夏祭りがエドモントンで初めて開かれました!
On July 9, 2016, EJCA organised this first event. Almost
1,000 people, young and old, Japanese and Canadians,
enjoyed a beautiful summer day. Read stories in page 3 & 7.
２０１６年７月９日、エドモントン日本文化協会が行った夏祭りには子供
からお年寄りまで１，０００人以上が参加して素晴しい日本のお祭りを

The Heritage Festival has grown to
the world’s largest cultural festival
and is a real attraction for Edmontonians and visitors to
the city. There are over 60 cultural groups represented,
and over 300,000 visitors attended in recent years.The
Japanese pavillion welcomes many guests. Please visit
the festival and enjoy!
へりテージ祭りはこの４０年間で大きく
成長し、近年は６０以上のグループが参加して、延べ３０万以上の人
が二日半のフィスティバルを訪れています。この種のフェスティバル
では世界最大規模を誇っています。
日本館にも大勢の人が訪れます。皆様も、この日は是非お祭りに参
加し、どうぞ日本館にもいらしてください。

北風武道クラブが技を競いました。勝負は一点差でした！

EJCA Natsumatsuri Summer Festival
By the time this edition of Moshi Moshi is released,
Natsumatsuri will be in the history books. EJCA’s launch
of Natsumatsuri on Saturday, July 9, 2016 marked the
introduction of our first-ever Japanese festival. This idea
has been around a long time before I became President.
However it has only been in the last 3 or 4 years that the
idea grew momentum amongst the EJCA Board members.
In June 2015, a few Board members met with several
members of the Calgary Omaturi planning group, then in
August we attended the Calgary Omatsuri. The idea was
supported at the Board retreat in November 2015 and
confirmed in January 2016 that discussions with Mrs. Yuri
Goto should commence to blend her own annual backyard festival with a larger EJCA-wide festival. The idea
was to think big….but to start small!
Under the very capable leadership of Co-Chairs Hideji
Ono and Sanae Ohki, Natsumatsuri was an overwhelming
success! The support and participation of many EJCA
clubs and members who prepared and served food,
offered a variety of Japanese beverages, sold Japanese
items in the store, organized the children’s games,
dressed many of our guests in yukata, did face-painting,
facilitated the selfie station, and participated in bon-odori
all contributed to ensure that our guests had an enjoyable
experience. We had about 850 adult visitors and 134
children for our inaugural event! Not surprisingly, we ran
out of food but there was still plenty to drink! Even Mother
Nature gave us a window of favorable weather for our
event.
One of highlights of the Opening Ceremonies was
Kagami-Biraki, the opening of the ceremonial sake cask.
Many thanks to Yasuhiro Washiyama for volunteering and
for the use of his equipment.
That was followed by the second highlight of the evening
when many festival attendees participated in the
traditional bon-odori dancing, led by Mrs. Keiko Frueh of
EJCA’s Wakabakai Dance Group and Mrs. Yuri Goto. As
well, throughout the festival our guests were entertained
and enthralled by performances and demonstrations from
Kita no Taiko Drummers, Gojukai Karate, Iaido and
Naginata and appreciative of the demonstrations and
work on display from the Bonsai and Ikebana clubs.
We are also very grateful for the support from the many
Argyll Community members and their families and friends,
the staff, students and friends of the Edmonton Japanese
Language School (who created the mural of handprints),
the Edmonton Japanese Christian Church members,
many high school and university Japanese exchange
students, and our own EJCA family and friends whose
attendance helped to make our event such a success.
We also thank Yokozuna and Izakaya Ikki restaurants
and the Kita Kaze Budo (Iaido/Kendo/Naginata group) for
supporting and participating in our Natsumatsuri by

