Liberty High School is one of seven high schools in the county with a student population of approximately 1100 students, grades 9 through 12. All students must meet the HSA and/or PARCC requirement for graduation. Requirements vary based on the year the student began high school. Students are required to participate in assessments in Algebra and English. Students in the Class of 2017 must take and pass the Biology and Government HSA. The following credits are needed: English (4 credits); Social Studies (3 credits); Science (3 credits); Mathematics (4 credits); Physical Education (1 credit); Health (.5 credit); Fine Arts (1 credit); Technology (1 credit); World Language (2 credits of the same Language or American Sign Language) OR Advanced Technology (2 credits) OR a State Approved Career and Technology Completer Program; Financial Literacy (.5 credit), Elective Credits (5-12). Service Learning Carroll County students will meet or exceed the minimum number of Service Learning hours (75) as required by the State of Maryland. The following Liberty High School courses prepare students for taking Advanced Placement Exams: AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Studies, AP Human Geography, AP Macroeconomics, AP Language & Composition, AP Literature & Composition, AP Music Theory, AP Physics, AP Physics C, AP Statistics, AP Psychology, AP Studio Art, AP Studio Art-3D, AP Studio Art-2D, AP US History, AP World History, AP US Government & Politics. Grading/Class Rank Students in Carroll County Public Schools receive a weighted and non-weighted Grade Point Average (GPA/class rank determined by the final grade of each course). The dual GPA/class rank system is based on the assignment of quality points. The charts below identify the quality points assigned in both the weighted and non-weighted systems. When calculating GPA, LHS uses a 4.0 scale. Students may select either weighted or unweighted GPA to determine their class rank. Scholastic Awards The Class of 2016 had four National Merit Scholarship commended students, two Special Scholarship students and two National Hispanic Scholars. Student Activities Programs Liberty High School offers a broad program in interscholastic sports including Volleyball, Football, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Golf, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Cheerleading, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Wrestling, Indoor Track, Baseball, Softball, Boys Lacrosse, Girls Lacrosse, Tennis, and Outdoor Track. We also have a Corollary Sports Program for all seasons. Students in the Class of 2016 have earned individual state championships in Indoor Track and Outdoor Track and Field. County and Conference Championships were won in Girls Basketball, Girls Tennis, Boys Tennis, Boys Lacrosse, Golf, Boys soccer, and Softball. We won a Regional Championship in Boys Lax and won state championships in Boys Cross Country and Cheerleading. For the second year in a row, Liberty was awarded the Carroll Cup for the most successful county athletic program for the school year 2015-2016. We had a state finalist in wresting. Liberty High School students have the opportunity to participate in the following clubs and organizations: Academic Challenge, Archery, Art Club (National Art Honor Society); Book Discussion, Chess Club, Debate Club, Drama Club, Environmental Club, FCA, FFA, Friends for Life, French Club, German Club, History Club, International Thespian Society, LEO Club, LGBTQ Issues Club, Liberty Students Supporting Healthy Decisions, Library Advisory Board, Manga Club, Model Un Club, National Honor Society, National Ocean Science Bowl Team, Photography, RHO Kappa, Robotics, Ski and Snowboard Club, Spanish Club Strategy Club, Student Government Association, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Ultimate Frisbee Club, Varsity Club and Writer’s Club. Also available are various instrumental ensembles including Honors Wind Ensemble, Honors Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, Honors Orchestra, and Honors Jazz Ensemble as well as vocal ensembles, namely: Freshmen Women’s Chorus, Concert Choir, Chorale and Madrigals. We also have two small vocal ensembles - Barbershop Group, The Mane Men, and the Sweet Adeline’s Purrfect Harmony. The Lions’ Pride Marching Band has been the Chapter 5 Greater Maryland Champion 21 times, receiving awards for best music, marching, percussion, auxiliary and drum major, and most recently the marching band placed 7th at the 2015 Atlantic Championships. The Wind Ensemble and Orchestra continue to receive straight Superior ratings at the Carroll District Festival while the Jazz Ensemble earned straight Superior ratings at the 2012 New Orleans Choice Music Jazz Competition. The Symphonic Band and Orchestra performed at the 2015 Disney Magic Music Days in Epcot Center along with the Concert Choir and Madrigals. Concert Choir and Madrigals continue to receive Excellent and Superior ratings at the Carroll County Choral Assessment Festival. Liberty holds the highest population of music students in All-County Band, Orchestra, Chorus, and All-State ensembles each year. Liberty Drama is an internationally recognized theatre program that again received several Cappies Awards Nominations, and won nine awards in a variety of categories of critic, performance, and technical theatre including the award for Best Musical. In addition, Liberty’s International Thespian Society Troupe 984 attended the Maryland Thespian Festival and brought home several awards and scholarships including Best One Act. The group also traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska for the 4 th year to represent the State of Maryland in the One Act Showcase as well as to attend master classes and college auditions at the International Thespian Festival this past June.
