アンティーク家具をチェックすると、色々なものを見つけることがあり、それが楽しくもあります。鍵であったり、コインであったり。
そして、時にその家具の年代を特定できるようなとても重要なインフォメーションを見つけることもあります。
What is good when checking an antique furniture is that you
find a lot of things.
Ok sometimes you find keys or coins. And sometimes you find
very serious information that will be a precious help for you
to identify the piece.
この、マホガニー製のライティングデスクはいい一例です。
2〜3ヶ月前になりますが真ん中の引き出しの内側でこのラベルを見つけました。
んん？
« Maple and Co ltd »、、、、これって全然フランスっぽくないぞ？！
現代に生きてるって素晴らしいですね、私達にはインターネットがあります。
この悲しい発見を胸に、この聞いたことがない »Maple and Co ltd »をインターネットで探しめぐりました。
この会社はパリにも支店があることがわかりました。
ふぅ、少し気が楽になってきました。
It was particularly the case with this mahogany writing desk.
Already couple of month ago I was checking it and found this
label inside the middle drawer.
Oops !
« Maple and Co ltd » , that’s does not sound French at all !
Thanks God, we have now internet.
So very surprised by this « sad » discovery, I rushed to my
computer
to check about this company that I never heard about before.
Fine,
I found that they had a branch in Paris.
Ok I feel already better.
その後、引き出しの後ろ側に »Gauche » と « Droite »と書いてあるのを発見しました。
やった！これは間違いなくフランスで作られたことの証明です！
ちょうど、 »Maple and Co ltd »について調べていたのですが、この会社は1880年代に世界有数の家具メーカー
だったとのことです。そして、非常に高品質を売りにしている会社であることもわかりました。このライティングデスクはこ
の »Maple and Co ltd »のいいものだということがラベルからも証明することが出来ました。
After that, it was written « Gauche » and « Droite » at the
back of some drawers.
Ouf ! thats definitely French manufactured.
At that time I also found on internet that this company used
to be the biggest furniture manufacturer in the world in about
1880s. Well that I cannot confirmed but it was also written
that they were reputed for fine quality, that I can confirm
according to this writing desk.

やEメールなどは使いませんがもしかしたら知っているかもしれません。
彼がいうにはインターネットに書いてあることとほぼ同じことを行ってくれました、そして、この »Maple and
ltd »の家具はマホガニーの化粧板ではなくマホガニー材をしっかりとつかったものであることも教えてくれました。
これも、ライティングデスク自身をチェックしている時にきづいていました。

shop in Reims to ask him about it.
He has no internet and no email address but maybe he knows it.
He told me on the phone quite the same thing that I read on
internet and specified me that their furniture were in solid
mahogany, not with veneer.
That I also could see on this writing desk.
That’s quite some precious information we have here already
but let me check about their branch in Paris to try to get
more details about this specific piece I have.
残念にも、パリとロンドンでのビジネスは4月末で118年の幕を閉じた、ともウェブサイトに書いてありました。
正直に言えば、どんな会社であれ古くからある会社がなくなってしまうことは非常に悲しいです、それは長く続いた歴史がそこで終わって
しまう事を意味するからです。
Unfortunately, their website was saying that they close the
business in Paris and in London at the end of April 2014
after 118 years of activity in Paris.
Well to be honest, you like the company or you don’t , but
when a very old company close down, regardless of the field of
activity, it is always a sad thing cause it is a very long
history which disappear.
いまだに、インターネットを回れば彼らの昔からのカタログを見つけることが出来ます。
もし、私が今手にしているモデルが載っているカタログを見つけることができればご紹介できるのですが。
Still checking on internet, I saw that there were some of
their old catalogues available.
If I could find the model I have, I could approximately date
the piece.
おっと、間違えてほしくないのですが、どれだけ古いかは一番重要ではなく、どれだけ美しいかを私は重要視しています。
もちろん、あなたが家具の年代を特定できる情報を見つけることができれば喜ばしいことですし、もしそれがなかったとしても他にもヒン
トはあります。年代は大きなファクターであり重要ですが、メインのものでは無いことをわかって頂ければと思います。

So if you have some good clues helping
you determine the era
the piece was made it is fine,
if not you can judge by
yourself with few hints also, but in any case age should be a
major factor.
It is important
but it is not main point at all.
とにかく、今回私はラッキーだったのは引き出しの逆側の右底に作られた年月日までも書かれていたことです。
« Laothy
le 20-12-26″フランス式のかきかたで、これは1926年12月20日のことです。
そしてLaothyは家具職人の名前、もしくは受け取った顧客の名前になります。
おそらくこの家具はクリスマスギフト、もしくはニューイヤーギフト用に作られたのでしょう。

Anyway this time, I was very lucky, the date this piece was
made was written here, at the opposite side of the right
bottom drawer
« Laothy le 20-12-26″ which is according to the French way
for writing date: 20th December 1926.
And Laothy was either the cabinetmaker name or the customer
name.
I guess it was made to be a Christmas gift or new year gift.

