Bienvenue au Phare Welcome to Amédée
Mary-D Enterprises débuta son activité touristique en
1981 à Nouméa, en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Depuis plus
de 20 ans, Mary-D Enterprises organise des excursions
sur l’îlot Amédée située à 24 kilomètres au sud de
Nouméa dans le plus grand lagon du monde classifié
Patrimoine de l’Humanité par Unesco en 2008. Cette
prestation a lieu quatre à cinq fois par semaine et
transporte environ 25 000 visiteurs par an.
Le Mary-D a 28 employés qui s’occupent de tous
les aspects de l’opération. L’entreprise a son propre
service de restauration qui prépare le buffet pour
les excursions au phare Amédée ainsi que sa propre
équipe de maintenance pour s’occuper des ses deux
navires. Un bon nombre des employés font partie de
l’entreprise depuis plus de 10 ans, et certains sont là
depuis la création de cette entreprise à l’ambiance
très familiale.
La prestation a évolué au cours des années pour
inclure aujourd’hui une croisière vers la barrière
de corail, des balades en bateau à fond de verre,
un cocktail, un buffet, un spectacle de danses
folkloriques et bien d’autres activités. Sur l’île vous
trouverez un restaurant tout équipé, un bar, une
boutique de souvenirs, un parc de jeux pour enfants,
des toilettes et des douches pour se rincer.

Mary-D Enterprises has been family owned and operated
since 1981. Over the past 20 years, the Mary-D has concentrated on running day tours to the Amedee Lighthouse Island, 24 kilometers west of Noumea in the largest lagoon
in the world, classified as a World’s Heritage site by Unesco
in 2008. This service typically runs four or five days a week
and transports close to 25,000 visitors annually.
Mary-D Enterprises has 28 employees who cover all facets of
the operation. We have a self-catering kitchen that prepares
food for day trips to Amedee Island as well as an in-house
maintenance program where all repairs and services are
done for the two vessels in our fleet. A large number of the
employees have been with the company over 10 years with
a few who have been working since its beginnings. This has
created a very family-like organisation.
The product has developed over the years to include a
barrier reef cruise, glass bottom boat tour to discover the
coral and fish around the island, welcome drink, hot and
cold lunch buffet including many local and seafood dishes,
a folkloric dance show during lunch, coconut tree climbing
demonstrations and a sarong tying demonstration.
In the 20 years that the Mary-D has been transporting visitors
to Le Phare Amédée they have dramatically improved the
conditions to facilitate bringing visitors to the island every
day. On the island you will find a fully equipped restaurant
including a full bar and boutique for souvenirs. There is also
running water for toilets and fresh showers for rinsing.

La barrière de corail qui entoure la Nouvelle-Calédonie s’étend sur 1 600 km. Sur la côte Ouest, du
nord au sud, elle mesure approximativement 700 km, et 200 m à 1 km de large. A l’intérieur du récif,
la profondeur du lagon est de 25 m en moyenne alors qu’à l’extérieur elle est de 1 000 m.
Trois passes naturelles s’ouvrent sur l’océan dont celle de Boulari, signalée par le phare Amédée.
The barrier reef surrounds New Caledonia extends over 1.600 km. On the West coast it measures
approximately 700 km long from north to south, it ranges from 200 m to 1 km in width.
Inside the reef, the lagoon averages 25 m in depth, whereas outside the reef it is 1,000 m deep.
There are three natural passages that open out to the ocean such as the Boulari passage, of Amedee
lighthouse.

kilomètres et varie en largeur de 200 m
à 1 km. A l’intérieur du lagon la profondeur moyenne est de 25 mètres alors
que de l’autre côté de la barrière elle
chute rapidement à plus de 1 000 m. Il
y a trois passes naturelles, la principale
est la passe de Boulari à côte du Phare
Amédée qui est un outil essentiel pour
les navigateurs.

