EHS Newsletter June 2016 It’s the perfect time of year to plant a plant. While you watch your child grow they can watch plants grow. Planting with your child teaches them so many things about the earth, food, patience, care, and routines. When you care for a plant with your child, whether it be a small house plant, or a spring plant you grow to eat, even very young children learn about caring for something. Children are taught to be gentle. You can teach them to touch the plant with just one finger, to keep it safe away from toys and pets and friends, and to be “nice” to the plant. Children learn about routines when they help you to water the plant. You can set a routine such as after breakfast every day we check the plants. If you plant something that produces food children begin to learn about the earth, knowing that plants need good soil, water, and sun. So this spring, consider planting a plant. If you only have room for a small pot in the house, you can plant chives or mint. It’s fun to pick a mint leaf and let your child rub it in their hands and smell their hands. And did you know mint is energizing. If you are feeling a little tired, smelling mint, or putting a mint leaf in your water can help perk you up. If you have a cup of chives in the house you can have your child cut up small pieces to sprinkle on their spaghetti, soup, or mac and cheese. If you have room for a bigger pot outside you can plant a tomato plant, or some beans. A cherry or grape tomato plant will produce enough tomatoes for your child to pick some and eat some every day. If you plant some green beans you can pick just a couple of beans and steam them in the microwave for 2-3 minutes and they are ready to eat. If you have a small patch of ground to plant in outside you can plant a salsa garden with tomatoes, peppers and onions. You can pick them and chop them up and you make your own salsa. If you want outside space for a small garden and you can’t do it at home there are some community options. There is a community garden at the Vineyard church where you can use a patch of ground there to plant a garden. There is a fence there to keep the deer out and water to use. You can call the Vineyard at (719) 269-3695. Check in with our home visitor about the new garden at SPIN/Family Center. There is a great new space out there with dirt in it now and the plants are being planted. We enjoy watching your children grow. Happy watering! The Board Report was approved by all. During the meeting Brenda Aguirre went over all the documentation paperwork that is needed for our grant which is due by June 1st. Thanks Brenda you did an awesome job. I would also like to take the time to thank Jamie Eastman, Kanita Pirraglia, Bobbie Medrano and Amanda Folger for the great work they have been doing on the garden. The garden is all planted now and we are waiting for the fruits of our labor. Good job girls. Our next Policy Council Meeting will be held during the week of June 20, 2016. See you there! Diana McPeek Hello all! Can you believe June is here already? Summer time is a great time to get outside with your children and excite their imaginations as you explore together. There may be summer cookouts, picnics, time playing in the water, or just getting outside to play. All of these everyday activities are a great opportunity for learning for your child. Every new experience is building their understanding of the world around them. Remember, your child is like a scientist. With every new experience they are problem solving, experimenting and observing cause and effect. This month our focus for our Family Socializations is Cognitive Development, and we are taking our Socializations back to our local parks while the weather is nice. June 7th we will be meeting at Harrison Park at 490 N Cottonwood in Canon City for a picnic and Musical Water activity. Young infants may enjoy exploring the environment with you. Mobile infants may show curiosity to explore the water or materials with you, and toddlers may measure and compare as they play with the water with spoons, and measuring cups. What fun! June 21st we will be meeting at Pathfinder Park at 20209 Highway 115 between Canon City & Florence for a picnic and the I Am Blowing Bubbles activity. Diana will provide a special Nutrition Activity as well. Young infants may enjoy watching the bubbles flying around. Mobile infants may try to reach for the bubbles and explore their environment with their eyes and hands. While Toddlers may experiment with different ways to blow bubbles and maybe chase and pop them too. I hope to see you all there! Don’t forget… You are your child’s first and most important teacher!
