policy
Payment is due at the time of sign up. Many of our classes fill up
quickly. To guarantee a space please register as soon as possible. We
accept payment in the store, over the phone or by check via mail. We
consider your registration a commitment to take the class. We order
supplies and make a commitment to the teacher based upon your
registration.
Please be sure you can attend the first session before you sign up for
a class. The first class session provides the foundation of skills for
the entire class. Classes start promptly, so be sure to have all
materials ready to go.
If you cancel a week or more before the beginning date of the class,
your class fee will be refunded. If you cancel between forty-eight
hours and a week's notice, your class fee will be transferable to
another class within the following calendar year. If you do not
immediately transfer to an upcoming class, a store credit gift
certificate can be issued to be used for another class within the
calendar year. The cost of the class is neither refundable nor
transferable forty-eight hours before the class begins. A full refund
will be made if we cancel a class.