会長の挨拶ＥＪＣＡ夏祭り

この「もしもし」を皆様が読んでいる頃には、７月９日のＥＪＣＡ夏祭り
は皆様の思い出の中にしまわれてしまっているでしょう。あの夏祭り
は天候不順が続く中、一週間も前から毎日毎日新聞やネットで天気
予報を眺めては７月９日の天気を一喜一憂した中で開かれました。
朝起きて一番に外を見ると青空に雲が浮かんでいます。これはしめ
たと喜んで朝 9 時からセンターに夏祭りの準備に出かけました。午
後２時３０分ごろには大体の準備は完了しました。空を見上げると雲
が増えて来ています。夕立の可能性もありそうです。どうぞあと６時
間雨が降りませんようにと願いながら３時の開場を待ちました。開場
とともにたくさんの人が続々と来ました。私たちは大人４２０人から４８
０人、子供１１０人という参加者の予定を立てました。しかし、なんと
大人８５０人以上、子供１３４人の参加者があり、夏祭りは楽しく大成
功に終わりました。ここで夏祭りをもう一度振り返り、準備をしてくださ
った方、参加してくださった方にお礼を申し上げたいと思います。
ＥＪＣＡで夏祭りをしようというアイデアは私が会長になる前からあり
ました。最初にアイデアが出てきてからもう４，５年は経つでしょう。
２０１５年６月には役員数名がカルガリーのお祭り役員から詳細を伺
い、８月にはお祭りに参加しました。そしてアイデアが具体的になっ
たのは２０１５年１１月のＥＪＣＡ役員会で夏祭りを企画しようというこ
とが決まってからです。２０１６年２月に新しいきっかけがありました。
エドモントンの後藤ゆりさん一家は毎年裏庭で友達と夏祭りをしてい
るというのです。役員会で後藤さんから詳しい話を聞き、ではＥＪＣＡ
の第一回夏祭りは後藤さんのところの裏庭夏祭りをＥＪＣＡセンター
に移して少し拡大しようということになりました。「大きく考え、小さく始
める」というフィロソフィーです。
役員会では 2 月に大野秀司と大木早苗を共同委員長にして夏祭り
委員会を創設しました。委員会はいろいろなアイデアを煮詰めてプラ
ンを作り、エドモントン地区ジャパニーズ・コミュニティー・スクール、エ
ドモントン・ジャパニーズ・クリスチャン・チャーチ、アルバータ大学大
学院日本人学生協会、アーガイル・コミュニティー・リーグ、ＥＪＣＡの
クラブ、エドモントンの日本料理店に協力をお願いして、プランを具体
的にして行きました。当日の準備も先ずは会場の設定、食べ物・飲
み物の用意、工芸品や日本製のお土産の用意、子供のゲーム、セ
ルフィ写真ブースの用意、若葉会の指導による盆踊り、浴衣の試着、
フェース・ペインティング、カラオケとたくさんのボランティアの活躍が
必要でした。予想以上の数の参加者があって、食べ物は祭りの終わ
りを待たずに売れ切れてしまいました。幸いにもお酒とビールは最後
までありました。終始空を見上げては心配していた天気も、会場の熱
気が雨雲を追いやったように、薄日のさす天気が終わりまで続きまし
た。
夏祭りの始めは威勢のよい北の太鼓の演奏で始り、次に鏡開きが
ありました。ECJA で初めてのイベントで、これはカルガリーで日本酒
の振興をしている鷲山康宏さんがカルガリーから酒樽を持って夏祭
りに参加してくださったので可能になりました。夏祭りには盆踊りが欠
かせません。後藤ゆりさんと EJCA の日本舞踊のグループ、若葉会
のフルー敬子さんが中心になり、３月から練習していました。おかげ
でたくさんの人が参加して踊ることができました。マッキュイン大学の
アニメソンのグループがコスプレで６人盆踊りの参加しました。広場
では北の太鼓の他に剛柔会の空手、居合道と薙刀クラブによる武術
のデモンストレーションがあり、またセンターのラウンジでは盆栽と生
け花のデモンストレーションと展示がありました。夏祭りには地元の
アーガイル・コミュニティー・リーグの会員が家族連れで参加しました。
カラオケは最初歌い手がいるかどうか心配しましたが、若い人達に
人気があり３０分のプログラムでは歌いたくても歌えない人が出てし
まいました。日本料理店の横綱、居酒屋 IKKI も屋台

