The Kobe-based Refugee Assistance Headquarters (RHQ) provides a
confidential counseling service for refugees, convention refugees, their family
members, and asylum seekers in English and Japanese on every Thursday of
the month (10:00 - 16:00) at the NIC 3F Info Counter. Reservations are

non-fiction, fiction, children’s books, and Japanese study guides. Borrow up to 6

NIC Japanese Class for Adults NIC日本語の会
For non-native speakers of Japanese, up to 15-20 places available
per course. All lessons are held in Japanese, and knowledge of
hiragana and katakana are assumed. In the event of excess
applications, places will be allocated by lottery. A range of courses
are available from conversation to kanji. See the website for more

When: 11 lessons every Sunday from 20 Sep. to 29 Nov.

Cost: 2,500 Yen for 11 lessons, plus 500-1,000 Yen for course

NIC Japanese Class for Children
NIC子ども日本語教室
For non-native speakers of Japanese who were born between April
2, 2000, and April 1, 2009. Maximum of 50 places. In the event of
excess applications, places will be decided on a needs basis.
Students will learn Japanese skills necessary for school and daily life.
When: 11 lessons every Sunday from 20 Sep. to 29 Nov. (10:00 11:30)
Where: Nagoya International Center,3F Lecture Room 1 and 2
Cost: 1,000 Yen for 11 lessons.
How to Apply: Come to NIC 4F Lecture Room 3 on Sun. 13 Sep.,
between 9:45 and 10:15. Following completion of the application
procedure, applicants will be interviewed. Applicants must attend
with their parent, guardian, or person responsible for their welfare
(ie. teacher, etc.). Application forms and information can be found

NIC’s Classroom for Global Citizens
Program Needs YOU!
「NIC地球市民教室」
外国人講師募集
Want to help us to create a globally aware Nagoya? As part of its
international understanding education program, NIC’s Classroom for
Global Citizens program is looking for foreign instructors to visit
schools and local organizations and introduce their home countries.
Successful applicants should be able to communicate in Japanese, and
be available to attend an interview and training session on Sat. 12 Sep.
(10:00 – 12:00).
Compensation: 6,000 to 8,000 Yen per assignment depending on
the venue location (income tax and commuting costs are included).
The application form can be downloaded from the NIC website, or
you can pick one up at the NIC, or request to receive one by post
(include a self-addressed envelope, affix an 82 Yen stamp).

NIC Photo Contest NICフォトコンテスト
The NIC Photo Contest is back! Why not share a photo of your
“Nagoya Memories” (they can be recent, or not so recent) with the
Nagoya International Center for the chance to win prizes! You don’t
need to be a professional photographer; you don’t even have to own
a camera – a photo taken with your smartphone is fine!
Photos will be displayed at the NIC 3F Information Counter, and on
NIC’s Facebook page, where visitors’ votes and “likes” will determine
the winner!
Theme: “Nagoya Memories”
How to Enter: Submit your photo (as a JPEG file) by e-mail to us at
[email protected] (with “Nagoya Memories” as the subject)
along with the photo's title, and details of where and when it was
taken, as well as your name, gender, age, nationality / country of birth,
and current address. The photo should be no bigger than 2MB. One
entry per person. Entry is limited to individuals currently residing in
Japan. The closing date for entries is Wed. 30 Sep.

Closing for Maintenance プラネタリウム休演のお知らせ
The Nagoya City Science Museum Planetarium will be closed for an
overhaul and replacement of parts for digital equipment from 25 Sep. to
23 Oct. (The whole Museum will also be closed 24 Sep.)
During this time, the following special events will be held in the 'Our
Universe' exhibition room on the 5th Floor of the Astronomy Building.
･"The Making of Brother Earth"「ブラザーアースができるまで」

documentary on the creation of the new orb-like Astronomy Building will
be shown on the astronomy exhibition room's large screen. (Every day
during opening hours)
･A demonstration of how a planetarium works using the Zeiss IV
planetarium projector (formerly used in the previous planetarium for 48
years, currently on display in the astronomy exhibition room), projecting
the constellation Orion on the exhibition room screen. (Afternoons on

An exhibition (also featuring demonstrations and sales) of a variety of works
by artisans of Owari Nagoya, from historical, traditional craftsmanship to
that which aids us in our daily lives. See demonstrations of a range of
craftsmanship on the stage, and try your hand at creating something under
the direct tutelage of a master craftsman (fee applies for some activities).

