Bellhousing Kits
Quarter Master offers a wide variety of bellhousing kits. Kits are available with Pro Series, V-Drive,
Optimum-V or with Carbon/Carbon clutches. Numerous splines and disk counts are also available. In
addition to these options, the kits can be configured with an aluminum or magnesium bellhousing with
either the Tri-Lite or the Race hydraulic release bearing. Kits are available for many Chevrolet, Ford and

Our Lightest and Best Metallic Clutch!
Quarter Master’s OPTIMUM-V series provides ultimate performance for circle track applications, and
the 7.25” has won the most prestigious Nextel Cup, Busch Grand National, Craftsman Truck and
Pro-Cup Races since its introduction in 2003. This is the lightest weight and lowest inertia metallic
clutch available. The OPTIMUM-V is an enhanced open style clutch with reduced mass in the legs,
pressure plate, and floater plate, resulting in a lower moment of inertia.

Quarter Master offers a wide variety of bellhousing kits using the 7.25" (185mm) diameter clutches. Kits are available with Pro Series, V-Drive,
Carbon/Carbon or Optimum-V clutches. Numerous splines and configurations are also available. In addition to these options the kits can be
configured with an aluminum or magnesium bellhousing with either the Tri-Lite or the floating hydraulic release bearing. For sanctioning bodies that

Clutch Unit
Quarter Master's Extreme-V series of clutches was created to fill the gap
between a full race clutch and a street clutch. These clutches feature a CNC
machined cover made of billet 6061 T6 aluminum. There are 1 and 2 disk
configurations available to meet a wide range of applications.
Clutches can be ordered in a variety of spline configurations with either solid
or sprung hubs. Friction material choices include:

OE Style Clutch Design
This bearing has been the standard in short track racing for years. It
features a radius face and return spring to prohibit continuous contact of
the bearing and clutch spring fingers. It is very easy to set up and can be
used with stock as well as any Quarter Master and OE style bellhousing.
Quarter Master’s Street Stock Hydraulic bearing is designed to
be used with OE style clutches that require the use of a flat
bearing face. This bearing works with today’s high pressure
clutch systems.

Quarter Master's Tri-Lite bearing weighs in at a mere 1.3 lbs. It is CNC
machined from billet aluminum and black anodized for corrosion
resistance. The Tri-Lite bearing can be ordered with or without a return
spring. There is no shimming required. Simply tell us what clutch
system that is being used and order the proper size piston for that
application. Pistons are available in .100" increments to work for a wide
range of applications.

There are gear reduction starters and then there are Quarter Master
Ultra-Duty Starters. We start with the highest quality motors
available and finish them with adapter mounts that accurately
locate the pinion gear for a perfect mesh fit with the flywheel. That’s
the difference between the best and the rest. Ultra-Duty Starters
feature plenty of punch (1.4 Kw) for all performance applications.
With full ball bearing construction and heavy-duty solenoids, they
are not affected by normal underhood operating temperature.
Current draw is approximately 210 amps at rated load. Our 115
Series Permanent Magnet Starters feature an even more compact
design to reduce weight by a full 4 lbs. over the 114 Series
Ultra-Duty Starters without sacrificing cranking power.

rigid tolerances, careful attention to detail during assembly, and a balance spec to less than .125 inch-ounces separate the best
from the rest.
Our revolutionary aluminum driveshafts are built with a two-part, weld-free assembly process that eliminates the distortion and
loss of heat treat strength that welding causes. Hardcoat anodized forged aluminum end yokes are interference fit to special O.D.
ground 3.0" x .120" aerospace aluminum tube then, reinforced with six Monobolt® aircraft fasteners. We install heavy-duty
racing u-joints and a quality slip yoke, then computer balance the assembly. These shafts weigh 40% less than their steel
counterparts. Maximum center-to-center length is 51-3/16".
We can also fill your requirements for steel driveshafts, from 1310 Series Heavy-Duty shafts for circle track cars to 1350 Series
Ultra-Duty assemblies for drag racing applications. All of our steel racing driveshafts are constructed with seamless chrome moly

PROCEDURES FOR MEASURING SHAFT LENGTH
The most important dimension of your new aluminum driveshaft is the length. This length is expressed as the distance between
the centers of the front and rear u-joints.
To arrive at this dimension, first raise the car off the ground, being very careful to ensure that the normal vehicle weight is being
supported by the rear suspension. (The suspension is not at full droop or unnecessarily compressed.)