preparing a variety of Japanese dishes for our
gastronomic enjoyment. Other volunteer chefs included
Mrs. Keiko Yoshida (of Wasabi Restaurant) who prepared
Oden (and donated about $100 of ingredients) and our
two Yakisoba chefs Susumu Kaneda and Toshiyuki
Noborio. We had several other EJCA clubs involved with
the sale of food and/or Japanese craft items, namely Kita
no Taiko, Nobara Chorus Group, and Matsu no Kai.
Karaoke, offered by Mr. Takashi Ohki, was a very popular
activity and a huge success, but left many wanna-be
crooners disappointed because of the long line-ups to
sing. Mia Ohki was a face painting artist. Children with
their face painted were so cute.
We also welcomed several members from the Anime
community who dressed in their favourite costumes, had
a display table and participated in the bon odori.
I also wish to recognize and thank Chiharu Ono and Bob
Dreger who managed the public address and music
system provided free of charge by the company called
FMAV.
Did you know that three Calgary’s Omatsuri committee
members visited our Natsumatsuri? I felt a strong support
from them. Thank you, Calgary!
My greatest praise goes to our 100 volunteers, without
whose support this festival would not have been so
successful, let alone even exist. This includes the
Natsumatsuri planning committee members as well as the
dozens of volunteers who helped on July 9 to ensure that
everyone had a great Japanese cultural experience. I am
especially grateful to those volunteers who arrived very
early in the morning to set up the tents and stayed after
the event to take down the tents and put away tables and
chairs and assisted with the general cleaning up of the
centre and site.

田恵子さんが材料自分持ちでおでんの屋台をだし、金田さんと登尾
さんは焼きそばを３５０人分つくりました。EJCA の松の会は稲荷寿
司と漬け物の弁当やスイカを売りました。野薔薇コーラスクラブは日
本お土産コーナーを出店しました。大野千春さんとボブ・ドレガーさん
が会場の音響設備を FMAV という音響装置設営会社から無料で借
りて設定、管理をしてくれました。ミア・オオキさんは大勢の子供に可
愛らしい Face-paining をしました。これらボランティアは夏祭り委員
も含めて総勢１００人になります。小さな夏祭りですが、この成功はボ
ランティアの活動無くしては成り立ちません。あらためて感謝いたしま
す。そして夏祭りが皆様の楽しい思い出になったことを願っておりま
す。
カルガリーのお祭り委員会から 3 人応援に来てくださったのをご存じで
すか? 来ていただいてとても心強いでした。ありがとうございました。
またカナダ日系人協会の文化事業育成基金から夏祭りに助成金を
支給していただいたことに感謝いたします。

