Studio 180 Handbook for Competition Team © I. II. Studio 180 Philosophy a. As dancers, we look forward to sharing our love of dance and know that dancers who develop a high level of competency in each selected discipline will enjoy the benefits of healthy bodies, grace, confidence and the natural byproducts of joy, artistry, technique, conditioning, and performance skill. b. At Studio 180, we strive to redefine dance, our business philosophy is based on two simple facts: i. Traditional dance instruction combines well with conditioning and aerial training ii. Dancers trained in a fuller range of disciplines not only improve their craft but also enhance their strength and become better suited and more marketable for a dance career. Fees a. There is a registration fee of $35 per student due upon registration. b. Competition Costumes i. Costumes will be chosen by the teacher and fitted by the end of November. They will be ordered by October 1, 2011 and full payment per costume is due or the costume will not be ordered. ii. When the costume is received by the student, please make sure it is not worn until the recital. iii. Competition team members will also be required to purchase a warmup suit. c. All team members will be required to register for and attend the classes designated for the areas in which they compete, as noted below. In addition, all competition team members are required to take one offsite, approved workshop per season and one master class per season, hosted by the studio, in each of their competing disciplines. If for an acceptable reason the dancer is unable to attend the designated conventions (serious illness or injury), the Studio 180 Faculty will recommend another convention for the dancer to attend once healed. It is mandatory for each competition dancer to have the convention experience of master classes; workshops cost TBA. They can be more or less, depending on the workshop. In addition, each competition team member is required to take one Studio180 hosted master class in each of her competing disciplines. 2 IV. Conduct Studio 180 is a dance studio committed to excellence. We celebrate the joy of dance, have great fun, and hold our students to the highest standards of conduct. Dancers will treat dancers and faculty with respect at all times. Dancers will use language appropriate and exhibit behavior appropriate to ladies and gentlemen at all times in the studio and in any activity associated with the studio. VI. Studio 180’s Competition Team: Studio 180 offers a competition team for dancers who are looking for a higher level of commitment to dance and a way to compete against others in the area and the surrounding areas. a. Participation in the competition team is voluntary and team members are selected by audition only. If a dancer is selected and chooses to join the team, they have to decide, along with their guardians, to be 100% committed to the rules of the competition team. b. In addition, for all disciplines except TAP, ballet technique is mandatory as well as a mandatory competition rehearsal. If you miss more than five classes of any required competition class, you are no longer able to compete. c. Competitions are during weekends starting March through May. Rehearsals will increase during this “competition season.” We will create a schedule that will go out over winter break so you can put it in your calendar. Absence is not acceptable. After competition season is over, all classes and rehearsals continue and are required through the recital as the dancers rehearse their CT recital dances in addition to their dances in non CT classes. d. You are required to purchase a Studio 180 competition warm-up suit and may, if you wish, also purchase a team bag. Team costumes are required. We do not recommend purchasing shoes until the costumes are ordered because the shoes will depend on the color of the tights and the costumes. In addition, competition make-up is required. e. Each dancer will be required to attend one off-site and master classes in the disciplines they are competing. The off-site workshop will be at one of the competitions we are attending. We will provide master classes at the studio, and while the dancer is only required to attend the class in the discipline they are competing, dancers are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to register for any other master class Studio 180 provides. f. We will compete in 3 competitions this season. There are no refunds for competition fees. g. Transportation to all competition events is independently provided by the guardians/parents. h. Although the commitment to the team is a big one, it is a wonderful way to build self-esteem, a sense of stability and discipline, and improve dance skills. In addition, the team will have the opportunity to win awards and placement on the regional and national level. We look forward to a successful competition season! 3 VII. VIII. IX. Annapolis Dancewear a. Annapolis Dancewear is located at 131 Gibralter Street and offers a full line of dancewear for all disciplines. Lost and Found a. We will have a lost and found bin in the dancer’s workspace. If you find anything, please put it in that bin. If you lose anything, please check this bin first. You can also inquire at the front desk. Safety a. Dancers are NOT ALLOWED TO WAIT OUTSIDE FOR THEIR RIDES. If you are picking your child up from dance class, please pull in front of the studio so your child can see you, and the person working at the front desk can watch your child safely get to your car. We will not allow any child to wait outside for their ride, NO EXCEPTIONS. Dancers who drive must go to their cars at the end of the evening in pairs or with an escort.