Pre-Raphaelite and Romantic Painting from
National Museums Liverpool
特別展
「リバプール国立美術館所蔵英国の夢ラファエル前派展」
The Pre-Raphaelites, taking the art of the period prior to the Renaissance
master Raphael as their ideal, sought to depict nature faithfully in mid-19th
century England. They conceived a rich narrativity unlike the academic
painting that had dominated the British art world until that time, and
created a new world of painting that aroused creativity. This exhibition of
works from the National Museums Liverpool presents around 70 pieces,
including representative works of Pre-Raphaelite artists, and those in a
similar vein.

Nakagawa Canal ARToC10 for Fiscal 2015
平成27年度中川運河助成ARToC10
Nakagawa Canal in Nakagawa Ward is the site of a number of cultural and
art projects utilizing the waterside and warehouses along the Canal. Nagoya
Urban Institute (名古屋都市センター) operates a modern art grant program,
ARToC10, to ensure the continuation of these kinds of activities.
One currently subsidized program is N-mark - "Art Inhabiting the Waterside
- limicoline Art project." A vacant building overlooking the Nakagawa
Canal has been recreated to serve as a base for activities including fieldwork
(observing buildings from various perspectives, recording the condition and
experience using photos and verse), artist talks (listening to the artist's
feelings towards and explanation of the artwork, and engaging in
discussion with participants) and an open studio (opening the venue every
Saturday, with artwork exhibits and art discussion).

Moon Viewing at Tokugawaen - Scoop up the
Moon 月を掬う徳川園観月会
Tokugawaen will host events around the traditional harvest moon viewing
dates in September and October. A wooden boat adorned with traditional
moon viewing offerings and decorations will be illuminated from 17:00, with
other attractions varying depending on the date.
①Jūgoya (十五夜：the 15th night of the 8th month in the old calendar - the
mid-autumn full moon) on Sat. 26 and Sun. 27 Sep. Events include O-Tsukimi
Dorobō (お月見どろぼう), in which children are given permission to 'steal' sweets
offered to the harvest moon (27 Sep. from 14:00).
②Jūsan´ya (十三夜: the 13th night of the 9th month in the old calendar - the
waxing gibbous moon, also known as Mame-meigetsu / 豆名月, or "bean
harvest moon") on Sat. 24 and Sun. 25 Oct. Events include sales of bean
sweets (10:00 - 17:00) and bean gift giveaway (17:00, limited to 100 people)
on 25 Oct.
When: Tokugawaen hours during ① and ② 9:30 - 20:30 (Last entry 20:00);
Regular hours 9:30 – 17:30 (Last entry 17:00); Closed Mondays (in the event
it falls on a national holiday, closed the next business day instead).

Shirotori Garden 'Moon Viewing Tea Ceremony'
白鳥庭園
『観月市民茶会』
Enjoy the seasonal tradition of viewing the autumn moon while partaking in the
tea ceremony. Shirotori Garden will extend its opening hours to 21:30 for special
sessions in the Seiu-tei (清羽亭) tea ceremony rooms for three nights (25 - 27 Sep.)
only. Tickets will be available from 1 Sep. at the Main Entrance, until tickets run
out.
You can also try the tea ceremony during the daylight hours during the Garden's
Autumn Festival (秋露祭), running from Sun. 20 Sep. to Wed. 23 Sep, which will
also feature a range of performances (including taiko, koto and ocarina concerts)
and activities such as t'ai chi ch'uan.

The Ladder-Climbing Shishi of Asakura
朝倉の梯子獅子
A Shishi (a mythical, lion-like creature), performed by two men, climbs a 31-step
ladder to a nine-metre high scaffold and gives a skillful performance. Watch the
creature's acrobatic feats as it climbs, atop the tower, and as it slides down to
earth. Gasp as the bold dance continues while the tower creaks and sways.

Admission: Free. A number of stalls will be selling food and beverages.
The 8th Book Gift Contest in Nagoya / Tokyo /
Kansai 第8回ブック・ギフト
Sponsored by the Jōdō Shū Peace Association, and in the interests of
supporting international students in Japan, this contest aims to
“return the favor” to foreign students who contribute to Japan in
various ways through their exchange of knowledge and culture. The
contest awards the prize to a total of 100 individuals across Nagoya,
Tokyo, and Kansai, awarding successful entrants up to 4 books with a
total combined value of up to 10,000 Yen. To enter, a short essay
must be written by hand in Japanese on a supplied form which can
be downloaded from http://jpa.jodo.or.jp or picked up from the
pamphlet box area at NIC 3F. Essays must be sent in between 1 Sep.
, “Thinking About
and 7 Oct. The subject of the essay is「故郷を考える」
My Hometown”. Winners must be present for the prize presentation
on Sun. 13 Dec. (for Nagoya entrants).
Komakiyama Takigi Noh 小牧山薪能
See outdoor Noh theater (an intangible cultural property), performed in a
bonfire torch lit space. A must-see for people who would like to experience
this traditional Japanese performing art. Noh is a traditional form of masked
drama that has been performed since the 14th century. Musical
accompaniment is provided only by a flutist, several drummers, and a
chorus. The event will reproduce the mysterious beauty of Noh, among the
remnants of Oda Nobunaga’s ancient fortifications. A free English earphone
guidance service will be provided for foreigners (limited to 30 people;
Reservations required - see below).