Meeting with Consul-General Tanabe

On Monday, June 27, 2016, EJCA was graced with a visit
from the newly appointed Consul-General of Japan, Mr.
Kunihiko Tanabe. Having only arrived in Calgary in May,
he is being oriented to the Japanese Canadian
communities in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the
Northwest Territories and the needs of the Japanese
Nationals and their families residing in Canada.
Accompanying the Consul-General were Akinori Ando
(Consul) and Paul Pryce (Political and Economic Advisor).
After receiving a message from Consul-General Tanabe,
I explained a brief history of EJCA and the vision and
mission of EJCA. Vice-President Sanae Ohki provided an
overview of Culture Programs including Japan Today (for
grade 8 students) and Explore Japan (for grade 10
students). Vice-President Ohki asked that the ConsulGeneral review the funding allocation to support the
Japan Today program. All EJCA clubs had been invited
to attend and several EJCA Club representatives gave an
overview of their club’s activities. Club representatives
included Carley Okamura (Kita no Taiko), Les Dowdell
(Bonsai), John Priegert, Dana Nawata and Warren
Rafferty (Gojukai Karate), Takashi Ohki (Table Tennis
and Karaoke) and Naoko Kerr (Nobara Chorus Group).
Other EJCA Board members attending included Yoko
Azumaya and James Hoyano.
新任の田辺総領事のＥＪＣＡ訪問
デービッド・ミツイ
在カルガリー日本総領事館に５月に着任された田辺邦彦総領事が
安藤昌訓領事とポール・プライス政治経済アドバイザーと共に６月２
７日にＥＪＣＡセンターを訪れました。これは管轄区域のアルバータ、
サスカチュワン、マニトバ、ノースウェスト・テリトリーの日系関係の団
体やカナダ在住の日本人の実情を知るための活動の一環としての
訪問でした。
総領事から挨拶をいただいた後、私がＥＪＣＡの歴史とその目的を総
領事一行に説明し、副会長の大木早苗がジャパン・トデイ（中学 2
年の生徒のための日本文化紹介プログラム）とエクスプロアー・ジャ
パン（高校 1 年の生徒のための日本文化紹介プログラム）など
EJCA が行っている文化活動を紹介しました。そしてジャパン・トデイ
のための援助の再開をお願いしました。この会にはＥＪＣＡのいろい
ろな会の代表も参加して活動内容を話しました。カーリー・オカムラ、
北の太鼓；レス・ドウデル、盆栽；ダナ・ナワタとワレン・ラフティー、空
手；ナオコ・カー、野薔薇コーラス；大木崇、卓球とからおけ；ジョン・
プリガート（センターマネジャー）。ＥＪＣＡ役員会からヨーコ・アズマヤ
とジム・ホヤノが参加しました。
最後に、ＥＪＣＡから総領事に熊本地震被災者のための義援金が贈
呈されました。総領事は、あらためてＥＪＣＡの皆様の暖かいお心遣
いに感謝いたします、義援金は被災者の方々にとても貴重な支援に
なります、と感謝の言葉を述べられました。
ＥＪＣＡ役員会ではこれからも田辺総領事を始め在カルガリー日本
総領事館の皆様からＥＪＣＡのいろいろな活動へのご支援をお願い
いたしました。
A cheque was presented to Consul-General Tanabe to
support the survivors of the Kumamoto earthquakes, with
money donated from EJCA members. In a follow-up
email, he stated: “Once again, I wish to express my
thanks to you and to the Edmonton Japanese Community
Association for your generosity and compassion. Your
donation will provide valuable assistance in the aftermath
of the Kumamoto earthquakes.”
The EJCA Board of Directors is looking forward to
working with Consul-General Tanabe and appreciates the
support received from his office.

The Calgary Japanese Community Association and the
CJCA Community and Seniors Foundation are hosting
this year’s Annual General Meeting of the National
Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC) and
Japanese Canadian Young Leaders Conference. Please
mark September 9-11, 2016 on your calendar. The
meeting will have a special feature of commemorating the
th
100 anniversary of Japanese Canadian volunteers who
enlisted in WWI. The conference hotel is the Sheraton
Suites Calgary Eau Claire.
９月９日から１１日までカナダ日系人協会（ＮＡＪＣ）年次総会がカル
ガリーのシェラトン・スイート・ホテルで開かれます。今年の年次総会
はカルガリー日系人協会とシニアーズ・ファンデーションが共催しま
す。ＮＡＪＣ年次総会に合わせて日系人青年指導者会議、カナダ日
系人全国会議、第一次世界大戦カナダ軍日系人義勇兵の１００年
記念式典も行われます。ＥＪＣＡの会員はどなたも参加出来ます。年
次総会と会議は全部参加する必要はなく、好きなものだけの参加も
可能です。カナダ全国から参加する日系人と知り合いになり、カナダ
日系人の現在、将来の課題を話し合う良い機会です。どうぞお友達
をお誘いのうえご参加ください。

Museums of Calgary. The NAJC AGM will start at 2pm at
the Sheraton Suites Calgary Eau Claire (conference
hotel) and will conclude at the end of Friday.