Take the slip yoke that the driveshaft will be assembled to and insert it all the way into the tailshaft housing of the transmission.
Now pull it out 3/4" to 1". This will be the free play that all driveshafts need when the suspension moves through its full range
of travel.
Carefully measure the distance between the centers of the front and rear u-joints. Double check the 3/4" to 1" free play in the
slip yoke and measure again as we are not responsible for incorrect measurements.
For circle track cars with a quick change rear end, only A, B, and C need to be known. Complete all lines if your car is equipped
with a Ford 9" rear end.

Cambering a solid rear axle-housing increases the tire contact patch with the track surface,
thereby improving handling and lowering lap times, while making driving easier and less
fatiguing. Here's how it works. The snout is machined with the desired amount of camber
angle in it. Once the hub assembly is mounted on the offset snout and axle tube, the driv e
flange is no longer perpendicular to the axle spline. The camber drive flange with the
floating crown gear compensates for that and eliminates axle binding and breakage while
reducing drag in the driveline.

What is Moment of Inertia (MOI)?
Moment of Inertia, or MOI, is a measurement of how much energy it takes to spin an object. The heavier OR larger the object in diameter, the
harder an object is to accelerate or decelerate. If two objects are the same weight and one is half the diameter of the other, then the smaller
diameter object will accelerate and decelerate faster with less overall energy being used. This translates to a faster acceleration coming out of a
turn, and a faster deceleration going into the next turn. Faster acceleration = Speed advantage over the competition.
How is MOI calculated?
MOI is calculated in lb-in 2
MOI = .5 x mass x radius 2
Example: 7.25” Pro Series 3 disc clutch unit weighs 11.0 lbs and
has a MOI of 97.6 lb-in 2
4.5” Pro Series 3 disc clutch unit weighs 5.7 lbs and has
a MOI of 20.4 lb-in 2

Conclusion: The 4.5” Pro-Series 3 disc clutch has a much lower
MOI and will have a definite advantage over the 7.25”.
Check the Rulebooks!
Before you purchase any clutch system, always refer to your rulebook. Most sanctioning bodies indicate the minimum clutch diameter permitted
for the friction/driven discs. Furthermore, some sanctioning bodies specify the number of discs allowed and the type of friction material including
metallic and carbon/carbon. Verify the clutch diameter, number of discs, flywheel or flexplate alloy and the minimum diameter of the
friction/driven discs before purchasing a clutch system.
Maximum Performance or The Right Performance Combined with
Reliability, Durability, and Value?
Now that you understand the importance of MOI, you might be inclined to choose the smallest diameter clutch available, but choosing the
smallest assembly is not always best…
Smaller clutch = less radial friction surface = More Heat and Higher Rate of Wear
If you drive a light clutch around the paddock area, you will be operating the engine at a low rpm, and the engine will stall easily resulting in a
higher rate of wear of the clutch components. If you don’t have a crew to help push or a winch to get the car on the trailer, consider the best clutch
setup for performance, reliability, durability and value.

Quarter Master uses the latest engineering technology to design and manufacture the most
advanced driveline racing products. By utilizing 3D solid modeling, Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
design tools, and CAM systems, we are raising performance standards for lightweight, high
performance driveline components while maintaining our reputation for building the most reliable
clutches and drivelines.
Our solid modeling gives us the ability to optimize part weight and moment of inertia (MOI) from the
very start. These models are developed into virtual assemblies to ensure the best possible fit with
other components, as well as evaluating ease of installation. Tooling is now made directly from such
models, ensuring the most accurate parts for your racing application.
Through the use of FEA, we are able to analyze all aspects of our design from heat transfer to
harmonics and stress/strain relationships. The subtle tweaks to the design make the difference
between a fatigue life measured in seasons or in laps. Constant development of our loading models
ensures that the only ‘constant’ is improvement.

Rapid prototyping was a buzzword several years ago. We still rapid prototype, we’ve made the
transition to rapid production. With ever shrinking budgets and timelines, Quarter Master works to
prototype the part in its finished form. The end result could be a rapid cast aluminum bellhousing or
a straight-from-billet flywheel.
At Quarter Master, we rigorously test to determine limits and sort out improvements. This starts with
the first FEA Analysis, and we take every opportunity to gather data, from the bench, to the dyno, to
the track, we test at every possible stage.