Setomono Matsuri せともの祭
This popular and long-running festival offers a great chance to purchase
some authentic setomono ceramics at cheap prices, and have a go at
decorating your own setomono. On Sat. 12 Sep. (19:10 – 19:50) there will
be a fireworks display; in the event of rain, fireworks will be postponed to
Sep. 13 (18:30 – 19:00). There is also the Miss Setomono Parade on 12
Sep. (15:00 – 16:00).

Tokugawa Art Museum - The Legacy of
Tokugawa Ieyasu - The Supreme Leader of
the Nation
Tokugawa Ieyasu's bequest to the Owari Tokugawa forms the
backbone of the Museum's collection. Through the Edo period, it was
passed down with care as the family's greatest treasure. Encompassing
swords, military equipment, tea utensils, clothing, and calligraphy, it
towers over other daimyō collections in quality and quantity.
Commemorating the 400th anniversary of Tokugawa Ieyasu's death,
this special exhibition for the 80th anniversary of the Tokugawa Art
Museum and Hōsa Library traces his life through his legacy, as
transmitted in the Owari Tokugawa family.

Since the publication of its inaugural issue on 20 March, 2004 (one year
after the beginning of the Iraq War), the photojournalism monthly DAYS
JAPAN has become a valuable information magazine, communicating
what is happening in the world through photographs. In 2005, the
magazine was acclaimed as the best current photojournalism publication
in the world at the International Festival of Photojournalism in Perpignan,
France. In addition, at the World Press Photo foundation's 50th anniversary exhibition, the magazine was selected as the publication producing the
most outstanding photojournalism of 2004.

That's right, we are about to complete our third decade of exhibitions, held with the kind support of NIC, and
are looking forward to another memorable event (this year, from 3 to 8 November). The Central Japan
International Society (CJIS) has been organizing this exhibition annually since 1986 and, with some of the
original founding artists still participating, have established a strong tradition of displaying a wide range of
works by foreign artists living in the Chubu Region for local citizens to enjoy. This year, having reached FAE 30
we are determined to go all out for an even better show. To this end we extend a warm welcome to any and all
foreign artists in the region to apply for participation (No need to apply if you've already taken part in earlier
FAEs, you'll be contacted automatically). If you paint, draw, print, sculpt, pot, or shoot (photos!), or do any other
fine artwork, including computer graphics, why not take the opportunity to show others what you can do.

Nagoya / Boston Museum of Fine Arts - Venice: Five Centuries of the World's Most
Alluring City from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
ボストン美術館「ヴェネツィア展魅惑の都市の500年」
Venice, city of water built upon the tidelands of the Adriatic Sea. One of the world's foremost tourist destinations, most probably associate it with the gondolas floating on the grand canals and carnivals filled with
glittering masks and costumes. Said to date back to the 5th century, Venice flourished as a great hub of
east-west trade from the middle ages, reaching its peak in the 15th century. This exhibition of highlights of the
beauty of Venice from throughout the last 500 years features around 130 works from the collection of the
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, from artists ranging from Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese, the three great
Venetian masters of the 16th century Renaissance; to 19th century Impressionists such as Boudin and Monet
who were influenced by the Venetian Renaissance masters' rich expression of color. In addition, a number of
extravagant craft pieces, including examples of Venetian lace and Venetian glass, will also be on display.

"Do what others don't." So says ceramic artist Goro Suzuki, creator of unconventional, ingenious works. Emerging
as a young pottery maker at age 16, Suzuki encountered pottery as art when visiting America at age 28. Thus, while
acquiring the craftsman's technique, he came to cultivate the Goro style, creating works with a sense of freedom.
Later, while pursuing the craft of Momoyama pottery, rather than mere imitation, he has continued to develop
highly original techniques. He has also pushed boundaries, creating pieces such as enormous plates and urns.
Through his works one can see the strong determination and solid technique of an artist with a thorough understanding of his material, and Suzuki's sense of fun as he enjoys working with his clay. This exhibition features a
number of Suzuki's diverse ceramic works, including an ambitious new piece.