Saturday, September 10, 2016 will feature a one-day
National Conference with three streams of sessions:
Heritage, Human Rights and Business Networking. The
day will be capped by a Banquet commemorating the
100th anniversary of Japanese Canadian volunteers
enlisting in World War I. In addition, a community trade
show and vendor marketplace will be running all day.

Sunday, September 11, 2016 will conclude with a halfday session for NAJC delegates. The delegates of the
Japanese Canadian Young Leaders Conference will host
their own sessions during this day and participate in the
conference on Saturday.
Japanese Language Classes – Fall session
The new lesson year will start in September. There are 10
classes per term that are held on Wednesday evenings
from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

 Recognize about 50 basic kanji.
Textbook:“Genki – 1” for intermediate and advanced

Organizing the EJCA Summer Festival

On July 9, we held a very successful EJCA summer
festival, attracting close to one thousand people to our
festival grounds next to the EJCA Centre. In Japan, it is
popular to go out to a summer festival in the evening
when it becomes dark and enjoy dancing bon-odori and
picking up bits from food venders in the cool evening
breeze. Here in Edmonton, we have twilight even at ten
o’clock in the evening. Nevertheless, we prepared bonodori, food venders and small shops at our summer
festival just like those in Japan. I am sure that all the
people who came out to our summer festival could feel
and enjoy the atmosphere of a Japanese summer festival.

エドモントン初の夏祭りは天候にも恵まれ、約千人の方々が集まっ
てくださり大成功に終わりました。
日本の夏祭りは夜店や屋台の灯りで夕涼みと云うところですが、此
処エドモントンでは 10 時過ぎまで明るくて夜店と云うわけにはいき
ません。それでも日本のお祭りの雰囲気を少しでも味わって頂けれ
ばと思い盆踊りを始め、屋台風の食べ物や夜店風のゲームや売店
を開けてみました。今回参加して頂いた方々が日本の祭りの文化を
肌で感じて頂けましたら喜ばしいことです。ともあれ皆様に楽しんで
いただけた様なのでほっとしています。
今回の夏祭りは初めてと云う事でいろいろ反省する事も多いのです
が、10 人の実行委員の方々と 90 人のボランティアの方々に支えら
れて催すことができました。この場を借りて皆様にお礼を申し上げま
す。
I enjoyed working as a co-chair of the EJCA Summer
Festival Committee and thank the other ten members of
the committee and over 90 volunteers who put together
their brain and muscle powers to lead the first EJCA
Summer Festival to such a success.
Helping EJCA Summer Festival

I had a wonderful opportunity to help at the first EJCA
Summer Festival this July. For a long time we have been
enjoying our own summer festival in our backyard which I
organize almost entirely by myself. This time, however, I
was just one member of the EJCA Summer Festival
Committee and worked with other members. It was a
completely new experience for me and I was so
impressed to see how smoothly the committee members
worked together, contributing their own knowledge and
experience.
The committee worked hard and prepared for all kinds of
contingencies. But the night before the Summer Festival, I
could hardly sleep, worrying about all kinds of things that
could go wrong. I felt like a kid on the night before his
school excursion. It was when I saw several tents being
built on the festival site that I realized that there would
really be a summer festival today. Many volunteers came
out to prepare the festival grounds. They worked in such a
coordinated manner that I thought that they must be a
trained team that had been doing this kind work every day.
Now I want to tell you something about our backyard
summer festival. I was born in Nagoya where the summer
festivals are so popular that usually people made three
circles when they dance bon-odori. The summer festival
was also full of food venders that excited both adults and
children. I wondered how I could create such an
opportunity to let our children experience the exiting
atmosphere of a summer festival in Japan here in Canada.
I knew that my Japanese friends were missing a summer
festival too. I talked about the idea of having a small
summer festival in our backyard to my friend. She liked my
idea at once, saying,

