Status of Retirement / Replacement of more than 25 years old
Coal based Thermal Power Plants (as on 01.02.2017)
In July 2016, CEA in consultation with various Power Utilities identified about 9000 MW
capacity coal based thermal power plants in Govt. Sector which are more than 25 years
old for retirement / replacement by new super-critical units on the basis of un-economic
operation. Out of which, since Sept.'2015 to Jan.'2017, capacity of 3530 MW has been
retired and deleted from National Installed Capacity by CEA (details given at Table ‘A’).
Further, the status of the new super-critical thermal units (totaling 10180 MW capacity),
which have been proposed to be set up as replacement against the retired / proposed to
be retired old subcritical units (totaling 5228 MW capacity) is given at Table ‘B’.
