Distribution of Natural Resources
HASPI MS Medical Earth Science Lab 09a
MS-ESS3-1
Scenario
Materials important to modern technological
societies are not uniformly distributed across
the planet. Most elements exist in Earth’s
crust at concentrations too low to be
extracted. However, there are some
locations where geological processes have
concentrated them, making extraction more
economically feasible. Historically, humans
have populated regions that are climatically,
hydrologically, and geologically
advantageous for resource availability. The
availability of fresh water, agricultural food
production, commerce, and other aspects of
civilization have driven the development of
the human population.
Population of All Countries of the World

In this activity you will analyze the data from a set of interactive world maps to find
correlations, if any, between the distribution and use of various natural resources and
the distribution and overall wellbeing of the human population.