初めての試みというＥＪＣＡ夏祭りに裏方としてお手伝いさせていだき
ました。私が家で毎年している裏庭盆踊りは自分ですべて準備して
きましたが、今回のＥＪＣＡ夏祭りははそうはいきません。知らない事
だらけです。しかし集まった盆踊り運営チームはそれぞれが得意分
野で経験と知識を発揮し、次から次へと準備が進んでいきました。そ
れは本当に見事な進み具合でした。
お祭りの前日は不安と興奮で眠れませんでした。遠足前の子供と一
緒ですね。当日着々とテントが建てられているのを見て、「ここでいよ
いよ本当に夏祭りが行われるんだな」と、いろいろな思いで胸がいっ
ぱいになりました。ボランティアの皆さんは、こんなことはいつも集ま
ってしているといった常連チームのように、これまた見事なチームワ
ークで夏祭りを成功に導いてくれました。感謝でいっぱいです。
私の裏庭盆踊りの話を少ししますと、私の出身は名古屋で、地元の
盆踊りには三重の人の輪ができるぐらい皆が盆踊りに参加します。そ
して今思い出すだけでワクワクする出店が一杯！このお祭りの雰囲
気をここで育つ子どもたち、そして盆踊りの楽しさを知らない大人たち
に提供できないものかと、仲の良いお友達に相談したところ、彼女は
すぐＯＫと言ってくれました。「櫓こそ建てられないものの、他のものな
らそれなりの雰囲気は出せるんじゃないか」と。太鼓は無いので、家
にあるカホンという南アメリカの打楽器で代用、やぐらは段ボールに
紅白の布を巻いて代用。代用ばかりでしたが、なんとかそれなりの形
ができました。彼女をはじめ、たくさんのお友達の協力もありそんな裏
庭盆踊りを 5 年続けてきました。子供たちだけでなく大人も含め、そ
んな簡易なお祭りでも毎年大勢の人が楽しみに来てくれていました。
しかし裏庭ではたくさんの人にお祭りを提供できません。勝手な思い
でしたがいつかＥＪＣＡが立ち上がってくれないかな？！と強く願って
いました。その願いがかなって、今年その夢が現実になりました！
お祭り会場で撮った一枚の写真をインスタグラムに載せたところ
「え？日本に帰っているの？」とカナダ人のお友達から聞かれました。
雰囲気作りも大成功だったようです！お友達からも「日本のお祭

“It would not be possible to build a large tower with a taiko
on the top, but we could make something that creates the
atmosphere of a summer festival in your backyard.”
Anyway, we built a small tower covered with a white and
red cloth and placed an African drum on top. We had held
our own summer festival in our backyard for the last five
years that both children and adults enjoyed very much.
But our backyard could not accommodate many people.
One day, I wished, the EJCA would organize a much
larger summer festival. This July, my wish was granted
and EJCA held its first summer festival and I became a
part of it.
I placed one of the pictures I took at the EJCA summer
festival on Instantgram. Then, one of my Canadian friends
asked me if I was back in Japan. Other friends of mine
who came to the summer festival thanked me for
organizing the summer festival, saying that they felt like
they were back in Japan. I think we have succeeded in
creating the atmosphere of a Japanese summer festival
here in Edmonton. I really appreciate the opportunity given
to me to be a part of this year’s summer festival and thank
all those who helped us such as the EJCA Board
members, the Summer Festival Committee members,
volunteers, and people who came to enjoy the summer
festival.