The history
of the ligthouse
Le constructeur de la Butte Chaumont, M.
Rigolet, achève en 1862 ce véritable monument que représente le 1er phare métallique de France et selon une des clauses du
marché, il doit le monter auprès de ses ateliers. Pendant 2 ans, le phare dominera Paris de ses 56 m. Enfin, il est démonté, 1 265
colis sont préparés pour un poids total de
387 953 kilos, qui seront transportés sur la
Seine jusqu’au Havre d’où il sera expédié à
Nouméa. Et après dix mois de labeur effectué sans incident par des militaires et des
travailleurs indigènes, il est allumé le 15 novembre 1865, jour de la fête de l’impératrice
Eugénie épouse de Napoléon III et signale
de son éclat blanc l’approche des passes
d’accès à Nouméa.
D’une hauteur de 56 m (près de 20 étages
d’un immeuble moderne) le phare a été
construit sur un îlot situé à une vingtaine de
kilomètres au sud de Nouméa, mesurant 400
m de long sur 270 m de large. Pour admirer
le magnifique panorama, les plus hardis graviront les 247 marches du superbe escalier
de fonte qui conduit au sommet de la tour.
De l’autre côté de la terre, aux antipodes, plus
exactement à Roches-les-Douvres, le frère
jumeau du phare Amédée veille aussi sur la
sécurité des marins de la Manche ; construit
2 ans après le phare Amédée, il fut un des
clous de l’exposition universelle de Paris en
1867 sur le champ de mars. Amédée n’eut
pas cet honneur, mais il est lui aussi une attraction unique dans le lagon calédonien.

achieved this veritable monument in 1862
which represents the first métallic lighthouse
in France. According to one of the clauses of
the contract, it had to be assembled in his
workshop. For two years the lighthouse dominated Paris standing 56 meters tall. After
which it was disassembled into 1,265 pieces
for a total weight of 387,953 kilos. First transported on the Seine to the port of the Havre
for the voyage to its final destination, New-Caledonia. And after ten months of incident free
labor by military personnel and indigenous
workers, it was erected on Amedee Island. It
was first lit on the 15th of November 1865, the
saint day of the Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III. Its light signals the entrance to the
passage of Boulari, one of three natural passages in the reef. With a height of 56 meters,
Amedee light house dominates the Island,
measuring 400 meters long and 270 m wide,
situated 24 kms from Noumea. To admire the
magnificent panorama the most courageous
brave the 247 steps of the superb cast iron
staircase which leads to the top.
On the other side of the word, more exactly
at Roches-Sur-Douvres, the twin brother of
the Amedee light house guards over navigators of the Manche. Constructed two years
after the Amedee light house, it was the star
attraction of the universel exposition of Paris
in 1867 on the Champ de Mars. Amedee light
house, a unique attraction in the world’s largest lagoon.

dark lips and moves during the night.

Sea kraits are amphibious snakes that go at sea to hunt moray and conger eels. They come on land to digest,
slough their skin or reproduce.

Actuellement le Mary-D opère avec deux navires, le Mary-D Dolphin et le Mary-D Princess.
Le Mary-D Dolphin est un monocoque de 32 mètres d’une capacité de 184 personnes. Il a
été construit en 1998 à Freemantle en Australie, il est équipé de 3 moteurs « jets » Hamilton.
il peut transporter les passagers dans son salon climatisé ou sur son deck exterieur, il est
également équipé de trois salles d’eau et d’un espace VIP avec six téléviseurs. Le Mary-D
Dolphin a été reconditionné en 2007 afin de « rafraîchir » son look et ses equipements. Le
Mary-D Princess est un monocoque de 30 mètres équipé de deux bars, d’un deck extérieur,
de deux salles d’eau, possède quatre téléviseurs et l’air conditionné dans sa cabine
principale. Le Mary-D Princess a été totalement refait (moteurs et habitacle) en 2006 lui
donnant un aspect neuf et moderne.
The Mary-D currently has two vessels operating, the Mary-D Dolphin and the Mary-D Princess.
The Mary-D Dolphin is a modern 32-meter mono-hull that can carry up to 184 passengers. It
was built in 1998 in Freemantle, Australia. It has three Hamilton jets that propels it through the
water. The Mary-D Dolphin transports visitors in style as it also features two bars, , a sundeck
and the lower main deck, one VIP lounge, six televisions, air conditioning and three toilets. The
Mary-D Princess is a 28-meter mono-hull which was built in 1990 in Freemantle, Australia. The
Mary-D Princess also has four televisions, two bars, a sundeck and air-conditioned main deck
and two toilets. She underwent a total refit in 2006 giving her a fresh and new look.
