生徒との関わり方

Since I’ve come to Komaba High School I have been looking for ways to
connect with students. One project I’ve taken on is the bulletin board outside
the English Teacher’s room. Now every month the bulletin board is decorated
according to a seasonal theme and features English content. In September,
students learned different vocabulary words for describing storms and rain.
In October, Halloween vocabulary accompanied a special event notice. I
encouraged students to read the sign, which invited them to trick or treat!
On the day before Halloween students came to the English teacher ’s room
after school to trick or treat. Every student answered a fun Halloween
question in English and chose a candy. It was a lot of fun!
In November the theme was American Thanksgiving. Students could
read fun facts about Thanksgiving traditions and symbolism. Did you know
that ever year the American president pardons the National Thanksgiving
Turkey? It is an old custom to eat turkey on Thanksgiving and millions of
turkeys are consumed every year. The Turkeys pardoned by the president
escape Thanksgiving dinner and are allowed to live out their lives on a farm.
In recent years the American public has been able to select the winning
turkey by vote. This year the top two Turkeys honored the famous American
president, Abraham Lincoln; their names were Honest and Abe. Abe won the
title this year, but Honest was pardoned too. The news about Abe winning
the title of National Thanksgiving Turkey caused some international
confusion. The Chinese media didn’t understand that Abe is a single syllable
nickname for Abraham. They thought the turkey was named after Japan’s
Prime Minister Abe.
Now in December I’ve made a Christmas tree on the board. Since many
students are fans of Snoopy, I posted some Christmas comics from Peanuts
and other popular comic strips. This time there are also worksheets for
students to take. One worksheet is a Christmas word search puzzle where
students can find the names of Santa’s reindeer, and the other sheet has the
English lyrics to the song “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”. I hope
students will enjoy the fun Christmas activities!

駒場高校着任以来、生徒と関わる方法をいろいろ探してきました。その一環として始
めたのが、英語科職員室前掲示板のディスプレイです。月替りでその時期に合ったテー
マを選び、関連する英語、および文化的背景をつけ加えて飾りつけをしています。９月
には、生徒たちは雨や嵐を意味するさまざまな表現を学びました。
１０月にはハロウィンを取り上げ、ハロウィンにまつわる言葉などの展示にイベント
告知も盛り込みました。ハロウィン前日、放課後に「Trick or treat!」に来て私の出題
するハロウィンクイズに答えるとキャンディがもらえるというものです。わいわい楽し
いひとときとなりました。
11 月のテーマはアメリカの感謝祭でした。生徒たちは感謝祭の伝統と象徴に関する
面白い事実について学びました。米国で毎年、大統領が「the National Thanksgiving
Turkey」に恩赦を告げるということを皆さんはご存知でしたか。米国では、感謝祭の
日に七面鳥を食べるのは古くからの習慣で、毎年何百万羽もの七面鳥が消費されるので
すが、大統領から恩赦を受けた七面鳥は感謝祭の食卓から逃れ、農場にて寿命を全うす
ることが許されるのです。近年、国民が投票でその年の勝者（勝鳥）を選べるようにな
りました。今年、トップ２の七面鳥は、有名なアメリカの大統領アブラハム・リンカー
ンに敬意を表してアーネストとエイブと名付けられ、エイブがタイトルを獲得し、アー
ネストも一緒に恩赦を受けました。この、エイブが「the National Thanksgiving
Turkey」に選ばれたというニュースは国際的にはちょっとした勘違いを引き起こすこ
ととなりました。中国のマスコミが、エイブ(Abe)というのがアブラハムをひとことで
言う時の呼び名だとわからず、日本の安倍首相にちなんで名づけられたと思ってしまっ
たのでした。
12 月に入った現在、クリスマスツリーが掲示板を飾っています。多くの生徒がスヌ
ーピーのファンなので、ピーナッツのクリスマスの漫画と、その他にも人気漫画を何篇
か掲示しました。また、今回は生徒たちが持っていけるようなワークシートも準備しま
した。１枚はサンタのトナカイの名前を見つける文字さがしゲームで、もう１枚は
「Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer（赤鼻のトナカイ）」の歌詞カードです。生徒
たちが楽しんでくれるといいなと思っています。