EJCA will be a part of Japan Room at Animethon. Three
“Kimono” workshops will be held on Friday, August 5.
Karate, Kita no Taiko and Kita Kaze Budo will have
demonstrations/workshops on Saturday, August 6.
エドモントン日本文化協会は Animethon の Japan Room で 8
月 5 日（金）に 3 回着物のワークショップを行います。６日には、

Anyone interested in Kyudo (Japanese archery)?

I am looking for anyone who might be interested in starting
a Kyudo club. Kyudo is the Japanese martial art of archery
and it consists of highly specialized techniques used to
shoot an arrow, or ya, with a yumi, a very long bow used
specifically for Kyudo.

rank of nidan in the All Nippon Kyudo Federation. I would
like to start a kyudo club in the International Kyudo
Federation style but I do not have the qualifications to be

In April of this year, we were shocked by news from Japan
that the prefecture of Kumamoto was hit by a series of
powerful earthquakes.The damage was extensive,
affecting the capital city, Kumamoto, and leaving
thousands of people injured and without resources, and
49 people tragically killed. Then, in May a disaster hit
much closer to home when a huge wildfire tore across
northern Alberta and forced the evacuation of all 88,000
residents of the city of Fort McMurray. While we were
relieved that this fire caused no deaths directly, our
neighbors to the north had a large portion of their city
destroyed and their lives uprooted.
４月に起きた熊本地震の甚大な被害に驚くのもつかの間、５月にはフ
ォートマクマレイが山火事に襲われ、全市民が避難するという事態に
なりました。困って居る人に救いの手をさしのべるのがカナダ人の心
意気です。北の太鼓は義援金募集のためにＥＪＣＡセンターでチャリ
ティー・コンサートを開きました。冷たい雨が降る夕べにもかかわらず
１００人以上の人達に来ていただきました。寄付、サイレント・オークシ
ョン、ベーク・セール、バー、バーベキューと大勢のボランティアに支
援していただいたおかげで、楽しい夕べになりました。このチャリティ
ー・コンサートで総額３１５４ドル７２セントの義援金を集めることが出
来ました。これを１５７７ドル３６セントずつ、熊本とフォートマクマレイ
の被災者にカナダ赤十字を通して送りました。皆様のご協力に深く感
謝いたします。
It is in the Canadian spirit to feel compassion and to help
those in need. Kita No Taiko was inspired to hold a
fundraiser to raise donations for these two cities and to
bring awareness to the situations. We were overwhelmed
by the kindness of volunteers and donors as we collected
items to make an excellent silent auction, bake sale, bar
and BBQ. Everyone was treated to a wonderful evening
filled with special multicultural performances by local
performers, all of whom generously donated their time and
talent. Throughout the evening over 100 guests attended
the event and donated towards the fundraiser. Despite the
cold rain that night, we were very touched by this warm
showing of community coming together.
Upcoming Taiko Workshops (there are still a few
spots left):
Through the collaboration of everyone involved and the
generosity of the attendees, we are thrilled to raise
$3154.72 for the Canadian Red Cross! As a result, the
Fort McMurray and Kumamoto relief funds each received
$1577.36.



The Matsu no Kai Club members hope that many of you
have had the opportunity to take part in some of the
many festivals which are offered in the City of Edmonton
each summer. Hopefully you have also been able to
avoid the mosquitoes which have come out in full force
thanks to the many rain storms over the past few weeks.
And did you hear all the loud thunder during those
storms?
皆様夏をどうお過ごしですか？エドモントンの夏はいろいろな行事が
あって、皆様もきっと参加していらっしゃることと思います。夏と言え
ば蚊ですね。上手につきあっていらっしゃることとおもいます。今年
は雷雨が多いようですが、雨漏り、水漏れなどはありませんでした
か？