ルイ１４世様式

few words about the Louis XIV style
ルイ１４世様式は1643年から1715年まで続きました。
３つの大きな時代に分けられます。1643年から1656年まではトランジション様式（変遷期）と呼ばれルイ１３世様式からルイ１４
世様式の期間を指します。
次に1656年から1700年までがピュアルイ１４世様式と呼ばれる期間になります。
３番目が1700年から1715年までになりますが、こちらはレガンス様式となります。
ピュアルイ14世様式期間の1656年から1700年までは非常に豪華で、印象をどれだけ与えられるかを考えられています。
アップライトや横材は隠されるようになる代わりに、化粧材がより多く使われるようになっています。
この時代で重要な人物はAndré Charles Boulleに間違いはありません。
彼は銅、コクタン、角、べっ甲、真珠貝、アイボリーなどを使用していました。
彼は初めてカーブしている銅を家具に使い始めました。
この様な威厳ある家具は主にパリで作られました。地方においてはガッチリとした木材を用い、カービングで装飾された家具が作られてい
ました。

The Louis XIV style goes from 1643 to 1715.
It is divided in 3 different periods. The first one goes from
1643 to 1656, and it is a transition style
between the Louis XIII style and the Louis XIV style.
The second period goes from 1656 to about 1700, that’s the
pure Louis XIV style period.
Then the third period from 1700 to 1715 which is already the
Régence style.
The pure Louis XIV style (1656-1700) is very luxurious,
priority is given to
impressiveness. The uprights and crosspieces are not visible
anymore. The veneer
process keeps developing.
The important man going with the style is indisputably Andre
Charles Boulle.
He is using copper, ebony, horn, tortoise’s scales, nacre and
ivory.
And his innovation was to use carved bronze in cabinetry.
This type of majestic furniture are mainly made in Paris. In
the country side, furniture
remain in
massive wood decorated with fine carving.

レジアンス様式はルイ１4世様式からルイ１5世様式の遷移期間の様式になります。
歴史的にみればルイ１4世が逝去された１７１５年からDuc d’Orleansが亡くなった１７２３年までとなるのですが、ルイ
１4世が亡くなる前の１７００年から１７２５年までがレジアンス様式と呼ばれます。
ルイ１4世様式に比べ気品さは抑えめになりました、しかし、幻想的、自由なデザインが使われるようになりました。
家具の前面部、横に曲線が使われています。

The Regence style is the transition style between the Louis
XIV style and the Louis XV style.
For historical reasons we date him from the death of Louis XIV
in 1715 to the death of the duc d’Orleans in 1723 but it
covers indeed the last part of the Louis XIV style from 1700
to 1725.
It conserves the majesty of the previous style but fantasy and
freedom in the design appears.
Curved lines appear on front and sides of the furniture.

本日お話するのは、私にとっての家具最後の様式についてです。
様式というのは全く新しいものができるのではなく、その前の次代の様式いくつかの要素を引き継ぐものになります。（例えば後脚部はセ
イバーの形をしているように）残っていきますし絶えることは無いでしょう。
ナポレオン三世様式のように前時代のものを“リミックス”したような様式もあります。
私はいわゆる“保守的”なのでアール・ヌーヴォーや、アール・デコについては語りません。これらはどうも好きになれません。
だからこそ、ルイ・フィリップ様式こそが究極のスタイルといえます。
I am talking now about what is for me the last style for
furniture.
The style was no that creative, following the previous one,
taking some element to other styles (for example the back foot
of chair in sabre’s shape) but still it remains distintive.
Of course some styles followed, like Napoleon III style ,
which is just a kind of « remix » of the previous styles.
I am also not talking about the Art nouveau or the Art déco,
as I am a « conservative » and
these are absolutely not my cup pf tea, so for me LouisPhilippe is the ultimate style.
ルイ・フィリップ様式は１８３０年から始まり１８４８年まで続きました。
線形として、一つ前の様式を継承していますが、繊細さはなくなり、重めの形になっています。
エレガントさよりも使いやすさへの挑戦が勝ったのです。
機械化工業が始まったことで手作業によるデコレーション、組木細工やカーブを描いた銅などはなくなり、装飾は限られたものになってい
ます。
The Louis-Philippe style started in 1830 to finish in 1848.
The lines follow the previous style but the delicacy is
missing and shapes are heavier.
The quest of comfort prevail over the elegancy.
This is the beginning of the mechanization so hand-crafted
decoration like marquetry or carved bronze disappear and
decoration motifs are also limited.

こちらは、ルイ１５世様式のチェリーウッドで作られた文机になります。 開き扉にある組木細工はダイアモンド型になってます。 前面
のベルト部にある引き出しは、両サイドが使え、真ん中は飾りになっています。 中はブナの木で作られ、緑の革が張ってあり、隠し扉も
ついています。 自家製のアンティークワックスで仕上げてます。

Empire様式

今日Empire様式について短い文書を書きました。
エンパイア様式（帝政様式）は１８００年頃に始まり１８３０年頃まで続きました。
この年代はナポレオンやルイ１8世そして彼の兄弟であるチャールズ１０世が含まれます。
家具のデザインはたくましく、少し重く、そして堂々とした印象に変わりました。
主に四角や立方体の形が使われています。
曲線をえがいた銅などがデコレーションに使われていることも特徴と言えます。
レストレーション時代（１８１５〜１８３０年）には、形がディレクトワール様式につか付きました。銅などの使用がなくなり、組木細工
がかわりに使われるようになりました。

The Empire Style started in about 1800 and finsihed in 1830.
So it includes the the Napoléon era and the reign of Louis
XVIII and his brother Charles X.
The furniture’s design became rigid, imposing and a bit heavy.
The dominant shapes are the cube and the square.
The decorative carved bronzes are also dominant.
During the Restoration era, from 1815 until 1830, the shapes
look like the Directoire’s shapes. The bronzes disappear and
are replaced by some marquetry.
