Constrained Layer Damping

Constrained Layer Damping Market - Global Industry Insights till 2025
Constrained Layer Damping (CLD) is a system used to suppress vibrations in various
machineries such as ship structures, vibrations caused due to propellers, mounted
machinery, etc. It is made of two sheets that are rigid, however, have poor damping
properties. A damping material such as viscoelastic is placed between the two sheets. When
the surface vibrates, it is trapped between the two sheets and degenerated in the
constrained layer as sheer energy. Vibration damping materials are widely used in
automotive applications to dampen the vibration and sounds of the engine, thus reducing
road noise.

The automotive industry constantly aims at reducing vehicle weight while striving to improve
the noise, vibration, and harshness performance. This increases the demand for improved
vehicle acoustic performance with lightweight acoustic materials, treatments, and
components. CLD comprises viscoelastic material layers with high stiffness, which help
dissipate vibratory energy in the structure through sheer deformation of the viscoelastic
layer. Thus CDC proves to be an efficient technique to subdue throbbing and sound in these
structures, due to which the demand for CDC is in turn increasing. This is a major factor
driving growth of the constrained layer damping market. Integration of lightweight acoustic
materials allows for enhanced vehicle efficiency, especially in heavy vehicles such as pickup
trucks and SUVs, while reducing the noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) impacts.
Increasing demand for lightweight automotive materials to lower fuel consumption, in turn, is
boosting demand for constrained layer damping. According to the U.S Department of
Energy, using lightweight materials in just one quarter of the U.S. vehicle fleet will result in
fuel savings of up to 5 billion gallons by 2030. Also, a 10% reduction in weight of the vehicle
can account for 6-8% fuel economy improvement.
The constrained layer damping market in North America was valued at US$ 302.83 Mn in
2016 and is expected to reach at US$ 552.46 Mn by 2025, exhibiting a CAGR of 6.9% over
the forecast period. The market in the regions is projected to hold 30.00% market share in
the global constrained layer damping market by 2025. The U.S. is home to the three major
companies namely, Ford Motor Company, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles U.S, and General
Motors. Increasing demand for premium cars in the North American region is increasing the
demand for constrained layer damping systems. For instance in 2016, BMW sold 313,174
models in the U.S alone. On the other hand Mercedes Benz sold 374,540 cars in the U.S.
Increasing demand for premium cars, in turn, is expected to boost growth of the constrained
layer damping market in the region. OEMs are focusing on incorporating CLD systems in
vehicles, to reducing the NVH effects, in turn providing consumers with a comfortable driving
experience. The presence of major automotive players in the U.S is expected to propel
extensive R&D activities with regards to damping treatments. This in turn is expected to
increase the growth opportunities for the CLD systems market.
The global constrained layer damping market was valued at US$ 1,074.08 Mn in 2016 and is
expected to register a CAGR of 6.2% over the forecast period. The global constrained layer
damping market is projected to reach to US$ 1,841.52 Mn by 2025.
The Asia Pacific constrained layer damping market was valued at US$ 218.06 Mn in 2016
and is expected to reach at US$ 407.16 Mn by 2025 growing at a CAGR of 7.2% over the
forecast period. The Asia Pacific region is the fastest growing market for the CLD systems
and is expected to retain its dominance during the forecast period. The increasing
construction activities in Asia Pacific is expected to see an increasing demand for CLD
systems. Damping treatments in construction activities helps to prevent the adverse effects
of natural disasters mainly earthquakes. According to Asian Development Bank, Asia Pacific
is estimated to invest around US$ 8-9 trillion in infrastructural development by 2018. Major
investments in building & construction industry is expected to result into rapid global
economic development and increasing population in both developed and emerging
economies, which in turn is projected to boost demand for CLD systems in the Asia Pacific
region.