On June 8 , thirteen MNK members joined other
Edmonton seniors at the Alberta Seniors’ Tea in the
renovated Federal Building. We were seated in a
conference room with floor to ceiling windows which gave
us a wonderful view of the Legislature Building. We were
treated to tea, scones, pastries and fresh fruit while a
th
pianist played in the background. Since 2016 is the 100
anniversary of women in Alberta gaining the right to vote,
Shirley Lowe gave us a brief and amusing history of the
events leading up to that day. We were then bussed to
the Legislature for a very informative tour of the building.
Unfortunately it went over schedule and our group
decided to skip the tour of the Federal Building in order to
make our lunch reservation at Mikado. We had a
delicious lunch with lots of laughter and conversation.
The Club decided to take part in EJCA’s Natsu Matsuri
Summer Festival and held a series of workshops where
those members talented in making crafts and origami met
to create items to sell at our table. The morning of the
Festival, one group made and packaged inarizushi and
tsukemono while others cut and prepared watermelon
slices and fruit cups. With the large crowds attending this
inaugural festival, all our food items were sold out and the
craft sales generated some interest in Japanese crafts.
For the remainder of the summer, the Club members will
be getting out to the park, maybe have a picnic, go to the
Heritage Festival and Fringe! Coming up this week we
will attend our final outing to Northland’s racetracks and
see the ponies run while enjoying a delicious buffet lunch.

さて、７月８日に松の会の会員はアルバータ政府が主催する恒例の
「アルバータシニアーのお茶会」に出席しました。今年やっと改装
が完成した連邦政府ビル（現在はアルバータ政府のオフィスが入っ
ていますが）で開かれました。このビルの州議会議事堂が正面に見
える大会議場でお茶会がありました。お茶会では紅茶、スコーン、お
菓子、新鮮な果物をいただき、ピアノの演奏を楽しみました。今年は
アルバータで女性が選挙権を獲得してから１００年になり、シャーリ
ー・ロウさんがその歴史を面白く解説しました。お茶会の後は議事堂
を見学しました。そのあと連邦政府ビルの見学もありましたが、松の
会はミカドレストランの昼食の予約があり、残念ながら見学は割愛し
ました。
７月９日の EJCA 夏祭りに松の会も参加しました。そのためにワー
クショップを数回持ち、会員が作った工芸品の即売をしました。また、
いなり寿司と漬け物の弁当、スイカやフルーツカップを作って即売し
ました。前日まで不安定だった天気もこの日は安定して一日中、晴
れ時々曇りで、たくさんの来客がありました。おかげで弁当は完売に
なり、工芸品も売れました。まだまだ夏は終わりません。クラブの会
員は７月３０，３１日８月１日のヘリテージ祭りにも出かけるでしょう。
また恒例のノースランド競馬場の競馬とバフェー昼食にも出かける
でしょう。これでは年を取る暇がありませんん。
松の会では新会員を歓迎しています。例会は毎月第四水曜日午前
１１時から EJCA センターで開かれます。先ずはお立ち寄りください。

EJCA Stone Lantern
EJCA 石灯籠
EJCA has a small and beautiful Japanese garden in front of the building.
Early in July 2016, a new stone lantern was placed in its corner. It is a
lovely little one just perfect for the size of the garden.
There are several styles of Stone lanterns. The one installed at EJCA is
“Yukimi (Snow view)” style. This style has 2 – 6 legs and usually smaller
in size. Please enjoy it when you are at EJCA next time.
エドモントン日本文化会館前の日本庭園に石灯籠が加わりました。可愛らしくて瀟洒な
姿は、小さい日本庭園にぴったりです。この形の石灯籠は「雪見灯籠」と呼ばれ、2 本
から 6 本の足がついているのが特徴です。

VISION STATEMENT
The Edmonton Japanese Community Association is a community of
members whose vision is to create a shared experience of culture while
increasing the awareness of Japanese culture.
MISSION STATEMENT:
The Edmonton Japanese Community Association builds a supportive
community to explore Japanese culture by providing place and programs,
as well as creating partnerships for EJCA members and people in the
greater Edmonton area.