This exhibition, centered on Greek pottery (including examples of Attic black- and red-figure pottery, white
lekythos funerary pottery, Corinthian pottery as well as items from Greek colonial region in southern Italy) and
Roman pottery collected in Japan in the modern era, outlines the significance of the art of ancient Greek pottery.
Presenting around 200 items, the exhibition also features valuable educational materials showing the reception
of Greek and Roman art in modern Japan and providing a background to their collection here and the Greekand Roman-style ceramic boom in 18th and 19th century Europe, and pieces such as Greek and Roman
art-inspired posters and prints by modern masters including Klimt and Picasso.

Population Census to be taken throughout Japan 国勢調査全国一斉に実施します
On October 1, a Census (国勢調査 / Kokusei-chōsa) will be taken throughout the country. This is a statistical survey of every person residing in
Japan, regardless of nationality or whether you have a resident register (住民票 / Jūminhyō) or not, the results being the fundamental data that will
assist our lives in various fields.
From September 10, IDs to enable you to complete the Internet survey in English and Japanese will be distributed. From September 26, a paper
survey form will be distributed to households for which an Internet survey has not been completed. Survey materials have been prepared in 27
languages, so please ask the visiting Census officer or your local ward office about materials in a language more convenient for you. The
completed Census form should be placed in the envelope provided, and posted by October 7. If preferred, a Census officer can visit to pick up
the completed form.
The contents of the completed Census form will be strictly protected under the Statistics Act, and will not be used for any purpose other than
statistical purposes. The obligation to complete and submit a Census form is also established in the Statistics Act. Your cooperation is greatly
appreciated.

About Municipal Kindergartens 市立幼稚園について
There are presently 23 municipal kindergartens (市立幼稚園 / Shiritsu Yōchien), attended by around 2,150 children, in Nagoya City. Children go to
their kindergarten accompanied by their parent or guardian, with their own lunch.
Hours: As a rule, children attend from 8:45 to 14:00. Childcare is available between 14:00 and 17:00 at each kindergarten.
Enrolment Procedure: In September every year, application guidelines are announced and enrolment forms are distributed. Applications are
accepted in mid-October, and enrolment is determined in late October. This enrolment procedure takes place at each kindergarten. If vacancies
are still available, enrolment applications are accepted at any time.

Do you know about the Me~guru sightseeing bus? Whether you’re a tourist
or a longer-term resident looking to check out some of Nagoya’s sights in a
convenient way (and minimizing the risk of getting lost while navigating
between attractions), the Me~guru is a great, economical way to do it.
When: The Me~guru operates Tuesday to Sunday. (No service on Mondays,
or the following day if Monday is a national holiday.) On weekends and
national holidays, buses depart every 20-30 minutes; on weekdays, buses
depart every 30-60 minutes.
Where: Me~guru buses depart from Nagoya Station, Bus Stop 8 and
stop at the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology,
Noritake Garden, Nagoya Castle, Tokugawaen (The Tokugawa Art Museum,
Hosa Library), Cultural Path Futaba Museum, Nagoya City Archives South,
Nagoya TV Tower, Hirokoji-Sakae, and Hirokoji-Fushimi, before heading back
to Nagoya Castle, Noritake Garden, Toyota Commemorative Museum of
Industry and Technology, then return to the terminus at Nagoya Station.

Cultural Path Area
The Cultural Path area extends continuously from Nagoya Castle to the
Tokugawaen. In this area, historical streetscapes of the Edo, Meiji, Taishō,
and Shōwa periods can still be seen. Visit one of the many stately Taishō-era
residences which are now being used as restaurants and are open to the
public.
Cultural Path Futaba Museum
(Former Residence of Sadayakko Kawakami, City of Nagoya)
The former residence of Sadayakko Kawakami,
Japan’s first actress, and Momosuke Fukuzawa, “the
king of electric power.” This Taishō-era manor built in
a semi-European style was called Futaba Palace, and
the restored grounds are quite resplendent. In
addition to the displays of Sadayakko’s personal
effects and literary materials, the stained glass windows in the mail hall are a
must-see!

Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Money Museum
This museum features the world’s largest gold coin,
the “Tensho Omodaka Oban.” The production of
this gold coin was ordered by Hideyoshi Toyotomi,
and only 3 of the coins currently exist in the world.
The museum collection also features silver coins
stamped with the figure of Cleopatra and 10,000
rare coins and bank notes from around the world.
This extensive collection is regarded as one of Japan’s finest. The museum
also exhibits “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō” and other ukiyo-e
prints of Hiroshige Utagawa.
